The tee boxes were okay. All of this could be somewhat overlooked if they didn't charge $45 for a green fee and cart. I wish courses would give a discounted price when they know their course is not in the best shape it can be. And the greens! Yes, they were badly maintained, but they are also the most unfair greens you will ever play. And depending on where they have the pins, it can be downright unplayable as you will constantly be having your ball ROLL OFF THE GREEN after almost coming to a stop near the hole. Some of the views are really nice, however, as you can get good pictures of your playing partners with Lake Livingston in the background. So, in summary, if they charged approximately $30 to play this course, it would be a good value. At $45, it is a complete rip off. We only play here when we visit and camp at our property in Onalaska. This is about a 25-minute drive, which is really convenient if you're just looking to get away, drink some beer, and play some golf with your friends and family. For this reason alone, I almost gave it 3 stars. The condition of the course the most recent time there is why I only gave it 2 stars.

The beauty here is the simplicity of the layout. Good Job Elk. Every hole is exactly as you see it, no tricks, hidden dangers. But to end up with a score below Houston summer temps require you to have a PGA style short game, or Ben Hogan school of course management. If you end up out of position, there is no up and down. 3 putts on the large waving greens, chunked flops out of the troll haired rough is common. I was more nervous around the green than waiting for an episode of Game of Thrones to start. Cold sweat, junkie twitch, Kevin Na yips... The word on the street is that this is the best course in Houston by a long shot. And that there are weekday deals that make this affordable to all willing to make the drive. Like Han Solos says, "it's all true."

There were SO MANY "old timers" out and about here. Luckily, they were friendly old timers, not snooty rude ones like some of the members of the country club I worked at like 20 years ago. The driving range, putting and chipping greens were nice. Carts were awesome. Super quiet. GPS touch screen. AND only $20! (Most courses we went to this summer were at least $27.) As for the course, I think this was one of the best ones we have seen all summer. Fairways and greens were well taken care of. My son had a couple challenging holes but hey, that's golf. Normally our trip is after the time change and did catch the course in a seasonal sanding but the conditions of the greens even with sand made for quite a challenge. The rooms are 6 star and the food is comparable. Wine list is excellent and well stocked (no shortage off '07 Silver Oak Cab). Caddies were a new component and not experienced but most of us had played the course so was not an issue. The course has 3 five pars and 3 par 3's on front side. Great course for gamblers and fair to the shorter hitters. Clubhouse is off the charts, locker rooms are the best ever and the staff is not in a hurry or overworked. We were the only foursomes on the course the two days we were there except the A&M golf team. Possibly the best golf/dining/lodging experience ever and certainly anywhere in Texas.

The property is located about an hour from IAH Airport, and the route was very direct and easy to navigate. We stayed in one of their cabins, which was beautifully decorated and very spacious. If you enjoy a rustic atmosphere, this is definitely the place for you. The cabins were comfortable and fit perfectly with the charm of the property. All of the wedding events were held in the main building. We attended the rehearsal dinner, which featured a buffet-style Mexican meal with flour and corn tortillas, pinto beans, yellow rice, chicken and beef strips with peppers, corn chips, queso, and a variety of toppings. I have to say, the yellow rice was absolutely delicious! For dessert, they served a bread pudding that was out of this world. Honestly, it reminded me more of monkey bread than traditional bread pudding, and it was delicious. We returned the following morning for breakfast, which included yogurt, egg frittata, French toast, bacon, coffee, and juices. My only small disappointment was that maple syrup was not available; they only offered agave. Also, decaf coffee was not readily available, so you had to ask for it. The wedding itself was beautiful. During cocktail hour, they served chicken on a stick and a cheesy bread appetizer. Being from New Jersey, where we are used to cocktail hours with an endless variety of food, I have to admit I was expecting a few more options! Dinner was also served buffet-style and included Brussels sprouts, potatoes, prime rib, and chicken. Everything we tried was delicious. I'm not sure how often it rains in Willis, but it certainly did while we were there! Fortunately, the cabins were equipped with umbrellas, which was a thoughtful touch and definitely came in handy. Before arriving, I interacted with a woman named Frankie, and I have to give her special recognition. Frankie seemed like a one-woman show! She was there all three days and appeared to do everything--from serving guests and moving tables to helping run the events, making coffee, and assisting behind the bar. I honestly don't know if she was also involved in preparing the food, but nothing would surprise me! I was so impressed by her work ethic that I kept telling my family, "I hope they're tipping her well!" Overall, The Historic Hill House and Farm is a charming and beautiful venue, especially for anyone who appreciates a rustic setting. The cabins were spacious and beautifully decorated, the food was delicious, and the staff worked incredibly hard to make the events run smoothly. Frankie, in particular, left a lasting impression on me because of how hard she worked throughout our entire stay.

She said "$30" he said "okay so $30 and 1:20?" She responded "yes tomorrow at 1:20" today we were coming into navasota from Bryan and were running 5 minutes behind so we figured we should call in and let someone know we are still coming. The lady who answered was very polite but informed us that our time was originally scheduled for 12:20 we explained the miscommunication and said we would be happy to take the next available time slot. Luckily it was at 1:40 so we didn't have to wait too long. However, when we got to the clubhouse to check in my friend was told it would be $55 for 1 player and 1 rider. To us, we had already drove 45 minutes to enjoy a nice course so we didn't necessarily have a choice but to pay. I believe this will be our last time at this course due to this interaction. We typically try out a course and bring our friends and family (around 8/9 carts on an average weekend) to play the courses with us but we will be passing on from this course. Also, the course is severely neglected. The staff is severely lacking any sort of professionalism and training. The girls want to giggle and play on their phones but do not want to take accountability for their mistakes if the pricing was wrong the first time... I believe they should have honored the price given and own up to their rookies mistakes. Thankfully the girl today is the only one who shown any sort of sympathy and could not authorize honoring the price given to us Saturday.
