Delicous pupusas! Hands down some of the best pupusas I have ever had! I love that they have a handful of vegetarian options. My favorite is the loroco and cheese. I tried a rice flour pupusa and thought it was stellar! I could eat the salsa that comes with the pupusas by the spoonful. The cabbage salad is also delicious! Parking can be a bit dicey because of where the restaurant is located and how busy the restaurant can get. However, I ordered via DoorDash in my order arrived piping hot. Eight years later, this isn't a buffet restaurant anymore as Pupusa Buffet is now shortened to simply Pupusa. Not sure if they are still part of the Cocina Latina chain, since I order everything through delivery apps these days and can't view the paper menus. Besides, the cafeteria ambience encourages takeouts. What I like about this place is that the food is still cheap, there are plenty of options beyond pupusas, and I like the crisp fresh curtido and salsa. I really like their thick red bean tamales which are wrapped in banana leaves which impart their flavours further if you were to resteam or microwave them. I also like that they have ayote (squash) pupusas in addition to the traditional vegetarian options of loroco and beans. read more

Loroco Pupusa - 4/5 The Loroco kind of tasted like artichoke, which was pleasantly surprising. The pupusa dough was nice and soft but was also pretty dense. However, the flavors of this pupusa paled in comparison to the pork, bean, and cheese pupusa. Pork, Bean, and Cheese Pupusa - 5/5 This pupusa was my favorite of the two kinds I got; I wish I ordered more of this one! The filling was so flavorful, and you could taste each of the three ingredients inside. The exterior is super unassuming, with just a sign on their building titled "Pupusa". The interior was nice and clean, and the man at the cashier was super friendly. We asked him if they still served the drink (fresco de cebada) here, and he confirmed and even let us sample some for no charge! The food was very inexpensive ($5 for 3 pupusas) and delicious, and it came with dipping sauces and cabbage salad. If you want truly authentic Salvadoran food, look no further. I'm talking "none of the staff speaks English and there are grandmas rolling out pupusas in the back" authentic. The room is set up in a cafeteria-style and you order at the counter. There was a pretty long line when I visited last on a weekend, but I didn't much mind the wait as I took in the beautiful mural of a rural scene on the back wall and basked in the collective warmth of families with their giggling children eating breakfast all around me. The pupusas have the ideal texture, soft and gummy, packed with salty cheese and best doused with the tart and pungent curtido (slaw) and hot sauce. Don't skip out on the Loroco variety, which features a crunchy and delicious edible flower indigenous to Central America. The squash pupusas are great as well. The one with Cheese, Beans, and Pork one was savory and rich but could've used more of each ingredient. OMG I've never had such fresh pupusas for only $5!!???? Ayce ! If you happen to call them and ask what time they close you better know spanish because you will get a " QUE QUE ???" They close at 9 pm sat Ok, everybody pretty much covered all corners on what was to review about this place and they were pretty much on the spot. My son and I just came from eating Pho a couple of hours before that and decided to drive way across town just to try this little place. The first thing I noticed when I parked and got out of my car which was about a good 15 yards from the door was the smell of what they were cooking. My son who is half Salvadorean widened his eyes and started acting like a kid in a toys r us store when he walked in and said "all you can eat!??" Those of you that have teenagers know how much they can eat right? Well when we finally finished we downed a total of 11 pupusas all together. Him 6 and me 5, I could not open my jaw anymore. Having been introduced to Pupusas for about 17 years and dragged all over Houston to almost every Pupusa restaurant there was because of his mother allowed me the nice experience knowing when I'm eating a good or bad batch and I can tell you this, this was the best pupusas I have ever tasted in my life. I would have been glad to pay $7.99 instead of the $4.99. They were that good. If you do not speak Spanish you might have a little hard time communicating what you need but there are numbers 1 through 6 where you can point and the nice little young lady behind the food will serve to you. It is a good thing I can speak spanish fluently and they even had a hard time understanding me! The only con I have is if you are not of hispanic descent or Asian like me, be prepared to be looked over a little strange by the patrons and the counter ladies but they mean no harm. Heck I do the same sometimes like when I'm at a Pho' place and see a construction truck full of "amigos" get out and step into where I am eating with chopsticks. I definately will return and will probably become a duke here by the years end. I live about 20 miles from this place and distance and price is not going to keep me from my new found gold. I'm disappointed that they no longer have the all you can eat buffet. Other than that the food is amazing! I ordered the bean and cheese pupusa and also a bean, cheese, and pork. I topped them with both salsas and cortido. I also tried then yuca con chicharron which was pretty good. I enjoyed their food so much I went back for another pupusa and also this fried corn thing that came with crema, I can't remember what it was called, but it was so good! I ate until my stomach felt like it was going to explode. I see some reviews on here saying they paid $1.39 per pupusa. Prices have gone up since then and they are now $1.50 each which is not bad at all. For my husband and I eat it was only $24 and we ordered A LOT. I would list everything we ordered out, but I'm honestly embarrassed 2 people ate that much. read more

I love a man who can work his tongue. Oh, wait. I mean, a man who can handle two different languages easily is a sexy beast. Come here and your probability of finding such a man will be pretty darn high along with some tasty pupusas. Forget the Colbert Bump: I'm bumping up my own rating from 3.5 stars to 4 stars for this humble "Little Buffet That Could". Set in a fresh new strip center just south of Bissonnet and Hillcroft, I was lured to explore it by a totally random Yelp review (Ashley W's, if you're curious). Seeing John D's review only added fuel to this fire. The interior isn't the largest but the tables are clean and newish with a bright landscape mural of towns in El Salvador on each end wall. You pay your money up front ($5.40 including tax for the buffet only) and then pick up a styrofoam plate at the steam table. Choose among the 6 types and the steam table lady will unwrap the foil and put your chosen type and quantity on your plate. Move down and ladle up some picante salsa and/or some curtido (the zingy cabbage salad: think coleslaw). Grab and seat and enjoy while watching some Spanish telenovelas on the big screen TVs. I sampled one of each of 4 types: pupusa revuelta (pork, beans, and cheese), the loroco con queso, the ayote with cheese, and the plain beans and cheese. Some definitional terms from my transplanted El Salvadoran co-worker: Loroco is a flower that grows on a vine and used in various dishes. It has a pronounced flavor when fresh so is mixed with other ingredients to dilute its strength. Ayote is a baby pumpkin-squash vegetable and is considered a delicacy. [Okay, lesson over.] The loroco and ayote versions were tasty but not "out there funky". To be frank, the loroco was kind of bland. The ayote was different since you could see the spinach-like vegetable in the pupusa. I'd say you could serve your country-bumpkin Aunt Winifred these items and she would be okay with these "exotic" items if she can handle corn, cheese, and beans. The other pupusas were similarly mainstream but the reason for the star upgrade were the lovely charring those maize rounds took after their visit to the griddle, the tangy salsa, and the sour crunch of the curtido. The combination made for some nice eating. Of course, as the only Asian man in the place, both the cashier and the steam table lady gave me the eye to see if I really was eating these pupusas as well as whether or not I was enjoying them. After catching them eyeballing me, I kept on eating and gave them each a big grin. Or, the grin could have been due to a neighboring table of three young men who effortlessly flowed between flawless English and Spanish. Super sexy at how they shimmied between the two languages. I wanted to lean over and say "I like your pupusas" but worried that it would come off sounding dirty. Would it sound less dirty in Spanish? I thought not. read more
