Monterey restaurant is one of the best kept secrets in town. It's also one of the best hole in the wall restaurants in town. Trinidad has owned it for years, and he and his staff do a really good job. Their prices are pretty cheap compared to other places in town, yet the food is fantastic. I guess I would describe it as homestyle Tex-Mex. Definitely a place you need to try if you want some good old style Tex-Mex. read more

We found this little jewel via YELP. It's not loaded with ambience, but who eats that anyway?? We tried multiple entrees. The crispy tacos were good. The chili relleno was very good and the cheese enchiladas were the star of the show!! Some of the best we've ever had.... and we've had a lot. The salsa was fresh, with a bit of kick. Beef enchiladas were generously filled with lean savory meat and topped with gooey melted cheese, bathed in the perfect red gravy. Onions optional. The hot sauce wasn't as good as usual. Chips were served hot and crispy. I noticed they no longer have the bullet ice in the drinks. Excellent service as always. Update 9.11.19: Hot sauce was so good, very hot! Our favorite waitress is so friendly and got our usual order out in record time as always. We've never seen the place so slammed as tonight! The kitchen was running efficiently even so. This was OTHERWORLDY amazing! Tried it today on a whim and I'm thrilled I did. I had the cheese enchiladas and I got a family member the taco salad. Every bite was amazing. And the deep fried Oreos? Are you kidding me? Fabulous! I used the drive through (which I love that they have!) and they guy that helped me was SOOO kind, welcoming and hilarious! He answered all my questions, gave me tips for next time (call ahead to order so it's ready for you when you get there!) and made solid jokes! I'm only sad I didn't know about this place sooner! Such an awesome place to eat if you want the best Tex-Mex in Abilene. We got take out and it was so good I will go back weekly. Hot sauce, guacamole is to die for, chips are fresh, tamale plate puts a perfect twist on how they are served. Beef enchiladas and combination nachos are pure perfection. Normally I have to drive to Fort Worth to get good food like this, but not anymore. Cheap prices : $28 for all of this. We'll finally tried this place, service was horrible took 20 min after ordering to get our soda and tea! We ordered nachos totally lame no jalepenos asked 3 x did not make it to the table until entire meal came out! By then what they called nachos were cold and soggy and little to no meat. food is terrible. queso was straight out of a can like nacho cheese for ballparks. the Gordita tasted like it was made with fabulous cleaner. it smelled and tasted like a chemical. our chips had a hat looked like mold on them but no one bothered to bring fresh ones out. Locally owned and operated...the whole family is part of the efficient and very friendly staff. Mama's usually cooking. This is not some chain restaurant with cloth napkins that charges you 15 bucks for a sad nacho appetizer. In fact, nachos are not mentioned on the menu. It's the real deal. This is a family run place with a lot of pride in their shop. The service was great; helpful, friendly, willing to make suggestions and worked well with us as we kept changing our order. The food itself is nothing fancy, no elaborate sauces or fancy presentations. It's just piled on the plate and served fresh and hot. The chicken isn't dry or stringy, the ground beef isn't greasy or mealy, and the nachos aren't piled high with fixings. Portion sizes are generous. Three of us split a half order of nachos and it was the right size for the table. The space is pretty good sized. It's sparsely furnished, so don't look for cheap Mexican tacky souvenirs or the Wals, but the space is clean and pleasant. Is was visiting the area, so not a local. Nevertheless when I'm back in Abilene this will be on my list of places to go back to. read more
