6th time here & it never disappoints! The Hubs wanted to try the wings this time which he did. With Mexican BBQ sauce. They were so good. Just a hint of spank & smoke. He also had Menudo. Super flavorful broth , with tender strips of tripe. He LOVED it. His head broke out in a sweat, causing the waiter to laugh. I had Arros con pollo . So good. Strips of marinaded grilled chicken. Onions & mushrooms almost charred over a perfectly cooked rice with a white cheesy sauce. Side fresh little salad with a scoop of guacamole. The server was great! Friendly, attentive . We don't really speak Spanish, but it's not a problem at all. We can each get our point across with out that being a barrier. The atmosphere, at least in the dinning room, is typical. The November special is the shrimp burrito. This is a delicious burrito stuffed with perfectly cooked shrimp along with spinach and mushrooms. My husband got the El Rey burrito which is stuffed with loads of steak, chicken, beans and rice. Everything was fresh and tasty! My husband said the steak was fork tender. We had an ok time at El Rey this week. We had a party of five at around 6pm on Sunday, and the restaurant wasn't particularly crowded. We got to our seats quickly, but it took a while for our server to come over. Once we finally ordered, drinks came quick enough. I was surprised that despite the decorations, the restaurant was kind of dark. Not the best vibe. The food itself was ok. The California burrito was fine, though it had big chunks of steak inside that were kind of hard to chew through. Skip the fries, they weren't great. We also got their burger, which was torched. The mac and cheese kids meal was just Kraft, which they didn't tell us up front or include that in the menu. Our toddler liked it enough, but it wasn't the most enriching meal. read more

Food ok, had taco luncheon. Margaritas are made with a mix, so taste artificial and not much tequila! What really put me off returning is the overpowering plug-in type chemical fragrance smell throughout the restaurant, so strong, nauseating and takes away from the dining experience. I like to smell the food! Also, wondering what they are covering up, never have I ever been in any type of restaurant where they feel a need to use a cover up in the air fragrance. My wife and I like ordering takeout on Friday nights. Tonight we tried El Rey for the first time. I submitted an online order using their website. I received a text and email confirmation of the order with a pickup time. I showed up 5 minutes after the designated pickup time and was told that they had no record of my order. They asked for proof of the order and I showed them the text and email. They then claimed their system was down and would have to cook the order while I wait. I watched a DoorDash guy get his order without issue. So I sat for 25 minutes past pickup time waiting for my food. Upon receiving the food I asked if they were going to do anything to accommodate me for the wasted time, and they told me no as they still made it for me instead of cancelling the order (a refund was never offered as an option or I would have likely taken it and not wasted my time). A free taco or even a churro would have probably led to me giving them another shot as a sign of good faith on their part. Sadly I will not be going back given the way this was handled. read more

Two of us went there for lunch and really enjoyed our meal. We ordered the combination platters. One of us ordered 3 beef tacos, white rice, and black beans. It looked like white rice with cilantro is a side on the menu, but I guess you just get plain white rice for the combo meal. I ordered the combo with 2 beef tacos, refried beans, and Mexican rice. That rice was excellent. It had a few vegetables in it too. The tacos came with beef and cilantro in the shells, and then on the side was lettuce, tomato, a little quac and sour cream. I like that I could add my own to my tacos. The calamari appetizer was okay, not great, but good. It had a bit of a smoky taste to it. Soon after sitting we received our drinks and salsa and chips, so it was nice we didn't have to wait long for that. The service was good. My only negative is that the server took our glasses away from the table for refills instead of bringing us fresh glasses or refilling by using a pitcher. Other than that sanitary issue, the place seems clean. It's your typical Mexican restaurant as far as decor. The music was kind of weird, very repetitive. It's a large place so would be good to visit with a group. We definitely plan to return when we are in the area again. read more

El Rey has excellent food and drinks and is a real authentic Mexican restaurant. We are very happy we found this place and have been recommending it to all my friends and family. The food is always perfectly seasoned and tasty. The food and bar menu is extensive with something for everyone. The staff are friendly and attentive. The El Rey margarita was perfect. My only complaint is that I didn't find this gem sooner. I have only one tiny issue. Tortillas should come with most meals or at least offered. I have been going to Mexican restaurants my entire life and never had to order them separately. Other than that, this place is a winner and I can't wait to go back. A new Mexican restaurant in town had to be tried out! The building is on a busy thoroughfare, no outdoor seating. Inside it's pleasant with a Mexican atmosphere created with brick walls and Mexican art. The complimentary appetizer, corn chips with salsa, was fresh, the chips still warm. We ordered a guacamole, which was fresh but a bit too much on the limey side and not spicy at all. They did bring chopped up chiles to remedy that when I asked for those. As one of the vegetarian dishes they have the vegetable fajitas. It comes with small flour tortillas, and was sizzling hot and fresh. A nice Mexican beer to accompany it made it complete. If the guacamole would have tasted better I would have given 5 stars. Service was good and friendly. read more

Been going here for years but never reviewed it. Lost touch with yelp during the pandemic. We'll it's a great place. The service has always been very good. Not only the server but the hostess busser and manager checks on you. Food has always been excellent and quick sometimes to quick. Ambiance is very relaxing. We tried the new Mexican restaurant by the mall and it was good but to bright and noisy. Too much commotion going on. Elrey is very laid back with soft music and very relaxing. They also have a great selection of margaritas and house margaritas are always 2 for 1. Check them out you won't regret it. read more

Heard a lot of chatter about this Mexican restaurant so we decided to try it on a Sunday evening. We were nicely greeted and seated at the door. The interior has retained some looks and colors of its previous steakhouse tenant with added south of the border decor and banda and norteña music piped in for ambiance. Drinks were offered immediately and a basket of commercial-- but complimentary --chips and okay salsa were delivered to the table promptly. The menu has a large selection and spans beyond normal Tex/Mex fare. In fact, I opted for the grilled tilapia with a light garlic sauce($20). The white fish was cooked perfectly and hidden under an accompaniment of onions, mushrooms and asparagus pieces that were all "char-melized" to a delicious flavor. A choice of two sides were offered and I chose the Spanish rice (a bit dry) and the sweet plantains (excellent). Guacamole,salsa and lettuce provided a cool addition to this hot plate. My wife ordered the chicken fajitas ($19) served sizzling in their skillet. The chicken was very tender and the peppers and onions in a mild tomato base were not overcooked. It was very tasty and served with a choice of sides. The service was efficient and attentive without hovering. All in all, El Rey was a very good choice and a great addition to the Vero Beach dining scene. read more

My wife wanted some Mexican food while we were away. I asked around and was directed to El Rey for good food. To start, the salsa is very bland, pretty much just tomatoes and little to no seasoning. Not what I was expecting. For dinner we ordered the chicken and steak fajitas for two. When presented, it was a large portion with plenty for two and some to take home. Again though, the fajitas were almost tasteless. Our server was efficient, but not very friendly, with hardly any dialogue. El Rey is a sizable place, but alas, we will not be back again. Ate there yesterday with my daughter. We both ordered the chicken enchilada combo mine with chicken taco and hers with a chicken tostada. Tostada was good and the taco was really nice. The enchiladas were not too great. They weren't really heated long enough and the sauce was just plain tomato sauce not enchilada sauce. I ate most of mine but my daughter left it in the plate. Service was really good and it's a nice atmosphere but they need to work on the enchiladas . They were very bland ,not heated long enough and the sauce was very wrong. Hope they fix it! read more

Went here today to give it a try. So glad I did. The Elotes Loco was unreal. Lots of corn, avacado and flavor overall. This was washed down with a Frozen Strawberry Margarita. The main lunch was the El Rey Super Burito. I had to take a pic as it was hugeeee!!! Had a Chile Rellano inside and I chose Birria as well. My only complaint....remove the Chile stem before phtting it in the burrito! It was massive, filled with rice, beans, meat and chile rellano. Covered and smothered with green verde and cheese sauces. I finished it!!! The menu was vast, had a ton of options so Im looking forward yo going back to try more. Table chips and salsa were refilled and the servers and staff were very attentive. That salsa which came with chips was a tad bland and needed a boost of flavor. The choripollo was delicious and the portion was massive though the dish was on the salty side. The side of Spanish rice and beans were decent at best, almost felt like an after thought. Service when I went was not the best and left much to be desired. Granted I did go on a Friday at 7:00 pm however, the restaurant appeared to be half full and our waitress was often pulled to other tables. I think she did the best she could but it could have been better but it could have been worse as well. The restaurant ambience was pleasant and had a nice decor to it. You definitely felt like you are at a Mexican restaurant when you eat there. Parking can be tricky but you are allowed to park at the bank across the street if their parking lot is full, according to their signs. read more

This was my first visit to El Rey since it opened recently. Easy to spot this bold orange building from the street. We received a friendly greeting upon arrival and seated without a wait, even with a large crowd on a weeknight. One draw might be the all-day, every-day happy hour which includes bo/go 12 oz draft beers. Other drinks are reasonably priced. The red Sangria is absolutely delicious. Also, happy to find a Mexican place in Vero Beach that offers endless salsa and chips with no upcharge. The salsa is quite tasty! Our server was very friendly, with a sweet disposition, and frequently checked back on us. I will agree with another Yelper, that the music was a bit on the loud side. Management should consider turning the volume down a notch so that folks can visit easier at the tables. We all ordered different entrees, and all of them were excellent. Everything had lots of flavor, was made fresh, and served hot straight out of the kitchen. We didn't know this ahead of time, but if you pay your bill in cash you can get a discount off your bill (of around 4%). Will definitely dine here again. read more

Almost didn't go inside this restaurant tonight as there were maybe two couples seated at 7:45 pm. We even walked back to our car but turned around and decided to give it a try. We now consider this absolutely the best Mexican restaurant in Vero Beach. We went inside and sat at the bar. Tito, bartender, was very friendly and described the menu as he poured us ice cold Modelo draft beers. The salsa he brought was excellent, not overly onion-y like some, and chips were fresh. We ordered guacamole, which was delivered quickly, and enchiladas verde and chili rellenos. The enchiladas came and were delicious, accompanied by rice and terrific refried beans. My husband let me taste his chili relleno and it was really yummy. We've made chili rellenos and they are not easy to make...these were really perfect. I was excited to try and like this new Mexican restaurant. The positives: The food was very fresh and authentic and plentiful. The chips and salsa were very good and each person got their own small dish of salsa. The server was somewhat attentive. We did not like the margaritas. It just did not taste right. The restaurant was very dark and the menu is very difficult to read. Also the music was extremely loud. After hearing all the hype for this place we decided to check it out for Taco Tuesday. What a disappointment. We ordered the "Elote Loco" as an appetizer. Literally brought us canned corn dumped onto a plate with some seasoning and cilantro on top. Was expecting corn on the cob. Then since it was Taco Tuesday we ordered the "Birria" tacos. As you can see in the picture, they're clearly not Birria and were honestly, the worst tacos we've ever had. We sent them back and had them removed from our bill. Also the service wasn't good, the waiter was not able to explain any of the menu items to us, and I'm still waiting for him to bring me my second drink. New Mexican spot in Vero Beach. Of course we had to try it out. We did not have high expectations due to just opening. We realize there are growing pains for any new spot. We went during their lunch (special) hours 11-3. And on Monday (margs for $5). We ordered chicken fajitas and "make your own plate" with 2 tacos & 1 burrito. Everything was great. Needed to add some salt to the salsa and the margarita was very sugary (I added a bit of water to the marg to thin out the sugar). But the food was great. They have a rather large menu with kids menu. Full bar. Happy hour as well. Definitely be a regular. read more
