What a great place to stop if you're leaving or entering Death Valley National Park. A small place with a simple food menu, a good selection of drinks, and a crowd that is decidedly local. The service was quick and friendly, and they have a nice outdoor seating area. Casual vibe, good prices, big chili portions! I enjoyed my chili, there was meat and beans and just enough spice to leave a pleasant taste that kept me going back for more. $8.50 cash for a big portion, card incurs a slight additional charge. Welcoming to both locals and travelers alike, the chili here was quite excellent and exactly what we needed as we were traveling along the highway. I was very happy that such an establishment was still serving food late in addition to the drinks. Holy moly, this place screams vintage History! This is a really cool joint in the town of Beatty. You can see the history within this building. Their menu is simple and they say it right in the name Chili and beer, that's really about it (They have other liquor too). The bartender is there is also the one responsible for preparing your food plate. Seems to be a very popular Staple in the community. Prices are pretty reasonable for a small town oldie but goodie establishment. If you pay with a credit or debit card, let me tell ya...they charge an additional 3.9%. Bartender tells me it gets very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter in the building. When I went the temperature was perfect. There's not too many details except for it's worth a stop to see such a vintage Watering Hole. it's cozy it's quaint and they played Western TV shows. If you are ever in the Beatty area, this place is a must! I happened in here after a day of Death Valley trekking. Super cozy, the place was packed to the gills already with regulars, but fortunately had some outside seating. Great Old-west decor, with a wall full of plaques from all the awards the chili has won over the years. I had to order up the chili dog with onions, and it was great! The chili was hot and tasty, the dog had that nice snap to the skin and was just the thing after a long day. The lady running the place (never got her name--my bad) was super friendly, as was the other people in the bar. Someone there had a cute doggie inside, so I got some bonus pets in. It was pretty cold outside being the end of December and all, but there was an awesome old school wood stove outside being tended by the part-time bouncer Randy. We sat down with this dude for a while and had a great old time! He regaled us with stories from his time as a Beatty native, and before we knew it the bar was closing time! Burro Bar is a hole in the wall, very small. You come inside and see everything and everyone at once. During COVID-19, just 4 people are allowed in to hang out. The cigarette smoke hits you instantly because it's allowed in Nevada to smoke inside. It is hard to breathe and you feel like you'll leave taking the smell in your clothes and hair. The locals were a tad strange. The bartender girl was trying to help everyone. The menu is very limited, we skipped the food since chili dog and chili burger didn't seem like a good option while we were travelling. Everything is cheap, they do have beers on tap and an outdoor area, nicely decorated for Christmas. I recommend this place more for a beer break while in Beatty than a food/dinner destination. It has character and it's one of those place to check out for fun. Because it's unique. Don't expect anything amazing, just your older local bar. read more

Small town life needs a bar serving chili right? Fun, TINY little place but we had friendly service and it was open and serving hot food. Chili in Iowa has beans. Most places serve chili without beans. This place has beans! We chatted with the lady and I expressed my support of chili with beans. We got to talking and found out her son competed in a chili competition in our town and has a scholarship to the culinary school here. That's pretty crazy! Wonderful place, with one caveat. I've been to Death Valley 4 times now and have always wanted to stop in here. On my most recent trip I took the time and I am glad I did. The place is tiny, the interior seats maybe a dozen people? Additional seating outside and when I sat out there someone made a fire in the fireplace drum next to me so I could stay warm. The little lady working the bar/kitchen/serving/cleaning/doing everything all by herself was delightful. Very friendly, welcoming, even comped a beer for me because... I'm not really sure why? I asked her to make whatever was the best thing there and she made me chili dogs. Delicious. The atmosphere felt like it was a set from a western. Tons of old West decor, a cowboy movie on the tv, but it still felt authentic. The place was filled with regulars as well as a few travelers. This is where the caveat comes in. The regulars were all very drunk and I have a feeling they spend every day drinking there all day. They were very friendly toward me but were sloppy drunk and not as nice to a pair of women from France. The ladies were clearly uncomfortable by the loud attention they were getting and I don't blame them. I wished them "bienvenue" and they appreciated having someone bear witness to the drunk locals' behavior. Oh, and the asshole mentioned in a previous review was there too, like I said, I think these guys spend every day there getting hammered. But don't let that stop you from stopping in for some excellent chili and beers, supporting a wonderful small business and enjoying an experience you want forget. Happy Burro is one of the few restaurants open in Beatty, at the moment. Stopped in for dinner after hearing good things about their award-winning chili. The restaurant is definitely more of a dive, with outdoor wooden table seating and a small indoor area for the bar and 2 tables. Beware. You can smoke indoors here. Not my thing. Sat outside and got the famous chili. Not sure if they were having an off night...but the chili was...not what I had in mind. Very very salty, had one flavor profile of just RICH, couldn't taste bean from meat. I honestly couldn't even finish it. The server says they make a batch daily in the mornings, so maybe I just came on a bad day. I will not return, but its 1 of 4 restaurants currently available for dinner within a 60 mile radius. read more

We were delighted to find them open on the 4th of July on a long drive from CA to UT - we ordered off the five item menu - bowl of chili, hotdog, chili dog, and frito boat- we went with the last one, some great meaty chili served over Fritos corn chips, with cheese and onions. Yum! Happy Burro is the best restaurant in Beatty. It's nothing to get excited over. There's a lack of competition so it's a title easy to win. Most people here seem to be locals. You see a few tourists. It seems like somewhere from the Wild West with all the guns. It has them freaking everywhere. You should avoid this if that makes you jittery. A good thing is that most of these are antiques. You won't get shot with these but I imagine many of the customers carry so don't pop off to any of them. I was coming back from visiting someone and made a stop to go visit the ghost town, which is why most tourists come here. The place was surprisingly busy with most people on the porch. It has some colorful characters. One gentleman was discussing with another if he was a local here and he said he came to live here after getting out of jail and the judge telling him to get far away from there. Alarming, but still an interesting story. The bartender Kitty seemed cool and out of place for there. Cocktails are good and cheap. Whiskey and cola is only about $2 or so, and they give you a strong pour. Food menu is pretty small but they have some good items. Surprisingly they have a vegetable burger. This is about $6 and it's okay. It was much better than I expected. Since it's Beatty it's reasonable that you expect something exceptionally terrible. You can have a good time, just be careful around the folks in town. read more

After a day of hiking in Death Valley, my friend and I walked in and were told it would be a 45 min wait for food and that they might run out. The place was PACKED and there were some pretty unhappy and impatient customers. We grabbed a seat at the bar and got waters. We ordered the frito chili bowl and were expecting it to take awhile. The bartender checked on us very frequently and was handling the dinner rush with extreme patience. Our food came out in under 20 min and it was delicious. Felt like I was back at home eating my moms chili when I was younger. In addition it is a great deal ( under $15 for two waters and two chili bowls)! Our travel partners in a different vehicle had a holdover here in town while they got a new tire (it's a long story of shortcuts that weren't, off-roading in a decidedly on-road vehicle, and a haphazardly discarded bike frame in the middle of nowhere that found their undercarriage... but that's not what this is about)... so with a little time to kill, we wandered into the Happy Burro. The place looks about what you would expect it to look like: polished wood on wood on wood around the bar, stools that look like they have seen their share of butts and maybe a few trips through the air across the place on particularly salty nights, and lots of crazy decorations on the walls. Quaint, lived-in... if these walls could talk, sort of thing. Ordered up a chili and a beer-- the chili was fine: good consistency, just enough salt, spice, and cumin, but I could have eaten ten bowls (they were kinda small and I was kinda hungry.) Not wanting to drop $35 on chili, I settled instead for a draught beer, which was dropped on the bar in front of me quickly by the kind lady working the controls. Served in a frosty mason jar, it went down easy, especially with the chili. Probably could have made an afternoon of it here, but the tire was probably ready, and this place already felt a little bit too much like a Charlie Daniels song to press my luck. Worth stopping in if you've got nothing better to do. Worth being a daily driver if you're a local and realized there might not be much of anything better to do that eat chili and drink beer in a cool bar with plenty of stories to tell if you're willing to listen. read more

Just passing through Beatty and we had a blast here. Tiny inside dining room, but expansive outside deck, which is where most gather when they're open. Limited menu, and of course we tried the chili. It was outstanding, especially over one of their hamburgers. It's made with a dark red sauce of some kind which makes it really unique and tasty. I think I told my wife several times after that it was the best chili I've had in some time, maybe ever. So get yourself something with chili on it, or just the chili itself along with a cold draft beer. There might even be one of the locals there who'll tell you his life story and invite you to come back for their annual party on Nevada Day! read more

The Happy Burro is a phonebooth of a bar, populated by I swear, none other than the flesh and blood stars of the Sunday funnies. Hagar the Horrible, he'll be there. Cathy, yep. The BC fellas, check. The Born Loser, um-hum. Seriously, every single one!! If that doesn't pique your curiousity, how about this- the beer is cheap, ice cold, and delivered by the happiest bartender you'll ever meet. And if you need more elbow room than the inside allows, there's ample shaded outside seating. I have not tried the chili, though I would had it not been such a scorcher of a day. Something about chili in the heat just doesn't appeal to my senses. Anyways, next time you find yourself in Beatty, thirsty for an ice cold beer, mosey on down to the Happy Burro. The Chili proper is pretty good, tasty and has a mild kick to it but they obviously dump improperly prepared beans into the good Chili and this was awful . Dry, uncooked beans are not good . Visited Happy Burro this past week after a long day in Death Valley and I was so happy I did! The owner? Or woman working was so friendly and sweet to me, and let me know what they had available. I went with just a classic cup of chili to go and got crackers, onions and cheese (huge cup!). Can't beat their prices and the flavor was great - big chunks of meat and I think some smoke and cinnamon flavors in their chili! Definitely a must try if you're in the area. I want to start by saying that the staff was super friendly and helpful. We came here on our trip to Death Valley and decided to eat here. We tried the hot dog, hamburgers, and the chili.
