Prices are high and the food is not as good as other Mexican Restaurants around. Scottsboro AL has a few good ones. About 40 minutes away. Or Lemons in Hennegar AL is the most popular one. A hidden gem near a truck stop! El Toril boasts a large menu with a variety of options and combination platters. The chips are fresh and perfectly crunchy. The guacamole, salsa, and queso are very tasty! They serve a variety of large drinks including huge margaritas and a variety of beers. For my entree I chose a combination platter. The tostada was wholesome and stacked, but became soggy with the queso on my plate. The beef taco was well seasoned and the enchilada was yummy. I will be back! read more

I've made this a regular stop on my commute. I order the same thing - lost Cabo's (I think that's the name) grilled fish, shrimp & beans. I've ordered this dish about 5 times. When they're busy the fish and shrimp are overcooked. When they're not busy busy it's absolutely delicious. Another odd thing- you only get one napkin. I'm sure I could ask for more but leave an extra or have some on the table. Still recommend the dish but try it when they're not busy. read more

The entire place was dirty and that made it worse when the hostess dropped silverware on the floor and then set it on the table.I asked for another set and she rolled her eyes at me and didn't bring one until I asked again.The server didn't write anything down,which is a great skill to have,except that 2 out of 6 orders were wrong.When he brought mine back,still wrong, I was told "the cook wants to make it this way".As we were leaving,my cousin overheard some servers talking.They must have assumed she didn't speak Spanish,as they were making jokes about her husband's height and size. read more

We popped into town to visit for the Cornbread Festival and wanted to grab a bite to eat before we made the journey back to Birmingam. A native friend suggested El Toril for a quick lunch. It was easy enough to find, located in the Wal-Mart shopping center right next to Goodwill. Upon entering we were greeted and seated rather quickly by a gentleman at the host stand. The only thing I found odd about the restaurant was the country music playing on the speakers rather than the typical Hispanic fanfare. Weird, right? Anyway, after we were seated a random woman came by and dropped off our chips and salsa which were of course free. She gave us two small bowls and a small plastic carafe of salsa. The salsa was surprisingly plesant. The tomatoes were thoroughly smashed and well seasoned. It has a slightly sweet finish which I really appreciated. Not long after, our waiter arrived to take our order. I opted for water with what I thought would be queso with chorizo and an avocado pico de gallo. The avocado pico was really refreshing. My only two critiques are that it had way too much lime juice and wasn't cut up very well. The queso wasn't queso at all but was a TON of chorizo with a bit of cheese all in a got plate with a few tortillas. It was a surprise but I love chorizo so I can dig it. To comment of the service, it was okay. After we received our food we didn't see the waiter much. Which was REALLY a bother when we needed our drinks refilled. As far as "Mexican" restauarants go this place is okay. It's your garden variety small town Mexican restaurant executed in a very mediocre way. We stopped in on a Friday night on our way to Chattanooga. Having experienced quite a few different Mexican restaurants over the years, we were excited to give a new one a try. There was a line to be seated and we waited patiently. Then once we were sat, it was clear the server was busy so we waited patiently. It took 50 minutes for our food to come out though and that was super frustrating since we wanted to be in town at a decent hour. It took forever for the server to drop off the check too. I was ready to take-off and resorted to just leaving some cash on the table and hoping my estimate was accurate. If the food was exceptional, I wouldn't give it two stars. I order pork tips in salsa verde and the portion was WAY too small for the price of the plate. I've worked in kitchens for the past ten years and portion size shouldn't be a problem if you know the ticket time is above 30 minutes, much less closer to an hour. Anyway, I do not recommend.
