Clean rooms , awesome sights, friendly staff , coffee n more like we all will be back

When I was looking for a motel near Death Valley I wanted one not too far from DV, but closer to Nv as I was heading to Las Vegas afterwards. I second guessed myself in Booking this motel as the hotel seemed old, but the reviews were what made me book it. The motel was worth it! I showed up late (around 9 pm) so no one was at the office for check-in. BUT they check you in remotely! This threw me off as this was the first time I was checked-in this way. It looks like a Ring camera and you do press the ring button. Someone speaks to you over the camera and obtains your info. Then you are told your room number. You don't have to sign anything or give your card (worked out well for me as I made my reservation through Booking.com). Once in our room I was shocked at how spacious it was! It may look old, but it had everything you need and then some. They provided towels specifically to remove any Death Valley dirt or any makeup. The microwave and fridge were in working order (I say this as sometimes with motels they are not) and they even put a hand sanitizer bottle in the room. We didn't stay around to check out the little town, but it definitely was a wild Wild West type of feel to it. Definitely recommend this motel for the comfort, space and location. BTW there is a great BBQ place down the street. read more

El Portal Motel has a great location if you visit Death Valley National Park, the motel is in Nevada, but very close to the park! I chose it due to the location, also all the hotels in California are closed for now! Also, once you enter Beatty, the motel is very close by, the first you'll see on the left side. It's located on Main St., you can walk to restaurants and some stores. Very convenient! We were celebrating our anniversary and stayed here for 3 nights in December. The motel is old school in the good way, classic, we got a room on a side, just parked right in front with a table and chairs outside, welcoming! We liked the room, with 2 Queen beds, very big and clean, plenty of space to put your things, many tables, chairs, a mini fridge (with small freezer!), microwave, coffee maker, hair dryer, everything you need for a longer stay! We surely used everything and made our breakfast in and got some take out as well! We had no maid service due to safety regulations because of Covid, but it was no big deal (and it makes sense) since the room was clean and they left plenty of extra towels and toiletries. If you need something, all you had to do was call front desk. We got extra coffee for example. The owner is very nice and accommodating. Had loud neighbors one night, they showed up after midnight, they fought the whole time, slammed doors, drove away, came back a few times till they left at 6 am. At least we got some sleep before and after. No one's fault, we chatted with the owner about it. It can happen, too bad since the place is quiet otherwise. No issues with pillows, mattress, the shower was decent, the heater worked well, but didn't need to use it much. Wifi worked well also. Reasonable priced! Cute Christmas decor! Indie motel, locally owned! Comfortable stay! No burro-s in sight though, sigh! read more

This is a homey little motel. It feels like a late 70s style studio, very clean. The people inside are super friendly. In the morning we woke up to burros outside, the man came out and fed them. He even let me steal a grape to feed one. They let you pet them it's great. A fun convenient little hotel off the Highway super close to Death Valley and Rhyolite ghost town. It is extremely quiet here, day and especially night. We would definitely stay again. read more

I stayed at El Portal Motel for one evening on my way to Death Valley National Park. The location is ideal because it's virtually right outside the park. I had been traveling north from Joshua Tree on one of my National Park excursion trips and didn't get into Beatty till late. The owner was nice enough to leave a key for my room in the lobby which he left unlocked for me. In general, Beatty is a small, quaint town and that sort of summed up my stay at the El Portal. The motel/complex has a throwback and homely feel to it with vintage style rooms. I appreciate places like these. My room was very well priced. It was also clean and I had a good nights rest. This place was a nice way to start out my adventure into Death Valley. Btw.....buy gas here in the town of Beatty. Inside Death Valley NP, there were 2-3 gas stations I remember passing, but the prices were outrageous. read more

For a very reasonable & budget friendly priced motel. It was clean and had all the accommodations we needed during our 3 day stay. It's also at the gateway to Death Valley National Park, which was very convenient. read more

Really nice guy at reception. I expect he owns the place. We joked a bit. Even though I had a little dog with me, he slipped me into an available room that had been pet free and cleaned it thoroughly after our stay. Room was a great value. Neat, clean, comfortable, quiet. I'll stay there again as I travel through the area. read more

Spent one night here after a long drive from San Francisco on our way to Death Valley. Made a reservation beforehand via their web site - our $49 room was huge with two comfortable queen beds, mini-fridge, microwave, and cable TV. Free wi-fi is also available. The room was pretty tired looking but funky and with character at the same time. Since this hotel is a block off the highway it was really quiet at night. There is a great bar and a few dining options just a short walk up the street. **Note - when driving in Beatty be sure to obey the speed limit and traffic laws. We saw two sheriff's vehicles (pick up trucks) pulling people over when we rolled into town. read more

Nice, clean and quiet. The beds are comfy, we didn't get shorted on bath linens and the fridges have an actual, separate freezer! Very important for refreezing our cooler packs. I stayed at the El Portal before embarking on a day trip to Death Valley National Park. The El Portal is a little rough around the edges and pretty dated, but clean. The room was free of dust and the microwave was spotless. The bed pillows were a little flat. The bedspread was old and faded, but appeared clean. The staff was friendly. The downsides to my stay were that I had trouble accessing the free WiFi and the room seemed to have a musty, "old" smell to it. Also, there was no phone in the room, so I had to return to the office for assistance. Would I stay at the El Portal again? Meh. Was it among the worst experiences of my life? We were passing through on our way to Vegas, and after seeing the room options in Beatty, We were pretty nervous. All of the motels in Beatty appear to be dives, but we were really surprised by this motel. It is definitely a throwback to the "motor lodge" era, but it is done very nicely. The rooms are super clean, and the staff is amazingly welcoming. She gave us a great overview of the town and nearby attractions, and saved us a ton of wasted time by pointing out unknown-to-us road closures. The know a lot of local info about Death Valley and the surrounding areas. I will say the beds are very firm, but that is not a downside to people who enjoy a firm bed. My wife thought they were very comfortable. It seems to be a little family ran operation, and I was glad we chose this one. This will definitely be our go-to place next time we are passing through. read more

Classic roadside motel on the outside; clean, updated room complete w fridge, microwave, coffee maker and hair dryer on the inside. The check-in was friendly and quick. A BNB style info binder in the room was a bonus touch, w/ maps and the menus of the various local restaurants. A very cool retro-style motor lodge. Very friendly gal at check-in. I booked 2 rooms at the same time but they were in different buildings, just a minor inconvenience. Great microwave and fridge with freezer. Room was clean and the TV worked well, as did the free Wi-Fi. You have to look in the info book in the room for network names and passwords. Why only 3 stars? The walls seemed paper thin as we could hear and at times understand conversations going on in the rooms on either side of us. Not used to that in more modern motels, and perhaps that is part of the charm? Still, I can recommend this place as a great jumping off point for Death Valley NP. For the area, I give it 4 out of 5 stars. The check-in guy was nice. Room was a bit outdated, but spacious and clean with working a/c, fridge, and powerful water pressure in the shower. It was walking distance to food. The only drawback was that there was an odor to the room (maybe cigarette smoke from a long time ago and cleaning products used over the years to clean it up?-not sure). I would stay here again if in the area. read more

We love this place!!! Just leaving from our second stay in two years. If you truly want see Death Valley and want to spend ALL YOUR TIME hiking and exploring and "NOT" ALL YOUR MONEY on a place to lay your head at night then this is the place for you and your family. It has so many features we appreciate.... Clean good size rooms, LOTS of counter space, shower has many sections for each travelers toiletries, a micro wave, a dorm size refrigerator (especially love that freezer holds gallon water jug for big cooler as well as 5-16oz. bottles for day cooler), table for eating/playing games, parking right in front of room for easy in and out and best are the wonderfully kind people who own and operate! This hotel is located in a very quiet section and it's right near the BEATY cut off to the park. There is a bypass to Furnace Creek area and another to Stovepipe Wells area. The drive in and out was easy and VERY BEAUTIFUL!Rhiolyte Ghost Town is also just minutes away. Enjoy fellow travers read more

Old Schol hotel, old school charm. Hands down the BEST shower EVER! Talk about water pressure.

This is a little hidden jewel of a motel. Off the main highway and out of the town of Beatty, NV. When we drove up we we were a little worried as there are a few old rooms next to the office, however we were given room #20 which is spacious, clean and absolutely quiet. It looks like there are about 20 rooms that are updated. The owner Brook, spent several minutes telling us what to see in Death Valley, and where we should eat in town, even shared pictures of the wild flowers to look for. read more

Third generation family owned motel. Rooms are good enough for an overnight stay, pricing is very fair. Can't get much more helpful then the owners were to us, gave us a full run down of where to go in the park, best places to eat locally and even reminded us to gas up before heading into Death Valley. They mentioned that they are redoing a bunch of the rooms over the winter. I'd happily stay there again next time I'm in town. I did not expect the Ritz Carlton, they easily met my expectations for the price. read more
