Maple curry drummies, collard greens, and Mac and cheese
    Zakia C.

I had my boyfriend to pick up some food for me today. I got the maple curry drummies, collard greens, and regular Mac and Cheese. It was just OK. Nothing really stood out to me, and the food was a bit bland. I'd give it a 5/10. Also, the website menu needs to be fixed. It only has very vague information like 2 sides meal, 1 entree with 2 sides, but it doesn't show you what the options are to choose from.

I love visiting ELife so much! This black owned business is such a treasure in Takoma Park. When you walk inside Elife you can see there are plenty of tables available for indoor dining, and the interior is very clean and tidy. Then you bask in the glory of an endless buffet of vegan food. From meatless chicken drummies, to fried "fish", to casseroles, Mac and cheese, and plenty of greens you are in awe of the variety of plant based dishes. In addition to the hot and ready food, you can also order sandwiches from them. I have not yet tried a sandwich because the Mac and cheese and faux meats are so hard to pass up. They have two different Mac and cheeses. I prefer the cashew based one since it is smoky, however their other Mac and cheese is reminiscent of your favorite childhood Mac and cheese. I am a sucker for those chicken drummies too. They offer them in a few different sauces, and Buffalo is my favorite because it is spicy. This meat is perfect for those that want to replace chicken in their diet as it is chewy and stringy like the real thing. ELife also has shelves of vegan dessert! They have many different cake slices to pick from. I have only tried the carrot cake which was definitely worth the calories. For those opting for a healthier sweet option, they also have a fridge full of juices. I hope you will show this black owned business some love. If you are ever to try a vegan meal, you cannot go wrong with anything on their menu. You will wish the chef lived with you so being vegan could always be this easy.

Customer service is just not impressive. I've been here twice as of the most recent renovations and at different times of day. Unfortunately I have yet to come and the raw food bar has all options available. You look at the menu online and see so many options...that they don't have. Not to mention this spot is soy-dominant when it comes to vegan options. Most of the cold bar options are not soy-free. Same is true for the hot bar. This is not health food. It's non-animal product meal options. Anyhow...When I walked in today, I spoke to the gent working the hot bar closest to the register. He said nothing nor gestured to acknowledge my greeting. I went to the cold bar which appears to be the start of the line to get your food choice(s). Well I stood there while the entire staff only acknowledged the hot bar. I eventually had to ask how to get service at the cold bar and they said people normally come to the hot bar to tell them they want cold bar cause they have no way of knowing who got in line first. Smh. Well how about a sign that states where the orders start? How about numbers? Better yet, I was initially one of three people in your establishment -- pay attention and don't be dismissive and rude. I put the poor service aside and got two small sides and a "large" side, all from the cold bar for $17.01. That includes the $.10 bag offered by the female who seemed exhausted to be there. Heck...I just spent $17 for three leftover selections of sides. Yes i want a bag to put my three containers, utensils and napkins. Please don't spare my pockets now.... I can't confidently recommend this restaurant unfortunately. Try at your own ability to overlook good customer service.

Still willing to drive 75 mi for this food!! I been coming for the past 2 yrs but I'll admit since my last trip I felt like there were sooo many new items added. I ordered online & picked it up. My favorite is usually the maple curry drummies, with cashew mac n cheeze & collard greens but to my surprise they also now offered "bowls" so I got both to go!! Food for the entire weekend! I ordered the vegan steak bowl & my mouth was watering! I couldn't resist desert so I added that too, lol.

If Chipotle had a soulful, culturally rich cousin... it would be Spice Black. Period…read more I've been seeing this place all over social media, so when I found myself in the area, I had to see what the hype was about. First off, parking is easy. It's in a shopping center, so nothing stressful there, and the restaurant itself is easy to spot. Walking in, the first thing I noticed was how clean, polished, and classy everything looked. Even though it was busy, it didn't feel chaotic. The staff immediately greeted me and asked if it was my first time which I appreciated. They didn't just rush me through the line; they actually took time to explain the menu, how the bowls are built, and offered samples. That alone made the experience feel welcoming and intentional. Now let's get into the FOOD. Everything looked fresh. They have about four rice options (which is already a win), and I went with the pineapple coconut rice. For my protein, I chose grilled chicken, but they also offer shrimp, salmon, and even a mushroom option for vegetarians and honestly, the mushrooms looked so good I almost switched. For my added sides, I kept it simple because I really wanted to taste everything. Collard greens and sweet potatoes. But they also had plantains, and okra....real deal soul food options. Then you get into the fresh toppings. Slaws, carrots, pickled veggies. I kept it light. I finished my bowl with collard green pesto (which intrigued me, and I'm glad I tried it) and added an étouffée sauce over my rice... and listen!!!!! That combo? Chef's kiss. I grabbed a tropical punch juice, and just like everything else, it tasted fresh and well-made. Let me say this clearly: the food is a 10/10. If you're someone who will give Chipotle chance after chance, then you absolutely owe it to yourself to try Spice Black. 10/10. Worth your money. Worth the hype. Worth the experience.

The restaurant is nicely decorated with vibrant colors and very clean. The service is friendly and welcoming. The food was okay. Not bad and just good in my opinion. Its not rave worthy but its still good. I would come back and try other options. This is still a good healthier option oppose to the many of terrible choices we have to choose from, this beats most unhealthy fast foods restaurants. For that reason I would return to try other food options. If you like chickpeas then this is your meal, Im not so it threw off the salad to me. I would have preferred chicken. Honestly, everything came together nicely as one salad, nothing was over powering. I'm just not a fan of chickpeas. They do have an option for shrimp but dont eat bottom feeders so that wasn't an option for me. My tastebuds are much different from yours so I would still give it a try. You might like it a little more than me. Its still a fairly good meal.

Coming back to MD for work however means I get to Uber eats on the company dime. No, I don't want McDonalds or Chipotle. Oh, look! Carolina Kitchen! My favorite item to get at any southern/soul food restaurant is always smothered pork chops with greens and mac and cheese. I was a little surprised at how expensive the plate was here but after ONE bite of the mac and cheese, I realized that it was well worth it. Best mac and cheese I've had. First, when my delivery driver dropped off my plate I was thinking to myself, Dang, this is heavy! I only ordered one plate but it felt like 2lbs of food. When I opened the container I was pleasantly surprised that it was packed! Two pork chops (sauce on side, thank you), huge servings of mac and cheese and greens and a cornbread. All fantastic. I can't speak on the other items, but I know what I ordered was straight fire. I was a little scared of the Mac because it was SO yellow lol but it's actually decent. The collards are decent too - could have a little bit more flavor. Corn bread was cool. They do give good size servings. I'll say the meal will satisfy your hunger. It isn't the best soul food I've ever had. I thought I was ordering from the other location. My bad! I can't believe she opened another location where she apparently has not improved on her business practices. I have ordered at this location and waited over an hour for my order. The food was STAMP just like Schlim said, but the wait is just ludicrous. So the couple times I went there after I just packed my patience. This evening I needed to grab some food quickly before heading to an event. I had no idea what I wanted. Open up the app and LMG popped up. I ordered for pickup on Uber Eats. When I arrived, almost an hour after I placed the order, they said they needed a "couple minutes" after she went over and finally looked at it. They do not check the app orders. They have no business dealing with anything not right in front of them. They can barely handle that! That couple minutes turned into an hour. I had to finally go up to the counter when I saw other people getting their food quickly. That got the woman behind the counters attention. Because I think she forgot again. She apologized and said they had been swamped. Is that my problem? Then she tried to offer me a drink for compensation. Um, are we talking about the same drink I ordered and paid for. At that point I just wanted to go. Got home and opened the food. As long as it took, you would have thought it was freshly cooked. Everything looked like it had been sitting around all day. When I saw the turkey wings as a special, I knew I had screwed up. It was old. The gumbo greens were disappointing. They burned it and had the nerve to serve it to me as if I wouldn't notice. I have it sitting here with the lid on, the burnt smell keeps smacking me in the face. Here's the best part. The oxtail egg rolls did not taste freshly cooked. After I started eating the second one, I found these cooked inside. It's not edible or part of the stuffing It's definitely some kind of plastic. Disgusting. The turkey wings and Mac and cheese were barely edible. Especially the mac and cheese. I have eaten before at their other location and despite the extra long wait there too, the food was fresh and tasted great. No complaints there. So I was expecting food that would make it worth the wait. This time, they had the nerve to make me wait on barely edible food. Food that absolutely belonged inside of the bowling alley it's located in. Extremely disappointing. I won't ever be going back. I don't give my hard earned money to restaurants that waste my time and serve slop containing plastic to add insult to injury.

I stated that site isn't on the ig to place and order. I was told that if I type the business name in DoorDash or uber eats while I'm standing outside, it'll come up. I told the young gentleman to have a great day. He wasn't rude, but I won't be supporting this business. Something about this interaction didn't sit right with me.
