We came here for drinks after a heavy dinner and it was the perfect place. Small and unique with amazing staff. It's a little hipster/bohemian but not pretentious at all. Even though we were all above 40+ we still felt welcomed. Great selection or bourbon and whiskeys..with a great cocktail menu. We even had the oysters because we got a bit hungry and the local oysters were perfect. Amazing little bar with a nice food menu that we have to check out again when we are a bit more hungry. For a Tuesday it was opened until midnight which was amazing!

I had the Sunspot cocktail and a Bartender's choice with guidance. Both were quite nice. For food I had the muscles and the beef. Once again, both were great, but the beef is superb. I sat at the bar and the service was great.

Heard so many great things about this place, so we put it on the 'must-try' list during our trip to Halifax, and I'm so glad we did. Phenomenal experience. Top notch food, atmosphere, and staff. Great place to hangout for a drink, chill or go out on a date while enjoying some quality seafood. We ordered the seafood platter off their Happy Hour menu, which includes a half dozen oysters, 2 chilled seafood dishes and sides. The oysters were delicious and fresh, and the seafood dishes prepared fresh by the chef were perfect compliments to the platter. The whole experience from start to finish was amazing, I will definitely be coming back on my next trip and highly recommend this place to any future travellers!

Just had this amazing martini concoction, the Resident. Half traditional (gin, vodka), half amazing (herbal liquor, green pepper). My goodness. Combined with olives and tapas, it just hits.

Smoked Sausage and mushroom dish is to die for!!! I eat out all around North America and this is memorable... which says a lot! Tuna with apple and seared scallops a close second. Great ambiance. Fabulous. Will be back. Make a reservation.. it's popular.

Walked in on a Thursday night and got seated at the bar right away. Really nice and intimate atmosphere inside. We mainly came for oysters and found that the PEI ones were the best - you can request which ones you get. The staff was really friendly and checked on us often.

it's great! Chef has that passion and intensity that will keep the quality very high for a long time. Flavor was amazing don't be afraid of anything. We were there mid week and it was not very busy but I am sure the traditional date nights will keep this place hopping. Highly recommend!! A new HFX favorite.

Amazin place for cocktails and tapas in Halifax. Scotty the bartender was great! made us some amazing drinks..got chan chan and another custom vodka drink both of which were very good. They have really good tapas..got the asparagus deviled eggs, beef tartare and the croquettes all of which though we liked them in that order as well. The pairing of the eggs with the cheese was really good; the consistency and flavor of the tartare was good as well (surprisingly not disappointed compared to the multitude of other places we've had it at) and the croquettes with smoked macquerel had a distinct taste. Loved the ambiance. Would def recommend coming here if in Halifax.

Small space, easily packed . Me and my friend walked in ( read a news about top 100 restaurant in Canada , here is one of the top 100), had a table immediately. Stuffs are all really nice , they were doing their jobs . First time here , I can't say how good these food are , but these food are full of surprises, there were only two of us, otherwise I would order every single dish to find out those surprises. Recommended!!! But I won't give five stars, coz foods came out were way tooooo slowwww. It took us 2 and half hour to finish 5 dishes.

Coming in on a Tuesday evening, the place was about half full; a comfortably-sized crowd that kept the restaurant from being awkwardly empty, but didn't keep us from getting a table right away. The interior is kind of quirky, with a decor that's hard to describe but I would generalize it as a modernized version of your quirky aunt's place. A cool little marquee sign complete with the Edison bulbs framing it display the day's specials next to a nicely lit bar, whose shelves are comprised of a mix of square and rectangular boxes. I'm not sure how/if any of this ties in to their old school, pastoral-ish name, sign and social media cover pictures, but it all kinda works somehow. We started out with a round of drinks; I ordered the nicely balanced Clockwork Orange, comprised of bourbon, Aperol, Cynar and orange blossom water, while my wife went for a rum-forward cocktail on special that was a bit too sweet for my likings, but was right up her alley. Despite my other half's dislike of seafood, there was still plenty of tantalizing choices on what's still a relatively lean menu. Our first round of edibles was comprised of the croquettas, patatas bravas, and the meatballs. I appreciated that all of our plates came out one by one, which allowed for enjoying the food and good conversation, the way more meals should be these days. The croquettas came out quickly, three to the plate, with a dollop of garlic sauce. Panko crusted, they were ultra-crispy on the outside, and yet incredibly smooth on the inside. The garlic sauce was pungent, but not so much that it took over the light taste of the potatoes and manchego cheese. Batting second in the line-up was the patatas bravas - chunks of skin-on, fried potatoes tossed in a lightly tangy tomato sauce, with small dabs of their omnipresent, but tasty, garlic aioli. While they don't have the crunch of your typical fry, the flavour was nice. Moving past the carb-heavy first two selections, our meatballs arrived, in a thick tomato sauce, with a dusting of cheese and pine nuts. I'm not sure what meat was in them other than beef, but it was a fantastic mix. Or maybe it was just high quality beef. Either way, these were fantastic, and my wife, who isn't very keen on most red meats, said it was the meatiest meat she had ever eaten and really enjoyed. For our second round of food, we ordered the Iberian ham, the quail egg and mushroom pinxto, and the Brussels sprouts with 'nduja. I have wanted to try Iberian ham since hearing about it on one of the food/travel shows I watch. The heritage breed pigs forage in fields and forests resplendent with tree nuts that flavour the pigs themselves and the stratospherically expensive ham made from them. A mere 25g (a typical package of grocery store deli meat is 150-200g) is $16 at Highwayman, so it isn't a daily, or even weekly, bar bite to have with post-work drinks, but I was eager to try it for the first time. Shaved razor thin in slices the size of large coins, the meat had surprisingly thick bands of fat in it for ham. The smell was surprisingly nutty, so much so that I thought it was all in my head from my previous knowledge of it, but my wife confirmed its fragrance. That flowed through to my taste buds as well, and it had strong grassy notes as well, making it altogether unique compared to every cured meat I've ever had. Each slice was appropriately cherished and enjoyed, and in the end was well worth the price. I've had countless meals I've spent $16 on or more that are less memorable than this meat. While the jamon Iberico was a tough act to follow, the quail egg and mushroom pinxto somehow rose to the occasion. A fried quail egg was perched atop a sautéed mushroom cap, on a slice of baguette with a thin spread of garlicky goodness, and a light pesto-ish sauce brightening up the small bite. While seemingly very basic in its execution, it was the most well-balanced of all our plates that evening, with the umami-rich egg and mushroom playing against the bite of the garlic and lightly vegetal sauce. Last, but not least, for our small plates marathon was the Brussels sprouts and 'nduja, which I was informed was a sort of Spanish pate. This was by far the largest dish, with a pile of deep fried sprouts on top of the 'nduja, and slices of pear breaking up the plate a bit. Generations of people growing up with steamed sprouts has led to the unfortunate reputation that they have, although this has gladly been improved by dishes like this. The crispy sprouts paired well with the slightly spicy meat spread, and the occasional slice of pear added some sweetness and acidity to cut through all the richness. If you're going to eat a full on meal here, it won't be cheap, even if you exclude the expensive-ass ham. But if you're out for a night out, or drinks and a small bite after work, Highwayman is gonna serve up some excellent food to share with people you like spending time with.

My wife and I spent two lovely hours at this relaxed and inviting spot. We ordered (and split) five dishes one at a time over the course of the night. Food: We liked everything but our favorite was the fish platter. Every dish was original, carefully prepared, and beautifully presented. The sauces and garnishes complimented but did not overwhelm. Food was served at the proper temperature and food delivery was well paced. Desserts include standards (Crème Catalan) and originals. Drinks: Cocktails were not too sweet and each one highlighted a particular flavor, mostly citrus. I requested an exotic vermouth that was not on their list, but they had it anyway! Our after dinner cappuccino was smooth, rich, and artfully presented. Service: Our server (Hannah) was very well informed, knew when to linger, and when to leave. We had a bottle of water for the table and fresh settings after every course. Hannah is the sort of server who hears your interests and suggests a dish or drink to match. Sadly, their credit card machine doesn't go higher than 20%, so I was unable to leave her a sufficiently large tip - my math skills were alcohol-impaired. Setting: Chairs are comfortable. Music was a bit loud for our tastes but we're old. The tables are fairly close to each other but not cramped. The lighting is fairly dim, but not dark.

Loved the quail eggs. The octopus with beans dish was very much over salted. Drink selections were well thought out; outstanding!

When you get that you are given admission thru the "cover" restaurant. We came in on a Saturday night when they opened at 7pm. We were escorted down around 7:15pm. Neat way to enter the actual speakeasy. Once in you are greeted in a dimly lit "library" with a bar. There was 50's jazz which added to the ambiance. Bar tender and servers were very friendly and attentive. Ordered a few special drinks. (See pictures). Overall a great speakeasy experience. Glad to have found one in Halifax.

We walked in said our password and they were 40 mins late on setting up on Saturday Halloween eve. Only servers can allow you in. Atmosphere is dungeon library with 1950s music. Drinks are $15-17 each. We ordered: - Grandma's Boy ($17): 3/5 similar to Old Fashioned. A very simple straight up old fashioned that didn't have much complexity. - The Last Barman Poet ($17): 3/5 tequila based sour. A bit savoury because of the spices. Not that complex either. Overall: Such as shame as the atmosphere is amazing. Compared to a lot of restaurants with cocktails, this one is pricier and less amazingly prepared. We were disappointed with the selections and that's why we only tried 2 and left.
