I love me a California Burrito so I ordered takeout to try Mezcal's version. Food was ready within a couple of minutes of when it was said it would be ready. Cool spot they have. Little patio with some seats and then couple different dining areas. Started with chips and guac. Very big portion on chips and the guac was large as well. The chips were fine. Could have used some more salt (most places don't salt them enough), but they were fresh so that was good. The guac was solid. Nothing noteworthy, but I liked it. As for the burrito, it was very good. Nice portion and the asada was very tender and flavorful. Never know with that. The fries were crispy as well which is always a worry. It's a cute spot not too far from the Q line or walking distance to several places in Detroit and smells amazing when you walk by. We all came here on a Friday night for the first time after visiting the DIA museum. Parking on the street was easy to find. It wasn't very crowded so it didn't take long for us to be seated. The music and vibrant decor really set the vibe. It was giving Hispanic culture, and we enjoyed it. There was a dj and even a small area for dancing! Once seated, our waitress was great with taking our orders and prompt with bringing out our food soon as it was ready. For appetizers we had the chip & dip trio and the ceviche. Both were good, but nothing to go crazy over. The margarita was strong in sprit, the way I like. For entrees we got chicken tamales, steak tacos, and chicken enchiladas. The tamales were decent. The enchiladas had unseasoned chicken on the inside so that was a major disappointment. I was going to order churros for dessert but I got full faster than thought. The ambiance was really nice and decorative. The waitress was attentive and the food came out fairly quickly. I started with the Chips Trio. It came with queso, guacamole and salsa. The guac and queso were really good and fresh. I did not care for the salsa. Then I had the Ceviche. It was good. It had green grapes in it, which was a first but it wasn't bad. For my entree I got the Enchiladas Suizas. The sides were the standout. It came with beans and rice which was really good. They had the option to get just cheese or chicken. I chose the chicken and it was a poor choice. The chicken was unseasoned. It looked and tasted as if it was just boiled. I was not a fan. It did not help that my party had the tamales with chicken and theirs was extremely well seasoned. Another person in my party had the Ribeye Tacos and those were well seasoned too. What's not to love about Mezcal? Friendly and fast service, zippy cocktails, delicious food, and fun laidback atmosphere. Our waiter was very nice and checked in on us several times throughout our meal. As we were ordering, he input our order on his device and our Chips Trio came immediately! The guac was okay, but the queso really stole the show. I got the Ella Baila Solo, and the smokiness of the mezcal really showed through, while still balancing the other flavors of the cocktail. I was eating light that night, so I got the Mezcal Soup as my main. The chicken in it was a little dry but nicely shredded and the broth was super tasty. We had the family dinner style where they bring out food to us. Chips and salsa were offered first, then beef tacos, followed by chicken tacos and pork tacos. We were very full by the time pork tacos came out and there were veggie tacos after which I could not eat anymore. All the tacos were delicious. We ordered the chilaquiles verde, veggie breakfast taco plate, chicken tostada, asada puffy taco, and 2 sides of rice and beans. Food looked nice and was pretty good, but the breakfast tacos were a bit small (my husband was still hungry after finishing the plate) and the sides of rice and beans were extra. There is an automatic 20% gratuity added to the bill regardless of party size, but minor tweaks to the orders were largely ignored. For instance, for my chilaquiles, I requested the eggs over easy, but they came out scrambled (waitress said kitchen had confirmed they could do over easy when I ordered). Ordered chips and salsa to start; (3) steak șopes; three puffy chicken taco; cokes to drink. Salsa and chips are the best I have ever tasted. There is a very delightful seasoning on the chips that have them a taste to remember. The sopes and puffy tacos tasted as if they were prepared in Mexico and brought to the table(delicious). We stopped in to try Mezcal a new neighborhood spot. As another reviewer mentioned, it was very expensive for mediocre food. The ceviche was heavy heavy lime and cilantro. It was missing so much. The flavor was flat and bitter despite the amount of lime. The texture of the fish was great. The tacos were alright. Everything we ate just felt like it was missing depth of flavor. The service was good however, we asked for more chips for the ceviche, and they never came. Two stars is kind. We usually go to the Mezcal in Ferndale, but with the street fair going, we decided to try the mid-town Detroit Mezcal. We were told it was the same owner. When we got there, it was fairly empty. There were four of us. The waitress was kind. The chips were not gratis so we ordered the chips with trio dips. We ordered street tacos and some other dishes. The waitress asked if we wanted the side dishes and we said yes to the guacamole, rice and beans. The dishes arrived on cartoonish 2.25" single corn taco shells The Pastor plate was bare other than the two tiny mostly empty street tacos. Pastor was dried straggly strings that looked like it had been under lights since breakfast. There were two tiny juiceless, dried pie shaped pieces of pineapple atop . None of our food was hot including the rice. I asked where is the guacamole and our waitress looked surprised and said you would like guacamole? I said well, you asked me if I wanted guacamole and wrote something down when I said yes. Other party with us had the same experience with the sides. We all agreed fast food would have been more honest. We ate the food and asked for the check. It was $150 with a 20% gratuity already factored in. We were charged twice for the guacamole and for the missing rice and beans. We pointed it out. Love this place! The food is fresh, prepared in house and reasonably priced. The location is great, with ample on street parking and a lot for $3, or free if no one is there to collect. They are open Sundays, closed on Mondays. My husband and I and friends have never had a bad experience. The decor is nice, they have outdoor seating and a bar area. I absolutely loved the Al Pastor taco with tender pork, pineapple, onions and cilantro. Probably one of my top favorite tacos now! All the food was flavorful, fresh, and nicely presented. The delicious margarita I had was almost too pretty to drink (but I did, haha) The drinks are excellent but pricey. I would have trimmed $30 off my bill without the two margaritas, and that's probably what I'll do the next time. As good as they were, I'd rather save the money. Nice atmosphere, with a cozy feel. We visited Oaxaca a few years ago and loved it, so we were really excited to try Mezcal. We only had time for cocktails and apps so we sat at the bar and ordered a Mezcal flight and a Mezcal cocktail. I was so happy to see that they served Mezcal exactly the same way as they do in Oaxaca. The glasses, worm salt, orange slices and fried crickets were exactly like how they were served in Oaxaca. The cocktail was delicious and nicely served too. We ordered the empanada de tinga, which was a lovely crust filled with spicy chicken. Delicious. We also had to try the esquites, Mexican street corn in a bowl since we ate it many times in Mexico. It was spot on. I would definitely come back here. It's also right next to the parking garage downtown and across the street there's a parking lot you can park in for a small fee also. I came to this location in Detroit with my party of seven, and I will say, I don't think I have ever been to a restaurant that satisfied all of us more than Mezcal! From the beginning, the service was excellent, the wait-time was practically non existent, and the atmosphere was welcoming! I am a fairly picky eater, so I ordered a cheese quesadilla with pastor (marinated pork and pineapple) and it was AMAZING! The serving size was perfect, it wasn't exceptionally messy, and it was everything I believe a quesadilla should be. Despite being so full, I couldn't resist the temptation of flan. When I saw it coming to the table, I already knew it was going to be good. It was larger than most flans I have had and it came topped with yummy strawberries. This was, by far, the BEST flan I've ever had. 10/10 I will absolutely be eating here any time I am in the city!! read more

After waiting 70 minutes my wife and I we seated at the bar on Saturday night. One finds out there are no chips and sasa provided like most Mexican restraunts but available at a charge. Note, beans and rice are not provided either with a meal at least when I ordered 2 full dinners we never received any. The beverage of choice listed on the drink menu is the margarita and is highlighted. My wife and I both order one each. Mistake. The drink was small, and had more ice than liquid. The drink was so watered down that I returned it to the bartender with vocal disappointment. He took it away and I was not charged. I was also not asked if I would prefer another choice. He stated that I should have ordered a PREMIUM margarita to get something that is a step above water. This was very arrogant and not necessary. The dinner entries were okay but pricey and small in quantity. There are many very good Mexican restraunts in Detroit in corktown and elsewhere. I recommend one go somewhere else if you are looking for a good place. read more

Oh how much I wanted to love this place!! Pros -Good Guac -Ambiance (love the vibes) -Good Soy Taco -Good location Cons - Beans seemingly from the can. Please take the time to make flavored refried beans especially for the vegetarians. -Chips that came with nachos were not sturdy enough for the toppings. They broke off very easily. -Chips and salsa are not complementary -Nachos had the option of steak/chicken but there needs to be a veggie option as the meat is more expensive than veggies. -The tortillas for the tacobirria were not cooked long enough to have the crisp it should. -The nachos in the happy hour deal does not come with all the ingredients listed in the normal menu so while it may seem like a good deal, it's actually not a deal at all. It seemed like canned nacho cheese, chips, and pico (Our food came out within 5 min) -The service was not amazing like prior reviews. We had to ask the server about happy hour deals and she told us it ended at 5 (it was around 4:20pm). When I asked if the nachos on the happy hour came with beans and she said I'm sure it does but it did not come with the beans or the guac. We ended up paying the full price of a regular nacho order + and order of guac. -They added an automatic 20% gratuity for a party of 2 which was a little weird to me (normally see this in parties of 6 or more) -Tacobirria order did not come with rice and beans which are items that usually come with a taco order I do love the Ferndale location and the staff there were great too! I would recommend the owners do make some changes because they are rivaling their close neighbors in Mexicantown. Would love to try this place again if changes are made :) read more
