We stopped in one evening and it was a great decision. My husband always says the best Mexican restaurants look like a Spanish toy box and he was spot on about this place. The spicy top shelf margarita was delicious and my husband liked the 2 for 1 house margaritas. For dinner we ordered a beef chimichanga, fajita chicken taco salad, and the boys had the kids chicken and beef nachos. Everything was perfect and exactly what we were craving. We moved from Birmingham and have been searching to find our 'Mexican restaurant'. We always end up here. My only complaint is the distance from my house. We have tried FIVE different place closer to home, but El Rancho has proven again and again that they are worth the drive. The service is always impeccable, the food is amazing, and it feels like home. We showed up late after waiting at another restaurant for 45 min. Ordered online. Got to restaurant, they did not have my order. They claimed I probably ordered at another place, because they don't do online orders. I insisted it was them and showed the address for the restaurant and the order. They checked their tablet and discovered the order and said that they just didn't hear the order come through. Eventually got my food and was told they were out of the drinks I ordered. They don't do refunds for online orders and offered me something else. I didn't really want it, but at $3.50 a drink x 3, I just went with the other drink option. They tried to give me 1 and I told them I ordered 3. Had to show them the order again to prove it. Which would normally be fine, but after how unapologetic they were about the whole experience, I just found it frustrating. Got home and discovered they had left out an entire meal. I have dined in or ordered take out many times and have never been disappointed. Even when you get take out, they give you an order of chips and salsa. My favorite are the chicken enchiladas but I've also had burritos, tamales and liked them all. read more

my husband and I used to love this place. we would get a to go order every Friday night. last 3 times, they have gotten the order wrong. I let it go until the 3 rd time. I ordered taco shrimp dinner and an ala carete beef chimichanga. my chimichanga was a flour taco with just cheese with melted cheese sauce on top. called to speak to mgr and was very nice and explained my grieVance. she told me I ordered a beef burrito. I said no it is supposed to be a chimichanga. there's no beef in it and it's a taco. she said well you must have ordered an enchilada. no, it's a freakin taco with no beef! she said well we asked your husband to check the order and he did. she said she was not going to credit me. I was livid and hung up. will never spend my money there again. read more

It's been a while since I've visited this place. It has a nice environment to relax and grab a bite. Stopped by today just to grab a quick late lunch. I noticed they had the beef fajitas on special for 11.99 (Sunday special). So I decided to have that and a soft drink. Service was friendly. Food came out fast and tasted great. Total bill was around $20 including the tip. Excellent experience. Highly recommended if you're looking for a good place with delicious food that isn't overpriced. read more

I had the Chile Colorado and it was the absolute BEST Mexican I have had in a long time! It has kick with a flavor that can't be beat! I've have regularly dined at this place for about 4-5 years now. This place has the best mexican food on the Northshore. However this isn't even the best part. After ordering the same drink/appetizers for years, Bernardo has caught on and brings us drinks when greeting us and then goes and gets the Carne con Queso and brings it out right after. Although I only got takeout and ate it in my car, I feel like I can give a pretty fair call, at least about the food. I ordered a burrito supreme with shredded chicken to go. The tastes were there, although the presentation of the burrito was pretty poor. It was completely out of tact, so I had to eat it with a fork..which I didn't mind. It didn't have the ingredients that I would expect in a burrito supreme, unless they were just lost in the mush. Again, it tasted fine...just didn't really look like the burrito I was expecting. Good price, so I'm not completely dissatisfied. The burrito with chips and salsa came out to like $7 or something, which is pretty decent. Not too keen on the salsa...a little weird tasting. Happy hour every day, and they're open til like 10pm, so that in itself is quite amazing for the Northshore. Stopped into El Rancho as a friend and I were riding along the Tammany Trace. Amazing that more restaurants have not opened along the trace considering the amount of traffic on it daily. I was with a vegetarian which made the selection of places to go to very light. I ordered the special enchiladas that was very good. My friend on the other hand ordered the vegetarian plate. The veggie plate was filled with cheese items that my friend didn't like. Sometimes its hard being a vegetarian and it was for him on this day. Our favorite Mexican resturant hands down! Not only is it easily accessible, service is great, and prices are easy on the wallet. The two for one draft from 5-10 happy hour is great for beer lovers.
