This is a review specifically for the Coronado office. I'm not sure what's going on here. My journey with them started out rough. I recently went to get a disgusting skin tag removed that I was so happy to hear that dermatology institute did this on a cash basis since my insurance had a 6-8 month waitlist , I couldn't wait . Quickly I started researching and came across Dermatology institute I know it's not covered by insurance since this is considered cosmetic , I just wanted it gone and felt the price was reasonable . I saw Dr. McKesey ,as soon as she walked in the door her energy and personality was amazing . What a joy to have her as my first office visit . I will be back maybe for some other services . I'd like to add a few tips before you head to this office The parking is meter around the office so bring your quarters The building states the office is on the second floor on directory . I went to 2nd floor and their was no sign on office door saying go to third floor . I waited 30 min outside until I called office and they said we are 3rd floor maybe this is a recent change Double check and ask questions on fees just for your own sake . This facility needs to replace EVERYONE who works at the front desk because none of them know what is going on or how to properly schedule patients. I have been prescribed acutane and the government requires you to come in exactly every 30 days in order to get a new 30 day supply. Well I had my appointment and had to reschedule it's few days later. when I called to reschedule, I let the person who answered know that I was on acutane and wanted to make sure I was allowed to reschedule my appointment. They confirmed yes. I asked again multiple times and they confirmed. Guess what, when I went in for appointment today the doctor told me "sorry since you didn't come at 30 days, you have been kicked out the program so I can't give you a new 30 day supply. You will have to sign up again for the program and come back in 30 days for a new prescription" ARE YOU SERIOUS?! can't express how mad I am that I will now regress for 30 days and all my acne will return read more

Please please please try and properly train your front staff. As a new patient it was a nightmare. Scheduling coordinator I spoke with first had no idea as to what insurances were accepted. Took all my information down, & said I would get a call back from him to confirm on insurance. I was given an appt date and time as well. Told to arrive 45 min before my 0800 appt to fill out NP paperwork. He did call back why was appreciated but I was in a meeting. The call was to confirm my DOB as he forgot. I called back and spoke with another scheduling coordinator who took down info requested. Never received a call. Although he was not rude he had no clue what he was doing and I tried my best to be patient as we are all new at one point. (I hope this was the case.) Weekend passed nothing so I called Wednesday to find out I wasn't scheduled or even entered in the system. No big deal, it was a holiday weekend and I work in the medical industry & wanted to be understanding. Gave all my info once again, I was told since I had an HMO my insurance needed to be verified since initially the first time around they never got back. Great, understandable but I explained I had a PPO. So I was scheduled. Awesome, finally. Day does by and I get a call from office telling me I was over booked and appt needed to be rescheduled. Mind you I already requested morning off from work. I decided to CX all together as it was one after another just to schedule an appt. We're human, I get it but from being very excited to be a treating patient I ended up being frustrated. We make mistakes, we're all learning but it shouldn't take this long to make an appt. The front office is the face of a clinic. Any establishment at that. There is no reason why anyone should be thrown on a phone to complete job duties they're unsure of. Confidence is very important and if more training is required to make either F2F or phone contact more pleasant please consider it. 2 stars are for the initial coordinator actually being polite on the first call despite the lack of knowledge to the office. read more

Not only is Dr. Peter Rullan a very talented aesthetic eye, he is also a very kind and caring man who truly wants to improve your skin. I have seen Dr. Rullan three times. The first time I went I purchased a package that included subcision, filler, TCA cross and laser treatment. I believe he calls it the Quattro treatment. I had very significant improvements in my skin. It really helped my confidence. I saw him again for the same package and then twice to refill the filler in my acne scars. The packages are reasonably priced, he does not price gouge you. He has so much experience and has had a hand in inventing some of the treatments derms use across the country, if not outright inventing them himself (phenol peel). The entire staff from the office to assistants are so nice and courteous. From my past experiences with other Dr. offices who just want your money and get you in and out well let me tell you this great facility of awesome professionals is entirely different. I had to have several procedures done to eliminate a large tumor/abscess and minor cosmetic work. The entire experience went flawlessly. I have been a professional athlete my entire life and it had been over 15 years without having to go to any doctor so I was scared to death to see one. I do not always trust doctors or hospitals. I had been suffering with excruciating pain for almost a year (kept procrastinating) and I am telling you going to see Dr. Rullan was like a miracle and my life being given back to me. You have no idea. I thought I was going to be out for months longer, but what Dr. Rullan was able to do for me in such a short amount of time was a true blessing. The entire process only took about 6-7 weeks of treatments/procedures and was nearly painless. With Dr. Rullan's extreme knowledge in a seemingly complex dermatology field he was able to completely eliminate a nearly 3 inch by 3 inch growth in a very private area with basically very minor painless surgery. I went from pain and constant bleeding thinking there was no hope to healed in no time. I do not want to go into all the details because somewhat gruesome, but the outcome was just remarkable. I would trust this man with my life and will always go back to him. Now I know why he is known as one of the top 1% most respected caring doctors in the country. Anyone who is fortunate to be seen by Dr. Rullan should be thankful. He is extremely busy with a vast amount of clients yet the staff did whatever they could to always make sure I was able to be seen in a rather short amount of time on several occasions. I have been a patient here since 2014 - for medical and cosmetic derm needs. the last two times, Dr J Rullan injected juvederm she used the cannula method. Making it hard to see which part of the lip, the product is actually filling. the result is that the product DOES NOT get injected where it should. it goes underneath the lip, causing your lips to still look thin from the front but from the side make it look pouty. It looked like a blister underneath my lips. it was painful and unsightly. I noticed it right after she injected and she insisted it was fine. it will move into place with massage and time. I came back few days later and showed her again. she agreed to "fix it" but then charged me an additional $100. but fixing it, made it worse. Instead of being receptive because you can visibly see it was messed up and later she commented "I don't want to be associated with that lip job." Then why charge me extra and then take offense and say "I think we should end our doctor patient relationship" (in a demeaning way)? It made me cry. nobody likes to be that complaining patient. its not like I was asking for more fillers, I was asking her to dissolve it the botched job she did. but she didn't want to help. So then I wrote a bad review. The office manager reached out, and I agreed to take down my post on terms that the Dr dissolve the product that went in the wrong places so I can get a refund. She "dissolved" the top lip (incompletely) but didn't dissolve the bottom lip even though it was irregular and lumpy and uneven on the bottom too. And her comment was that it was fine and the product to dissolve was more expensive than the filler itself. and for me to wait. So I waited a few weeks. still lumpy and uneven. The office manager said, wait more. So I waited over a month. and still the same result. She was dismissive with how irregular it still looked and wasn't willing to dissolve my bottom lip or the rest of my top lip. They didn't keep their end of the bargain and had me wait for months (almost 2 months now) to get some kind of answer. I made an Appt with another medical spa in Hillcrest (reputable lip injector). The second she saw my lips she was like "oh no, that's uneven you need to go back to where you had it done." I told her I couldn't because the doctor keeps saying it looks fine. And her response "oh no no no honey, let me take a picture for you in this lighting and you tell her to dissolve it." This person said it would cost $400 but even if I paid, she wouldn't do the job because she doesn't know what it was actually filled with and doesn't feel comfortable doing the job of dissolving. Same comment from another injector in Chula Vista. Finally, I found someone in San Marcos that would dissolve it. it cost me few hundred dollars out of my pocket to dissolve the work Jennifer rullan did. I told this injector what Jennifer rullan told me also. And she said "what do you mean, she can't see it (bottom lip), its shiny and bulging." DO NOT do the cannula method of lip injections on your lips. big mistake! And be weary coming here because the second you complain or give negative feedback, they will cut you off as a customer/patient. They just want your money. I am suffering from depression with the roller scars and laser burns on my skin.. they don't even call to check up on you after surgery. The second surgery gave me more scars. However, over the past year or so, I've been contacted 3 times by their office requesting more money for the visit. I don't get it. I pay in full before leaving at each visit. Is it a scam for any of the specials advertised? Is it poor training of the receptionist ? Is it bad accounting in the admin department? Often the reason behind the extra charge doesn't even make mathematical sense. I want to love this place and not be wary. Dr Brown and Dr. Jennifer Rullan are great. I was frustrated with my acne and the unevenness of my skin. It's been two years and my skin feels amazing. I rarely get any pimples and i am so much more comfortable leaving the house without make up. They also worked to find me medication that didn't just work but were affordable. I recommend getting a salicylic peel if they recommend it. They also have some pads that you can buy. I use them every other day. I will not recommend this place to friends and family. Waiting an hour to be seen by the doctor on my first appt should've been a big indicator. I came back for a facial thinking it would be beneficial considering it is a dermatologist office. I paid $195 for a microdermabrasion facial that was supposed to last an hour...only lasted 45 min. When I was paying I noticed it had not lasted an hour so I mentioned it to the girl checking me out to which she responded "if she is done before the hour then she's done". The esthetician did not ask me a single question about my skin. The water she used to cleanse my skin with was cold. Anyway, all around a bad experience. Oh and it took them 15 min to get me in to see the esthetician. Probably would've been longer had I not said something. Dr. Jennifer Rullan is arrogant and over confident; the worst kind of health care professional. My daughter has seen multiple top tier derms in the past 17 years. Never have I dealt with someone who had such little interest in my daughters individual situation. She didn't ask much about her background or lifestyle. She tried pushing for my teen to receive some type of pharmaceutical injection every 2 weeks. When I mentioned I would review the research, no previous Derm had recommended such a thing, she was clearly offended. As a healthcare provider myself, I encourage all my patients to become well informed. It's a red flag if your provider has a big ego and discourages this. She encouraged my daughter to take melatonin because, "...in the US we don't produce enough." I'm assuming this was her clumsy way of referring to the fact that our circadian rhythms have been disrupted due to artificial lights and devices. Little does she know, we are obsessive over maintaining a very healthy circadian rhythm- exposing ourselves to natural sunlight and physical activity in the morning, turning lights low and below eye level in the evenings, etc.; my teen doesn't need to take exogenous melatonin. My daughter was seeing a great dermatologist in Orange County before moving back to San Diego. Looks like we're just going to have to make the longer drives for better care. read more
