This place is great. Located inside of Marcus Market on Second St. just south of Wayne State's campus. I got the pastor (spicy pork) burrito with rice and beans. The burrito was great, the pork was very juicy and flavorful. Not really spicy, but I have a good spice tolerance so might be spicy for others. The beans were thin rather than a thick refried beans and tasty. The rice was bland. It also comes with a roasted jalapeño, grilled onion, and lime wedge. Service was fast and staff friendly. Will be frequenting here often since this is the only real Mexican within walking distance of campus. read more

Shrimp tacos and vegan tacos are where it's at over here! The grilled a veggie are so delicious that go with the tacos, and even after having order too many and eating one much later it was still warm because of the way it was wrapped hours later. El Taco Veloz is much better than Alley Taco, which once occupied the same space next to Juice Joint in the back of the venerable Marcus Market. Everybody says it's better. The ingredients taste fresher, portions are bigger, you get a big jalapeno with most everything and it's just more authentic. I knew I needed to give ETV a better ranking than AT, and I figured 4 stars would be sufficient. I work two jobs, one across the street and one down the block from El Taco Veloz and I do recommend it, but sometimes I just get burned out on it. This might be more of a thing with Mexican food in general, but I can only eat so much of it. Like, Thai or sushi I could eat every single day til I die. But there's enough days where I don't feel like El Taco Veloz to keep me from vaulting it into the vaunted five star range. Well, I was stunned to see I once gave Alley Taco four stars as well. I was thinking I should write an update dropping AT from the three I thought I gave it down to two. Midtown still has virtually nothing in the way of Mexican food so I think the desire for something not found in this neighborhood made me overestimate it. That, and they just seemed to be more on their A game in the beginning. (The health department closed down El Taco Veloz for a brief time when they first opened up and word was it was on account of the state Alley Taco left things in!) Alley Taco has new digs over on Willis now. I haven't been inside there, nor do I plan on it. If you don't trust me, just ask around. Word of mouth is strongly in favor of El Taco Veloz and against Alley Taco. Tuesdays are $1.50 taco days and the place is banging at lunch and in the early evening. I try to come in around 9 as the crowd has usually dissipated but it's not close enough to closing for me to be a pain in the ass. On other days I usually get chorizo quesadillas, though I sometimes switch it up. I usually like red salsa, but here the green is really good. They give you a nice big cup of it, too, even if you don't order chips. The TV is usually showing soccer or Pixar movies. And you can always grab snacks and beverages from Marcus to go with your meal. If we're not in the midst of brutal winter conditions like right now, you can eat out front on the patio. Sometimes the sequel is actually better than the original. Empire Strikes Back is better than the original Star Wars, The Road Warrior is superior to Mad Max and El Taco Veloz crushes Alley Taco. read more

This is a hidden treasure in the middle of Midtown. I've been here about 5 times now, and have to say that this place is great. All of the ingredients are incredibly fresh, and the orders don't take more than a couple of minutes. Go for the shrimp burrito, or the pork for your main. Enjoy the spicy grilled jalapeños and onions that come with your tacos as well. I also love that you can get anything in a salad format as well. El Taco Veloz is my go-to taco joint when I make a pit stop at Marcus Market. Their customer service is wonderful and the prices are very reasonable. The street-style tacos here hit the spot when you need to grab a quick bite for the road. The meats are always tender and juicy, while the tortilla is still hot from the grill. For me, the most important part is they don't overdo the onions and cilantro! When you bite into a taco, you get a proper balance of meats, tortilla, and veggies. I also love how they include the sauces on the side and even some greens to complement your meal. My faves include Al Pastor, Chorizo, and any of their Quesdaillas (SO CHEESY AND SCRUMPTIOUS!!). The food is good but my gripe is with the service. Two days in a row I've called to place an order for carry-out only to be placed on hold for over 15 minutes before I gave up and called somewhere else. Unfortunately I'm too busy to come in during lunch rush, order, and wait around for 15 to 20 minutes for my food. I'm also too busy to be on hold for that long just to place an order. I'll probably give it one more shot but if the same thing happens I guess I'll have to say goodby to those tasty burritos. Terrible Customer Service today around 12:30 pm. I walk up to the counter the Young Hispanic man just stares at Me as if he waiting on me to Greet him and ask for his Order!! I ask about a few items I see on the Board and he tells me to look at the Menu and gestures towards a stack of menus. I ask for 3 chicken tacos. He ask Mild or Hot?, I say mild. I ask for Sour cream. Only this time i had some young girl give me crap because she forgot to give me a side of sour cream. She challenged me over a fifty cent side of sour cream.
