While it's possible I'm among the minority, I'm incredibly happy with the offerings here. In the last couple of years since moving from NYI, I haven't found many legit Venezuelan options until recently here at Sabor Venezolano. I'm pleased to report that the food lives up to the name and most everything was quite sabroso and very Venezuelan. The place is bigger than it looks from the outside, but seating is really limited to solo diners and small groups. There are counter seats toward the back and small cafe tables in the front. There are some refrigerated items for grab and go while ordering is done at the counter. I'd recommend calling ahead of time for faster pickup. If you're able to order in Spanish, do it. The food gets a thumbs up. Much of the menu is Venezuelan specific which includes cachapas, arepas, tumbarachos, patacondes, and tequeños. While they have a "menú Mexicano" that features quesadillas, tacos, burritos, and tortas, I'd avoid it if at all possible. The arepas might appear to be smaller, but they're packed. I personally loved their jamón y queso guayanés, in which the latter is a thick slab of gooey cheese. A similar arepa is their mechada y queso guayanés, which is equally tasty and I appreciate that they have cazón (#1) as an option. The pelua (beef + cheese) and reina (shredded chicken with avocado) will be my perpetual favorites and the cachapas with tequeños are also particularly hearty. The food is a bit pricier than most Venezuelan fare I've had previously, foodflation never surprises me anymore. The food was good. I got an arepa with shredded beef and cheese. Simple and flavorful. I wish it had some lettuce and tomatoe but I'm glad it didn't have any mayonnaise or onions. We started with tequenos with cheese and guava, which I loved. The leftovers were great in the air fryer the next day with some coffee. My bf got a Venezuelan version of a Jibarito - a sandwich using fried plantains as the bread. It was a heavy meal, with shredded chicken, ham, lettuce, tomatoes, cabbage and mayonnaise. It was OK, but I don't like that much mayo or ham. The plantains were crunchy and huge. He took the top layer home and it was great as a breakfast with a fried egg. There's a lot on the menu and if you just walk in, like we did, it can be a little overwhelming to choose while they wait at the counter. This is a great little place if you like affordable food with generous portions. I was looking for arepas and realized after getting them that they are differently than the Colombian ones. This Venezuelan version has loads of white cheese peaking out the little corn sandwich. It was very filling. We also tried the meat versions that are stuffed with your choice of meat. The tequeños are flaky breadsticks with melted cheese inside. You get five and they're also very tasty. This place is a great find to try a variety of food, come hungry! read more

After the Astros' victory in the 2022 World series, I really wanted to celebrate some Venezuelan dishes. You know Jose Altuve is from Venezuela. I visited Sabor Venezolano. I ordered a lunch plate. It was so good though I had no idea about Venezuelan cuisine. I especially loved arepa which is similar to pupusas in El Salvador. Regarding the name, Sabor Venezolano, sabor means flavor or taste in English. But it sounds like saboru(さぼる) in Japanese. Saboru means " I skip or ditch school in Japanese"! UPDATE So as you can see below the owner chose to respond to my comment about the price of the food (which by the way $8 for a SMALL arepa is a lot to pay for just plain cheese.) However, did not want to own up to the quality of the food served. At the end of the day the food was bad. So if you pay $1 or $20 it still ended up in the garbage because it tasted and looked horrible. I gave them one star just so that I can post this review. I paid $22 for TWO arrepas. Unbelievable I thought maybe they are really big. Boy was I WRONG. The lady at the restaurant handed me a tiny small oily paper bag and before she gave me this tiny bag containing my $22 dollar worth of arrepas she asked me for PROOF that I was the one that actually purchased this item. Once at my desk I opened this package and took a look at the mess within. The arrepa was drenched in old oil cheese was congealed to the sides hard and crunchy the arrepa itself was lukewarm and the contents inside just thrown in there. It was the most unappetizing item I have EVER ordered in my entire life. After paying $22 I tried to eat this and could not. I had to spit the food out. My stomach was hurting after a few bites. Wow, I haven't been this disappointed by a meal in a LONG time and my husband and I eat out often. We ordered a platter "bistec encebollado" with two sides one of black beans and coleslaw. Also ordered two SMALL empanadas and a can of soda. $27. When we did the math in the car, it did NOT add up! I'm Colombian, I speak fluent Spanish so it's not like she didn't understand a word I said. We waited 30 minutes!!!! The food was DISGUSTING!! The meat was extremely cheap quality, it couldn't have been more over cooked and was cold once it hit the table. Black beans were nasty, NO seasoning. I had to ask for onion and cilantro to give it flavor and when I did request that, they looked at me like I had a third f*****g eye. The coleslaw had no flavor just soaked in Mayo. I really really hate to give them 1 star because food is amazing! But when owning a restaurant customer service is #1 always. Even if the food isn't good, if the customer service is a 10 chances of you going back are better because you love the service. I went there for first time yesterday 1/22/23 and I got *Rice and beans with platanos * Empanadas de platanos y queso * yoyo * can't remember name of other All were amazing solid 9.2 the bananas were sweet and cooked perfect. The rice and beans iD give a 4.2 the rice is dry for my liking and beans need flavor. Other than that everything else was solid. Today 1/23/23 we decided to go back to get empanadas de queso y platanos that was the whole purpose of going today because we enjoyed them so much yesterday. We placed our order of 3 and went to our hotel 15 minutes away. My mother ate half before she noticed there's no platanos on there. I was eating my tequenos so I didn't know. She grabbed a knife and cut other in half to see if platanos were in there. NOPE! so she called and told the lady with glasses that they messed up her order and to my surprise the lady was very rude to my mother saying that's what we ordered. No it's not! We went there to get what we got yesterday. So after arguing back and forth the lady says to bring them back my mom agrees and she said she can only give us 2 because my mom ate half of other one. So she explained how she ate half and noticed there's no platanos. We ended up going back to get our new ones but I lost my appetite after that. They didn't taste good banana / platano wasn't sweet. Just overall horrible service from her. We are new to Houston from Chicago and we thought we found our new spot. After today we won't be going back. I don't care how good food is. Ordered this via doordash and was a little concerned by the reviews but I was pleasantly surprised! Everything was great. I ordered a cachapa, plantain and cheese arepa, and nutella tequeños. Only thing I probably wouldn't get again were the tequeños. I think I just prefer cheese and to dip into nutella but they weren't badly made, just not my preference! Cheese was wonderful and stretchy as it should be. I LOVE Venezuelan cheese and hate when people substitute shredded mozz. They were stopped outside MFAH for their Thursday HH. My dining partner and I opted for the Venezuelan burger and Patacone. The burger was amazing - with little fries to add some crunch. The sauce it came with was kind of spicy though! (and I didn't have water on me...eek!) The patacone was a unique dish. The "bread" was actually made from plantains - double fried and super crispy. I've been craving Venezuelan food ever since I tried Gusto Gourmet and I found this food truck off of Yelp with pretty good ratings and usually those are the authentic stuff. The food was dried everything was dried, we had --Sifrina Arepas - (2/5) Shredded chicken, very bland but creamy and the chicken was dried. It was stuffed in a corn pocket sandwich which is an arepas. --Pabellon Arepas - (1/5) Shredded beef, very bland, very dried also in a sandwich made of corn. --Empanadas (chicken, shredded beef, and ham and cheese) they were exactly the same thing as the Arepas but in an empanada. The ham and cheese was the only thing I probably like and I didn't eat it till the next day. When they made it, it was literally a stick of mozzarella cheese in there so they never had melted the inside. The service and food offered by this Venezuelan restaurant are unfortunate. I went on 02/025/2023 I ordered a beef soup to take away for my daughter and it only had zucchini and a bone. I ordered a cachapa for myself which cost $11 and was tiny in size. During the stay, the waiters brought multiple wrong orders, total chaos, and disorder in the service provided. The worst thing happened at the end when I requested a chicha (Venezuelan drink made from rice paste) to carry out, which was dispatched after a lack of respect and overconfidence on the part of the owner (first time I saw him). This is the type of Venezuelan with a lack of culture and education that darkens the brilliance of most of the Venezuelans who live in this country. the food was fresh, hot, well-prepared, flavorful, and for the most part packaged well. the quesillo was great, but a good amount ofthe caramel liquid leaked from the to-go container and left other items sticky. i appreciated the foil over the papelón cup, and i'd recommend foil for the quesillo. i was pleasantly surprised by the generous size of the pabellón empanada. it was perfectly prepared. i added cilantro and it was amazing! the queso pastelito maracucho was delightful as a complement to the plátanos (plantains). the plantains were delicious. the tequeños nutella (5) were good, but not amazing like everything else. i don't know why i waited so long to try sabor, but i will definitely be a repeat customer! read more

The arepa was over cooked, dry inside, too crunchy and they messed up my order adding white cheese instead of yellow cheese. Carne mechada was good, and cachapa was a bit bitter. The food I think is ok, not that great but of course you don't have a lot of competence near by therefore you abuse with the prices. I've lived in Houston a little over a year now and I have yet to have bad service. Until today. I had read a few reviews on Google and Yelp before deciding on stopping by here, there seemed to be a common theme that the food was good but the service is lacking. I have to agree. There was no greeting as I approached the counter. It was a little awkward. 'Bienvenida', 'Welcome', 'Can I help you', algo. Something is usually said. I got nothing. I get that I don't look Latina ( I am) so maybe you didn't know which language to speak to me, but a smile or something to make me feel welcome would have gone a long way. I ordered arepas, empanadas, and a juice. No thank you or anything, you walked away and left the counter before I even completed payment. I waited for a bit, then decided to take a seat. I watched 3 young men receive their food, eat it all and leave. I watched as a man who came in 5 minutes after me was served and started to eat. I made eye contact with several employees and saw the kitchen clear out. Seriously? I finally ask one lady if the food was ready. I didn't have a difficult order. She checked receipts and then brought me out my order with an apology for la demora. If the place was packed with people I would be a little more understanding of poor service, but this was not the case.
