Another hidden gem in Rochester and Minnesota. Mexican Grocery El Gallo is about a 5-7 minute drive from the hospital area and is hole-in-a-wall restaurant located inside of a grocery store. The menu was very authentic looking despite not knowing ~75% of the items were. You are free to grab drinks or other food inside the grocery store too as you will pay all of it together at the counter in the end. I got the coconut aloe juice which was not too tasty but refreshing when complemented with the tacos. Ordered - Tacos: chicken, beef, lamb, tongue variety platter (5/5). This was so yummy. The portions were large for $8.99 and it came with a large green pepper and onions. In addition, I got some Mexican-packaged Flaming Hot Cheetos and Bonitas for my brother for the road. It was a little pricey but I'll consider it a souvenir from the store. Looking forward to returning next time to try other dishes and experience more of Mexican flavors! read more

We were looking for ingredients for a recipe and knew we'd have good luck here. We planned our arrival around lunch time in the hopes of getting a meal too. The store is full of grocery items and variety that can't be found easily elsewhere in Rochester (masarepa and Goya seasonings) as well as fresh pastries. We wanted to stay in the dining area but unfortunately no high chair for the kiddo. I got pastor sopes to go and my partner a chicken burrito. Everything was delicious and portions are generous. The menu is in Spanish and I would suggest looking beforehand or googling on the spot if you're not as familiar just to get a sense of the variety. We will be back! read more

I've only had good experiences here! This is a grocery store, but it also houses a little restaurant! There are a lot of options on the menu from soups to quesadillas to tacos (and more). The tacos also have a variety of meat choices as well. Having come from southern California, where Mexican taco trucks run galore, I think the tacos here are pretty good. The portions are well-sized, and I like that I can get just get a set of tacos without additional sides. Would eat again! read more

Hole in the wall - can be found in the back corner of the market. Taco plates come with 4 tacos at $7.99 a plate. Great salsa! It's hard to please my salsa addiction but theirs was great. Their tortilla was also cooked to a crisp which I thoroughly enjoyed. I'm glad I found this and will definitely be back when visiting Rochester. Staff speak barely any English, menu in Spanish but you can probably catch the drift and they'll understand English. Luckily, I learned Spanish for a whole decade. I love this place. They have great stuff made in house. I like their chorizo best for cooking. Don't be scared to ask a question at the deli counter. They usually have somebody working in the back if you have trouble speaking Spanish. There queso fresco is much better than the stuff at the regular grocery store. Lots of stuff to try. Went here for a quick bite to eat on a first date, wow ... I said chicken something and my date ordered me tacos. They were indeed authentic and not Americanized. Not your Taco Bell by any means. And the portion was not over the top. First place I've had that used white beans for the refried beans, yummy too. Definitely will keep this place in mind when I'm out and about. This is an awesome little market. The food served at the grill inside is great. If you are looking for Mexican food that is more authentic than the normal fare, this is the place to go.
