Taco Chon brought me back to living in San Diego, nice to have an authentic Mexican restaurant in the area. Great menu options (menu in store was bigger than online which was a pleasant surprise). Service was so pleasant and friendly. Food was fast and delicious! Rice and beans were good. The pastor didn't blow me away like pastor often does, but it was still really good. I'll be back! Excellent! So happy Taco Chon is in the southern metro and on the way when going to the Cities. We made our first visit this past week after watching a segment on Fox 9 around the ongoing Taco Chon / Taco John legal troubles. Wanted to support this local establishment and also get some good Mexican food. It was around 230 PM on a Friday and it was bustling. Ordered some street tacos with a variety of meats and was amazed at how fresh, hot, and savory it was. Loved it. I wanted to love Taco Chon! Ordered quite a few things but honestly wasn't very good. I also got very sick a few hours after eating. Not sure if it was this place or what. The guacamole is nothing more than mushed avocados, no seasoning whatsoever. Disappointing but the chips were good. Got a couple burritos and some Birria tacos. Mediocre. Cashiers are a bit impatient if you have not been there before to know correct ingredients. Serve yourself forks, drinks and they have the old hand filled ice dispenser . This is my 2nd time here. The first time I ordered street tacos and they were really good. My son had a chicken burrito that he liked. Fast forward 3 weeks and we returned. Son orders a chicken tinga burrito and scarfed it down. I followed other yelpers recommendations and ordered a barbacoa beef casadilla like Napoleon Dynamites grandma calls them. Very tasty with Mexican crema not American sour cream. The service was very friendly. They added some new items from a few weeks ago including a breakfast burrito and torta sandwiches. Enjoyable casual dining with great service. You can tell this place is newer and still getting into their groove. I got the vegetarian V burrito which had really good flavor but the soy meat was cold by the time I sat down. It would be nice too if the rice had a version that was not made with chicken powder in it. The best part hands down was the churros with Nutella to dip them in. In terms of set up, I would suggest having a more distinct place for dirty dishes to be stacked instead of the same counter space as the cutlery. read more

The prices have really gone up here. Some are up 40% in a short period of time. Must more than other places. Plus the service has gone down and they have smaller portions. Better places in the area now. read more

One of the few authentic and legit Mexican restaurants south of river (heck, metro area)! The birria tacos with the consomé dipping sauce is a must-try. If you haven't had it before, the elote and esquite (Mexican street corn / served on cob or in a cup) is also a worthy recommendation. If you're feeling a bit adventurous, try a dish with the lengua protein. It's surprisingly tender and flavorful. If you're in Burnsville I would recommend stopping here and grabbing a burrito. Everything I've tried here is pretty alright but my fav is the barbacoa burrito. Taco Chon reminds me of Chipotle the way the food line is setup. They have rice, 2 different bean, different meats pork, chicken and beef, pico, guacamole, sour cream, 3 different salsas (I like the reddish colored one) cheese and lettuce. My favorites are the barbacoa and chipotle chicken. You can't go wrong with a burrito for $6.99. Guac is extra but I recommend getting it. I love the barbacoa in a burrito and the chipotle chicken in tacos. read more

Totally reminds me of tacos when I was in Colombia as they have salchi papas on the menu (potato's topped with fixings) Like others have said it's similar to chipotle where you go through the assembly line to pick your toppings. We got the taco plate you get either 3 flour tortillas or 5 corn and 1 choice of protein ( I got Lengua while my husband got the steak). With a side of rice and beans ( pinto or black) . Topping wise lettuce, sour cream, variety of hot sauces, cheese, pico de gallo and extra for guacamole. The queso cheese and chips are very good. Prices are under $10 per serving. My husband and I tried Taco Chon's last night and this is the review to read. We are not basic foodies but actually know great food, have traveled Mexico extensively and have the palate to differentiate authentic Mexican food to mediocre Americanized Mexican food. This place it by far the best Mexican we have had in Minnesota. The Aguachile was fantastic. It is a must try. The heat from the peppers mixed with the cool of the shrimp, cucumbers and onions had us wanting more. Fabulous flavor and made to order. Nachos Locos had the right amount of meat and toppings so every bite was an explosion of flavor. The Birria Taco Plate was insanely delicious, tacos with the right amount of crunch to the delicious and flavorful consommé. The food was not the only surprise, we ended up chatting with the owners. Went in on a Wednesday night after work, around 5:30/6PM, and we were easily able to get in and order and get a seat without any waiting. When you first walk in you will go towards the back of the restaurant where you will see a giant menu of all their options. If you are an awkward person like me sometimes, for sure check the menu out before going, there are so many options and it will take you a bit to understand each combo/plate option along with the meat options you have, but its all a standing and reading menu and walk up to order type of place and find a seat after. They had plenty of seating from high tops, booths and regular tables. They did not rush you at all to make a decision and was super friendly when ordering. We ordered a taco plate of the tripa, a birria quesadilla plate, a chicken enchilada and a cup of corn. It was all amazing, and we spent after tip about $40, it was a ton of food too, but we made sure to go hungry! I cannot wait to come back for their great service and great food! read more

This is only getting two stars instead of one because my husband's taco plate was ok. I first attempted to order taquitos and was told they were out, except for the people before and after me were able to order them. I then asked for enchiladas and was first told they were out, but then he walked to the cooler and got 3 tortillas and threw them on the grill. The enchiladas had no flavor. My husband ordered the taco plate and asked for retried beans. He was told they have no refuted beans except....they were right there in front of us, along with pinto and black beans. Otherwise he said the taco plate was alright but nothing special We ordered a mango margarita and a fountain drink. There was no ice in the ice machine so a warm fountain drink accompanied our dinner. The mango margarita? Absolutely no mango flavor except for the mango piece hung on the side of the glass. And the actual flavor of the margarita? Not sure. It was a flavor neither of us had ever had before. It wasn't mango or tequila of any kind. We wound up leaving with a half empty enchilada plate and a full margarita of some strange flavor. read more

We absolutely love Taco Chon, we typically always get a birria taco plate, and a taco platter I believe. Birria is 3 tacos with consommé and the platter we almost always do 2 lengua and one tripe taco that comes with rice and beans. I try to get an extra side each of rice and beans and my husband and I split it all and are more than satisfied and full at the end. Flavorful consommé, tender lengua, delicious salsa, super friendly staff. Authentic Mexican cuisine and decent price and portions. I love the variety in the meats they offer and am grateful for the less typical ones like the lengua and tripe. We order out or eat in at Taco Chons at least 2-3 times a month. You order and they make everything fresh, you have a number and they call the order and you grab your food. It's a smaller space but plenty of seating (seat yourself) and the staff always handles chaotic lunch rushes etc with grace. If it's warmer out there's plenty of parks and outdoor areas close by you could picnic at! read more

First time ever yelp reviewer...EVER! Ordered takeout which was supposed to be ready at 7 PM... All three had Pastor... At 7:20 we were informed that only one of our items could have Pastor (after waiting in the parking lot for 20 minutes) 7:27, the order comes out. No Pastor, no guacamole (which we paid for), and I gave them a $3.25 tip! Seriously?! Y'all have too much competition to be so weak. Although my sister recommended Super Taco, I went to this place because it was closer. I ordered the Taco combo. The rice was plain and tasteless, the beans tasted old & burnt. I'm not sure what they're trying to do with the tacos... the shredded cheese, white sauce, lettuce... I couldn't find the Mexican or any flavor to it. I was expecting authentic Mexican food, but definitely not the case. Last but not least, the drink from their cooler was warm, not sure if the refrigerator isn't working properly or need some logistical training in "first in first out". Very disappointed with the food at this restaurant. My burrito was not hot, more cold than warm. The chicken was shredded and could have been canned chicken as far as I am concerned, or even canned tuna? The other people in my group were also disappointed with their meal. One person ordered a sandwich, which was ridiculously quite burnt. I would be ashamed to serve someone this mess at my own home. Honestly, I think we would have been satisfied at the local McDonalds compared to this place. Not great comparing satisfaction with a fast food place. A better choice would be Chipotle or Costa Vida. Both of these restaurants have fresh food, served hot, with consistent quality. The drink machine area also needed to be cleaned. Such a shame that this restaurant didn't deliver good food. Very disappointed . Came here after a few months. Very disorganized. No guacamole. What Mexican restaurant has no guacamole. Had a chicken tinga burrito. Chicken cold. My friends burrito was steaming hot which mine should have been. Asked for no cilantro. And what a surprise I got cilantro. Don't give me the excuse that you're shorthanded. Everyone is shorthanded. I work in a building lwhere the line to check out was at least 50 people long and no one complained. Sorry taco chon.
