I am here from out of town for work and decided to eat here. The food was pretty good. I had the chimichanga, it was ok. A little greasy for my taste. The chips were good and the salsa wasn't to bad, a little watery. The drinks were very well priced. Overall for the price it wasn't to bad, but probably won't make a point of revisiting. read more

We stopped in at 5:00pm on a Wednesday night with a handful of families from my daughter's softball team. There were 20 of us altogether. They did a great job of letting the girls sit at one table and the parents sit at another. Constant refills on chips, salsa, and drinks. But wow was the dinner service slow. I get it. 20 of us. We need to be patient. But it took over an hour to get our food. 30 minutes before orders were even taken. We weren't in a hurry so that is why I am giving 4 stars. Food was tasty. Great tasting healthy vegetarian choices. That's awesome for a Mexican restaurant! We ordered the vegetable soup instead of the tortillas and got a big bowl that we shared. We both ordered the Fajitas Verda, which were outstanding, with mushrooms, tomatoes, and no cheese. I added a $4 portion of grilled chicken breast for some protein and ate it all. The best in Wausau Rothschild area and one of the best in Wisconsin. I love Tex-mex and this place is a home run. Had combination steak tacos and my companion had tacos al pastor. Both were great. I don't like margaritas but these were even good. Their flan was simple but elegantly done with just a hint of cinnamon. Another home run. I can't recommend this place high enough. Roy is the consummate host! The entire restaurant is populated by very sweet people who truly care about their jobs. Truly authentic Mexican food, not common in northern Wisconsin. Don't be surprised if the owner Roy, comes up to you and shakes your hand. And he will remember your name. A great place for excellent food and good fun. And look for Pedro. My wife and I always stop here when in the area for a couple drinks and a cheese pig. The cheese pig is the Queso Fondito with steak and is amazing. I highly recommend. Service is always stellar and the prices are great. read more

I have been there 3 times now and have to say it gets better and better every time!! The beef chimichanga is the best I've ever had. The beef is shredded and tastes like it comes from best roast you've ever eaten. The fried shell is awesome that it comes in too. Tried the Fajitas el Trio which was to die for!! The shrimp tastes fresh, the steak was tender as well as the chicken, and the veggies were great. The salsa and chips are bottomless and delicious with fresh cilantro. My boyfriend had the pork tenderloin which he enjoyed. I couldn't stop eating the vegetables that came with his meal. They had a fresh garlic flavor. Yum! Also the Margaritas were very very good! I had banana which was NOT made with syrup as say the Margaritas from Tapatios are. Fresh Bananas!!! For 2 people we got out of there for $30.00 which included drinks from the bar!! The service is super slow every time we have been here. Slow to get our drinks, slow to take our orders and slow to bring the check. They have gotten our order wrong 2 out of the 4 times we've been here. We probably won't be going back. read more

This is a hard one for me to rate because I used to LOVE this place, but then I got food poisoning the last time I was there and haven't been back since. I always got the chicken chimichanga - my favorite! It was always delicious and I ate every bite. I'm not sure if the chicken was bad in the last one I had (it tasted fine) but I was VERY sick that night and all the next day. I was pretty bummed out that this happened because I haven't had a good chicken chimi since. I'd like to go back but afraid of getting sick again. read more

I really like this place because they are professional. I love the diverse staff. The menu is really tasty especially if you know what to order. If you just get something like a burrito you may not get the full range of food they offer. I always get the fish tacos with a side of avocado and red sauce. Delicious! I wouldn't normally give many places a five star rating, but El Tequila is by far our favorite restaurant in town. We have an almost two year old that sort of limits the options when it comes to dining out. El Tequila's atmosphere on Friday and Saturday night is perfect. The service is always quick and attentive. Most importantly their food is excellent. This place is perfect to get a quick bite, the food comes out in like 10-15 minutes max. If you want to sit and relax, eating chips and salsa, I recommend waiting to order. Either way, we seem to find our selves here at least once a month. read more

We live in Chicago, but come to the area a few times a year to ski at Granite Peak (about 2 miles away). Quite honestly, this is some of the best Mexican food we get to eat all year long. Every time we come to Wausau for the skiing, El tequila Salsa is a mandatory for my family. The cheese dip, the bean dip, the salsa, the shredded beef tacos, the fajitas, the margaritas, the spotted cow on tap, the service, the kids menu. It's all what the doctor ordered when it comes to enjoying a really delicious Mexican meal with your whole family. We show up in our ski clothes, fresh of the mountain. Nobody gives us a weird look. In fact, they even have a sign outside saying "Skiers Welcome." It would actually be smart of them to offer a free cheese dip to people who show them a valid lift ticket for that day. Maybe they should try putting that on their sign to see how much extra business it brings (not that they need it). The place is always full when we've been there. read more

The owner, Roy, introduced himself and clearly takes great pride in a great product. The seafood molcajete is on my short list of the best things I've ever eaten... made me wiggle in my seat it was so good! And can't forget the margaritas! Fabulous experience across the board. We both had the burrito California. Excellent. I tend to be so-so on sit-down Mexican food. I plowed through my burrito in no time though. We ate at the bar and our bartender Blake was exceptional. He was exactly as attentive as we needed and courteous as well. read more

Wow! In Wausau overnight and ended up at El Tequila based on the Yelp reviews. Were they spot on. Some of the best Mexican food. We had the guacamole, original margaritas (2 for 1) Tacos Carnitas, and Beef Chimi. Each was great! We even had a second round on the 'ritas! read more

This was our second visit to El Tequila Salsa and probably my last. Service was not attentive and slow. We ate on Cinco de Mayo at 3 to 4 PM. The dining room was less than half full. While the food was good it wasn't outstanding. The entrees were slow to arrive and were delivered by another staff member not our server. The Molcajete came without nopales as listed on the menu, instead large green onions were substituted which were both hard to cut (the outside layers being soft and slippery) and to eat. Having eaten this dish in Puerto Penasco, Mexico this version was dissappointing. My wife's flauta was burnt and she pushed her plate to the edge of the table. Since no one stopped by our table until well after we finished eating, we could only return it and ask that it be removed from our bill. My wife gestured to our server when visiting an adjoining table to take their order and thought she had gotten his attention, but our server walked away without acknowledging her. When the server came to ask if we were ready for our bill my wife asked to have the flauta removed from our bill and I asked for a take out container. My wife wanted to try their platano flameado described as sliced bananas with rum and orange juice, with ice cream and whipped cream and ordered it at this time. If this dessert was flamed it was done in the kitchen and the rum flavor was not evident nor was the whipped cream. Our server left the flauta on the table until he came back after a prolonged wait with another server who also looked at the flauta. Neither of them talked with us but our server removed the plate. Before our dessert was served another staff member came to clear the molcjete dish from the table. We asked again for a take out container. While waiting a person I presumed to be the manager stopped to clear the table. We again asked for a take out container. Three times the charm, the take out container was delivered by the third staff member after a considerable wait. This person then cleared our table. Shortly after clearing the table and the long interval since placing our dessert order I commented that we had waited long enough for our dessert and should just cancel it and get our check, shortly after our dessert arrived. But since our table had been now been cleared we had no utensils to eat it. After getting the attention of yet another staff member we got spoons to eat our now half melted icream and platanos. For the most part our server was nonexistant except to take our order and deliver our check (reflected in tip) The last time we ate here the service was spot on. So maybe it deserves another try, but it will be a long time before I might be willing to try again. read more

We went in with my mom who is gluten intolerant. We told them, explained it, they checked the ingredient list. We ordered according to what they said she could have, after my mom started eating someone came out and said, "can you have it if it is cooked?" This raised our level of concern. I even lived in Waukegan IL for a while which is mostly Hispanic. They did not have Mexican food which was this good. I was so surprised to find Mexican food this good in Wausau, WI. Their fajitas are yum. Their queso dip for their chips must contain illegal substances. It is that good. Make sure you ask for it when they bring the free chips. The service is at least ok. I never go there when I am in a hurry because they give you large portions, so you need time to digest and then eat more! read more

I have been here tons of times and usually it is a really great experience! Unfortunately, the past few times have been less than satisfactory and I fear this place is going downhill. Normally the food is excellent, but the past 3 times we went our order was wrong, cold and not very tasty.
