Definitely not much to choose from for breakfast in such a small town but The Apple Peddler is all they need! Not sure why all the bad reviews, perhaps disgruntled employees and their friends and family? Although old and outdated, with undesirable bathroom conditions, the food is fantastic diner breakfast quality! We ate there twice while staying at Crane Hot Springs and both times our eggs were cooked perfect, breakfast was hot, service was friendly and portions were plentiful. If the bathrooms were cleaned I'd have given 5 stars in the old diner category! I definitely recommend for breakfast and I'll be back! read more

We stopped in for a quick lunch on a Thursday afternoon. The menu was similar to what you'd find at a Sheri's or Denny's. It was clean and seemed to be recently remodeled. The hostess/server seemed kinda shocked/dismayed we were there, as there was only one other table occupied. The food, although wasn't 'bad,' was the very definition of mediocre. I tried the corned beef hash, two eggs and 3 pancakes. It looked like 3/4 a cup of hash smeared on the plate and two eggs - for $16.99. I know that is likely the going rate for what I got, but the presentation seemed so...pitiful? Maybe I'm just old, but it seemed like a $6.99 plate, at most. My daughter got the pork chop meal, which was already controversial as they apparently forgot they even had them in stock. We should have taken that as a sign to call it good and try some place else, but she went for it anyway. Two little overcooked medallions of pork later, we're done. They got a great establishment there. Just need to spruce up the food a bit. Otherwise, it kind of gives off a 55+ community cafeteria vibe. read more

Whelp... I really wanted to help this restaurant on out, and give a higher star rating... but I just could not bring myself to do it. We stopped for a breakfast. We had the pancakes with apple topping, bacon and scrambled eggs with cheese. The pancakes had no flavor, even when slathered with extra butter. I mean, butter makes everything better, right?!?!?! ...well, not this time. The bacon had a weird taste. ...not like bacon. And everyone likes bacon. But this was very odd tasting bacon. Who can mess up scrambled eggs? I mean, they are scrambled! Well these were hardly scrambled and just not quite right. The apple topping had no flavor. Just a pear like texture. Right next door to hotel. Sign on door said open until 8:00 (on a Friday night). As soon as we opened the door, a woman back inside yelled "we're closed, we close at 6:30". I feel bad for this place and I wish I could give it more than 2 stars, only because the people that work there seem good and considering the economy in this tiny, isolated town, where will they work when this restaurant closes; which it surely will in no time at all. The food was fine, I ordered a French dip and fries and my friend ordered the Asian chicken salad. Nothing was wrong except the egg that she was served with her salad was cooked to death. I'd say it was a good 25 minute egg. Gawd. The coffee was good. However, the restaurant is literally falling apart, there is no air conditioning and it's hands down the filthiest restaurant I've ever been in. If they would only give it a deep cleaning more people may come in which might give them enough money to replace the broken windows, stained ceiling tiles, air conditioner and whatever else is wrong. Honestly, I'd give this restaurant 2 months, maybe less. We're getting into the hot season and they don't have air conditioning. Wow.. Slow slow slow service. There was on other table of 3 people and one guy at the counter. If you are looking for a gourmet place to eat, you won't find it here. I'd almost hate to own a restaurant in a small town like Burns. Food here is middle of the road, and you can classify it in with Denny's, Carrow's and Perkins. I'm an iced-T lover, and I can usually tell how the meal is going to be by the taste of the tea they serve. If it comes to the table fresh tasting, then the meal will at least be decent. If it comes to the table with that stale-haven't-cleaned-the-pot-in-weeks taste, then I can surely bet the meal will, well, suck. I got good Iced Tea, and the Chicken Fried Steak was actually not a hockey puck that I could cut with only my fork. Mashed potatoes were the processed kind you would expect to find and definately not hand mashed onsite. The salad was crisp and fresh as well. Only thing I wasn't all that crazy over was the mixed vegetable that came with my meal. I like Veggies, these just weren't my cup of tea. There was one waitress working tonight. Again, small town...may have people...may not. I have to give her good kudos for keeping up with everyone that came in during my visit. We were traveling and it was dinner time, so we decided to stop into the Apple Peddler. The decor was okay, the waitress was friendly, the menu had a good selection. My husband and I are seniors so we ordered off the Senior Citizens menu, and our grandson off the kids menu. I ordered the fish & Chips with a side of coleslaw, the fish was straight out of a box, the fries were cold and the coleslaw was brown......my husband ordered the pork chop mashed potatoes, corn and gravy, they should have called the pork chop a pork chop, I didn't think you could slice a pork chop that thin, it was so think it was curled, the mashed potatoes were instant, the corn was tough and tasteless, kind of like you would get from field corn, Not Sweet corn, the gravy was not bad. Our grandson ordered cheese pizza, I'll just say it was weird, it was a small personal pizza. It was round, and under a ton of cheddar cheese there was what looked like a red sauce, the crust looked like a quiche. The waitress had disappeared so my husband went up to pay the tab, the man at the register asked how the meowed my husband responded " less than mediocre ", he just ignored the response and said that will be $31.14. Saw the low reviews for the AP but we tried it for breakfast anyway while on a road trip from Bend to Phoenix, so glad we did! We all loved our food which came out hot, fresh and delicious. Our server, Star, was working by herself but still did an amazing job. I only gave four stars because the actual building, although it was clean, is overdue for a remodel. If I could sum up our semi-traumatic experience dining at this place in one phrase, it would be: "teeth not necessary!" Not sure exactly who the mush served here is intended for (anteaters, maybe?), but I'm pretty sure a straw is a necessary utensil. We stopped here mid road trip for some Christmas dinner. We ordered the advertised ham dinner as their holiday special. I would instead rename it: "A Holiday Exploration of Culinary Textures." It started off with week-old bagged iceberg lettuce with a few croutons, served with a side of chunky ranch. That's right, chunky ranch. "Is that blue cheese?" we wondered. "Is that moldy?" It looked like ranch, smelled like ranch, and tasted like ranch. We never did figure out the source of those strange textural surprises. Next we received the main dish. We were expecting a ham steak, which at some point during the cooking process I'm sure was feasible, but what we were served instead was something well beyond that point. It was more along the lines of a (whoops!) pulled ham hock. It was accompanied with what was possibly once a warm brown sugar glaze, instead used as a dipping sauce and cooled enough to allow for the sugar to recrystallize, adding a nice textural crunch. However, the most intriguing part of the meal was the broccoli casserole. Reminiscent of a mix between broccoli cheese soup and unbaked bread dough, we concluded this "casserole" was the coalescence of leftover broccoli cheese soup stirred into an excessive amount of roux. What resulted was a barely cohesive dish comprised of an oily and curdled cheesy dough with mushy broccoli bits. Lastly, we ordered a banana cream pie, likely intended for dual use as a dessert and an all-purpose home renovation plaster. Service was decent, though. read more

And that's totally fine if they want to serve bland food for octogenarians, just put it on the sign or on the cover of the menu so people that are passing through know what to expect. Eating here was a mistake. Want waffles? Nope waffle maker is broken. Want a baked potato? Nope, they didn't make any. Want fish and chips? Nope, no fish. Order a ceasar salad with your meal and you get wilted lettuce soaked in dressing. Inedible. $2.75 cup of coffee that will not be refilled. Welcome to the Apple Peddler. The sign out front should have told us to keep on driving by but since we ate here years ago, and it was good, we thought we would stop by again. Friday night 7:12 only one waitress for the entire restaurant also working as bus boy and hostess. Decided to try the southwestern omelet, apple pancakes and dinner option of chicken fried steak. Salad with dinner item came out with salad and vegetables that seemed more than a day past their peak of freshness. See photos Apple pancakes were abundant in apples and crisp and the pancakes were good 7/10 Southwestern Omelette, onions were pungent, and in many cases raw. As the diner mentioned, "This is probably the worst omelette I've ever had." 2/10 Chicken fried steak lathered in gravy but overall what I expected. 6/10 Staff was very friendly and personable and offered tips on road conditions. Food was delivered in 26 minutes from placing our order. Unfortunately this isn't the same quality we experienced in the past. We won't be back. read more

I looked for a restaurant as I was traveling. I Love a mom and pop restaurant and saw the Apple Peddler, looked at the menu on Yelp and the Fajita salad sounded good. There was seating inside, opened at 50% capacity due to COVID-19. The staff was friendly (the only reason for two stars). The restaurant had a ton of dusty fake plants and flowers. Dust everywhere and just looked like it needed a deep clean. The food was terrible... the Fajita salad was supposed to have fried shell--nope, no shell. A pile of iceberg lettuce and an embarrassingly small amount of chicken--about 6 pinky sized pieces of dry, I spiced chicken, less than half a chicken breast. A tiny container of salsa and sour cream. What? Not a $13 salad. I wanted to simply refuse it but the waitress took it off the bill. (Again the only reason for 2 stars) had the $13 Colossal Chicken sandwich also, intending to take some food to go but there nothing colossal about it. It was a tiny, wet, greasy mess! Also the fries were a tiny portion of frozen crinkle cut fries. I'd think a mom and pop would make their own fries and be generous with them--nope. The waitress was quite snippy and defiant and said the ad was a coupon. Nothing on the ad said it was a coupon. She refused to comply with the ad. We will not be going back. I decided to stop here when I was staying in Hines, because it occurred to me that I hadn't been here yet, and how bad could it be? I like diner food in general and I'm not super fussy. Well. I suppose I'd give the place another star if the waitress had been more pleasant. First I was ignored - fine, not in a hurry - then when I started looking around, someone finally came along. Now, I don't need fawning service, but it would be nice if I at least got a drink refill instead of her just dropping the food and the check at the same time then disappearing. Oh, but not before I asked about pie, and was told that they didn't have the kind I wanted - even though it was hand-written on the chalkboard in front. As for the food, the chicken noodle soup was good. Fries were fine, but the chicken bacon ranch wrap was drowning in ranch dressing, ridiculously so. I had had a chicken wrap the day before at the Bella Java place in town, and that was really good and fresh-tasting, so this was made all the worse in comparison. His meal cost 9.99 two eggs, hash browns, toast, and a steak (cooked perfectly). Now that's a deal! I got the patty melt and it was juicy and delicious. Chopped pickles, grilled onions, and added a bit of salt to my taste. Really yummy. Perfect if you want a burger but know you won't finish a regular one. Potato salad was potato salad. Classic. The fries came out hot, crispy, and fluffy. Good fries. Nicely done. Our waitress was awesome. I read a yelp/google review that mentioned a waitress here looked like she was on drugs. I'm pretty sure that that yelper was referring to our waitress (for obvious reasons) and YOU are an asshole. Some people do recover and have issues from their past drug use. F*ck you for being so judgmental. She's working an honest job and none of us know her personally. She was a very sweet and attentive waitress and checked on us numerous times and was very helpful with the menu. Shame on you for judging her and shame on the rest of you whiners! With the bad reviews, we were apprehensive to come here. Food and service were great however it was a little slow. We did notice only two waitresses for a pretty big dinner crowd. The host was kind of a lug. Needs better customer service skills. Seemed like he was angry or bitter about having to be there. Waitress still hasn't brought our check. Truthfully, restaurant is a word connected with The Apple Peddler only in that food or things resembling food, are served at tables with places to sit. If you imagine previous reviews of this establishment to perhaps be critical because the diners were petty or mean, you may find their judgement revealed in a frightening avalanche of truth if you choose to dine in this cafe of culinary horror. Nothing ... in previous reviews is inaccurate with regard to the sheer absence of ability or desire ... to prepare food to be served. Forewarned, we drove to The Peddler on a summer Saturday night, out of desperation. Burns' other choices were undesirable for us. Surf and Turf for me, French Toast for my lady. How could you besmirch steak and frozen seafood ... how could you malign French Toast? But! We were not long to find out! The magician chef ... visible over a counter ... found ways! The steak was all right. Without doubt it had been part of a cow, and was cooked in an agreeable fashion. There were canned green beans and a baked potato. It was at this point that any resemblance of quality departed! I have forgotten the salad! Did I mention the salad? No. The meal came with a simple dinner salad which would have been just fine ... if it hadn't been made 24 hours earlier. It was iceberg lettuce ... rendered nearly translucent by hours of waiting. A solitary carrot stick lay languishing atop this sad pile, its edges turning white with dehydration. The dressing was a white grease with dark specks. The otherwise edible steak was served on top of a "bed" ... I lack adequate description here ... a "thick flat lump," of something ... which we think ... may have once been potatoes. The result was comical. It had the appearance of a prop in a Slapstick Comedy. Otherwise it was repulsive. But let us not forget The Turf. Beside the frightful mystery patty holding up my steak, was an assortment of extremely dark ... brown ... objects. Four of these might have been those famous inventions of American ingenuity ... Tater Tots ... but examination proved this not true! Much too hard to be a Tater Tot, the brown shell of annealed grease and breading flour, hardened nearly to ceramic by a volcanic stay in the deep fryer, yielded. Inside, was what had been a scallop. Three breaded shrimp accompanied the poor scallops ... flattened and fired to a textured porcelain like their companions, there was no reason to eat them. They had suffered enough. It is sad to think anyone would support a business run like this one. But I am reminded of the French Toast. How ... you may ask ... could you fail in the preparation of this simple and often elegant use of bread? This is explained as we observe only one man, in the kitchen. And were this man cooking instead in a prison ... he would no doubt be in great danger ... since certainly convicts would soon exact revenge against the architect of meals so awful. This man created in his vast cooking ignorance, French Toast which tasted like cardboard ... but lacked its structural continuity ... manifesting as rectangles of gathered mush. Accompanying this were pieces of bacon as flat, connected, and hard as asphalt floor tile. We asked if we might have a replacement ... and it was graciously replaced with a duplicate so exact as to defy understanding. I've provided some pictures. Then the food was just OK, nothing seemed fresh just frozen heat up sort of deal, and the hashbrowns were so oily even my kids would not eat it. The chemistry on the soda was off and we were never offered refills on our drinks. The bathrooms were dirty, and the staff was way more into each other then the guests.
