Visited this restaurant last week after we walked the Gordie Howe bridge. We were seated at 1:50 PM. We received our food a little after 2 PM . I noticed that the portions were larger than noted on the lunch menu. The waitress said that the menu changes over at 1:50 PM. The menu said lunch is served until 2 PM. Trying local, ethnic eateries, our group of six chose Xochimilco's for our monthly luncheon. I will NEVER return. Food was 'myeh', margaritas were ok, HOWEVER, the 'uninvited guests' crawling on the wall next to us stopped us cold. Told waitress, no reaction. Gave us our total bills with no comment. Although this is probably one of the first places that you think of when you go to Mexican town in Detroit, it really is not the greatest. The atmosphere is super fun, the drinks are big. The music is loud. But the food is just quite subpar. I've ordered enchiladas there and then one time. I just ordered a quesadilla and frankly a lot of it was lacking flavor. My favorite part about enchiladas are just that they're doused and sauce but when the sauce doesn't have you and trans, the mule is just quite heavy and not the greatest. Our dinner group goes to a different restaurant every month, beginning with the next letter of the alphabet. This was X, and Xochimilco was the choice. I was very excited. I loved the decor, although all I saw of it was the first room. We were among the last of our group to arrive, so chips & salsa were already on the table. They were ok; nothing special. I don't usually get alcoholic beverages, but I felt like one that night. I got a small Sangria. It was good, but I really wish it had been colder. For dinner, I got the #2 combination. (I always like combinations because I can never decide what to get.) It was HUGE! A nice, crispy chicken taco that was so full of stuff that I had to use a fork and knife (gasp! :o ), a beef chimichanga which I took home, beans and rice. And, it came with sour cream and guacamole hidden underneath. (I didn't actually see the guac until I was reheating the leftovers.) Everything tasted good, and it reheated nicely as well. This place is a classic. My family has been coming here for decades. The decor is colorful, the staff is attentive, and the food is very good. We always have a great time here. Large free parking lot outside. I love the hot homemade tortilla chips, right out the oven. The flaming cheese is delicious. We love this for an appetizer. Meat, cheese and a special sauce, what's not to love. My mom loves the quesadillas. I really enjoyed my carne asada and it came with fresh guacamole, salad, and warm tortillas. I really like their refried beans too. Very creamy. The rice is okay. They have a full bar and yummy margaritas. Excellent service. Fun ambiance. It gets very busy on weekend evenings. We were with a large group that split into about 5 or 6 tables in the back room and it was delightful. The interior was festive and the waitstaff was fantastic. Phenomenal drinks (our table had margaritas, tequila sunrises and Mexican coffee) and the food was wonderful. Big plates with plenty of rice and beans along with whatever you ordered. I've been coming to Xochimilco's since childhood and not much has changed which is a good thing. The food, service, and ambience has remained untouched since the 1980s. From those first bites of the crispy light chips to their delicious homemade salsa it's always worth a trip to Southwest Detroit's Mexicantown. This last trip was on Tigers Opening Day. Luckily our group got there just before the crowds showed up after the game. Promptly seated we had a basket of those delicious chips in front of us quickly and a margarita followed. After careful deliberation we settled with combo plates. I chose combo #1 which came with 2 crispy beef tacos, cheese enchilada, 1 flauta, and a bean and cheese tostada. Of course I opted for cheese on top of everything ($1 extra but definitely worth it). Portions are huge and you'll probably have enough to take home for another meal. While the prices have gone up it is still very reasonable for all the food you get. I'm glad Xochimilco is just as I remember from childhood. I'm already looking forward to a return visit when the Mexican food cravings hit! read more

Come on Xochis! You're failing of late. Chunky beef burritos were very dry. I'm used to the meat being very tender and comes apart easily. Not the case. Chunks of hard, dried out beef. The chicken fajita's were pretty dry as well and a very small amount of peppers with it. Flaming cheese had zero chorizo pieces and no onion, very small amount of peppers. Quality has gone down considerably which is so frustrating since they have been such a main stay for us. May have to venture to other Mexican town establishments if this is the new norm. read more

This is a classic staple in Detroit. If you're looking for some great burritos, enchiladas, nachos, etc, this is your place! The deep fried flour chicken tacos and cheese enchiladas were awesome. Stopped by Xochimilco in Detroit and was not disappointed. I got the frijoles y queso burritos and a cold Sol beer--simple, but so good. The burritos were loaded with creamy beans and melted cheese, wrapped up in a soft tortilla that hit the spot. Nothing fancy, just comforting, flavorful, and filling. The Sol was the perfect pairing--light, crisp, and refreshing enough to cut through the richness of the burritos. The vibe inside is classic and cozy, with that old-school charm that makes you feel right at home. Service was fast and friendly, and everything came out hot and fresh. The food here is excellent -- my mother has been coming here on and off for 50 years! And they didn't given me any issues with my Service Dog which I greatly appreciated. It was kind of a noisy place, so if you have guests with hearing issues this may not be the best option. It is very dim with pretty twinkle lighting. Food -- my husband ordered Combination #1 and absolutely loved it. I ordered the chicken burritos and the beans were smokey and the burritos weren't packed with unnecessary ingredients. My sister ordered the chicken chimichangas and they were so crunchy, but thin and the fried bits aren't overpowering. My mother ordered the cheese enchiladas and they came out screaming hot! Absolutely zero complaints or critiques on the food. The guy at the front desk wasn't pleasant at all he should not be the first person you encounter upon arrival. We've been going here for years and love the food. Today we had a server named Junior. Wow! What an attitude he had. We had dirty glasses and asked for clean glasses. He was irritated. Waited for our food for 30 min. Ok. They were busy. My food came 15 min after everyone else's. No apology Asked for refill on drink. Again he seemed irritated. He never returned. Then we had to wave him down which also included him ignoring us. But this review is being posted because they keep ignoring our requests to stop parking their giant luxury truck on the sidewalk. There is some tremendous entitlement in thinking you can just block an extra foot of the sidewalk with your $80,000 car and not suffer any consequences because why would we ever write tickets here. Cheese!? If cheese is extra say that when asked. I have came to this restaurant for decades and I never paid for cheese on an enchilada; but understanding the current times I know prices have gone up and I'm 100 percent okay with paying for the price of what I order when going out to a restaurant. I politely asked the hostess is cheese included with an enchilada ( as it has been in the past) the hostess tells me that the cheese is included. I get to my destination and cheese was not included (see picture) it is sad. I am pleased to pay for my order, tip the hostess and or waitress. Update: I call and give my complaint. The first party I spoke to made light of my concern then simply transferred me to another party that had NO idea what was the nature of my call. I explain my concern to the party that stated their name was Emilio; they stated that "some" people don't want cheese on an enchilada. I advised him that I had a cheese conversation about the cheese on my enchilada and it was NEVER requested to be no cheese. This party didn't apologize or show any issue with the incorrect order. He did say I could bring the food back and he would have it remade properly as ordered or "work something out". No concern for my travel time, my time, or gas. But...nproblem bringing the order back but is the order being reused or simply thrown away once viewed? I can't see what is being done in the back. My concern is to bring it back are you sending out food to different patrons that return the food due to incorrect orders. No thanks or the remake I will politely request a refund. I have to give Xochimilco five stars. It is a Detroit staple for me and my family. The menu, the food, the interior have not changed since the 1970s. The food is always good. Price is good. My recommendation is the fajitas. They are covered with cheese, and I love the char on the veggies. Plenty of chicken and steak. This is not a heart-healthy meal. We usually order a bunch of dishes to split. We always get plenty of food, often taking some home. They have general Mexican and American beer. Think Corona. No craft beer here. (Craft beer had not been invented in the 1970s). Margaritas are ok. The ambiance is stuck in the 70s. It is nostalgic for me. I love the dark and dingy interior. I am pretty sure there is no way it is up to code, but I find that charming. The service is hit and miss (as it always has been, and always should be). It feels like Mexican food should be accompanied by hit-and-miss service. We will be back. read more

DO NOT waste your money on this bull crap. We got a liter of the margaritas that looked like unfiltered tap water and taste nasty. Honestly one of the worst margaritas we have had. Then the server said "well it's from a batch we made this morning". After all of our food was brought out, they forgot one of our entrees. We had to remind the server that one of our entrees didn't come out, then he comes out a few minutes later and said "oh sorry we're out of that" after everyone was already halfway done with their food. We asked to speak with the manager who was very disrespectful and dismissive and said "well your getting free food anyways" it's horrible that one of us had to rush to eat his dinner that just came out after we asked for boxes for everyone else food. My ladies friends and I went there Thursday evening after work. My one friend ordered a quesadilla and when it came out it was three barely anything In it tortilla shells. it wasn't flat and grilled like a quesadilla and there was not much in the shells. it looked like a poor excuse of a taco. we called over the manager after talking to the waitress. the manager said that's how it's made and said he couldn't do anything about it. my other two friends and myself gave her some of our food. she ate one but it was not what she expected. it was three taco shells with very little of anything in them. the manager wasn't mean but he wasn't trying to satisfy paying customers. and there was a lot of added costly items for my other friends. A $26 meal was was $33. and they charged extra for lettuce and tomatoes. the economy is bad but you dont have to gauge your loyal customers. I been going here for years and will not be returning.
