The cafe was full the entire time I was there, so that forced me to mill around the store for a few hours. This was such a great bookstore to explore. I loved the children's section, it had a little castle for the kids to play! They had a very large selection of kids books. There was a second floor but I didn't have time to look around up there. And there was a cafe "Little Oddfellows". There was some seating there but we had just eaten breakfast so we didn't explore that either. One bummer was that the restrooms didn't have a changing table for our toddler (which is weird to me because they have a children's section?!) I didn't get as much time as I would have liked to look around but I loved all the handwritten recommendations. I thought it was hilarious that there was one on all four Emily Henry books (which, look, I get it. They're awesome. But other authors need love, too!) I love that they're open until 10pm. I love going to bookstores. This is a popular place located right in Capitol Hill. I was looking for a bookstore to relax in Seattle and this came up as the top rated location. As soon as you enter you are welcomed by the staff. The store is large with two floors and a cafe in the back. For a book lover like myself this place is a dream. You could spend all day wandering the aisles. On a typical day you can find this place packed with locals and college students who are stopping by. Every book in the store is well organized. The fiction section is very large. They even have a large comic book section for people as well. I managed to get a book and sit down at the cafe and enjoy a nice read. Someone mentioned this is what Powell Books is like in Portland. Elliot Bay gives readers a more local at home feel as opposed to Barnes and Noble which has more of a corporate vibe. Good size. etc. etc. IMHO, this bookstore is the most important business on capitol hill. No offense to other business owners intended. The day this bookstore goes away is the day Capitol Hill is officially another version of the Ave. No offense intended to people who love the Ave. I literally grew up on the Ave and Capitol Hill back in the 80's and 90's so it pains me to say anything negative about the Ave or Capitol Hill. I have been a long time fan of Elliott Bay from the days on Pioneer Square to the relocation to Cap Hill. Highly recommended for any book lovers. The staff have always been helpful... even when I only have a vague notion of a title or author or attempting to find some intriguing and age appropriate for all my nieces and nephews. I continue to learn about authors from the staff picks (the best way to spend an hour) and typically go in for one and end up with 5-10 books. Grateful for the punch card. I have a serious problem when it comes to books and bookstores. I just can't say 'no'... and Seattle has put me in a bind and insist I expand my library, damn it! (I'm not mad about it) There were a few specific books that I couldn't find at some of secondhand shops around the area, so I came to Elliott Bay to get the titles I wanted and came out satisfied. Whenever I travel, I try to find a bookstore. That is, of course, assuming I remember to. Sometimes I get caught up and forget to. This time around I didn't and I checked out The Elliott Bay Book Company. At two floors, this local bookstore is huge. There are books upon books. Going in is a bookworm's dream. They have a café but the day I went it was closed. Same story with the bathrooms. Boo. We went in and spent maybe half an hour to an hour perusing. I somehow didn't buy anything, but I think this is because l was at the end of my trip. I was very surprised to see how contemporary they are at this bookstore. Very LGBT+ friendly. A lot of books discussing sexuality, not to mention handwritten notes from staff recommending books. They, too, sold a lot of miscellaneous merchandise like books and t-shirts. I really wish I had had more time there, but my head was pounding. Didn't really give this bookstore the time it deserved. Have to go again. read more

This time I traveled Seattle with my daughter, walking down the Pike street to go Palihotel, where we stayed, from Frye Art Museum, she said "Mom, you want to buy some books?" I don't read books on electronic devices. Never made the switch. I understand it's convenient but my eyes need a break! So if I'm in a lobby waiting for an appointment or chillin' at home I'll pick up that paperback or hardcover book I'm currently reading and continue wherever I left off. I enjoy going to the bookstores. I like weaving through aisles and looking at book jackets. You might walk into Elliott Bay Book Co. with no expectations and you might walk out with a book, a gift, or a phone number. Not my number though, sorry ;) Before Elliott Bay Book Co. moved to Capitol Hill they were in Pioneer Square. During that time, I worked in Pioneer Square and on my break, I would walk to their 1st and Main bookstore. On my way there, a guy with a beard sold Real Change on 1st Ave. He would always say, "Hi Lady!" to me with a smile and I would wave back. I knew him as "The Real Change Guy" just like the man throwing footballs on 3rd Ave "The Football Guy". Then Elliott Bay left Pioneer Square and shortly thereafter I quit that Pioneer Square job. No, no, I didn't leave that job because the bookstore left the area (haha). I left because it was time for a career change. I still make my way up to Elliott Bay Bookstore on Capitol Hill. I usually take the #11, 49, or the light rail. Still a great atmosphere and the staff are awesome too. If you like architecture and design you'll notice the exposed ceiling beams, wood floors, skylights, and pendant light fixtures. It's a different vibe between night and day. Day is chill, night is lively. Elliott Bay is my #1. A close second is Kinokuniya in Chinatown-International District. Elliott Bay also has a satellite bookstore at Sea-Tac Airport. read more

The bookstore is quite large and it reminded me of Strands Bookstore in NYC, with many sections in the store based on book genres and gift sections. The coffeeshop at the back of the store also looked cozy and I could imagine it would be nice to sit down for a few hours with some books in hand. They carry from many independent publishers that I normally buy from directly and have to suffer from long shipping times, but every now and then Elliot Bay Book has a copy on hand that I can just come and get. The punch card is actually one that makes you want to use it, given how much you get when you fill it. The staff is friendly, the prices are fair, and it's just an all around beautiful bookstore. I'm not much of a reader myself, but I knew that Elliott Bay Book was a must do while in Capitol Hill during my visit. Absolutely LOVED my visit to Elliott Bay Book! They have a little bit of something for everybody. Looking for a perfect romance or mystery novel? There's tons of shelves of them. Maybe books about social issues or hobbies are more your thing, they have tons of those too! They even have shelves full of great art/photography books that are perfect for decorating your home. And best of all, their prices are definitely reasonable and it's always great to support local bookstores as opposed to chains! There's a lot of spaces throughout the place for reading so that you can get a feel for the books before buying. The space is spacious, but at the same time cozy and welcoming. The workers are super friendly, and my books came double bagged, which made it super sturdy for my long walk back to my hotel with heavy books.
