Maple curry drummies, collard greens, and Mac and cheese
    Zakia C.

I had my boyfriend to pick up some food for me today. I got the maple curry drummies, collard greens, and regular Mac and Cheese. It was just OK. Nothing really stood out to me, and the food was a bit bland. I'd give it a 5/10. Also, the website menu needs to be fixed. It only has very vague information like 2 sides meal, 1 entree with 2 sides, but it doesn't show you what the options are to choose from.

I love visiting ELife so much! This black owned business is such a treasure in Takoma Park. When you walk inside Elife you can see there are plenty of tables available for indoor dining, and the interior is very clean and tidy. Then you bask in the glory of an endless buffet of vegan food. From meatless chicken drummies, to fried "fish", to casseroles, Mac and cheese, and plenty of greens you are in awe of the variety of plant based dishes. In addition to the hot and ready food, you can also order sandwiches from them. I have not yet tried a sandwich because the Mac and cheese and faux meats are so hard to pass up. They have two different Mac and cheeses. I prefer the cashew based one since it is smoky, however their other Mac and cheese is reminiscent of your favorite childhood Mac and cheese. I am a sucker for those chicken drummies too. They offer them in a few different sauces, and Buffalo is my favorite because it is spicy. This meat is perfect for those that want to replace chicken in their diet as it is chewy and stringy like the real thing. ELife also has shelves of vegan dessert! They have many different cake slices to pick from. I have only tried the carrot cake which was definitely worth the calories. For those opting for a healthier sweet option, they also have a fridge full of juices. I hope you will show this black owned business some love. If you are ever to try a vegan meal, you cannot go wrong with anything on their menu. You will wish the chef lived with you so being vegan could always be this easy.

Customer service is just not impressive. I've been here twice as of the most recent renovations and at different times of day. Unfortunately I have yet to come and the raw food bar has all options available. You look at the menu online and see so many options...that they don't have. Not to mention this spot is soy-dominant when it comes to vegan options. Most of the cold bar options are not soy-free. Same is true for the hot bar. This is not health food. It's non-animal product meal options. Anyhow...When I walked in today, I spoke to the gent working the hot bar closest to the register. He said nothing nor gestured to acknowledge my greeting. I went to the cold bar which appears to be the start of the line to get your food choice(s). Well I stood there while the entire staff only acknowledged the hot bar. I eventually had to ask how to get service at the cold bar and they said people normally come to the hot bar to tell them they want cold bar cause they have no way of knowing who got in line first. Smh. Well how about a sign that states where the orders start? How about numbers? Better yet, I was initially one of three people in your establishment -- pay attention and don't be dismissive and rude. I put the poor service aside and got two small sides and a "large" side, all from the cold bar for $17.01. That includes the $.10 bag offered by the female who seemed exhausted to be there. Heck...I just spent $17 for three leftover selections of sides. Yes i want a bag to put my three containers, utensils and napkins. Please don't spare my pockets now.... I can't confidently recommend this restaurant unfortunately. Try at your own ability to overlook good customer service.

I decided to order from ELife because I had a 50% off UberEats promotion that I wanted to use. So glad I did because I got so much good food! I ordered almost everything on the menu! 4 Cold Sides Plates: - Garlic Kale Salad (really great flavor and perfectly dressed!) - Mock Chicken Salad (nice texture and flavor_ - Spinach Quiche Salad (didn't taste that eggy and felt a lot like the chicken salad but still good) - Curries Vegetable Salad (great flavor) Entree and 2 Sides: - Seaweed Wrapped Fish Patties (these reminded me a lot of fish, loved how they looked and had a good texture) - Green Cabbage (good flavor) - Original Macaroni and Cheese (yummy but the cashew one is better) Corn Bread Entree and 2 Sides - Drumettes (Maple Curry) (my favorite! great texture and generous portion) - Collard Greens (decent flavor) - Cashew Macaroni and Cheese (another favorite!) Popcorn (I am a popcorn guru (like popcorn is really my favorite food) and this was divine! Still trying to figure out what seasonings they put on it so I can try to recreate it) They have really good pricing and their food was very tasty! I have only been eating vegan for a few months so every now and again miss meat and eggs but if I ate from here everyday, I wouldn't miss it at all. Textures and flavors are very reminiscent of my omnivore life, haha.

The atmosphere is extremely vibrant and filled with positive energy ( I came in for a takeout order and ended up staying for over two hours... ) I had the honey hot sauce Salmon bites... and I would call them mini bites of perfection ( absolutely delicious ) seasoned just right and the HH serving definitely outshines its $8 tab... I also ordered the 1/2 chicken with seafood fried rice and cabbage ( that's for dinner.. but I couldn't wait to put the spot light on their super live HH ! ) The customer service is cool ( they can seem a little overwhelmed at times ) shoutout to Tae the bartender for doing an amazing job at keeping everyone happy and grooving ( Hennessy side-car was no less than an 8 1/2 ) And I want to give BIG props to the manager ( Kelvin I believe his name is ) he went above and beyond to ensure that every soul in his restaurant was pleased and took care of on a high level from beginning to end... definitely should be up for restaurant manager of the year !!! FYI: Now, my biggest gripe ( and what had me close to putting 3-stars... but the Vibe kept it at 4-stars ) was the fact that I ordered a dozen of raw oysters and they served them on a plate ( not on ice ) the oysters were warm, which made them stick to the shell entirely too much. Kelvin, one word of advice... no high end or reputable establishment ever serves their oysters on a ice less plate ( NEVER ) I know you'll correct that in the very near future... Miss Toya's is too on point not to invest into official oyster treys !!! Definitely going back real soon for HH again...

The Breakdown: Fried Green Tomatoes: Overcomplicated and heavy. The crab meat on top came in huge chunks...almost like chicken nuggets...and sat in a very thick cream sauce over corn. It was underseasoned, and the combination of textures and flavors just didn't come together for me. Fried Pork Chops: I'm so glad I got the gravy on the side because it was extremely salty. I had to use hot sauce to give the pork chops some actual flavor. Sides (Greens & Fried Rice): Very average. Cornbread: If you like cornbread that tastes like actual dessert, you might enjoy this. But for me, it was super-duper sweet...put caramel on it and it could pass for a cake. Maybe it was just an off day for the kitchen or I ordered the wrong items, but for all the hype, it fell flat Maybe I'm just a tough critic because Chicago has me spoiled with great food! Service was friendly. The restaurant was an older facility with decor saying we're trying to be modern. I was a little let down spending almost $100 for average.

This is still a good healthier option oppose to the many of terrible choices we have to choose from, this beats most unhealthy fast foods restaurants. For that reason I would return to try other food options. If you like chickpeas then this is your meal, Im not so it threw off the salad to me. I would have preferred chicken. Honestly, everything came together nicely as one salad, nothing was over powering. I'm just not a fan of chickpeas. I started off with the Mimosa Sampler for my drink order; I wanted to try the different flavours that were on offer. These were nice, but I'd hoped the presentation would have been a little better and the mimosas not as heavy with the juices. The food was great! Super tasty and packed with flavour. My husband had the Peach Cobbler French Toast and I ordered the 'Create-Your-Own' pasta. I requested it with salmon, shrimp and spinach, but it only came with the shrimp and spinach. Such a shame, because I can imagine the salmon would have made the dish EVEN better. When the bill came, it had the salmon (which I never got) listed on it - after pointing this out, the server checked with the kitchen, and kindly removed it from the bill. Overall, I would say that we really enjoyed brunch here. I will definitely be back in the future to try the main dinner menu & hopefully there'll be no mixups with what I order and what I get .

Eventually other customers arrived, but there was never more than maybe three or four tables for the duration of our visit. Despite emptiness, the service was pretty slow. It took 40 minutes for our wings to arrive and an hour for the crab dip and entrees. It would've been a shame for our food to take that long to arrive and not be good. Thankfully, that wasn't the case. Every dish was on point. The grilled lemon pepper wings are a must have. It's my favorite type of wing and most restaurants served them fried, but grilled is my favorite way to have it. The wings are well seasoned, and the meat comes easily off the bone. The wings are so good you really don't need the dressing, but I'm the type of girl that never passes up a dipping sauce. By the way, it comes with ranch dressing instead of blue cheese. The crab dip was rich and creamy, and topped with big lumps of crab meat. The crispy bread chips were slightly crispy but mostly soft, which I prefer over a harder, crispy bread. The catfish sandwich was perfection. It was fried just right, well seasoned, and an ample portion of catfish. The fish was so large that it completely covered bottom bun. I probably could've cut it in half and made a second sandwich. My mom was kind enough to let me try her salmon pasta; that's what I'll be ordering the next time. That salmon was seasoned on every side and cooked it just right. Everything about this dish was good. I'll definitely give this place another try, I just hope the service is a little quicker next time.
