We were passing through Vicksburg and read about this cafe on Yelp, so we decided to try it. I had intentions of ordering the roast beef poboy, but they didn't have roast beef that day. So, we both ordered the hamburger poboys, which included their "signature" salad. Wow, the salads alone are worth going back for! Brunch at the Main Street Market. A quaint little cafe in on old house. We were greeted immediately by the owner and seated by the electric fireplace which quickly became too warm. The owner graciously turned off the fireplace as soon as we mentioned it was too warm. A waitress took our drink order, we both got unsweetened tea. When she came back with our tea we still needed more time to decide what to order. After a few minutes the owner came over to our table and took our order. Mary ordered cream of asparagus soup the quiche and the house salad with fresh fruit and a ginger dressing. I opted for the grilled chicken sandwich that came with a side salad and a cup of chicken and andouille gumbo. As customers came and went you could tell many of them were regulars by their interactions with the owner and employees. This is a warm and welcoming little restaurant. There's also outdoor seating on the back patio but it was too chilly and windy on this day. Our food was served and had a nice presentation. Mary thoroughly enjoyed her quiche and we both enjoyed the salad. The fresh berries and pineapple was a nice addition and the ginger dressing very tasty. My gumbo was tasty with an ample amount of tender chicken and sausage and not too much rice. The chicken sandwich was well prepared although after the soup and salad I wasn't able to finish the sandwich. If we're ever back in town we will definitely revisit this little gem for lunch. read more

Driving through Vicksburg and found this place through Yelp. It was the perfect lunch place, homemade food in a charming atmosphere. My companion had the special of the day which was shrimp ratatouille with grits which was very good, flavorful and light. I had the asparagus quiche with salad and soup. I enjoyed it all and how fresh, simple and housemate it was. I don't normally have dessert with lunch but couldn't resist the chocolate pecan pie - sooo worth it and piled high with real whipped cream. A truly lovely, nourishing lunch. First visit back to Main Street since the beginning of the pandemic, and Lordy, did it feel great to be in that space again with Sally and Chris and family. This is where you can see everyone you know in Vicksburg because the food is consistently delicious and there is such a hometown feel to the place. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu: lunch only, sandwiches, salads, a daily special, a soup or gumbo, and a quiche of the day. In our group, 2 had the asparagus quiche, 1 had the chicken and pasta special, 1 had the blackened chicken salad with fruit, and 1 had the tilapia Caesar salad. Everything was perfectly prepared and tasty, including the accompanying Italian veggie soup and chicken/sausage gumbo. Service is fast, pleasant, and efficient. Tab was about $75 for 5 before tip. No alcohol is served, but I believe you are still able to byob, but call to check if this matters to you. read more

We lucked out finding this place in the historic district of Vicksburg, when searching for a locally-owned restaurant with character. The owner of Main Street Market Cafe is an authentic Cajun Creole cook and uses fresh and healthy ingredients to create his Southern Creole dishes. Both my husband and I had the gumbo, which comes with a fresh salad of romaine lettuce and sliced fruit and freshly baked miniature muffins. All were excellent. The menu changes seasonally. I'm sitting at a freshly dress table with a crisp cotton tablecloth, and a super friendly elderly woman comes up and chitchats with my two sons. "Young man, are you behaving yourself and do you like the food?" This is the type of charm that just speaks straight to my heart, this woman was the owner's mother, the owner being a wonderfully talented strong woman. "My mother just comes over here for lunch every day. then she shuffles back home" Onto the food, as you can see by the multiple pictures that I have posted, the food is fresh, delicious, generous and served with care. My water glass refilled every time it was half empty. The service was such that I felt I was in my own relatives dining room. The decoration, enough to calm down the rowdy kids and impress any visitor who would come this way. The only negative was that my friend opted for the broccoli soup instead of the salad, and they came back to the table after a few minutes and said they were out of the soup. She did not want the other option of tortilla soup, so was a bit disappointed. This is probably about the only place I would want to eat in Vicksburg, it seems to have a monopoly on fresh food, good service, and perfect oh perfect atmosphere. read more

I think once I get to around 200 reviews, I'd like to go back and somehow figure out a top 5 or a top 10..I can't imagine this place wouldn't be in contention for one of the top spots. Located in downtown Vickburg, MS, it's an amazing find. It's basically inside a little house and looks like something from an old movie. You can already tell it's going to be something special when you sit down. I was already glad we stopped by Mississippi on the drive to Georgia, but the day was just getting better. This is an authentic Southern Creole place and you can taste it in every bite. Amazing service by what I am assuming are the owners. I ordered the gumbo first and then the lunch special, which was the Crawfish Etouffee. The gumbo was the best I've ever had and it wasn't even close. Perfectly cooked rice and sausage and deep amazing flavor. Just the right amount of heat, served in a little clay pot..I mean, I pretty much wanted to order a gigantic pot of this and just eat it all day. It was downright magical. Served with little biscuits, which me and my friend pretty much fought over. Then the entrée came. The sauce was so luscious and smooth and silky and great flavor crawfish, another amazing dish. Of course after that meal, I needed coffee and dessert. Optioned for the lemon chess pie. It was really moist, the whip cream on it also was excellent. Overall, I would say it was definitely one of the best meals I've ever had. I also loved my time in Vicksburg, and I am very sure I'll be back at some point. I don't think this place does any advertising, because I asked a few locals and they didn't know about it. So, if live in Vicksburg or if you are just passing by, stop by this place. This is a quiet little neighborhood cafe with a lot of Southern charm. The food is good but not superb. We had the blackened tuna with mango avocado salsa and scalloped potatoes. Unfortunately, the food on the dinner menu is grossly overpriced. The portions are small. Although plenty for a meal, nothing here to justify the $25.50 entree price tag. The tuna came pre-sliced and was a bit dry even though we ordered it rare. It was not hot from the grill. And we were the first two people in the restaurant for the evening. The service was equally mediocre. While very friendly and polite, our server was not especially attentive. We had to request napkins. My husband's coke was poured hot from the can into his glass, for an extra $2, with the can left at the table. Also the bathroom was not clean, and at the beginning of the evening, the trash can was overflowing, and the toilet paper roll was empty. I retrieved an extra roll from the edge of the sink. I think I could have overlooked all of the above and given 4-5 stars if the prices had been more appropriate. But for a $70 meal for two without ordering any adult beverages, or dessert, this was something of a disappointment. Perhaps lunch would have been more satisfying. read more

Being from Vicksburg, I've wanted to try this place out for awhile. I finally made it down there and the food was good. I had the bacon cheesburger on ciabatta bread and it was great. The pickles were sweet and I love those over dill. I also had the gumbo that was ok. My only complaint is that I asked for sweet tea, and I got sweet tea only it was some kind of mint sweet tea. Now being from the South, when I ask for sweet tea I want straight sweet tea.. nothing fancy.. the mint tea wasn't that bad.. it just wasn't my cup of tea... Overall, it was a nice atmosphere with friendly staff, fast service and the food was good. I would recommend visiting. read more

My first stop in Vicksburg was lunch here. I got the shrimp pita to go and a large sweet tea as well. I was able to sit outside, drink my sweet tea, and enjoy the sunshine while it was being made. When my food arrived to me, my sweet tea was also topped off. I thoroughly enjoyed the sandwich and drink. I took off one star because upon entering, it was a bit confusing as to how to get service. It wasn't clear if it was seat yourself, or wait at the desk that was set back in the dining room. Everything else was good down-home Southern hospitality. Free parking in the lot or street. read more
