Highly recommend this excellent restaurant. We were looking for a restaurant walking distance from our hotel, either this or studio east. Glad we picked this. What a unexpected find on our visit to Halifax. The restaurant is in a quiet neighborhood away from all the tourist. Jen was the perfect server - was patient in answering all our questions. After feasting on seafood for three days, we were hungry for something else. This restaurant has had really good reviews and we thought we'd give it a try. we had some oysters and tuna tartare, but then we each had a pasta entrée. My chicken thigh ravioli was delightful and my wife had the Cachio e pepe. Pasta was made fresh and entries were served Hot and delicious. The wine list is moderately extensive with a number of options by the glass or less than a bottle. The service was fine. The location is 1.5 miles from the center of town. The crowds were surprisingly light on a Sunday night. It was a nice change of pace with a chance to get away from the mob scene on the water streets. read more

This neighborhood restaurant looks casual, but the food is top notch. I dined on the most succulent chicken that I've ever enjoyed, cooked sous vide. Despite being super busy and crowded, our server delivered excellent service to our group of 15. I'll certainly return when next in Halifax. read more

**Happy Hour review** We walked in at 4pm on a Saturday in October as we noticed the Happy Hour special: $6 beer and wine, buck-a-shuck. The beers on special are whichever ones are on tap; wine on special is whichever the first wine in each category of wine (white, rosé, red, etc) in 6 oz. What they didn't mentioned is that the buck-a-shuck requires patrons to buy a food item and it is limited to 8 oysters per food item. We ordered a beef tartare and a dozen oysters (that's when she gave us the spiel on that we can only get 8, but will give us an exception of 12). The wine and oysters came within reasonable time. The Pristine Bay oysters are fresh and served with their house-made hot sauce and vinaigrette. The beef tartare ($15) came about 10 mins after the oysters arrived. The tartare is missing flavour - it is single dimensionally beef taste only. Overall: 3.5/5 stars. Disappointed on the Happy Hour omission - almost like a dishonesty. Why don't they say it outright that you have to purchase it with food, but no, you have to bait the patrons and then tell them. Tartare was another disappointment. Not going to recommend. read more

Way up there in chef skills in HRM, wow. Everything was cooked perfectly. Dishes were "spaghetti mushroom" = tonnarelli di funghi with snap peas (burst in your mouth and sweet, peas ...equally delcious, mushrooms were encrusted with all of the good things of the world. Spectacular. One of the best dishes I've had in HRM in a very long time. I"m sure the fresh, local produce played a part the came through in the flavours. Partner had lamb chops and mushroom risotto, he made the OMG face and stopped chewing at first bite, closed the eyes...I concurred. Med rare perfection. Service was excellent, it seems like a friendly (but not too friendly, just right) well oiled efficient team. Was an absolute pleasure of a time and doubled as a romantic cozy getaway on a chilly night for us. Definitely a new favorite date night gem. Can't wait to see what's next! read more

Classified as 'Modern European', eh? Canada in general seems more European than American to me, thank goodness they could pull that off considering the tremendous American influence. Fried haddock was of course quite nice. Waitstaff was so cool with their tattoo sleeves, in colors. Place was very, very warm. To my amazement they actually have sparkling mineral water on tap! Never run into that before. For that reason alone they warrant an extra star. Dessert was some chocolatey concoction with caramel syrup, way too sweet but the 3 blueberries sitting on whipped cream roses were delicious. Very nice looking clientele too. I struggled with this. The restaurant is sweet and the outdoor patio is nice. The Customer service is really good. Amber is wonderful! The food was delicious! We had the oysters - so fresh! And we had the scallop and salmon pasta and the risotto croquettes and flatbread. We had the steak and risotto - all SO good. However it was SO stifling humid and hot in the restaurant that some of our group couldn't eat or enjoy the evening. We had to fan ourselves with the menu. The ductless heat pump wasn't even turned on - it may be broken. But if it was broken they should have come over to explain when they saw half the table fanning themselves. I looked over and there were no lights on it showing it was on, as it was when I entered. It was really really uncomfortable, an oven. I would never go again in the summer without calling and having them guarantee they had air conditioning. Winter - sure. read more

I recently came by this new west end resto to catch up with friends. This block, with Studio East, Tony's, Robie St. Station and the even newer El Chino Snack Bar, is a formidable food option for people in the neighbourhood and from around the city. We arrived for a late-ish dinner as I had been working the day shift, so the crowd was pretty thin by then, with just under half the tables occupied. A long bar runs much of the length of the narrow restaurant, with nice shelving made out of wooden boxes - some open and others with upward swinging doors. We were sat at one of the tables along the window, with a very chill, low-backed banquette running the length of the window. Unfortunately they either underestimated their cooling needs or their AC was out of commission, as it was very, very hot and humid inside. All the doors and window were open, and a couple fans were set up, but it was still uncomfortably warm. Their drink list is pretty extensive, with plenty of wines to choose from, as well as local beer and cider on tap, and several house cocktail recipes. With the heat, I went for the tangy, cleverly-named Goseface Killah, from the nearby Good Robot brewery. The menu is pretty compact, with a handful of appetizers and a selection of familiar proteins for entrees - lamb, beef, pork, chicken, duck, and a vegetarian pasta (though you can add meat to it). My wife and I got the "E&V toss" salad to share as our appetizer, while for my main the pork tenderloin drew me in with its double smoked bacon sauerkraut, and pomme gaufrettes (fancy waffle fries/chips). I was glad that we split the salad, as it was larger than apps often are in nice restaurants. With plenty of fresh micro greens, pine nuts, toasted apple and cubes of fried haloumi, it was a light and tasty start to the meal. The pork was a bit underwhelming visually, with everything being on the yellow/brownish side of the spectrum, but taste always wins, as it did in this case. I'm not normally a sauerkraut guy; I never put it on sausages when I get those at carts, and I've never bought any for at-home use. But E&V's struck a great balance between tangy, savoury and a hint of sweetness, and the generous mounds of it made for a nice topping on the ultra-crispy gaufrettes. The pork was very moist and had a lovely char from the grill, and paired well with everything on the plate, including the creamy dill sauce that added a bit of herbiness to the dish. For dessert we got the tiramisu cheesecake, which combined two things my wife loves. The slice was large without being a terrifying heart-stopper if one person were to have it, and it came in a surprisingly large pool of chocolate. Not your usual Jackson Pollack-esque drizzle, the whole bottom of the side plate was liquid chocolate. Probably not great for margins, but damn tasty. The cheesecake was very light and smooth, and the coffee flavour was a nice way to finish a delicious meal, without the caffeine. While Eliot and Vine isn't trailblazing any menus on their way to culinary fame, but they're making very good food in a part of town that didn't have that option. Now if they can just keep things cool in there, we'll all be better off. read more

Eliot and Vine is the quintessential neighbourhood eatery that has a fantastic wine list, beautiful food and a deck for those days when you just want to sit outside. A well curated menu means limited options but options that for the most part, are done incredibly well. The morels on toast was a great way to start dinner - not over cooked, just enough garlic, long curls of Asiago cheese and finished with a beautiful crème, all on a slice of fresh baked local sourdough. The salmon and hodge lodge was the second course, and it too had nice flavours and a perfectly cooked piece of fish. Was also really happy to see local delicacy, fiddleheads, on the plate! Drawbacks included what seemed like frozen peas and corn, where fresh roasted veg would have likely made a great compliment on the plate. Also missed the potential of a crispy piece of salmon skin on the plate. Finished with a cappuccino that was just ok. Suspect it's more about the coffee being used than the technique. Dining companion started with the garlic shrimp. While the menu stated that Thai chilies were to feature, the shrimp was a bit bland and could not be recommended. The tannarelli di funghi however, was another stunning dish, with the confit mushrooms a lovely way to get everything from the morels on the plate. All in all, this is one of my new favourite spots in Halifax! Will definitely head back when in town. read more

I have come to this establishment on several occasions, usually for drinks. Cocktails are superb, nice wine menu, and the Moscow mule is Service is great, friendly and knowledgeable. Two thumbs up to Jesse, he is fantastic! Love the atmosphere, and open windows in the summer. Decided to go for dinner with some people who were visiting from out of town. We ordered: the hen, pork chop and fish. Food quality is solid, clean plated nicely. Only issue I have here is there is barely any food on your plate. Pork chop was bland and nothing spectacular, there was 1 Brussel sprout cut in half, half of a carrot and half of what I think was a root veg of some sort. The hen was gone in 3 bites. So we ordered dessert, too pretty to eat. Crafted beautifully but again, it was a shell of chocolate and some cream inside. Walked away broke and starving. I love this place but sadly won't be back for dinner. For the prices being charged, please put some food on the plate. read more

I've been to this restaurant a few times now and regard it as one of Halifax's hidden gems. The food is truly sublime and well thought out. It stands out because the menu is ever changing to suite the fresh ingredients that are readily available. Most of the ingredients are locally sourced and fresh. I've had the pork belly, tuna, chicken, and beef, lamb dishes. The lamb being my favorite as it just melts in your mouth. The Tuna tartar as a starter is also lovely for it's unique presentation an intriguing flavors (it arrives looking like a little island on your plate). I've ordered the cheese board as a starter, but found it underwhelming. I appreciate the concept behind it of promoting local cheese and wheat, but found the flavors to fall short and not hold up as well in comparison to the rest of the menu. The desserts are also delicious, the flan was a big hit at my table for its unique presentation and texture balance of creamy and crisp. The ambiance is chic and modern. There is seating where the chefs plate the dishes, a private section where the walls are grand canvases custom painted, window seating, and bar seating. Service has always been on par during my visits. Very happy to support this local restaurant. read more

If first impressions last a lifetime, Eliot and Vine is doing something right. Stepping through the front door the first thing that caught my eye was the decor - wow. The main room, lined with a stunning bar is bright with huge windows opening onto the street. The manager greeted us with a smile, took our reservation information and led us into a smaller backroom. Equally impressive, the dining room's walls are hand painted with flowing flowers and the lighting is perfect for a romantic date. I was told, Breakhouse, a local design company is responsible for the spectacular atmosphere. Our server was lovely from start to finish, the service was flawless. My friend Janis and myself split everything we ordered, my preferred way to dine. The appetizers were to die for. I had the grilled halloumi salad and Janis went for the pork belly on polenta. We murmured sweet nothings through every bite, it was a great combo to share. After such an exquisite start, we were really looking forward to the mains. Both of us our pasta lovers, Janis went for the pesto pappardelle, the only pasta offered on the menu, and I was sold on the special - a seafood pappardelle in a rose sauce. We were slightly disappointed with the pastas. While both were good, neither were exceptional like our first course. Taking a look around at our neighbouring tables, we concluded that the meat and fish options looks like the way to go. That being said, I feel if you offer one pasta on your menu, make sure it's damn good. The kitchen is open concept, so I was easily able go back and chat for a minute with the chef, Jason Townes and the sous-chef, Ben Nichols. Even during the busy dinner rush, they were pleasant and answered all my questions. I glimpsed the halibut and rack of lamb plated and they looked divine. Owner, Johanna Eliot, took a twist on the famous Los Angeles intersection Hollywood and Vine, her last name, and wine of course, to come up with the name - Eliot and Vine. Not new to the culinary scene, Eliot has produced a number of culinary shows in the past. Anyone who dines here will experience the passion that has gone into creating this welcome addition to the Halifax restaurant scene. We will definitely be back, maybe just not for the pasta. read more

My husband and I visited Eliot and Vine for the first time last night (Valentines Day). My husband booked reservations in advanced, knowing it would be a very busy night. We had later reservations for 7:45pm, and showed up to no table- we as well as a few other couples were sent to the bar to await our tables. After an hour of waiting, we were finally seated. Starving by this point as it was almost 9:00pm.. I was given a complementary glass of champagne (nice gesture, however when you haven't eaten and it's almost 9:00pm, alcohol is the last thing you want- and my husband was given nothing). They should have been providing some sort of food for the couples at the bar to keep people comfortable, in my opinion. As for the food (once we were finally served), the charcuterie board was underwhelming- for the $22.00 we paid for it. Our main dishes were both very well done- this is the only reason I have given any "stars". I enjoyed the beef cheek, while my husband had the lamb shank. He said it was one of the best shanks he's had- however being as hungry as we were by the time we had food, I think this likely played a part in our enjoyment. I wish I could give a better review, as I've been really looking forward to trying Eliot and Vine. I truly hope the management team puts an effort on improving their time management, and that they have a more realistic timeline regarding table turnover. read more

This resto is everything I was hoping it would be. We have plenty of upscale restaurants in HRM, but this one is a huge cut above. The interior is absolutely gorgeous. So much care was taken, and it shows. There are three areas for seating: the main room, which has a long banquette along one wall with a family table in back; a small lounge-ish area; and some seats in the kitchen area so you can watch the chefs at work if you like. Each room has a different feel, but you can't go wrong no matter where you sit. Service was impeccable the night of our visit, and the food was outstanding. Perfectly crisp calamari in a spicy tomato sauce to start. I had the halibut and Mike had the chicken. Mike said it was the best chicken he'd ever had, cooked to perfection. I was afraid with the high prices and "pretty" plates that portions would be small, but not so. I couldn't finish my (amazing) fish. Dessert was Napoleon and tiramisu cheesecake. The Napoleon was very good and Mike inhaled his cheesecake. For drinks, they have non-alcoholic beer for the DD (fortunately, that was Mike). I had a ruby daquiri and a sangria. Both were delicious. The sangria was HUGE and took some time to finish. Yes, it is expensive, but well worth every penny. We had a great time and can't wait to return. read more

Had long heard about this restaurant, so made a week night reservation for the two of us to drive in from Bedford for dinner. Fabulous Brussels sprouts and scallops on parsnip purée appetizers. Great steak and frites and curried lamb shank. Totally fabulous blues soundtrack that did not interfere with conversation. Trendy vibe. Only disappointment came at the end when, as sticky toffee pudding connoisseurs, we saw it on the dessert menu and decided to stay for dessert. It was dry, not enough sticky toffee, awfully hard sponge toffee. Not within shouting distance of the Old Triangle's sticky toffee pudding. We had cocktails -- I would recommend sticking to "classics". Overall a great restaurant and I hope to return soon. read more

Enjoyed it, but... We may not go back. Everything was lovely and enjoyable but unfortunately at the end you discover the 1% add on for staff health plan. It is commendable to offer health insurance but this comes across badly and sends the wrong message. The food was perfectly prepared and the service great and friendly. We loved the decor as well. 2nd visit: a Saturday night in March at 6pm. I had birthday reservations and we were the first customers of the evening it looks like. We were seated in a corner table in the small, cozy room in the back and were there probably 20 minutes plus before another couple arrived to be seated in the opposite corner of this small room. I like the darkness of it, as well as the bright open main section, with difficulty deciding my preference. Excellent service from a male server that evening. I ordered the Chicken (glazed breast, fried leg, smoked potato, carrots, onions, apples. $24) and loved it. If you didn't know what some of the ingredients were, you may have trouble figuring them out b/c of the way it was presented, with the potatoes pureed almost to a liquid base, but the combination of flavors was delicious. My friend had the Beef (Atlantic Blue Dot roast bavette, slow cooked oxtail, radicchio, parsnip, urban blue cheese potato, beef jus. $32) and liked it a lot as well, although wasn't full afterwards. There was no appetizer that jumped out to us to share, or we would've done that. He got a Monte Cristo coffee afterwards and myself a glass of the St. Clair sauvignon blanc. I was a bit overwhelmed by the many enticing options on the menu, fortunately our server Phil made some brilliant suggestions and we ended up with one of the best meals we've had in Halifax. From the scallops (with a fried quail egg if you can imagine!) to the lamb and finishing with the tiramisu cheesecake, the food not only looked amazing but tasted incredibly good. I can't imagine ever going to Halifax again and NOT stopping in to this place (okay, will probably go twice even). Definitely give Eliot & Vine a try, you won't be disappointed. read more

Came in for a late evening Sunday dinner and was treated to a great dish: the "hodgepodge" featured a perfectly cooked slab of halibut atop a lovely combination of summer vegetables, authentically fresh and free from heavy sauces. I was so excited to finally try this place for mine and Shawns anniversary. We arrived around 7pm and the place was empty, we were the only ones there. The waiter seated us along the road side and gave us drink menus to start. The menu's were well thought out and not overly busy or over crowded. The decor was simply and clean. The bar was the main focus and we ordered cocktails to start. We decided to order the cheese board, which came wih 3 cheeses, and a selection of meat and fruit. I've never been so disappointed in a cheese board than with this one. I cheese was so potent neither of us could stomach it, the bread was so toasted it was completely black and just crumbled in our mouth.Some of the pieces were also wet, the mix of textures were just not pleasant. I don't typical send things back but this was just not good. After sending the board back we just decided to order more cocktails and order or mains. The mains were just okay, I had ordered the chicken done two ways. It was just didn't stand out in anyway,it came with a mix of veggies and polenta. It was a little tasteless. Shawn had ordered the seafood pasta, and it just the same. I had hyped this place up so much, I was expecting something special and new to try but I was greatly let down. This place is beautiful inside! Food and drinks were just ok for me. Didn't justify the price. I had a halloumi salad to start that was a little bland, underdressed, and low on halloumi. The beef tenderloin steak was good, but not great, which it should be for $39. We also had the leek and scallop starter, which was a creative combination but the almost raw leek ruined the dish. The lamb was good, but not great. Deserts were fantastic! All in all a nice experience, service was great but just not blown away by food or drinks. Just a bit ordinary. It was one of the best dining experiences I had in the city. We shared Gnocchi then had Halibut and Pork Tenderloin. The price were reasonable when I look at the creativity on each plate. I was excited to try this new place in the neighbourhood. Great service and it was quite beautiful inside. We sat at the bar and decided to try multiple small plates with a few drinks. The drinks were great the bartender was attentive. The food was just ok. Really nothing to write home about. Lacklustre. The best thing was the carpaccio, and the calamari was crispy, The mussels had these weird texture milk soaked garlic that made it feel like they were mussels that had gone off. The pork belly was ok. On a second visit, I'd say was even less pleased, even the carpaccio didn't live up to the first visit. It felt like the all the attention was placed on the looks of the place and none in the kitchen. If I go back it will only be for drinks. read more

Awesome experience at this place. Everything on the menu sounds amazing and from what I tried they taste incredible too. The chef and the servers are top notch. The dining room makes you feel like you've left Halifax for somewhere much more European. Stopped by for a quick drink after work but had to stay to try some food.
