A friend and I had lunch there today. However, I became suddenly ill and threw up. My friend got up and got me extra napkins from the server's table. My extended family and I (party of six adults and a toddler) met here for a noontime Saturday lunch. Service was friendly and efficient. For an appetizer, we ended up ordering a second large serving of cheese dip, just because everybody thought it was so tasty. (The first bowl didn't last very long.) All of our meals were properly prepared, and tasty. Zero complaints, with the exception of a small chicken bone found in a chicken burrito. Good to know that the ingredients were so fresh. The last time that I remember eating here was at least a decade ago. This is still a pretty solid Tex Mex eatery. Parking was ample for our vehicles, as the restaurant wasn't that busy. I wanted Mexican food n was in the area. Years ago, this strip had some delicious eateries, not just the high end. Anywho, the food wasn't what I expected. The guacamole didn't have any onion, lime juice, or salt. Just mashed avocado. I dont know what was mixed in this cheese dip, but queso it was not. I couldn't tell you what was in my bowl. I got an upsot, sot stomach in the restaurant. It could have been the drink, doubt it. I didnt finish it either. My first experience here was AWFUL. My service was absolutely terrible. The server did not give me a warm welcome and rushed me the entire time. His name is Martin M. and I highly recommend never getting his service. My bill was only $10 making my UNREQUIRED tip $1 which I did not give due to poor service. My queso was cold and the fries I ordered were presented poorly with ketchup packets sprinkled all in the food. After I signed my bill, he DEMANDED that I tip and that if I didn't, he would charge my card anyway for the extra money. After threatening to take money from my card, I asked for the manager. He stormed away stating that I cannot come back because I didn't give him $1. Pitiful. read more

Hands down my favorite Mexican restaurants. Whether it's a good margarita or in my case enchiladas and a chicken taco you won't miss! When I first started coming to this establishment I would order the enchilada supreme and a side of rice now this is my go to! I get everything I want and quickly. They seat you fairly quickly if there's anyone standing at the host stand They've been known to take a minute to acknowledge new guests arriving. When I don't see a host I seat myself in the bar area much easier for those of us who are impatient or HANGRY lol! Once seated the chips and salsa come out immediately. As an adult I hate it! If I want to go see characters playing then I'll go to Chuck E. Cheese however, I gave that up a long time ago since my kids are grown. I always have a great experience when I order take out from el porton--it is timely and correct! They give such a huge portion of queso and lots of salsa, and in my opinion you can nevvva have too much of either (ALSO you don't have to pay for the to go salsa like some restaurants). No refills were given for most of the table, even when he had a pitcher in hand. It took forever to be served and for the check, even though it wasn't busy. No refill of chips or napkins was given. The food was lukewarm, as if it had been setting around a moment. When the the bill arrived, and the tip was a well deserved $0. He complained rudely, and told a member of the table that if they want good service in the future, they need to tip. I will not be going back, nor will my friends. Once again, El Porton did not did disappoint. Let me say, I went for lunch and ordered the chicken taco salad. The taco bowl was very crispy. The lettuce crisp and very fresh. Lots of chicken. I wish they had added re-fried beans, but that is just a personal preference. I also ordered a jumbo frozen margarita. The margarita was HUGE and very good. I could taste the tequila. Several years ago I considered El Porton my default favorite Mexican restaurant in town. Then somewhere along the way they expanded their menu (which included PASTA offerings...?) and instead of specializing in a few dishes and perfecting them, they offer way too many mediocre-at-best options. Nothing tasted authentic and the dishes that formerly were full of flavor just fell flat... all while their prices have gone way up. This chain is a hard pass for me. read more

Stopped in for a late lunch. It was well after the noon hour and we were only one of about 3 tables. The salsa had almost no flavor at all. When the entrees arrived the shredded chicken California burrito contained no chicken whatsoever. We figured it may be just in the middle but after eating 1/2 we still were unable to find any chicken. Brought it to the attention of the waiter after getting up to locate him. He said that it was the kitchens fault and asked if we wanted another one. We really did not have time to wait so we just dealt with it. I figured we may get a discount but it was never discussed any further and he just brought the bill. The other entree was really not that great either. It did have several large dry chunks of "shredded" chicken. Just writing this one off as a bad experience and will not return. Always drove by this place and wondered what a restaurant was doing in a plaza filled with medical offices. We finally decided to check it out and we loved it. Our waitress gave us excellent customer service and was super friendly. My 8 year old enjoyed her chicken soft taco and especially loved the robot that served our food. This is a great place for families since it was a very laid back atmosphere. I ordered a beef chimichanga and I ate the whole thing. Try the el Porton dip, it has beans, cheese sauce, ground beef and pairs really well to tone down the kick of the complimentary salsa. I appreciated the meals prices as well. Very affordable considering how restaurants have had to raise their prices since Covid. This is going to be our New Mexican restaurant for family dinner in germantown. read more

It was good a couple months ago, but tonight the food was cold, gave us the wrong food, and what looked like the manager looked like she didn't care and was too focused on the food robot. They charges us extra for things that came with the combo like rice and beans. We only came here because it was the only place within about a mile of GPAC where we thought we could grab a quick snack before the show. If I'm wrong about that, please let me know - because we'd love to go somewhere else. I haven't been to an El Porton in over 10 years, probably because better Mexican places have popped up all around Memphis. But this place was close to GPAC and we (correctly) assumed it wouldn't be too busy. Note to self: not busy = not the best criteria for choosing a restaurant. The bartender was very nice, although she did seem surprised to see us walk in and sit at the bar. There were about four servers standing around in the bar area watching TV, but they dispersed pretty soon after we plopped ourselves down. This place was on its way to a 3-star review - just your standard Mexican place with giant mugs for frosty beverages, when I saw the wall behind the margarita machine, which was filthy - covered with what looked like backsplash from filling the machine. But this wasn't "fresh" backsplash - it was brown and dried onto the wall, which made me think it had been there for a while. Now, you might argue that the cleanliness of the wall doesn't impact the cleanliness of the food, but my argument is that if the areas you CAN see aren't clean, then probably the areas you CAN'T see (like the food prep areas) are even less clean. My husband and I used to like coming here for good, consistent Mexican food and service. The last two times we've been were awful and we will never go back. The whole place has a distinct bathroom smell (should have left immediately) that has been unsuccessfully covered up with bleach. The food was edible but it took forever to get our meals and everything came out separately. Husband's tacos came out a good 7 minutes before anything else. The fajitas came out next and were room temperature, no shells. Had to ask for the shells and the waitress looked at us like we were insane. And she was the worst part of the experience. She had zero sense of urgency, walked around slower than I've ever seen a person walk, never apologized for anything. We had to ask multiple times for a refill on chips. El Porton has the best cheese dip in Memphis, hands-down. It is a local chain, so quality is par for the course. The cheese they use makes up for a lot of meat mistakes, like overcooked chicken, or sour ground beef. The bar is good, with an ample selection of domestic and Mexican beers (try Bohemia, you'll never go back to Corona or Dos EquisXX), and isn't that what we all really want when we eat Mexican? Booze and cheese dip? On the lighter side, try a tacoless taco salad, or the Sopa de Pollo (chicken soup). With fresh pico de gallo and avocado within, it is the best chicken soup for the common cold. read more

Saturday night "crowd" was non-existent. Didn't see what appeared to be "regulars." I was disappointed in the watery Texas Margaritas. Their mix used to be spot-on. I don't like thick hard chips, since I've eaten @ places that offer the ultra-light ones. Came in during a semi busy period before the holidays with a large group. Was given 2 orders of chips and waited for over 45 minutes for just drinks, forget about ordering food. Talked to the manager and she basically told me she could not help me. We left shortly afterwards after almost an hour wait alone for just drinks. Horrible service. Horrible excuses. So we used to eat here pretty regularly and I have reviewed it before. I gave them a 1 star and my only comment was, "The food is usually pretty good but oh my god you better have 2 hours allocated to eat because the service is slow and disorganized." I am going to upgrade them from a 1 star to 2 stars simply because the food is okay, not great but okay...but again what should be a quick 45-minute lunch (maximum) took us almost 90 minutes from the time we walked in to when we left. So they shaved off 30 minutes from their former 2 hour time frame, ergo the 1 star to 2 star review. We visited this restaurant on a Saturday morning and it was empty which should have been our first indication. They served jarred salsa which we can buy anywhere and the food was served cold. We sent it back and got it back with half the size. They served nachos for $6.50 on a dinner plate that was half filled. Never again! It's been while since we have visited El Porton, since the previous times the service lacked. We tried them recently and we were pleasantly surprised. We were greeted and quickly seated. Our server was very nice and personable. She listened and our order was 100% correct! We also had a to-go order she took it and brought it toward the end of our meal. I ordered the crunchy beef tacos, rice and beans. It was all average for an American Mexican restaurant, but it has always been my suburban go-to Mexican restaurant. The wait staff is always nice and this location is actually pretty cool because there is an upstairs section. The tacos alone wouldn't be a bad choice if you are considering calories, but only order one if you want a side such as rice or beans. This location isn't as good as the others. They're all so standard, I'm not sure why this one tends to suck. The Mexican food is classic, as at all El Portons. But at this location, I've gotten a really obnoxious server before. She was older, Hispanic, and aggressively rude. I also have a consistent problem with the enchiladas not being cooked long enough and the enchilada and burrito never have enough sauce. Then if you ask for extra sauce, they still come out the same. I like the Germantown road location better. And the one behind the mall next to the Olive Garden on highway 64. read more
