    Tacos al carbon
    Bonnie R.

We're new to the community, discovering, comparing and contrasting the area restaurants... I've been to another Mexican restaurant in the area multiple times but didn't realize this gem was tucked away at the corner at Wolf River Blvd and Houston Levee. On a Sunday around noon, I didn't have to wait for a table. Service by Tito has been impeccable. Prices are fair. Food is good-but not great (hence the one star deduction). The restaurant is very clean and well maintained. There are a lot of TVs around the restaurant playing sports--although interestingly they're closing early for the "big game" this afternoon. The tacos al carbon were good but a little chewy for my taste. As a bonus, they serve coke products (yes!)! I'm happy. You will be too. Pro tip: lunch specials are valid on Saturdays, too.

Stick to the items pictured, I'd suggest getting it to go.

I wish I had kept a copy of the receipt so I could call out the crap server we had. He was terrible! We received our drinks and cheese dip before we got chips and salsa, or even silverware. When we mentioned it, he abruptly said "it's coming ok" and walked off. He didn't pay attention to what was being said to him and got my wife's food wrong. He breezed by after the food came and halfheartedly check on us, but then again, he didn't listen. She looked at me in disbelief as he walked off during mid sentence. He then was absent for 10 minutes so she just ate it without half of what she wanted. Food was meh. Chips and Salsa are blah. Rice was over cooked to the point of not even being whole grains anymore. Fajita steak was dry and flavorless. No one finished their meals and we just tried to get out of there as fast as possible. My beef burrito was pretty good but that's it as positivity goes. Icing on the cake was being overcharged by the girl at the front register. I saw an old friend and was outside talking to him when "C" paid. She came outside and said "on top of sucking it was ridiculously expensive". $47 and some change is what we were charged. We usually all get the same thing at all Mexi Places. I knew there was no way it was that much and went in to challenge the bill as she didn't have the itemized copy. Register lady grabs the ticket and says " oh I read it wrong, that's a 2 and not a 7". She rang it out for a full $5 more than what it really was. Now, I don't know how she could make that mistake but I am sure I'm never going to find out if it's better a second time. I loved the El Mezcal on Perkins when I was a youngster. I have found that I don't like any of the ones I've been to in the past decade plus though. Maybe I need to circle back to my roots and get away from all of the damn white people. Ugh.

Had a decent dinner. We went in on a Friday evening for dinner. We were immediately seated and someone came right over to take our drink order and to bring chips and salsa. We ordered fajitas and a chicken and shrimp dinner. It was all your typical Mexican fare. Nothing special but it wasn't bad either. El Mezcal is good for a quick dinner out. They aren't expensive and there generally is not a wait.

They just flop the food on the plate and my quesadilla was soggy. They put the utensils on the other side of the table. The only good thing was that my drink was cold.

This is close to our house, so we frequent it. This is not the absolute best Mexican food in Collierville, but it is good.

My feet were sticking to the floor, the toilets were disgusting, there was dust so thick on the partitions it was as if they had never been wiped down. The whole place had a grimy feel/smell to me. The food? No. My hubs got cheese enchiladas, the server suggested he add protein ok-chicken-these had to be the worse enchiladas we have ever tasted. The chicken had a funny taste. I got the Fresco bowl I think its called, no protein. Bland, the little bit of guacamole they had ion there? No taste. The flight of salsa was so so. Hubs wanted to try a margarita. That was the best thing about the whole experience. $70 later for two people the only thing we have to show for it was my hubs waking up from sleep later on sick-three times. He ate nothing else after our lunch besides fruit so you do the math. So yes, our first time will be our last. My daughter has been here with friends and said the only thing she enjoyed was her drink so this may just be a good place for drinks.

They brought out complimentary chips and salsa--definitely a highlight. The chips were seasoned (not your typical plain chips), and paired really well with the salsa. Super flavorful! For drinks, I ordered the Tornado Jumbo, and my husband got a Tornado with Hennessy added. Both were really good. I especially liked that each layer had a distinct flavor--some places make colorful drinks that all taste the same, but that wasn't the case here. We ordered a single order of steak, chicken, and shrimp fajitas. While the flavor was good, it did feel a bit heavy on the vegetables and a little light on the meat. When the dish first came out, it included bacon, which we weren't expecting and don't eat. However, the staff handled it well--they apologized and quickly remade it without any issue. Great customer service there. Even with the single order, we were able to make about five tacos, which was nice. My daughter ordered the kids' cheese pizza with a side option (fries or rice and beans). The pizza was similar to a frozen-style pizza, and she didn't care for it, but she did enjoy the chips, rice, and beans. Overall, I've been wanting to try this place since we're in the area often, and I'm glad we did. The menu is extensive, and there are plenty of options to come back and try. Our waitress was also very nice and attentive throughout our visit. I would definitely return!

The restaurant was not overly busy, which made the entire experience relaxed and enjoyable from the moment we walked in. The first thing that stood out was the service. Everyone there was welcoming, patient, and genuinely friendly. Since it was our first time trying a few things on the menu, we had several questions, and the staff took the time to explain everything without making us feel rushed. They gave recommendations, explained the toppings and flavors, and helped make ordering easy. I decided to try the specialty hot dogs, and honestly, they were amazing. They were packed with flavor and loaded with fresh toppings that worked perfectly together. The combination of creamy avocado, fresh vegetables, sauces, and perfectly cooked meat created a unique flavor that was both fresh and filling. Every bite had something different going on, and you could tell the ingredients were high quality and made with care. The presentation alone looked incredible, but the taste backed it up completely. The atmosphere was comfortable and casual, making it a great place to sit down and enjoy good food with family or friends. Nothing felt rushed, and the overall vibe made the experience even better. If you are looking for something different from the usual restaurant options and want flavorful food with friendly service, Las Tortugas is definitely worth visiting. The stars aligned on this most recent visit and so I got to try them. This location in Germantown is a little easy to miss signage-wise, but Google Maps got me here easily. The parking lot is small but paved nicely and easy to navigate. The inside of the restaurant does feel like a deli, with a counter to order at and a small but reasonable amount of seating. The restaurant's accolades are plastered on walls and the glass windows around the food prep area and it's fun to read the history and writing about this place. There is one semi-essay seemingly from the owner, directed at patrons, grousing about customers having certain expectations about the food they're served (Tex-Mex versus authentic Mexican, for example). The owner is adamant that authentic Mexican is served here, and I have no reason to doubt that at all nor expect anything different, but I must admit the tone was rather off-putting. I can see how it would be frustrating to have your food, your work, be misunderstood or misinterpreted, but it kind of felt like I was being lectured when I hadn't done anything, lol. At any rate, I walked up to the counter to order. Service was adequately if not /especially/ friendly. I placed an order for a sandwich (Tortugas de pollo) as well as a limonada (fresh-squeezed limeade) to go. I waited at one of the tables and my order was ready for me in a reasonable amount of time. My favorite thing was the limonada! It had closer to an Icee texture than a juice or limeade texture but I really liked it. Pleasantly sweet and sour and very refreshing. The sandwich was good if not mind-blowing. Maybe my expectations were just a little too high. One problem was that it got pretty soggy very, very fast - it took me less than 10 minutes to get back to my aunt's house and unbox my food and in that time, the bottom piece of bread on my sandwich was close to falling apart. Some of the chicken was also a little too strong-tasting for me; it's hard to describe but I imagine we've all had chicken that's a little too obviously...well, chicken, lol. Not super mild tasting meat, I guess is what I'm trying to say. That aside, I enjoyed the texture of the cheese and the heat of the peppers. The top slice of bread was also nice and crusty. The sandwich came served with a handful of chips less generous than it appears in the photo and some green salsa. The chips were a little over-fried for me but decent enough, and the subtly spicy salsa went well with them. I think the greatest sticking point for me is the price vs. the quantity of food vs. the relative enjoyment. My meal was a solid bit over $30. I prooooobably could've split the sandwich with someone else and been okay, but given the relatively paltry amount of chips, I was also okay eating it as a solo diner. I think if the price had been a little lower, or the portion of chips a little bigger, or the enjoyment of the sandwich a little greater - any one of those things - this would probably round up to a 4. But ultimately the sticker shock and somewhat condescending vibes lead to a lower rating from me. Idk, I would definitely say this restaurant is worth a try and I'm glad I experienced it and would recommend trying it to others who enjoy this type of Mexican food. That said, I'm also not completely confident I'd return on another visit to Memphis. Well, okay, I would definitely for the limonada. That thing was awesome. ;)
