Vecino transport you to an amazing restaurant that should be in the center of Mexico City, but it's tucked away and Detroit's very own midtown. Make sure you make reservations, you're gonna need them. The vibes inside are beautiful, it's dark with some great earthy decor as their ambience. They have a gorgeous bar that you can glance at, and get very excited because their drinks are divine. The weight staff is super friendly, very efficient and very attentive. We started with the Agua Chile - kind of a funner take on your standard ceviche with some gorgeous shrimp and that sauce is drinkable. Esquites were extra fun with asparagus and corn, so it gave some extra dimension to the vegetable bites and different textures as we kind of bid into it and as you can see in the picture just covered in cheese extremely good. I have to say the Tetela was one of my favorite bites, just the attention to detail on the brazing of the carrot with the lovely tortilla/masa combination, truly worth it. We also got the fish with the two different salsas and that was such a divine bite and it made it more exciting that you were essentially getting a two and one. The fish was extremely flaky, but with a stunning grilled to it. Overall amazing. The deserts were both delicious but I would go back for the Pan De Elote everytime... I mean this is how corn should be spotlighted and celebrated. It was a gorgeous meal, with flavors that make my tastebuds dance with every bite. Vecino is here to stay! read more

Fun, new, very hip and trendy spot! It was super loud and had a ton of mood lighting as the evening went on, but it was hard for my friends and I to actually engage in conversation given the volume of chatter and music and just overall environment in the restaurant, which was noticeably a struggle! I felt a little out of place being here given just how trendy and super party-like atmosphere it all was haha! And in the months since I've come here, it remains a super popular spot to go to if you're looking for that extremely lively atmosphere! None of this takes away from the quality of their delicious food! We had incredible dishes and they clearly take a lot of pride in sourcing intentionally all their ingredients for their food, and the waitstaff did their best to intro us to everything, despite how overstimulatingly loud the environment was, so I only came away from each presentation with about half the information they wanted to convey. But all in all, the food was good across the board, and we tried a ton of different dishes. There weren't any that were overwhelming showstoppers that made me want to come back here again and again to try the rest of the menu though, so I left Vecino knowing that I wasn't going to return anytime soon. We had such an amazing night at Vecino! We had a special guest visiting from out of town and we wanted to show off the city! It was the most perfect evening so we decided to sit out on the patio for dinner. The menu is organized into tapas style courses. We started with the guacamole and salsa trio, then followed with a variety of unique dishes. My favorites were the Carnitas and Asada. We love the fresh pop of flavors in every bite! We ended up ordering quite a few rounds of cocktails and tequilas. I loved the hibiscus margarita! The overall vibe is dark & moody with candles illuminating the entire space! Tried Vecino yesterday, having heard the considerable buzz that seems to be surrounding this place. Our experience went a long way toward justifying the hubbub. To start, the ambiance: seating is limited, (indoors - there is a patio, but the weather will need to cooperate.). We had patio reservations, and became concerned when - as frequently happens in our Michigan - dark clouds began to threaten storms. Luckily, when this Yelper entered and while the co-diner searched for a parking spot, the establishment managed to find us a nice, interior table. Problem solved. One cautionary note: expect problems finding a parking spot (no lots nearby), so plan accordingly. Another word to the wise: make your reservation well in advance, to be sure you get in. Service was very attentive, and our server made sure we were well taken care of. Now, the food. If you came to Vecino expecting the usual Tex-Mex fare of tacos, tortillas and enchiladas, you may be disappointed. However, if you brought your sense of adventure with you, that will be rewarded. We shared most dishes, to compensate for the rather high prices. Here as well, there were unlooked-for rewards. We started with the Sikil Pak, which consisted of a pumpkin spread, augmented with pumpkin seeds and chiles, with raw vegetables for dipping in the spread. As we' were running out of veggies while there was still some pumpkin spread remaining, the waiter offered to bring us some tortilla chips, which we gladly accepted. The chips were regular corn tortillas, with some blue tortilla mixed in. Nice. Next, we shared a cauliflower-mushroom dish in a white sauce that was not overwhelming - just perfectly matched with the vegetables. Unusual, and very nice. For our main, we shared a half chicken, with a black mole sauce. Very well prepared. By this time, even though we were sharing every course, we were starting to feel pretty full. So much so, that we couldn't even consider dessert. The next table over seemed to be getting a white chocolate mousse, which looked mighty yummy. Maybe next time. All in all, a great addition to Michigan's Mexican dining scene. read more

However, I hope this means though that their team is paid well and that they have a sustainable model as I'd love to see them thrive! Onto our meal experience: We made rezzies via RESY, which was seamless and quick. Street parking was pretty easy. Upon arrival, we were seated promptly and it was fairly empty at 4:30pm but pretty packed when we were leaving, so make a reservation! Our server was fantastic - so knowledgeable and friendly! We started with their fantastic cocktails - I loved my Tomatini (blanco, cocchi, tomatillo, thyme, bay leaft, tomolive, chilo oil). It was like a spicy tomatillo marg! Delish. For food, we had: *Totopos & Salsas - this in itself cost $14 which is kind of wild BUT Vecino has their own masa program which was great to try some interesting heirloom varieties. Also, there was definitely no pico de gallo up in here. The salsa trio was salsa macha, salsa cascabel and salsa cruda. All were stunning! We took them home with us! *CHICHARRONES DE PULPO: perfectly cooked so the octopus was tender and had a wonderful texture. It was kind of breaded-ish and there was a puree and potatoes. Just a wonderful dish in general! *TUNA TOSTADA (tuna, chipotle aioli, leeks, avocado) - flavors were GREAT on this. The tuna was fresh - no hint of fishiness at all. It's a pretty small portion so I could probably eat it myself BUT we just cut it in half and split it between the 2 of us. *DUCK ENCHILADAS - let me preface that I'm not usually an enchiladas gal. BUT when they make the corn tortillas in house, it's so dang good. This was flavorful but again pretty small portion (just 2 enchiladas). Beautiful plating though. *BUÑUELO (Oaxacan corn chocolate, mint basil ice cream) - our server recommended this one and she didn't lead us astray! Heard about this restaurant and I was excited to try it. Very intimate and cozy dining setting. Good for date night or small group. I would describe it as an upscale Mexican restaurant. They offer different items on the menu than your usual Mexican restaurant. I appreciated our server explaining the menu to us and having the patience to go through it all because it was our first time there. She was even helpful enough to provide an extra menu of items that were safer for us to eat since a few of us at the table had food, allergies. Overall 10 out of a 10 experience beautiful interior. The price was on the pricer side for the portion but it was well made so I am not going to complain. Honestly, the chips and dips were our fave. The chips were homemade and had so much crunch. To preface... as someone who grew up in Mexico, vecino hits like food from home every time. I have been six times now and not once have I been disappointed. I have been trying Mexican restaurants all over the U.S. and no where compares to vecino and to think I found my favorite in Detroit amazes me. It truly is worth every penny. For what to order: All their appetizers are great. We usually switch it up and are satisfied with each one that we've ordered. The Totopos with salsa are a must and their guac is great as well. For mains- the asada del día is our go to. It is always cooked to perfection and comes with fresh tortillas. And it is hard for me to come by a tortilla in the U.S. that I enjoy. But here, they are excellent. They import their corn from Mexico and you can tell. This is served with bone marrow and some garlic onion spread that goes great on the taco. For dessert- their tres leches is amazing. The coconut cream pairs so well with the cake. I could eat like 10 of them. As if it's not obvious at this point vecino is my favorite restaurant in Detroit and one of my tops in the world. Highly recommend making a reservation. Very dim lighting and I found the atmosphere rather loud. Make sure you have a light for your table. The menu was a tad bit hard to see without the lamp. Maybe my expectations were too high based on feedback I had received from other people that had been there but I was wasn't impressed, especially since it's on the costlier side. Nothing was bad. It just wasn't very memorable and I don't think the cost justifies the experience. The restaurant itself is cute and cozy, definitely giving date night vibes and the bathroom were cute as well. Parking was also a hassle since there isn't a dedicated lot or place to park. It's a really busy area and you have to fend for yourself with street parking. I definitely had to drive around for several rounds before I found someone coming out and could snag a spot a couple of blocks away. This was my favorite new restaurant of 2025 in Detroit (I think also Restaurant of the Year, if I'm not mistaken). It's got an amazing interior and ambiance, incredible service, and the food is inspired and innovative. It's halal friendly, which is an added bonus. It's definitely meant for sharing, so I would recommend coming with a small group of friends to order a bunch of menu items. We ordered across the menu and shared everything as a group of 4 people. Came here for a birthday dinner and had a really excellent time. We got the salsas to start and let me say the chips are truly delicious. The peanut oil salsa, while it may sound weird, is incredibly flavorful and we could not stop eating this. We went with the lamb shank masa, the duck enchiladas, and then the half chicken as our entree dish to share. Everything was wildly flavorful and delicious. Service was really great. Cocktails were a little lacking for us in flavor (Cantarito for me), but the food was stellar. Will have to come back and try more of the offerings! read more

We've been twice now (after our first time, we booked to come back two weeks later so we could try more dishes) and Vecino is sooo good! Drinks are super interesting (I really love the "spicy margarita" which is called Picosa Verde), the El Clásico was pretty good but tasted too lime-y. You can order food at the bar also so it's an option if it's all booked up! The first time we went, we had the Sikil Pak which was only okay, it was a complex flavored dip maybe too salty (& they don't give you enough crudite) but they are happy to pack any leftovers, Tuna Tostada= delicious and the Fish=a favorite! So delicious! It's market price so yes, it can be $$$$ but you can't find anything in Michigan like it! I love Vecino! Service is excellent and the ambiance is great! Visited this restaurant over the weekend with some friends and it was such a wonderful dinning experience. The restaurant is beautiful inside with cool vibes and great lighting and comfortable seating throughout. It was a last minute decision to do dinner here the restaurant was very accommodating getting us in for a last min reservation. The menu was definitely not what you would expect from a Mexican restaurant and was intimidating on what to order. We were very lucky to have a server who had excellent insight on the menu items and guided us in the right direction. The food was excellent but I would say for the price the portion size of some of the items was disappointing. I would go again but with the knowledge of exactly what to order. The fish and seafood dishes were the stars of the show. The muscles, the tuna tart and the snapper are well worth the visit. This is a beautiful restaurant with a great vibe. I especially appreciate the curtained vestibule to keep the cold out. A very cozy touch. The service was absolutely phenomenal - they take your coat when you arrive and hang it up for you, the seating is very comfy, the lighting and candles are really pretty, and our server was excellent. She described menu items knowledgeably and confidently recommended great cocktails and dishes. They've got the details right here, down to the exceptional water glasses. To drink, I ordered one of their non alcoholic options, and I'm so glad they have many selections to choose from. Our server was great at explaining the flavors of several to us, and I went with the phony negroni which is a sweet, red, pretty cocktail that is prepackaged. My friend ordered one of their regular cocktails, just without alcohol, and she loved it. It was made with lots of fresh citrus juice, a house made Squirt, and a spicy gummy candy stick. A very fun cocktail I will get next time. As for food, we shared the octopus dish, 2 of us ordered the duck enchiladas, and one of us ordered the talyuda with chorizo. Our favorites were definitely the enchiladas, the chorizo on the talyuda was amazing, and the octopus was cooked very well - it was tender - and we really liked the pineapple, but it needed a little salt and the spice rub was a little on the bitter side. A beautiful dish, but I think I'd try the venduras en mole next time. Overall, a good meal; the masa is the star of the show here, especially in the enchiladas. The corn has the most amazing flavor that really shines just as much as all the other delicious ingredients with it. The tomatillo sauce was absolutely delicious - smooth, almost creamy; so tangy and well-seasoned. I'd definitely return just for those enchiladas. The chorizo was also memorable - it had such a great texture and flavor. Overall, the menu is a bit sparse, but everything on it sounds interesting. The prices are also fairly high, even for downtown, but the flavors are elevated, the plating is beautiful, and the service is top-notch. The Tuna Tostada was my favorite item and I'm not above saying I wish I didn't split it with my sister. We ordered the larger serving of fish to share ($93) and it was perfectly prepared. The ambience was perfect but for the life of me- I don't understand a bathroom too sexy for lights that won't allow you to check if you have food in your teeth. Creative adult beverages and non alcoholic libations to accompany our meal or to enjoy all on their own. I had the chicken with roasted carrots, fresh micro greens with a tomatillo salsa that added just the right amount of flavor without the heat. Everything had great flavor and the chicken was perfectly cooked. My companions had the T-bone and the ribeye which they devoured with a side of rice. I recently went to Oaxaca, Mexico for the Día de Muertos and I experienced some really upscale Mexican restaurants so when I researched the menu I expected the same. The vibe, the decor and ambiance was on point. Location is pretty tucked away on 3rd Avenue. The food was good but definitely overpriced. I ordered the tuna tostada, a mushroom dish and whole Brazino. I don't mind spending money on food when the portion sizes are worth it but not here. Additionally, I will admit, I did not have a reservation but I was seated rather swiftly and FORGOTTEN about. My service was extremely slow. I sat on the patio which is beautiful in the summer however I do believe they are short staffed. I would only go back for bar food to be honest. read more
