I tried the burrito today. Not a burrito guy but wanted something different. It was standard burrito fair. Some beans. Some rice. Some meat. Some sauce. It was good. But it was a burrito. Not hard to do an okay burrito. The tostada is where I was hoping for the usual greatness of this restaurant. I took a bite. The tostada seemed slightly overcooked. That's okay. I can deal with it. It slightly altered the taste, but okay. The rest of it was pretty tasty. Until....bad carnitas. I mean...bad carnitas. One bite was 100% fat. I know they saw it when they put it on. Some like that, I don't. And then...some bites that were not chewable - or digestible. Then another bad bite. Tostados are not too big. So there are only so many bites. This one made me never want to try carnitas there again. It's too bad. The people there are always nice. The food used to be great. Now. Not so much.

I've had a few things from here but typically find the enchiladas and burritos are my favorite. I ordered horchata as well and got a HUGE cup and it was delicious. I haven't had their tacos, but as there are plenty of amazing taco trucks in cville that I would probably just come to el puerto for non-taco offerings. Guadalajara was my childhood go-to for Mexican and it saddens me that it's become completely overpriced with small portions and bland undercooked food. El puerto on the other hand has quietly continued excellent service, food quality and prices for years on end. I will pick el puerto over guad any day of the week!

The largest glaring problem with this restaurant is the price point. Unbelievably expensive. It has the price point of high end establishment but the quality just does not match what you get. It almost feels like they had to jack up the prices to cover the costs of the decor in this place. I would go again but quite honestly I don't know if I'd be willing to pay that price twice.
