The waitress took the metal and offered us half off the taco salad which I didn't feel was the proper response. They didn't even offer to make us a new one. Wow. What an awesomely pleasant surprise! We had a wonderful Mother's Day lunch here. It started off a little iffy - we weren't at all crazy about their guacamole or salsa. The guacamole was just really pasty and lacking in cilantro-y goodness. It didn't taste horrible, but I certainty would steer clear of it in the future. Our entrees came out very quick. I had the carnitas and it was extraordinary. Seriously, it was incredibly delicious and pretty much cleared my entire plate. My husband had the taco salad and I had a small taste and it was very good. For dessert we had the flan which was pretty good. I didn't care for the strawberry or chocolate sauce at all and in my opinion greatly ruined such a lovely, traditional Mexican dessert. It was also a bit firmer than I prefer, but the flavors were delicious. Service was extremely nice and efficient! This is the second time I went to El Tequila Salsa and it was equally impressed. Everything was clean, and the employees were organized. Once we sat down they brought our chips and salsa. Then within a minute, a man with a very nice dress attire came and we ordered our drinks. (All of the waiters were clean shaven with a nice dress attire, much nicer than a place like Cancun) There's a large menu, and they were helpful when we had questions. My husband and I both ordered the trio fajitas, and they were delicious! They were well seasoned and there was so much that there was a good amount that we got to take home. So I would take it was worth the $16 a person. Plus you got rice, refried beans, and lettuce on a separate plate. With the option of flour or corn tortillas. (Although I would say the rice was bland.) We didn't have any alcoholic beverages, but they definitely had a lot of choices. Since it was so nice out today, our group of four chose to sit outside, and we were pleasantly surprised with a super clean, stable table with an umbrella and rocking chairs! The food as well was fresh and filling (the streak or chicken nachos are a good choice). The pricing I thought was fair based of the porton sizes you get (food and drinks). We've been here four or five times in our eight years in Wisconsin and it's one of two places we keep on the list for Mexican food in our area (we live about 40 minutes away). I've yet to give a five-star review for a restaurant, as I think those should be done sparingly, but this restaurant comes close for me, as it's consistently very good food, a very pleasant atmosphere, and great service every time. A staple for me is classic Tex-Mex enchiladas with red sauce, cheese and lots of onions, and even though those weren't on the menu the first time we came, the waiter that day (who, as it happened, was the owner) was happy to oblige me. He said they got lots of requests for those, and I think they may have been added to the menu since. Our most recent visit was just two of us (my son and I) this May, and he was very enthusiastic about the place. Even at 12, he's pretty aware of food and its qualities, and he's pretty good at articulating good information about food. He's a huge fan of this place. The family doesn't eat out a lot, but because we're originally Texans, we value Mexican and Tex-Mex highly, so we'll drive up to Wausau before choosing any of the three or four places around here, and El Tequila Salsa is our top choice. read more

Very disorganized and long delays on everything with many empty tables. 20 minutes to get drinks at table after waiting twenty minutes to sit. Was seated in a booth. Menus smelled musty like they had been wiped with a dirty towel. We should have left at that point. When asked our server menu questions about what came with the burritos, she was unable to answer. After our order was taken, another server wanted to take our order. We told him we had just given our order. He came back again & insisted our order had not been taken & wanted to take our order. We insisted it had been taken & he should speak to our server. Paloma Cocktails were served in small Tom Collins glass with ice full to the top & seemed like a half a drink. We had to ask for silverware & napkins when our food was served. Nacho appetizer looked sad, like something a college student would make in a microwave. No appetizer plates were served with the nachos. Carne Azada dinner was served in a visually unappetizing way. No sharp knife was offered to cut the pieces of meat. Taste was not as good or even close to other carne asada meals we have had at other restaurants. Steak Fajitas meal does not come with sour cream & guacamole, although the $15.95 price is in line with other Mexican restaurants in the area that include these condiments. I've never ordered fajitas anywhere else that didn't serve sour cream & guac with their fajitas. No plate was given to eat the fajitas on, other than the coffee cup saucer that the tortillas were set on. More onions & peppers than meat on the skillet. This is a VERY Americanized Mexican restaurant. Food did not taste like it had any seasoning and was very bland. Floors looked like they need a GOOD scrubbing. Bathrooms were not clean. Love El Tequila Salsa. The owner Roy is very very friendly and personable. My friend and I went in for margaritas and they were great. The sour apple one isn't very sour, though. We made friends with Roy who gave us a shot of his last bottle of his tequila. It was very good. We also got chips and salsa. The salsa is a little on the spicier side compared to El Jalepenos, so it depends on what you prefer. The location is decent, the people are very friendly, and the atmosphere is great. The margaritas come in flavors like Blue Hawaiian, Pomegranite, Sour Apple, Sangria, Lime, Peach, Mango, Strawberry, Watermelon, etc. Lots of variety. read more

The drink special was $1.99 lime margeritas, so we promply ordered up four. Great drinks, not the best, but certainly no complaints. My wife and I shared the El Tequila fajitas (for two), Sis ordered a chili relleno chicken enchalada combo, and mom had a chalupa. Of-course these plates all came with your standard rice, beans, sour cream, guac, etc. Our fajitas were some of best we've ever had. Two seperate plates of rice and beans, as well as two sizziling plates of shrimp, chicken, steak and chorizo, peppers and onions. So much food we had trouble finishing it all. Also, chips were not refreshed and were not offered after the first basket was eaten. I know they would have been brought had I asked, but should I have to? I've had better "Mexican" food at a place called Mexican Cafe in Beijing, China. Also service was terribly slow and annoying. If I was to consider coming back they would need to vastly improve the quality of food as well as their service time. If quality is improved then I may come back, but not till then. It was a refreshing experience at El Tequila as compared to many of the other Mexican restaurants I have visited for years while traveling up here and been very disappointed with the food quality at almost all. The food here was very tasty, excellently prepared and portion size was perfect. The "House Best" margarita was, as advertised by many of the reviews on Yelp, very good with the right amount of tequila in it-- meaning I could actually taste the tequila. So many of the other Mexican restaurants I have tried up north are made very, very weak ... like drinking tart lime juice. Here, the one I ordered was very good and huge size. The only letdown in my meal was the guacamole, which presented well with decent sized portion.... but the guacamole itself was lifeless and pasty with zero flavor. Really disappointed as I love guacamole but they failed with it here. What they lacked in the guacamole quality they made up for with their salsa, which was very flavorful with the perfect spicy taste without having too much heat. Tortilla chips very good with nice body to them in that they did not easily break when eating the guacamole like so many cheap, thin chips will do.... The haddock fish tacos I ordered were excellent with a generous portion of the fish and perfectly sized with rice and garnishes for the tacos. Also, nice complimenting sauce to spread over the fish added a nice flavor to them. Highly recommend El Tequila as the food was very good, excellent wait staff and very comfortable setting to enjoy a lunch or dinner at. Well Done! read more

This place is amazing! It's hard to believe how good this Mexican food is for such a small town "up north". They have delicious salsa; more cilantro than most other places in town which gives it a little sometime extra. They have a very large variety of margarita flavors and other drinks to choose from. I absolutely love their fish tacos and the tostadas de ceviche (only served on Fridays). They have really authentic Mexican dishes as well as the standard American favorites. Great tasting healthy vegetarian choices. That's awesome for a Mexican restaurant! We ordered the vegetable soup instead of the tortillas and got a big bowl that we shared. We both ordered the Fajitas Verda, which were outstanding, with mushrooms, tomatoes, and no cheese. I added a $4 portion of grilled chicken breast for some protein and ate it all.
