Way overpriced small portions. the chicken chimichanga had this horrible nasty thick yellow cheese sauce on it. I've never had a chimichanga with yellow cheese on it before. And usually has the white cheese sauce .Got it as takeout and had to pay extra for chips and salsa. read more

My fajitas were terrible. The steak, onions and peppers were either terribly overcooked or burnt. Certainly not worth the $17.95 that they changed. My husband said that his beef burrito was just edible. I know we will never go back, once is enough. There are other Mexican restaurants, that have really good food, that you can go to. The atmosphere at this off the normal grid is great. Very lively and lots of music. I visited this restaurant early on a Sunday, so their lunch menu was not available. I had my service dog with me and was still greeted warmly. I ordered Shrimp Creama which is one of my favorites. Their version was a little mild for me. I added green Tabasco to liven the leftovers. The server was nice enough to give me extra rice and beans with my leftovers. Their menu is expansive and I was able to get non alcoholic beer which is wonderful with spicy food. I had high hopes from this restaurant. I totally LOVE places in locations like strip malls. They often have fantastic food. We were seated promptly. Not a lot of tables, but it was a Tuesday, so we had no problem getting a table. We were ah fed menus with pictures and an English and Spanish labels. Pretty cool. There were no prices on the menu which sent off mini warning lights in my head. However, it was a Mexican restaurant in a strip mall, how much could it be. We decided to get the large sampler appetizer platter and Fajitas. The platter was delicious except for the four mozzarella cheese sticks with marinara sauce. Really odd inclusion, everything else on the platter was delicious. We took the cheese sticks home to my kid, because, well, that is cheesy kid food. The fajitas came in a sizzling plate. Everything seemed hot and fresh. They gave us flour and corn tortillas, on request. The flavor was good. Small amount of lettuce and tomatoes and with rice and beans. No guacamole and no sour cream. But, that is okay. There were also no complimentary chips and salsa, but I could deal with that. However, the sampler platter was $17 which seemed exorbitant for what it was. The fajitas were $20. Owned by a wife and husband team hailing from Mexico and Puerto Rico respectively, la Taberna has made the right choice in opting to serve Mexican food. The menu is varied, with a kind of "middle Mexico" menu with dishes from various regions. The service wasn't very good and it looked like our server was in training--there were only three tables with people and she was really struggling. The food, on the other hand, was pretty good, and authentic. I loved all the Spanish spelling errors on the menu--they remind me of home. ;) - Guacamole 2/5. Price! They should be charging $5 for this, not $9. - Michelada 3/5. The beer cocktail of champions. - Sopes (beef). 3/5. Not a whole lot of flavor. - Flautas (chicken). 4/5. Really big for flautas, but light and delicious. - Adobo de puero. 4/5. Nice spice. I hope the red was from chiles and achiote and not food coloring. ;) - Service 1.5/5 Normally, I'd rate them a 3/5, but because the food is authentic, they get an extra point. Still on my quest to find outstanding authentic Mexican food in the Vero Beach area. Not sure there is such a thing here (Outstanding), but La Taberna is worth a try. Made up my own plate as I wanted to try a little of everything. Had the carne asada taco. Little dry, but a decent taco. Ground beef enchilada was OK, just a typical run of the mill enchilada. Was happy to find sope's on the menu. When I asked if they use cabbage or lettuce, the waitress said cabbage. I was elated to say the least! (This is just one of my personal hangups. Lettuce wilts so quick on hot sope's. Cabbage is the way to go. Might just be a Southern California thang, not sure.) Went with the carne asada sope'. After ordering the waitress came back and said they were out of cabbage. Looking at the Yelp pictures, I'm not so sure it isn't just lettuce. Sope' was good, but would be better with cabbage. I will go back and we'll see if indeed cabbage is used, that would increase their star rating to a "Yay, I'm a fan". La Taberna is nothing over the top great, but it was a pleasant surprise here in Vero Beach. Staff was super friendly, place seemed clean and well kept for the dining area. Quick, easy, decent service with prices just a tad above what I'd expect. A little strip-mall joint off Highway 1 that's worth visiting. read more

The "homemade" tortillas were thick and fell apart. The salsa was yummy, at least, and the waitress from El Salvador was nice. I used to be able to go in there, get speedy and competent service, and order a small side order of guacamole to go with my chips and salsa, along with a meal. Now they want to charge me $8.99 for a large bowl of guacamole or they refuse to give me any guacamole at all. I wouldn't mind paying up to four dollars for a ramekin of guacamole. I don't expect it to be free. I know avocados are expensive. Waitstaff turnover seems to be so high that there is always a new waitress serving customers. Maybe that is why I can't get a small side order of guacamole anymore, because the new waitress doesn't know I'm a generous tipper. I really like this restaurant. Very casual and the prices were very reasonable. They have a huge selection and the portions are large. Everything that I have tried has been delishes. The customer service has been exceptional. It has a small bar and plenty of TV's. I was happy to stumble upon this place. The restaurant is by no means fancy and that what I love about it.
