We sent a friend over there to order and take out some food. There were two associates behind the front counter that were unaware he spoke and understood the language. Needless to say, they were saying that they were upset and using profane language. If a paying customer enters the establishment, regardless who they are, unless they have caused any problems, it is absolutely unacceptable to treat others differently, discriminate, or say things "behind their back". He was very disgusted, and we will not ever be going back for dine in or carry out. They may have good food, but it they continue treating people like that, things will get worse. read more

My coworkers used to regularly go to this restaurant pre-pandemic. Their pupusas are phenomenal! I've tried the cheese, bean, and loroco (squash flower). Nothing beats their curtido, it tastes really fresh and goes perfectly with the pupusas. The service has always been excellent. We would usually go with the server's recommendations, and tried a lot of different items that way. I'm vegetarian and there was plenty to choose from, plus they're willing to adapt items. For example, we like to get the fried yuca which typically comes with chicharron and a pickled salad on top. They put the chicharron on the side so that I could eat the dish. It can sometimes take a while to get the food from the kitchen, I wouldn't recommend it if you're in a rush. read more

I have fond memories of this place when I was younger and we would come often since we lived close to it then. Years later I have returned, expectations were a little high from my childhood memories. I've been to one close to where I live and it is a pretty sad place. I got the beans and cheese pupusas. Not too oily, which is an important factor. Must say the place did not disappoint. The customer service is spot on. I've been back twice recently and both times customer service was great. They only take cash by the way!! Seeing how hard it is to find a decent salvadorian restaurant in Houston, you will not find anything better! read more

Came here with my boyfriend and his family & one of the dishes that we ordered completely was forgotten. When we initially asked our server where the food was, her response was "what are you talking about?" then quickly turned around and said "the food is almost ready, the sausage takes a long time to cook". it was very clear and obvious that she forgot to put that order in because not only did we wait a total of 30 minutes for that one rice plate to come out, but everyone else had already finished eating. the servers attitude was very nonchalant about the whole thing. not once did she apologize for HER mistake. instead, she chose to lie to cover herself. she never once came to check on us. we will not be returning here. Service overall was very slow, and adding on top of that a forgotten order made a it experience 10x worse. read more

I hadn't had pupusas since a trip to El Salvador and today that changed. My husband and I both heard of this place when we went to HBU so we decided to try out El Pupusodromo today before class. I should mention that my husband and I are very, very white, very 'American' but we speak a moderate amount of Spanish to get through conversations. Upon entering it seems super sketchy but don't let it phase you. I order El Combinado A: with two pork and cheese pupusas, a corn tamale with chicken, and fried yuca. The yuca was incredible. It was crispy and tasted exactly like a french fries. The tamale was so-so. The pupusas were delicious without a doubt: perfectly soft and dense. I HIGHLY recommend El Pupusodromo to anyone in the HBU Bissonet/Fondren area. Yes it may be somewhat difficult to communicate with the staff but their menu is in Spanish and English so pointing always works. They do have television and the jukebox that will randomly kick up but it adds to the atmosphere. read more

Went last night for a late-night Pupusa adventure. We ended up here because 1) I'd been before a million years ago and 2) the original place I'd gone to was closed. We got there around 9:40, and they closed at 10, so they were only doing to-go orders. Yes, it's mostly in Spanish - although there are translations on the menu. The waitress who helped us was VERY friendly and spoke English enough to explain things. We ordered four pupusas: cheese and loroco (a flower of some sort. This ended up being very mild and tasted almost like a cheese pupusa), cheese and ayote (zucchini. This ended up being my favorite. It was flavorful and just.. yummy!), a revuelta (I thought this was a combo of beans and cheese and pork, but it seemed to have just been pork. Either way, it was yummy), and a pupusa with fajita beef (This wasn't my favorite. I'm not really sure why, but it just.. didn't hit the spot like the others.) And then I got a medium horchata. This one was granier and had more cinnamon than ones I've had before. I wouldn't order it again. All in all, 20 minutes before closing we came into a restaurant with helpful staff, for made-fresh pupusas, and left without paying more than $11 for all that. I'd go again, for sure. :) As per the logos on the door, they take all major credit cards. I didn't see anything about a minimum charge either. BTW. Pupusas are an appetizer here. I regretted coming to this place!!! They taking over an hour to serve a breakfast plate of huevos Rancheros even if the restaurant is empty!! The servers have such a bad attitude. With a limited amount of cash on me and limited to what's within walking distance of my friend's place, my dining options came down to El Pupusodromo, a taco truck (which appeared not to offer drinks, just tacos), and a Taco Bell. I felt adventurous, so I tried out El Pupusodromo. The first thing I noticed is that the waitstaff appear to know very little English. I admire attempts to have an authentic El Salvadoran dining experience but being left unsure if the waitress understood my order and was unable to understand my basic questions such as "what comes on this?" is going a bit far. Most of the menu was out of my price range. I chose something which, on the face of it, sounded good, "Pan Con Gallina" which was labeled as a chicken sandwich. In my opinion, it's horribly mislabeled and the menu was very vague as to what exactly came on it. I should have taken a picture. Their definition of "chicken sandwich" appears to be about half of a chicken (bones and all!) plopped down over an at-first-unnoticed piece of bread, soaked in some kind of sauce that had a vague resemblance to cole slaw, with a couple of tomatoes, some radishes, and parsley thrown off to the side. This is not close to any American definition of sandwich. I was expecting something with at least a vague resemblance to, say, the Chicken Fajita Pita at Jack in the Box. I'm not ruling this place out completely for future visits, but I am making a note to myself that their definition of "sandwich" was way too creative for my tastes. Oh, by the way, no soda fountain either; expect to pay $1.50 for a 12 ounce can. read more

This little Salvadori and restaurant has good food for us prices. Another good thing is that you don't really need to know Spanish. We had chicken and shrimp plates both were quite tasty. Side note-do not order a water to drink it tastes like sewer. I suggest the horchata. I'll be going back there again. read more

And the Ms. Pacman machine in the back does have a dim screen and the juke box only kicks on every 15 minutes and plays only what it wants to play. But the quality of the food is solid and let's face it, outside of El Salvador it aint easy finding a decent pupusa. And this is coming from somebody married into the El Salvador cooking tradition. So I have very advanced pupusa taste buds. So check this place out and first order a jugo de ensalada (very refreshing fruity drink). And then load up on the pupusas!! i think pupusas arent as popular as they could be because: 1.) phonetically, the word is evocative of several english words that describe objects of highly debatable edibility, and 2.) central american food (in this case, salvadoran) is often overshadowed by, or lumped together with the rich, culinary traditions of mexico and various south american countries. which is a shame, because pupusas are delicious, and this is a good place to try them out. This area that the restaurant is located is where I live so I decided to try it out. I tried the Loroco, Revueltas and Queso pupusas and they were good, but the pickled cabbage I wasn't too fond of. I also liked their tamales and the salsa was different in a good way.. more of a minty flavor. I was initially impressed with the service because as a non-Spanish speaking girl I get a little nervous with my pronunciation plus I feel like some of my questions about the menu might be dumb, but the lady there was super sweet and helped me figure out stuff. This is the first time I've ever wished for there to be a 0 star option. Came for breakfast at 10:30am. Left WITHOUT food at 11:45. Ridiculous!!! The place only had like 3 other tables. We ordered two plates huevos rancheros, 4 pupusas for one person and 2 pupusas for another person. We waited a good 45 minutes with NOTHING. Honestly. How hard is it to make eggs? Finally at the 50 minute mark the eggs came out. At the hour mark the lady brought the pupsas. Bit even though we told the server lady like 3 times we only wanted 2 pupusas for my father in law...she still brought 3. And was going to charge us for the 3rd! Stupid!!! We had plans at 12 and told them screw it we'll take it to go. The lady insisted on putting the food in the to go box herself. She just threw everything in together mixed. At that point...I didn't want to eat the shit. We left without eating and without food. And I bet that stupid server is telling the people in back (who probably aren't ACTUALLY working since it took 45 minutes to just get eggs) that we are the crazy ones and mistreating her. No no. Never again. Been here before to try and support little businesses but screw that. Mediocre food at best and shit service. Do yourself a favor and just make food at home.
