I've been coming to El Torero since I was a child, and I have to say it's sad to see how much the quality has declined in every area of this restaurant. The food gets more expensive and doesn't taste as good as it used to. The service is terrible and rude. The last time I picked up an order, they forgot to give me a meal I had ordered, and when I called to get it fixed, the employee insisted he had given me the missing items and refused to help in any way, implying that I was lying for some reason. They will not be getting my business again. Shame on them for blaming customers for their mistakes. I also have heard from a reliable source that they refill their salsa containers with salsa they have already served. Steer clear of this place! read more

I ordered a shredded chicken chimichanga and received a shrimp chimichanga, by the time the waitress came back to the table to ask how the food was, my boyfriend was already finished with his meal. I showed the server that I got shrimp instead of shredded chicken and since my boyfriend was already finished with his food could she please just take it off of the bill completely since we're ready to leave. All she did was repeat that I got shrimp and then said "No, let me change it" and then proceeded to take my plate, along with my fork, away and came back with another chimichanga. I asked for a to-go box because we were ready to leave at this point. We waited about 7-10 minutes until another waitress brought us a to-go container, and then a couple minutes later our original waitress gave us the bill and took our plates. So I did not have silverware to check if the new chimichanga was even chicken, and by the time we got our to-go boxes and check it was cold. Not coming back here again, the last few times have been poor food and poor service and this was the straw that broke the camels back. I'll stick to Jackson El Toreros from now on! read more

I LOVE the fact that this place has a lunch buffet. They have a wide variety of items on their buffet. The place had plenty of space and plenty of parking outside. The restaurant was clean and the service was great. They also have a regular menu with a nice selection if you're not up for the buffet. The food was good, but wasn't anything over the top. I wish this place hadn't gone down so badly, it was our favorite, we are long time customers, but after several to-go orders being wrong, we are choosing not to come back. The food for the most part is good, although they have changed the recipe of their cheese dip and it's terrible. They're also very very stingy with their chips and salsa, you would think they would appreciate long time, repetitive customers, but they do not value their customers. It's sad. read more

If you come to Cape Girardeau, El Torero's is a go to. I believe it was the first Mexican style restaurant here. I have been ordering vegetarian lately and they have a lot of choices. Vegetarian food is hard to find here so I've been here more often lately. Drink specials are abundant and tasty with the overall food prices kept low. This makes this place a local favorite. They have recently remodeled and put in a buffet, something new for Cape Girardeau. Salsa is consistent and the chips are great. You simply can't go wrong here. If you smoke (I Don't) they still have a smoking section. They have many other restaurants in Southeast Missouri, this was their first. A real success story for this family owned business. read more

Then, she came back to take our order, but I'd never been here before and we weren't given menus. So. 15 min later she comes back to get our order. Meanwhile a couple who came in the same time as us was done and leaving. Another table who came in after us, and had more in their party got their food. Mine and my sons food came out. After a good 10 min, I had to flag someone down because my daughter still didn't have her food. No drink refills, no follow up. The cashier didn't smile or say a single word. I was very unimpressed with the customer service. If I had gone to the restroom before I had ordered my food, I would have left. Disgusting. Finger prints all over the doors. This place is absurd. We ordered guacamole. You know, the stuff made from avocado? Not here. It was literally squashed banana dyed green! Everyone at our table agreed. The consistency wasn't even the same as avocado. This is ridiculous. They sold us a lie and it didn't even taste good. What if someone had had a banana allergy? I hate this restaurant. Best chicken soup I've ever had in my life. It's the freshest dish you can order. It does take longer than all of the other menu items, but it's well worth the wait. One portion is good for two meals. Take the rest to go, or order for take out and freeze it for a rainy day. It's a bit spicy... so if you don't like cumin tickling your tonsils, I'd advice to order without the pico de gallo. Quick tip: There are 20 different guacamoles to choose from. GET THE MEXICAN GUAC. Great lunch buffet but one steam table was under temp so the food from that table was cool. Excellent tamales and grilled pork. Dana, our waitress, was outstanding! Me and my father used to go there weekly and it was always really good but the past few times we have went there the service has been AWEFUL. Tonight we went in and waited for our drink order for about 10 minutes even though the resturaunt was dead. There were servers standing around talking while we were waiting for service. When the server finally took our order he was very rude and sarcastic. My father asked for another beverage and instead of bringing him one the server gave us our ticket and ignored us the rest of the time. He acted like we were a pain in the butt for coming in and it wasn't even busy. I have worked in food service for ten years. I am very lenient with food service workers but this was completely unexcusable. read more

If I want Mexican food and am in Cape I will go back to El Toreo. I had the Steak Chimichanga and it was incredibly good! I sat at the bar and the bartender was quick and friendly. The beer and food was super cheap too especially for the copious portions they were serving out. My only complaint was that I thought the guacamole was under seasoned, and the food wasn't as spicy as I like it but that is also personal preference. read more

AWFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE. I am usually able to forgive the long wait, multiple mess ups, and bringing dishes out twice but it was the customer service amidst it all that was horrendous. Simple requests were forgotten (no biggie, they were busy, I undersatand) but one should not have to ask multiple times to get it corrected or to feel that they are being a nuisance. We were here for a birthday dinner with about twenty people and almost unanimously agree we won't be back. I will gladly drive a little further across town to El Acapulco. Had multiple drinks and two meals charged to our bill that did not belong to us . We also were not made aware that checks would not be split (had to sort out a $300 bill at the register) amongst twenty some people, which made catching these mistakes even harder. In fact the last person to pay was told someone in our group must have "dined and dashed" and we would not be allowed to leave until they came back or we paid for it. Talk about embarassing. After a few words with a very rude cashier, and an embarassing scene, they allowed us to leave. read more
