The building itself is what you expect- it being an old building and set up. It's not fancy, a little run down, but it's clean. You have to take into consideration this is BURNS- it is such a small town that does not have a big population. They do not have the staff to turn out food quickly and food is also made to order. However, they handle being busy very well, and are very nice and genuine.. To note: If you're looking for something quick there are plenty of other options.. but also KEEP IN MIND ITS BURNS, nothing stays open past 8-10pm. So don't bank on eating a full meal if you come through here late at night, plan ahead. read more

Came here on Saturday of Memorial Day weekend at 7:15am and the place was packed. It's pretty small with maybe 10 tables and the diner staff seemed overwhelmed. But they handled the pulse fairly well and the wait to get our food was not long. 90% locals by my assessment. Old timers shooting the BS mostly. I have driven past this place thousands of times and never thought of stopping (mostly because it's Burns). This time we were in need of a sit down style breakfast place so we gave it a shot. They were open with us about the wait time (30-40 minutes) and we needed to take care of some animals that we had in the trailer anyway so we went with it. Easy four stars from this Yelper! You order when you go in and the menu is on the wall behind the cash register. The bacon was fantastic and had a sweet Smokey flavor to it and it was cooked perfectly, as were the eggs, hash browns and English muffin. Coffee was a bit weak and it took a bit to get our order, but we weren't in a hurry so not a game changer. On our vacation, we stopped off at this little hole in the wall off the highway and it was some of the most amazing food you could encounter. The weight was a little, but the food was made it worth it if you ever drive down this highway and find yourself in Burns Oregon you could do yourself justice by stopping off and getting some of their food. I had the avocado burger with onion rings, and the onion rings melted in your mouth so much for a wonderful lunch read more

Do not come here unless you think youll be hungry in an hour...and dont look up! We stopped here on our way to Idaho for breakfast. I wanted steak and eggs because I'm keto and can't have carbs (toast and hashbrowns) and was told that they were out of steak. The food took 1 hour to arrive. I understand being short staffed and food being made to order, but that is just bonkers. There was only 1 person ahead of us and their food took quite a while to arrive too. Both my husband and I asked for medium hard eggs and got over easy, my bacon was limp (but tasted good enough). I was too hungry to send it back. Sitting there for so long, I looked around and noticed water damage to part of the ceiling. 1 tile was missing and looked like it could have had mold up there. The overhead lights were packed with bugs, I'd assume that this restaurant doesn't get a deep cleaning very often. Now I understand why you have to prepay/tip. Cause we would have left after the 1/2 hour mark otherwise. The staff was nice enough, but that's not enough to make customers want to return. read more

Waiting for a tire repair, RJ's was recommended. I was grouchy about the tire and hungry and very skeptical. There were zero GF options listed on the menu and small towns like Burns do not often accommodate those of us who have a love/hate relationship with flour. I love flour and it hates me. Stopped yesterday, Mother's Day, and ordered a cheeseburger & fries at the outside "to-go" window. Placed order at 12:40 pm, asked staff twice when it might be ready. "Don't know," they said. Finally, when it still wasn't ready at 1:10 pm, I asked for my $12 back. ($10.95 meal + 1.05 tip.) The lady gave me the $10.95 and said "We're real busy." Traveling in the area and RJ's was recommended by a local for breakfast. Was a little hesitant at first look but very glad we started. Had breakfast which was a good cafe breakfast. While there the owner and her brother had a couple of very positive interactions with a couple of locals. I'm giving this place four stars, more based upon my overall impression, rather than the particulars of the actual food consumed here today. My wife and I travel through Burns, Oregon several times each year, and have been doing so for almost 25 years. We never stop for anything but gas, snacks, and an occasional meal. Since today was Memorial Day, the choices were limited, and we pulled right over when we saw RJ's was open. My wife had been here years ago, but this was my first visit here. When you walk in, you have the immediate feel that this is a local hangout, and not necessarily geared for the "grab-and-go" travelers like us. It seemed that most of the clientele were locals, and the place was pretty busy for the middle of the afternoon. Two good signs that this is a good place. The old-school menu board, the americana styled diner tables, and the smell of grilled burgers make you feel like you might be on the set for "Happy Days". I immediately fell in love with the place when I noticed that they had the little booklets at the table with ads for the local businesses, along with trivia to read while you are waiting for your meal, and also a few bad jokes in there too. Love it! My wife and I both ordered grilled ham and cheese sandwiches, and when we got them, it was as if Grandma had just cooked them up on the electric fry pan back at her house. The bread was buttery, and the ham and cheese tasted great. I did notice that they had a nice looking salad bar, that stocked with lots of great salad stuff, and was very clean. We didn't try any other traditional diner fare, since we were in a rush to get on the road to get back home, but I certainly would love to sample a burger & fries there. My wife said on her first visit there that the hamburgers where HUGE! The staff was friendly, and the overall restaurant was clean. All big plusses. Maybe someday we'll have time to sit for a while and enjoy a dinner in Burns, and we can swing by RJ's for something more substantial. The restaurant was exactly what I expect from a tiny town like this. So I'd offer 5 enthusiastic stars except that the biscuits I ordered were apparently popped from a pillsbury tin and were actually undercooked (doughy) or simply very soggy. Couldn't tell which. The omelet was good however. As for the gravy and chicken fried steak... the former was pretty bland (but better than half the gravies I've had) and the latter was generously proportions, cooked just right, and quite good. You won't find many alternatives if you're traveling through this area, but I'd say it's worth a stop anyhow. An example of the service here... we left a high end ski jacket at our table and didn't realize until bend. Great service! They have an extensive menu for the greasy bite. The self serve salad bar had no lettuce at the time and was a bit sparse but the food is the perfect greasy spoon. Filled with locals and travelers alike the wait can be a bit lengthy but the service never falters. They are prompt and friendly and have great advice if you are indecisive. Three choices of fries and a whole section of delightful burgers add to the menu. Great for families and especially stopping with the kiddos on a hot day! read more

The owners have changed and the quality has declined substantially. Avoid breakfast at all costs. We had eggs Benedict and biscuits and gravy with chorizo. Both meals came with hash whites. It was all very gross and tasted horrible. Gravy was weird and gross. The Hollandaise sauce was clumpy and very bad, obviously from a packet. The chorizo was overcooked, flavorless and hard to chew. The 50-minutes wait would have been okay had the food been of better quality and properly prepared. Sadly, there aren't any really great breakfast options in Burns, but the Truck Stop is by far the best in town.
