The food was absolutely delicious! The tacos were fresh, hot, and well seasoned. The happy hour margaritas were also really good! Especially when it's a 2 for 1! We visited this restaurant for the last time this afternoon. I was yelled at by the manager and basically accused of ordering a green salsa dish when I ordered a red salsa dish. I kindly told our waitress that I ordered red and she apologized and took it back to the kitchen. a few minutes later she came back and said that they don't have red aguachile. I again kindly told her that I didn't order the green please take it off my bill (the juice on this did not even look green, it literally looked like dirty dish water). As she walked back to the kitchen I heard her manager with an angry tone speaking in Spanish and stating that I was paying for the dish. I don't think she thought we spoke Spanish and when she came over to the table I told her the same thing that I was not paying for something I didn't order. She began to raise her voice and argue, "Did you order the green aguachile?" I responded in the same sarcastic tone at this point and told her no I ordered red. She repeated the same thing over and over again about 5 times. The tone continued to get louder and more sarcastic until she realized I was not backing down. She continued to talk and bitch about it to the bar and my husband attempted to go and talk with a manager and she said she was the manager. She started to argue and treat him the same way. Overall, this interaction was appalling and disrespectful. This is a different world and can't believe I'm seeing this behavior by management. We have eaten at Los Ocampo many times. Today we placed a takeout order. A cheese Quesadilla. An order we have made many times. Always came as a classic Quesadilla would two flour tortillas filled and cut into fourths. Today we came home and opened up to a single flour tortilla folded over like a soft taco filled with some cheese and an over abundance of lettuce and radishes. Not at all what we have received when ordering the same thing in the past. It is Cinco De Mayo so they are incredibly busy so I assumed I was given the wrong order. I wasn't going to go all the way back but called to tell them of the mix up. I was then told that yes that is what constitutes a Quesadilla at their restaurant and there was nothing she could do. I explained that I had ordered Quesadillas from them many times and they always came looking like a standard Quesadilla. She said no- that is not what a Quesadilla is at their restaurant. I explained once again that this was not my first time ordering this dish from them but she was insistent. I thanked her for her time and hung up. Confused. Nice enough place. Very full and feeling extra lazy after eating here. Like what they've done to the Bakers Square. It's nice and open and the tables are spaced out nicely and not right on top of each other. Food is very filling and pretty good. I ordered the lunch gordita with all rice, no beans which was very good. The rice was done just the way I like it. Fluffy and moist. The gordita shell was a tad greasy, but still good and went well with the skirt steak inside. J ordered the burrito los ocampo with chicken which was pretty good size. First round of chips is complimentary, second round is 2.99. Salsa is ok, the green super hot is very good. Great service and fast. We waited quite a long time, we ordered another queso and that came out prior to our meals. Once the meals came out, we both were dissapointed. The pork was burnt on my Sope and my cousins flautas we're dry chicken, soggy tortilla and not edible. The lack of a waiter/waitress is the main reason for such a low rating. Never established who the waiter was or which person that was. We are still waiting for the check, been 20 minutes since taking our plates. Dine and dash???? I've been here a times. A few very different times. I'm actually a little confused. The first time was for lunch. They have pretty good weekday lunch deals that come with soup or salad and small sides of rice and beans. When I got there, I was craving a hot, cheesy, gooey quesadilla, ya know? I quickly ordered one but what I got was a dry tortilla filled with mostly lettuce and radish, with a little bit of dry crumbly cheese. It didn't have much flavor either. I was very sad and even hit an all-time low of considering going to Taco Bell while sober. I gave them a second chance and came back in for lunch with a friend. This time, I stepped up my game and got a pork tamales special. It came with chicken soup, but I was confused to find that the shredded chicken felt very dry, even though it was swimming in liquid. Thankfully, the tamales redeemed the dry wet soup! They were flavorful and topped with plenty of melty cheese. My friend got the Cubana Torta - this is what I recommend you get if you come here. It's packed with Steak milanesa, chorizo, egg, salchicha, ham, topped with a mixture of chicken and melted cheese. I'm pretty sure the "salchicha" was sliced hot dogs, and I'm still not sure how I feel about that. But altogether it made an impressive (and HUGE) mouthful. read more

Los Ocampo is a very welcome addition to an East side that has been pretty much devoid of good Mexican fare (they just opened in late February). Those that are familiar with their other locations will not be disappointed, and those that aren't are in for a treat. This addition to the Ocampo family is certainly the largest and also has a full bar which earns extra points in my book. Menu selections mirror that of their other locations and features a number of menu items you won't find at the more suburban Mexican joints on the East side (e.g., lengua, huarachazo, etc.). Speaking specifically to this location the carnitas, lengua and pastor tacos are all on point and the huarachazo is delicious and I'm sure I'll find plenty more favorites since I'll be back often when needing to escape the office for lunch. Even the afterthought menu items like rice, beans, etc. are all quite good as well. On the subject of lunch, they have a number of choices available for their lunch specials that include drink, rice, beans, soup or salad and entree selection all priced under $10. The complimentary chips are also quite good, though the accompanying salsa is a bit lacking. Portion sizes are also very generous - I've easily gotten two meals out of most entrees. The only nitpicky complaints I can make are the service which can be a bit spotty, but always friendly, and the decor, which still feels a lot like the old Baker's Square this location used to be, though it is still fairly cozy and very clean. Bottom line: very good, reasonably priced Mexican food with a quaint bar if you're looking to just pony up to a pint or two and grab a bite. read more

This a story about how the best lunch in the last year, turned into the worst. My wife and I had a Living Social coupon for $30 at Los Ocampo, so we asked some friends if they would like to join us, they agreed. We arrived at the old Baker's Square building and it was pretty empty, I walked by the bar and noticed Pacifico on tap, as well a Modelo. Score! Our waitress came by, and I ordered a big Pacifico on tap. After 5 minutes, I finally got it. This was the start of one of the worst waitress/service experiences I have ever had. Our friends arrived and he ordered a big Pacifico,it took 10 minutes to get his beer, I had to remind our waitress that he ordered a beer. Dear Lord. But WAIT, there is more. I ordered the Torta Cubano, oh my gosh, one of the best tasting sandwiches ever, so many meats, you can't even count. The weird thing was that the menu said all the meats that came on it, and our waitress asked us what kind of meat we wanted? "Umm....Mexican chicken I guess" Even though it says it comes with steak and chorizo. It was like Bizarro world. They asked my friend the same thing, but Hawaiin style, and he was like. "Ummm...Mexican chicken I guess" even though it said the meats on the menu. We all looked at each other like "What"? Then she asked, we only have breaded chicken, do you want that? "Um...No. Grilled please." It was like Mexican restaurant hell. Finally a competent waitress came by to make sure our order was correct, she was great. Here is a great idea, hire people that actually know your menu. Another, Dear Lord moment. My wife ordered a bunch of sides to make her own tacos; beans, salad, rice.They looked spectacular. My other friend got this huge bowl of chicken soup that looked amazing. It also came with 2 fantastic looking tostadas. It was like heaven in a bowl. It was seriously huge! At least 2 meals worth. Then the fun began. They said our coupon had already been used. Well, we have never been here, so there must have been a mistake,so we asked to see the manager. She insisted that they check IDs and she brought out roster with our name highlighted that it had already been used. "Well, we have never been here,so there is a mistake" We noticed the person below was also named Jason, so they highlighted the wrong name. She was like, "We will take take $15 off" Well make it $30 and we are good. Yes, they thought we were trying to use our coupon twice. Now, it is almost impossible to piss me off, but I was now officially mad. You were accusing the most honest people on earth of trying to cheat a restaurant. That is unacceptable. We waited at least 15 minutes for them to fix our bill,finally we left our table with cash on the table with a way too big tip for the service we got. Authentic Mexican Food? Not exactly...but about as close as you get in the Twin Cities. Certainly more authentic and better tasting than Acapulco but not quite as much as El Burrito Mercado. Things I love about this place: 1) Many meat and vegetable options - pick a dish and you can make it your own 2) The spicy mexican chicken is incredible - especially if you request extra spicy (which you have to do for anything you want spicy) 3) The queso blanco is tremendous - it is the primary reason my daughter likes to go here. I order an extra cup so I can combine my portion with some spicy salsa to give it some kick....Muy bien! 4) Alambres - choice of meat with peppers, onion, bacon, ham, mozzarella cheese over a bunch of mini tortillas. Very tasty - but eat fast because it does cool off quickly. I like to get the camerones and add mexican chicken. Yes, it is WAY too much food but it is amazing. 5) Shrimp tacos are outstanding 6) Tamales are good 7) They are always happy to modify any item to make sure it is the way you like it. Things that made me drop a star: 1) Service has been either really good or painfully slow - regardless of how busy it is 2) The last two times I've been there I've had to ask for salsa - even though we ordered queso blanco. What kind of mexican restaurant doesn't bring you, and keep refilling, salsa? 3) Elotes - I LOVE mexican street corn and often make it home on the grill. Here I have ordered it twice - once is was good (but not great) and the other time is was awful - luke warm, corn was mushy. If you're going to serve elotes they should be freshly grilled, fully coated and sprinkled with lots of cotija cheese and chili powder. If not - don't bother. All in all, this is a great place for very tasty mexican fare. I'll definitely put up with a few annoyances to satisfy my cravings for good food! read more

This was our second time coming to Los Ocampos. We had the tamales and enchiladas tonight and we each also added a taco. All in all, this is some of the best local Mexican food that we've had lately. Similar to Teresa's, Los Ocampo is in a building formerly occupied by a chain restaurant. In this case, Los Ocampo used to be a Baker's Square off of 94 and White Bear. There is nothing about the exterior that screams "yummy Mexican food." Once I was seated, my opinion began to change. The server was one of the friendliest that Ive had in the past few years--anywhere. She was very kind, smiley, and attentive. The menu was what you might expect from a Mexican place of this level, but the prices seemed good. I ordered a tamale platter which was outstanding. I have a big appetite but I could barely finish my food. It came with rice, beans, chips, salsa, 2 tamales, and a beverage. I believe all of that cost me around $7.50, but Id have to check to be certain--I just recall thinking what a great value it was. You might not expect to get delicious Mexican food in an old Baker's Square, but I dont think any fan of Mexican food would be greatly disappointed in their experience here. This place always gives us GREAT service, which I appreciate. Their food is always well cooked and prepped, BUT the quality of the meats and veggies seems pretty standard from the look and taste. I've been here many times before but this is my first review. This night we came for my brother's going away dinner. I ordered the Asada Ocampo, which is like their version of Carne Asada? Strip steak seasoned and grilled served with grilled onions, lettuce, tomatoes, Mexican rice, beans, and corn or flour tortillas. Everything was well presented (lettuce, diced tomatoes, beans, and rice) and the steak was cooked to perfection. It was seasoned to just the right amount of saltiness and when eaten together with the sides and accompanying sauces was good. The only thing is like I said above...The meat quality did not seem to be the best though it was cooked well (right). The flavor was more salty than anything else. No subtle goodness or complementary taste to the meal as a whole :( The vegetables were fresh though. Their salsas/sauces were pretty good. I had the green and a light orange sauce... They just have that spark of fire, but it doesn't burn. Also creamy, just the right amount of thickness, and goes well with a lot of their menu items. BE CAREFUL WHEN ORDERING ONLINE!!!!!! My review doesn't even deserve one star. I ordered over $100 in food for pick up at the suburban ave location in St. Paul and when I showed up to pick up my food, they told me a doordash driver had already picked up my food. My address was never provided, so where was this driver going to deliver food to? I ordered "pick up" yet they gave my food to someone to "deliver" it. They were not nice about it when I argued that my order was placed for pick up and not delivery and told me lies because my food was never delivered. They told me to bring up the issue to doordash and didn't even apologize for THEIR mistake! They never even provided me a link to doordash! I called Doordash and they informed me that they NEVER assigned a driver to pick up this order because it was ordered for pick up not delivery. So clearly Los Ocampos lied!
