My sister & I chose to eat here while out running errands the day after Thanksgiving. It was a pleasant surprise post Thanksgiving meals! NO TURKEY & STUFFING IN SIGHT! We were immediately seated in what seemed like the 'back 40!' It was extra quiet back there, tho and we both actually appreciated that. We were dealing with the aftermath of a funeral at home and needed a little escape! Our waiter, Angel, was extremely patient with us! Like two teenagers that hadn't seen each other in months.... We just kept getting side tracked talking about everything else other than the menu. Once we finally decided on and placed our order, it was made lightening fast and was in front of us in two-three minutes. I visited El Sombrero while in Vicksburg. The staff was extremely friendly and the bartender was great. The bartender was nice and attentive, and brought everything out quickly. Right after arriving he brought chips and salsa, and I ordered a margarita. It was okay, but didn't taste fresh or anything, more like a mix. For dinner I ordered the enchiladas verdes, which were good. The bar top was kept very clean, which I always like to see. The outside of the building is cool, and inside there is lots of seating at both tables and the bar. I wasn't expecting smoking to be allowed inside not being from the area, so that surprised me a bit. I don't personally like the smell and is something you might want to be aware of if you feel strongly about this. read more

Was traveling for work and this was in front of the hotel. Was told by the clerk at the hotel this was great food and it did not disappoint. Only weird thing was smoking was allowed in the restaurant. This caught me off guard but luckily was only in the front of the restaurant. Chips and salsa was fresh and full bar was offered. Prices were super reasonable and had dessert offerings as well. Was work night only had water but the drinks were flowing at the other tables! We were heading down the interstate to our hotel on the hill for the night. What do our hungry eyes see next door? This delightful restaurant! Walking down and over to it meant we could not drink too much as it is hard to roll up hill. But since were didn't have to drive here... The place was packed with locals and all were having a great time as we walked in. Cleanliness was very evident and this place looked new! Lots of eye candy décor everywhere. Lots or gorgeous tile work! Lots of friendly people everywhere. Lots of great looking dishes being carried out of the kitchen! It was late and spicy food is not my friend at night so I ordered a beef and chicken chimichanga. Excellent choice! Not greasy, full of flavor and almost spice free for my tender tongue! The meat was tender, it was huge and the crust was PERFECT! The frozen Mango Margarita was incredibly good. Truly delectable! The price was surprising cheap for quality, service and atmosphere! I feel sorry for people who think this is good Mexican. The outside of the restaurant is really cool which is why we stopped on our way through town. This place is disgusting once you get inside. You can smoke at the bar. I haven't seen smoking in a restaurant in 20+ years. What the actual f. The bathroom has offensive graffiti writing all over the stalls. The food is atrocious and frankly laughable how bad it was. We ordered fajitas and beef burrito for the adults. The ground beef in the burrito was literally ground beef. With no seasoning, no Mexican flair, nothing. They literally put raw beef in a frying pan. Cooked it until it was gray. Toss in burrito. The fajitas were the same, not even salt. The kids food was hilarious. They have pizza that looks like it came from Schwan and they tossed it in the microwave. The French fries were literally white. Like it looked like a frozen fry that was never cooked. $100 later and I couldn't wait to come and write this. The thing I couldn't understand is how this place was so crowded. We had Chile relleno and cheese enchiladas the cheese was velvita cheese it melted like a sticky gooey paste . Unfortunately it's a beautiful restaurant with great service chips and salsa is great! I used to be a fan of El Sombrero. I love their quesadillas. Still do. I was in Vicksburg for the weekend and my cousin and I decided to eat here. We were starving and wanted a nice sit in dinner. Until this weekend, I had NEVER EVER had a complaint about this location, never sent a plate back (I wouldn't dare) and their customer service has never been bad. Well, that changed. My food was great but the customer service was sub-par. My cousin, unfortunately, had a bad experience. She usually sticks with the same few dishes but wanted to try something different this time. When her food came out and she cut into it, I noticed how dry it looked, but didn't say anything. There was barely any cheese and the beef looked stale. She finally took a bite and said "Its so dry! I thought there would be more cheese. This is horrible." I replied and said "It looks gross and why is it so dry?". . .during this time out waiter didn't come to check on us AT ALL. We needed drinks and a refill on salsa, didn't receive it. Once we were done my cousin decided to tell the waiter about her experience and then I asked for a manager. Enrique, who is a manager, is very rude and spoke to us like we did something wrong. I wish I had gotten it on camera. I know customer service is challenging but in his case, he didn't care. My cousin asked him two questions "Did you guys get a new cook? Why is the beef so dry this time?" He replied "You should have told your waiter what you wanted! You had a choice to choose something different. I see you ate most of it!" His tone was so rude and demeaning that I had to jump in and say something. Headed back from a trip to Florida and stopped in Vicksburg for a quick bite to eat (3:30pm). Chose this place because it had the highest star rating (albeit not very high). Placed a very simple order. Two quesadillas, one enchilada and a burrito dinner. Our order took 41 minutes to deliver. Not once did the waitress come back over to refill drinks or chips and salsa. I got up and asked her to please check on our food and she said "sure"....and then got back on her phone doing whatever she was doing. When the food came she said sorry for the wait, the kitchen was backed up. There were 3 tables! Food came out and my wife's dinner was wrong but we were so done and ready to go. Food was "ok". Overcharged us on just about everything we ordered. After asking about our bill, they said they didn't do the lunch specials on Sundays but it doesn't say that on the menu. The food is good, but what makes this place so successful is the atmosphere. It is a great looking restaurant inside and out and they always have sports on all the TVs around the bar (never any news "Thank Goodness!"). Oh......order the Shrimp cocktail. Searched for an open dine-in restaurant early in the pandemic and this was the place. We were looking for tasty food and drinks. Nailed it! Beautiful establishment with amazing features. The food was authentic Mexican Food and delicious. The way the the table and menus were cleaned made me uneasy about it because they were wet :/ but it all went away as soon as we got our drinks and food. I disliked this restaurant was my first experience to a open to smoke/in establishment, that was quite awful. Absolutely terrible! But it is not the establishment's fault rather the local government measures. (sadly they are back in the 90s sadly yet comical) if I was to ever be in the area again I would totally visit again. read more

Everything was delicious. My only complaint is that the guacamole was purée & needed more chunks of avocado , and needed season. Plus lime juice. The combo fajitas fed me and my mom, just ordered an extra pack of tortilla. The sangria margarita was yummy. This place is often crowded but has a lively, energetic atmosphere with fairly fast service. The crowd trends younger and there is a full bar. We were part of a larger group and have been here several times with them. The food has always been of high quality and the wait staff friendly and attentive. (Felicia even made her own homemade Guacamole especially for us)! The menu is very large, but still has all your traditional entrees listed. Vicksburg, MS isn't exactly a culinary Mecca, but this place could hold its own in a big city. That makes it one of the best in this little town. read more
