Let me start by saying, my husband is a certifiable (uncertified) food critic and he should have his own tv show. With that being said, we were on our way back home from DFW and we were starving and desperately looking for somewhere delicious but still close to I20. We stumbled upon this delightful family owned restaurant. Granted, we showed up 30 mins before closing but I'm so glad we took a chance on this place. When you drive up, you're going to be skeptical BUT DON'T BE and it was a little warm in there but the food was so good, we hardly noticed. Everyone was polite and I could literally see her cooking our food fresh. They got us seated, served and fed so quickly that we overate and waddled our way out. This is by far the best food I have had in all of west Texas. We had tacos al pastor, chile rellenos, banana leaf wrapped tamales, and fried plantains. I got the "El Tripicito" it came with a pupusa, fried plantains, a chicken tamale (they were out of tamales so I substituted a flauta), and fried beans. I loved the pork, bean, and cheese pupusa I had. The pupusa was well toasted and crispy on both sides. The cheese was stringy and chewy (in a good way) while the pork and beans gave it flavor. As a child, I had a friend whose family would often get flautas at the grocery store. The ones I ate at their house were often soft. The ones at this establishment were harder kind of like a taquito. When I first bit into my flauta, I was a bit disappointed that it was so crunchy rather than soft like I thought it would be. The flauta was better once I dipped it in the fried beans. I am still not sure if I like it crunchy, but I am willing to try it again. The fried plantains were crispy on the outside, sweet and smooth on the inside. This definitely had a hole-in-the-wall feel to it. I will definitely be there again. If you want a tasty El Salvadoran lunch, I recommend checking this place out! read more

I ordered the chili relleno and a cheese and jalepeno pupusa for lunch and everything tasted great. I must agree with another Yelper that the beans were probably the best refried beans I've had. The poblano chile itself still had a lot of flavor and perfectly filled with ground beef and covered with tons of cheese. The pupusa was great because the waitress gave me a bucket of cabbage so I could put however much I wanted on there. Overall great, but during lunch time there was only 1 waitress who was a little overwhelmed and seemed frazzled. She told several tables that she was the only one there. Their food LOOKS good in pictures, but looks are not everything! This is one of those reviews I really hate to write. I am a huge supporter of small local businesses and especially authentic cuisine restaurants, but I must tell it like it is. It just pains me to do it. We got to the restaurant at 12:18 noontime on Saturday, and there were only two people in the restaurant. That was my first warning. We sat down and looked at the menu. The place had this not clean feel icky to it, and the smell was not a smell that made you hunger either. The lone server seemed like he might have drunk too much the night before and would rather be elsewhere. There were some offerings on the menu that really excited me, though, so we decided to stay. I love Caldo de Res, so I asked for a bowl of that. I was told they were out of it. My first thought was; "It is only 12:20 on a Saturday, and you are already out of a main dish? Where did it go? There are only two people in the restaurant." So, my next choice was the Chicken Mole. After a trip to the back, the server told me they were out of that too. So I said, "How about some Posole?" Again the sever had to go to the back to ask, and YEP, you guessed it, they were out of that too! Actually, they were out of about half the menu and pretty much all authentic dishes. They were down to some TexMex offerings and Papusas. Finally, I found the Pork Milanesa and ordered that. The other people at the table ordered pupusas, and my wife ordered the triple fajitas. If you have read my reviews, you know I am old school and do not believe in wasting food. I can't remember the last time I did not fully clean my plate at a restaurant and the leftover from my wife's plate as well. My Pork Milanesa was so bad; I could only force myself to choke down half of it and nibble at the refried beans and rice. I have had Melanesa style steaks many times in Mexico, and what I got was NOT a Milanesa. What it was is a plain piece of thinly slice pork steak with no seasoning of any kind (not even salt) that was battered in plain white refined flour that had no seasoning and cooked in straight oil with no seasoning, to the point of being boot-leather. Just imagine chewing on a flavorless piece of cowhide, and you will get the right idea of taste. The refried beans were old, cold and like the steak, had ZERO seasonings of any kind. They looked like leftovers from the day before (I am not sure they were not). The rice was the same. The simple fact is that nobody out of the eight people at the table could eat their food. I do not think the cook at this place even knows that any spice of any type exists in this world, and I am not being sarcastic. Imagine Mexican food that was put under a flavor vacuum and had all flavor sucked out of it. Nobody asked for a to-go box, and we left 80% of the food we ordered on the table. I have never in all my life seen my family do this before. I have eaten at many other El Salvadorian restaurants, and while it is true that they do not use as much spice as authentic Mexican cuisine, this cook does not even know what salt is. Now maybe, I just got there on a bad day, but honestly, noon on Saturday is the time when any restaurant should be at their best, with everything fully stocked, fresh, and ready to go. It is not like we showed up a half-hour before closing on a Tuesday night. And the last things is that, about an hour after eating there, my stomach went into knots with sharp shooting pains, and I had to make a mad dash for the commode. This is why I believe we were actually eating leftover food. I really hope that the owners of El Pulgarcito read this review and try to clean up their act. They need to clean up their establishment, get servers that want to serve, and find a new cook that knows at least what a salt shaker is, preferably other spices too. read more

Well, looks like El Pulgarcitos gets to be review # 900! I've been going to the south side restaurant for years, and the north side location just opened about a month ago. They serve Mexican and Salvadoran food. I'm a huge fan of the spicy ranchera porkchops. Best pupusas I've ever had. Tonight I tried El Tipico, a traditional Salvadoran plate. One pupusa, cheese and jalapeños of course. Fried plantains with a cream sauce. A Salvadoran chicken tamal, which is much bigger than a traditional tamale. And beans. I loved the pupusa and tamal. The fried plantains were ok. I don't know how to describe the tamal. A normal tamale has a thin shell around the filling. A tamal has a thick breading kind of shell around the chicken filling. Very good. Definitely something you should try. And if your not afraid of spicy, the ranchera porkchops will knock you out! The owners wife saw me and came out and said hello. Wonderful hard working people. Give them a try. Now, onward and upward to # 1000! read more

Wow! Talk about a hidden gem! This place may not look like much but these pupusas rocked my world. I had the pork and cheese, jalapeño and cheese, and zucchini and cheese. These beauties were made fresh and hot off the griddle. With their hot sauce and cabbage, the pork and cheese pupusa was one of the best bites of food I've had this year. God has a plan when he blessed Abilene with this hidden gem. We struck Mexican gold when we asked for the green spicy sauce. The shepherd's taco plate was on a whole other level once we asked for some grilled jalapeños to go with it. The papusa with queso and jalapeños will light up your taste buds with the green sauce along with the Salvadorian Tamale. Migas were good either the green sauce. I guess I'd eat my shoe if I put some of that green sauce on it. Regular salsa was ok and never got the guacamole that we ordered. I order pork pupusa but had added a cheese and jalapeños pupusa. They were both amazing. The downer was the Banana leaf tamale was just ok. Little over cooked and lacked seasoning. But with their salsa and some salt it was good. If you do not know what to get try out one of the plates, the Papusas are to die for. The family that runs it seems nice and I really hope the new place on Ambler is doing well. I love this place! It's not some fancy high end restaurant, it's a small family owned location. The food is amazing. The most important part of this review, and the strangest part... The refried beans. Who knew refried beans could be so good? Seriously, what do they do to the refried beans to make them a seriously desirable part of the meal? They're amazing. The salvadorean tamales, I'm not a big fan, but I can see why people like them. Now the papusas, man are those amazing! Service is always good, as expected.
