The service was amazingly fast. My husband and I shared the chile verde, which had very tender pork and a satisfying flavor.

The staff are very friendly! The restaurant is quaint and small. If you come in, I'd recommend the chicken ranchera, something with their shredded beef, guacamole and homemade salsa (delicious!). Sadly the chile rellenos and the tamales are frozen. The red sauce for the enchiladas and the refried beans taste canned. Just didn't have a great flavor overall-- it felt like the chef was not inspired or passionate. It was a bit pricey as well. I hope the chef can be reinvigorated. read more

We stopped in here while on a road trip that brought us into Burns. We searched for a local Mexican restaurant and decided on El Toreo. It's a little outdated looking but not terrible. We were seated quickly but the service overall was very slow. It took quite awhile for our server to come take our order and then a very long time to get our food served. We weren't in a big hurry so we waited patiently. In total we were in the restaurant about an hour and a half and most of that was just waiting. The food was ok. By far not the best Mexican food we've had but always not the worst. The fajitas were a little bland and the toppings platter was a little "old" looking. It was clearly not the freshest produce. It's not a place we'll likely cruise through to visit again but if you're in the area and craving Mexican food they have the basics here. read more

We love love this place. The food is wonderful a huge menu and if you like spicy the chili rellenos are phenomenal. They give you salsa and refried beans with your chips. Super clean to including tableware wrapped in sanitary plastic bags. NOW the best part is Adrian the bartender, server, efficient, polite and kind. Prices are great! Not the worst Mexican food we've ever had but definitely not the best, not really even close! First, the service was pretty slow and the two servers we had seemed unfamiliar with both the drinks and food. We asked a couple questions but didn't really get answers, it was weird! We ended up ordering basic combinations so we wouldn't be surprised! The chips and salsa were the best part! The rest of the food was pretty bland and flat with very little color or flavor. It was nice and hot though so that's a plus! Small portions left both of us a bit shy of full. If ever in the area again, we'd probably give it another try with different menu selections rather than the combinations. read more

We were traveling through and looking for a local restaurant to sit down and relax. El Toreo did not disappoint and was a great spot. The restaurant itself is unique with cozy booths that make it feel private. While we were there shortly after the lunch rush, it seemed very quiet. When it came to food, we were pleased with all our dishes. We ordered tacos, enchiladas, and tamales. The dishes were well seasoned. I was impressed by the meat to corn ratio on the tamales. Many times the corn masa is 90% of the tamal. This one hit the spot. Chips and salsa also came with refried beans. Delicious. Service was not overly quick but there were only a few people working. Stopped over in Hines for the night and came across this place for dinner on a Friday night. It was packed! A sign of good food. However they were down two servers so food service was a little slow, but the gentleman that served us was hustling and always with a smile on his face (got a good tip for that!). Happy service under pressure. I had the number 5 special of a tamale, enchilada, and a taco. Wow, was I impressed by the flavors! The beef was juicy and flavorful, the masa on the tamale was fresh and soft. The tamale was my favorite on the plate. We would definitely come back here again next time we are in town. read more

This is probably a 3.5 rating for me, and as an ex-teacher (judged as nice), I round up. So I was in Burns two consecutive nights, and made El Toreo my dinner choice both evenings. To summarize: the service is generally good, and the food is good, however not great. For example, the tacos al pastor consisted of very dried pork, and way too much lettuce, tomato (and cheese!). An okay meal, but could have been better. Tonight, I essentially did a sampler, that is to say, Combination #12. The chile relleno was very enjoyable, and the bean tostada lived up to expectations. the taco and enchilada were good. In the past, the mole has been very good. If the price point were just a little lower, and the service just a little more attentive to a single diner, I would be a little happier, however El Toreo remains one of my top choices in Burns. read more

The food is your basic Tex Mex I have never been so disrespected right off the bat anywhere in my life. I'm writing this at the end of my two week firefighting roll in Burns. I'll provide a short bit of context here. Much of this town resents firefighters. There's a strong anti-federal attitude. It is unfortunate that that gets passed on to the grunt firefighters but it is what it is. I am from Alabama, where people are generally more polite, and this was pretty wild for me. As soon as I walk in I get a sneer from who I assume to be the owner. He had a scar on the side of his head. I sit down and wait. Smile when he comes up. This was about 6:30 and I'm on call until 8:30. He points to my radio and says, "I like your walkie-talkie, I used to play cowboy when I was a kid too." I looked at him for a second but kind of laughed it off and said that yes it's my radio and I'm on call and I may have to leave quickly if there is an incident. He then asked me how much it cost. I realize at this point that there was no denying that he was just attacking me. I had felt some glares and seem some middle fingers in passing in this town but the gall of all that almost made me lose my cool. I called him over, politely "Sir, can I say something to you for a second." I told him that I do not like fighting wildfires. I'm much prefer prescribed fire in my home forests of the southeast. I heard that the West needed help so I threw my name into a hat and they told me to come to Burns. I came here to help. He kept interrupting me to talk about the walkie-talkie he had when he was a kid. It was a truly bizarre tactic. He kept saying wow you must have had a bad day huh. I pretended to be naive and say yes it's been a tough week and I'm sorry that I'm sensitive because I have felt so much resentment in this town when I'm just here to help. He backtracked but still had an attitude. I lived in Mexico for a few months and learned Spanish there and spoke with him a little bit to practice and to see if I could make a better connection. I ordered a dessert honestly as a test to see if he would comp it, is I would think most owners would if they were truly apologetic. He did not. I still left him a decent tip but I'm leaving you all a better one. Don't support this @$#&#×€ Little does he know I do not work for the federal government, or any government. My radio is expensive but not bought with tax dollars. Thank you to the people in this town who were appreciative of my coming here. I do not expect or want undue gratitude but to disrespect a first responder coming to help is just unthinkable to me. read more

It's ok, better than Taco Bell... The salsa they give you is in the smallest bowl ever. Dude, give with the salsa. You'd think after the 5th time we flag you down, you'd give us more than 5 chips worth... As for getting the attention of a waiter? Better bring a bullhorn. Once they give you your food, they disappear into thin air. Food? I've had better, but for a small country town, it was a'ight. Colorado wasn't the best, but the pork was good. Another visit to Hines/Burns while on our way to Boise, Grand Tetons, & Yellowstone (Jellystone!) National Park. This restaurant took advantage of my group of diners.5 ladies went to eat. It was a wait for menus a wait to order. Then a wait to get bills and pay. I am traveling home and Burns is about halfway. The hotel person told me that this restaurant had burritos. Perhaps burritos are different here than anywhere else, but meat wrapped in an open ended tortilla with gobs of runny sour cream and guacamole wasn't what I was expecting. When I originally called to place the order, the woman was very nice. When I called back to ask the $16 (for a burrito? Okay, small community, trying to help a small business...) be reversed because the 'burrito' was extremely lacking, I was told not to "get amped up". I hope this restaurant makes it with locals, but for travelers, if you're craving Mexican, find a Taco Bell. P.S. In the COVID climate it makes me heart sick to leave a negative review, but my experience was so poor that I want to advise other travelers so if they are also exhausted they aren't further taxed by this restaurant. read more
