We went on the second night after their reopening. My wife and I split the pork carnitas and they were very good! Salsa rojo was very good too, and better than it was before the tornado! This was always our go to for Mexican food for the last 25 years, and we've checked back often waiting for them to reopen. The other el tapatio locations don't have the same salsa verde and I've never seen this style of it anywhere else. It was a little different, a little more lemon juice maybe but still the star of the show! Service was spot on and with a very personable and attentive waitress who checked on us frequently. The food here is great, always served piping hot on a hot plate (if you're getting a hot dish). The manager, Juan, is beyond stellar, and the staff are always super kind and helpful. Typical (Americanized) Mexican restaurant, except they have someone that will go around with a cart and make fresh guacamole for you--I have not seen this before. I am vegan and this ordered from the vegetarian menu. I ordered the 3 Spinach burritos and beans on the side, emphasizing NO cheese on any part of the dish. When I got my food it looked great but the spinach sauce that was covering my burritos had cheese in it. This is my favorite go-to restaurant in Rocky Mount. I am a sucker for Mexican food, so I might be a little bit biased on my love towards El Tap. So far, I've been to El Tap only during lunch times, and it can get crowded. But I never had issues with not finding a table/seat. The BEST thing about El Tap is the guac cart! They literally bring a cart full of ingredients ready for making guacamole right in front of your eyes. You can make it extra sour (w/ line), extra spicy (w/ jalapenos), and etc. You can customize however you want & see how guac is made in front of you. I love the fresh taste of guac right after it's made :) I've also been to Raleigh/New Bern Ave location of El Tap, but the guac was not as good as this place. I don't know what it is, but this place knows their guac!!! Their dishes are all delicious, and lunch menus are very affordable! This restaurant was close to our hotel and had decent reviews, so we figured we would try it. Such a disappointment. The service was fine, but the food was not great, the only exception being the chips and salsa. They weren't spectacular, but they certainly beat my entree. I had the carne asada tacos and the meat was way too salty. Not only that, but it seemed as if it sat there a little too long. I have had some awesome carne asada tacos in Texas, and this did not come close. I don't like beans do I didn't try them, but the rice was way too dry. El Tapatio is a good place for Mexican food in Wilson. I have eaten at this restaurant since it was opened. They have consistently good food. I like the chips and salsa. The salsa is mild, but has a good flavor. I really enjoy the fajitas. I get the fajitas with refried beans and salad. The chicken fajitas are my favorite. Worst tacos I've had in my life. Service was really slow, was sitting outside and actually needed to walk inside myself to get requests because waiter rarely came out. Ordered soft beef tacos. It was definitely something that had been removed from a freezer and reheated. It tasted overly processed. While I never leave bad reviews, and try to give establishments the benefit of the doubt I can't do it this time. My wife ordered the Chipotle Chicken and I ordered the Texas Fajitas they where both absolutely horrible. Her meal included liver which wasn't in the meal description and my meal tasted stale like the chicken was on the last day before expiration. The wait staff was very friendly. But once again I must say that is the worst Mexican food I have ever had I will not be returning and I do not recommend this establishment to anyone. read more

Being from a large city, I came in with low expectations for the culinary fare in Rocky Mount especially after the first week. On the night before we were scheduled to leave, my coworker and I decided to try out El Tapatio since it was so close to the office. This place definitely impressed. The fresh guacamole is made table-side and is a must try while you're here. Not the best guacamole ever in the world, but definitely a nice touch to this place. I ended up getting enchiladas as per our waitress's recommendation and they were delicious as well. For desert we ordered the cheesecake and the churros. Portions were indulgent and it tasted just as good as the meal. This seems like a fun place to go on a Friday after work to grab a few drinks. Also, props to our waitress, Sheila. She was funny and really easy to talk too. While it may not be the BEST MEXICAN FOOD EVERRR, it is absolutely the best choice for food in Rocky Mount. read more

Always stop by with my friends when I'm in town, definitely some good Mexican food here! We typically go on Sunday, it's pretty busy on Sunday afternoon, but we still get seated fairly quickly. The menu is full of your standard Mexican entrees, giant burritos, fajitas, combination plates. The chips are always warm and crispy, and the salsa is pretty tasty. I usually get a chicken entree, this past visit I got Chicken Chipotle, which was pretty good; the sliced chicken was tender and the chipotle cheese sauce was flavorful. Service can be hit or miss, on previous visits our waiter was really attentive, but on this past visit, the waiter didn't pay too much attention to us after we got the food. I'm not hard to please when it comes to local Mexican restaurants, so if you're looking for your typical Mexican food where the portions are huge and the service is quick, you'll leave here satisfied. read more
