I visited this establishment for an event with an interest in supporting its stated mission of community healing, activism against racism white supremacy, and plant-based nutrition. However, my experience revealed a significant disparity between the stated purpose and the actual atmosphere created by the owner. The irony: The event was a documentary, discussion, and supporting the vendors who came. During the discussion portion after the documentary, comments and thoughts were welcomed, so I shared my thoughts specifically highlighting resources on collective healing and rest in relation to generational and historic racial injustice/oppression (resources such as the Nap Ministry). The vendors and attendees were kind and friendly, and a few were curious about the grassroots healing organization I mentioned. What I noticed was, while the owner was notably attentive and warm toward his white patrons and others, his demeanor toward me, the only Indian woman there, was inexplicably hostile and impatient. It left me confused. In his direct comments to me, he indicated a disdain he had for "Indian people" with the generalization that "Indians are the most successful in this racist system and are therefore part of the problem." I was painted with a stereotype that has nothing to do with me. It was disappointing to see a space dedicated to 'liberation' revert to such narrow, localized profiling of a supporter like myself, especially considering that my intention for being there was the exact opposite. This attitude of blindly disparaging Indians is the same anti-blackness he claims to oppose. It is ironic that in a space claiming to fight racism white supremacy, the owner reserves his most aggressive scapegoating for a dark skinned woman of color who was there to offer genuine support (an easy target for misplaced hostility), all while changing his demeanor for the white guests. It contradicts the grassroots racial struggle he claims to represent and left a bad taste in my mouth. The food was overpriced but watered down, cold, and lacked flavor. The whole atmosphere was cold, low vibrational, grievance and money driven, and lacked the vitality and integrity one would expect at this price point. Quality is a result of Presence. Because the owner's heart was closed and his mind was set on getting money for low quality food and finding a scapegoat, the food had no life-force. I have withdrawn my support from this place. read more

I was just in Elife Restaurant the customer service is horrible. I came in and I asked the young girl if they had any more of the cashew Mac and cheese coming out. What they had on the line was an almost empty pan that had one serving of the cashew Mac and cheese in it. After asking the girl if they were bringing more out she looked at the other young girl that was serving and asked her. So I the hot box is right over there you can go check and see if it was more in there. There was no need to ask the other girl. What I notice at this restaurant is when the food is extremely low to where it is out they don't refill the line they will service you all the old stuff till it's gone. So the girl goes in the back and then when she comes back. She skips over me and the other girl said why do you have to be rude. I told her I wasn't rude but just stated facts. That all she had to do was check the hot pot instead of ask u like she wanted you to say no and serve me the crumbs that was online. Also when the girl came back she skipped over me and another guy came out and he asked me how he could help me. So I asked him if he could bring out some more of the cashew Mac and cheese because I wanted a large and did not want what's was stuck to the pan. He went and got another cashew Mac and cheese. The other server continued talking under her breath. So I told her look I am paying for what I am requesting I and no one else should have to get the scrappings which wasn't enough for a large serving in order for you to finish the pan and bring out a new one. This happens often here. I will not be coming back to this Vegan food location any more after today. The customer service is horrid and most times the food be cold. read more

While visiting the Mitchellville area, we revisited one of our favorite places, Elife. It had been a couple of years since our last visit and we were pleasantly surprised that the shopping center had a facelift, which makes the area more appealing. My husband was obsessed with the "jerk chicken" and wanted it every day. They didn't have it the next day, so he tried the wings, and was impressed, but the Jerk Chicken remains his favorite. We went every day while in the area, and they did not disappoint. The vegetables, "meats" , desserts and everything we tried were amazing. I kept commenting about everything being plant based. I know the staff was probably tired of hearing that. If you haven't tried it, you need to stop by. You never know what they're having if you check online, but if the Jerk Chicken is available, you've hit pay dirt!! read more

The attitudes and energy of the workers is sickening. It's clear they didn't want to work or answer questions. This was my first time in this place and the poor services was enough to make me not return. Apparently they i may sell what's on the brunch menu on sundays and everything was tofu based. Though the kale salad (sweet) was good, the other kale salad (garlic) wasn't so much. The make like chicken and gravy using tofu was just okay but when I asked for gravy the little girl stakes a little cup (that they use for samples) to dip the gravy. The vegan pasta tasted like a million bucks. I was also able to partake in the lecture that took place on the dinning side which contained a wealth of information. I love visiting ELife so much! This black owned business is such a treasure in Takoma Park. When you walk inside Elife you can see there are plenty of tables available for indoor dining, and the interior is very clean and tidy. Then you bask in the glory of an endless buffet of vegan food. From meatless chicken drummies, to fried "fish", to casseroles, Mac and cheese, and plenty of greens you are in awe of the variety of plant based dishes. In addition to the hot and ready food, you can also order sandwiches from them. I have not yet tried a sandwich because the Mac and cheese and faux meats are so hard to pass up. They have two different Mac and cheeses. I prefer the cashew based one since it is smoky, however their other Mac and cheese is reminiscent of your favorite childhood Mac and cheese. I am a sucker for those chicken drummies too. They offer them in a few different sauces, and Buffalo is my favorite because it is spicy. This meat is perfect for those that want to replace chicken in their diet as it is chewy and stringy like the real thing. ELife also has shelves of vegan dessert! They have many different cake slices to pick from. I have only tried the carrot cake which was definitely worth the calories. Customer service is just not impressive. I've been here twice as of the most recent renovations and at different times of day. Unfortunately I have yet to come and the raw food bar has all options available. You look at the menu online and see so many options...that they don't have. Not to mention this spot is soy-dominant when it comes to vegan options. Most of the cold bar options are not soy-free. Same is true for the hot bar. This is not health food. It's non-animal product meal options. Anyhow...When I walked in today, I spoke to the gent working the hot bar closest to the register. He said nothing nor gestured to acknowledge my greeting. I went to the cold bar which appears to be the start of the line to get your food choice(s). Well I stood there while the entire staff only acknowledged the hot bar. I eventually had to ask how to get service at the cold bar and they said people normally come to the hot bar to tell them they want cold bar cause they have no way of knowing who got in line first. Smh. Well how about a sign that states where the orders start? How about numbers? Better yet, I was initially one of three people in your establishment -- pay attention and don't be dismissive and rude. I put the poor service aside and got two small sides and a "large" side, all from the cold bar for $17.01. That includes the $.10 bag offered by the female who seemed exhausted to be there. Heck...I just spent $17 for three leftover selections of sides. Yes i want a bag to put my three containers, utensils and napkins. Please don't spare my pockets now.... Ok so let me inform you all of the scandal that's happening at this location. But first I must say the food is very good but...... they are stealing money from us and I'll explain. I went on a Monday and when I ordered my food and went to the register the lady wrung me up and I added a 10% tip and after I paid she started to walk away quickly but I hit print receipt and she stopped grabbed the receipt and said oh sorry I accidentally charged you extra. She then called the manager out to refund me the difference and I said people make mistakes and I left. Called my wife and told her what happened and I told her I bet this was intentional and I'll see next time if she does it again. So I returned and she was on the register again so I ordered my food went to the register and again after I paid she tried to walk away quickly until she seen I hit print receipt and without looking at it handed it to me and just as I thought she charged me for 2 entrees when I only ordered 1. When I questioned her she said sorry I made a mistake and again called the manager to refund the difference. I asked is this how you make your extra money and she then acts like she doesn't understand English. I then Asked for the owners contact and the manager stated it's on the receipt. I called left a message and no return call and it's now been 4 days. So I'm telling you if you go here please check your receipt before leaving because they are thieves and not sure if the entire staff is involved but definitely some type of scandal going on. they moved to the new building, which I LOVE. I've been able to grab food from them a couple of times since I moved further out. Each meal has been absolutely delicious. I make sure to purchase a few things so that I can enjoy it for 2-3 days. My favorite options are lemon pepper drummies (Wednesdays I think?) and maple curry which are an all time fave of mine. My next favorite options are the collard greens, sweet potatoes, garlicky kale salad, and the ratatouille which were all divine. Probably my staples every time I go. I also really enjoyed the curry chickpeas and their red beans and rice. The best ever. I'm really grateful they're doing so well post pandemic, new location is in the same vicinity as the previous building. Compared to spots like NuVegan, I noticed I don't have reactions to ELife's food! This means that I can trust their food, and their ingredients. There were some good and OK take aways. As an Executive Vegetarian Chef, I wanted to see what good food was in the area I was visiting. I ordered the Seiten chicken wings w maple glaze, chickpeas & rice, and cashew Mac n cheese. It was the end of the day, so the food wasn't as fresh as I would have hoped unlike a fresh cooked beyond burger (that wasn't available). The wings need a little more flavor and crisp, the chickpeas over rice were OK, the cashew Mac n cheese was on the dry side after sitting for a length of time. In this area alot of restaurant do a buffet Cafeteria style hot plate. It saves on overhead cutting waste. But the food quality and integrity is a challenge to control. So I wish this establishment well in its concept. There were some highlights that I haven't experienced. The strawberry lemonade, ginger juice was good but think. So here were my corrections when I got home. Added garlic powder, onion powder, coconut amino acid to chicken wings let the glaze reduce and crisp up the wings, reworked the cashew cheese Mac n cheese by adding little more nutrients yeast, bechamel sauce, & red pepper flake, hint of celtic salt, and truffle oil. Add water to thin out the strawberry juice. But the star player was the peach oat milk base Gelato was great. I also like the cold compressed juices as well. The flavor and texture of the drummies is what keeps me coming back. The cashew mac is hit or miss depending on the temperature. When I arrived and informed them of the pickup order, I was told they were about to make the order. This was an inconvenience as I was on a schedule and was expecting to walk in, pick up the order and continue my evening. Furthermore, i was also Informed that the Steak and Cheese that was available to order online, was not available in store. I had to get that portion of my order refunded. While in the car, I was checking over my order and discovered they had missed a side. Had I not checked, I would have gotten home, been missing a side and paid the price of an Entree and 2 sides instead of 1. I would have gladly doubled up on the 1 side I did have, but they were all out of that as well just after my order. Ive had good food from them before, it the service could have been very much so better IMO. The staff was nice about the entire process, no issues there. They have two types of Mac and cheese, one made with cashews and the other with potatoes. I'm not sure of the details regarding how they are made. Nevertheless, I chose the potato mac and cheese with, collard greens and "shrimp" as my entree. I was simply blown away by the "shrimp", the item looked exactly like shrimp with a nearly identical texture. I was informed that the product was made from white yam?!!! The meal was absolutely delectable.. even to a dairy lover! Also, for all the food I had, the price was more than reasonke to me! All in all, I will be back to try more of their great look entrees! As for the desserts... well, I haven't had ALL of them, but I'd say I've had all the ones I wanted to try. My absolute favorite is the Sweet Potato Cake. There are two brands of cakes that they sell, but both are pretty good and each provide quite the variety. They've got smoothies, cookies and brownies too. Many restaurants come and go in the county, and I believe that the ones that don't make it are those that have not stressed the importance of the "customer experience" to their staff. I LOVE the food at this establishment, but if I continually feel like the staff is only tolerating me, for a check; or they're not invested in the owner's success, I know that I won't continue making the trip. The first time I came, there was a young lady who took me through all the food and offered samples. She's the kind of person that belongs out front. But in more recent experiences, some staff barely look you in the eyes, and they're speaking so low that when you ask a question, you hardly hear the answer. I STILL rate this restaurant HIGHLY!!!! There were so many option to choose from and they helped me understand the menu. The jambalaya wasn't very spicy but it was flavorful and the veggie sausage were good! On a road trip to a housewarming in Virginia. We stopped to get some gas and my daughter realized we were near one of the places on her list to try. Less than a quarter of a mile was Everlasting Life. It's a soul food vegan restaurant (what more can you ask for!) Upon driving into the parking lot, I felt a little depressed because the shopping center could use some tender loving care. Everything looked a little run down, like it need a facelift :/. That didn't stop me though and once we entered it was the same thing. (It was confusing because they have two separate door to get in ). The food looked really good, but no signs to tell you what it was, had to ask if I didn't know. The staff was pretty friendly and didn't mind answering our questions. I don't understand, what's so hard about making signs. You also have no idea what the prices are. We had an idea because we looked on line. Anyway, you have to go to the other side to sit and eat. My daughter and I both had the Vegan mac and cheese & collard greens. The mac & cheese was good and creamy (very impressive for Vegan), the greens, seasoned well. We also got the Maple Curry drumettes and Sriracha Shrimp and Rice. Pina Colada and Double Chocolate cake for dessert. Yes! everything was Vegan! I must say, even though I'm not vegan, everything was delicious and would differently go back if I'm near here. The prices were not too bad especially considering the amount of food they give you! I returned here after a 10 year hiatus...the entire block looks different but they remain the same (secretly hope they move and get better accommodations for the clients.) The food is still good. The service is functional without being pleasant. It's cafeteria service style with no eat in dining options...but who else is serving vegan food? read more

Didn't realize they changed the name from " Everlasting Life". Regardless I always enjoy the vegan fare and leave with more food and drinks than I intended. This is because there are so many tasty looking options. I like all the meat alternatives. I do think they can add some smoked paprika and fresh garlic to the cabbage, green beans, greens and back eyed peas but that's just they way I would season those. If you need quick and good 100% vegan restaurants in PG County I think this is your only choice. The cakes and juices are good too which is why I leave with more than I plan. read more
