At my follow up, I told Dr. Rullan that I was really happy with my results and did not need any additional injections. We briefly discussed possibly doing a peel or laser in the future, and I told them I needed to look at my schedule and would get back to them. When I went to check out, I was surprised when I was told the visit would be $130. I explained that I had not been told there would be a charge for the three week follow up and that, had I known, I would not have scheduled the appointment because I was already happy with my results. This was especially confusing because my initial consultation had been complimentary and I had paid $130 for the injections themselves. Dr. Rullan kindly came over and waived the fee, and I apologized for the misunderstanding. Unfortunately, what happened afterward left me feeling incredibly humiliated. Mary, the office manager, told me, "You don't go out to eat without paying, do you?" She told me that the doctor's time is valuable, that a consultation or even asking a question about a procedure is a $130 fee, and that I was no longer welcome back. I completely understand that a physician's time is valuable, and I have no problem paying fees that are communicated to me beforehand. My issue was never about expecting a doctor's time for free. I simply was not aware that the follow up I had been instructed to schedule would cost another $130. I had actually been very happy with Dr. Rullan and was considering returning for a peel or laser treatment, which makes the way this interaction ended even more disappointing. Dr. Elizabeth could've been more empathetic, understanding the challenges of struggling with a condition that feels almost like a deadend. Instead, she said "We can just talk about your acne because we don't have much time left in your visit."
