The store was somewhat busy at the time so none of the ladies that usually make the elotes were able to make mine. A white guy that I usually see bagging/cleaning ended up making mine and I'm honestly so disappointed!! I usually do my grocery shopping at Ultra but the meat and produce at this little market is always fresh and very good. Not only do they sell your normal findings as you would any little corner market but they also have a taqueria inside. They sell the best burritos, tortas and tacos. Okay.. I am upgrading my review of this grocery store/taqueria.. I have been here a few more times since my last review and my orders have come out faster and more importantly correct!! Good thing because they have good tacos, tortas and gorditas (all I have tasted so far). Be sure to keep an eye out for their weekly food specials, $1.25 tacos, $1.25 enchiladas, to name a few. Nice neat neighborhood mini-mercado with fresh produce & butcher shop. Gringo friendly great source for horchata mixes, Jarritos & other deliciousness i can't find at nearby chain stores. While likely known to people who come here often, this place was a find for me during a last minute search to serve horchata and make mojitos for a Mexican-food themed birthday party. Helpful people made the trip quick and fruitful. The only drawback wouid be the size of this place which has only two checkout counters and only one that could take credit cards. read more

You may not realize it,but this grocery store has some of the best Mexican food in town! Everything I have ever eaten here has been phenomenal. Their steak burrito is the best! The ingredients(lettuce, tomatoes) taste like they just came fresh from the farmers market. The steak is always tender and juicy. The sides of beans and rice that they give you are great. As a matter of fact I always get an extra order of both. The only other grocery store in Chicago that I know of that has better tacos than El Ranchito Market is La Internacional on Ashland but that place is just one of a kind. I can't speak for the grocery store. But the little restaurant they have is amazing. The tacos are the best. And their taco special is on Monday instead of Tuesday. So if you have another place you like for taco Tuesday you can dine on tacos two days in a row. Their burritos are the best and on Weds they're $3.50. Some of the best carnitas I've had in awhile. Usually I would go to Cermak but that was out of the way and I was in this area. I originally came here for home made/ house made sofrito, which they unfortunately do not have. However there are some jar options. Anyways, while I was here I decided to order some carnitas. Puerto Rican's call it Lechon, others call it pulled pork. I got a pound and it lasted two meals for me and my kids. A lot of times I order it from Cermak and it's mostly fat hardly any meat. The first night I put it over fries with chihuahua cheese a little red salsa and pico. I guess you can call it carnitas fries. It was amazing. The second night I made carnitas tacos on Corn tortillas with cilantro and pico. Tempted to go back and order some more even though it's not close to home unfortunately. This place is small. Small selection of produce but there is a taqueria inside and there aren't many options for Spanish/ Hispanic grocery stores on this side of town so u just gotta work with what u got. read more

Went there to get some skirt steak for grilling and found it way over priced at 6.99 a pound. I needed 20 lbs of it and ordered at the counter. A different butcher came out and tried to sell me a cheaper cut but i told him no id take the skirt steak. After standing there for 15 minutes while assuming they were getting the meat ready they came back and told me they didn't have enough and could only sell me the cheaper cut. I asked how much they had and was told none. (I was looking at 5lbs of it sitting in front of me) I ended driving down to 18th and Loomis where I've been told they always have great meat and paid way less for way better service. read more

El Ranchito is a very good quality store but my complaint is why do they not carry English papers such as the Sun-Times, Chicago Tribune or other periodicals plus they seem to hire only those of Hispanic descent. I am a Hispanic myself but wouldn't you think that they would also strive to be diverse including in their hiring? I wonder if they have received a tax break from the city to locate here and if so why wasn't a compromise made to hire locally and diverse as a gesture of good faith. I understand that there are Employment laws that they are not required to hire locally but??????? Great store though I'll admit that but they need to be more inclusive of the residents in hiring as all the other establishment in Blue Island. There is an extraordinary little taqueria tucked away in this Mexican grocery store. Every week they run a special, and invariably it's a great deal.
