Was in search of a good eye doctor. After extensive research I found Dr. Cane. Office was clean, quaint, and homey. It isn't a big office but it gets the job done. Staff is friendly, waiting area has plenty of chairs for the place. Tech did a great job of being patient, walking through the steps of the tests done and inviting. Assortment of glasses & frames are plenty with reasonable pricing. Dr. Cane was super knowledgeable he knows his stuff! So glad I found him. Very understanding, calm, collected and won't nickel and dime you. His personality made you feel very relaxed instead of anxious and he even cracked some jokes. I'm really upset I even have to be writing this. I've never written a review before. I needed a new optometrist after moving to the LA area and came here after reading all the positive reviews. the initial appointment itself was fine and standard. the doctor was kind and chatty. after doing a trial of the contacts, I came in for a follow up and flagged that one eye was a little blurrier than others and I had been feeling dizzy/ gotten headaches after wearing them a while. he assured me that was normal and my eyes just needed to adjust -- so I proceeded to purchase them that day. I fulfilled my glasses prescription with another vendor, and noticed that the same headaches and dizziness was happening. I called the next day and flagged this to them. They said there was nothing they could do and it was likely the vendors fault they didn't fill the prescription correctly. I called again the same week asking when I'd be able to come in so they could address it-- they said that I'd need to pay for a full new appointment (which I could not afford after just having paid for an eye exam). I called again and got the same reply and they told me I'd get a call back -- which I never got. I just went in today and asked them to remedy the situation-- they made me wait for over 30 minutes just to say the same thing. really disappointing. I don't love doing this to a smaller business but felt like my experience might inform someone's decision to receive care here. If they mess up your prescription - they won't fix it, they will only charge you. read more

Dr Elliot has been my optometrist for as long as I can remember. He fit me with my first pair of glasses as a kid and taught me how to put on contacts as a teenager. I moved away a few years ago and had to try a different optometrist a few times. Although they were fine, I decided it was worth it to drive up to LA to see Dr Elliot from now on. EC Optometry is a small, cool eye care center run by Dr. Caine. It's located in Highland Park section of LA. I have been here copious time through the past couple years to get my annual eye care exam and/or get glasses. Dr. Caine is a licensed and accomplished optometrist and he is very knowledgeable and cool. This office is quaint and small. Moreover, they play a good jazz music at the waiting area while you wait. Staff were accommodating, caring, amiable, professional and competent. They all were wearing mask. Parking lot and street parking are available. Prices were very reasonable especially if you have insurance. Hours of operation has changed to 10 am - 2 pm (Monday through Saturday) due to COVID. Overall, I highly highly recommend Dr. Caine as your optometrist. read more

Just simply the best service every time. I love this cozy dr's office. Decent selection of frames and they can even order the frames you want if you have the specs. They once messed up my prescription and then asked me to repay to get my eyes checked again. This was annoying but since I was starting a new year in the health plan I just used to recheck my eyes. read more

Dr. Caine is a great guy. Unlike the type of places you may go to in a mall somewhere, he really takes the time to test your eyes thoroughly and will allow you to try out different contact lenses to make sure you like them, because everyone has different preferences. Parking is not always easy on busy York Blvd, so if you cannot find one right out front, I recommend finding a spot in the residential streets behind the area, which are plentiful. The office is old school but with modern equipment, and smack in the middle of the Highland Park scenester area. read more

I was looking for glasses and I usually go to Linden Optometry in Pasadena but the last pair I bought there broke 3 times ($400 glasses!). So I went into my old neighborhood to check out Society of the Spectacle. They were awesome but out of my price range. They recommended I see Elliot Caine down the street. I went in and was helped by his office assistant. He helped me pick out frames. I paid and left. He called me later that day to say I needed an eye exam because my prescription had expired. I got a 10am appointment the next morning. Dr. Caine was cool. The exam was only about 15-20 minutes. The cost was only $69. He had a special that was identical to Linden's. $99 for and exam and single lens frames. The only downside was waiting a week to get my glasses. A positive note, his assistant assured me that if I had any problems with the glasses, I could bring them in for repairs. All together, I paid $69 for the exam and $180 for the glasses. Not bad for some Hugo Boss frames. Overall, I had a positive experience. I may go back for contacts. read more

I needed a new prescription and received a recommendation for Dr. Caine from the lovely ladies at Society of the Spectacle. It started out with the sort of waiting room I wasn't used to: sure, there were shelves of frames to try on (cute stuff, too, not just the usual bland selections), but also, jazz albums on the walls, and magazines that were actually interesting, plus the very local newspapers. The back room, aka exam room, seemed somehow slightly out of date, but definitely wasn't. Dr. Caine gave me one of my most thorough eye exams I've ever had, and also identified an eye problem I have that no other optometrist or ophthalmologist has ever diagnosed (some sort of vertical shift) and came up with a possible way to fix it with my updated lenses. He did the tests on me I LOATHE, which involve eye drops, but I loathed them less with him. We discussed psychology. The guys at the front were really nice, too, and when I picked up my glasses, I ended up meeting up with Dr. Caine, unplanned, at Scoops down the street. Ask him about his experience with jazz music! I'll definitely be getting next year's annual exam with him. read more

This place receives the most amount of updates by yours truly, not because I'm obsessed but because their quality of customer service continues to shine. This time, dear Reader, I write to tell you about how Dr. Caine helped find me the most comfortable and suitable pair of contacts. Why is this epic? It took FIVE office visits to get it right: a testament to Dr. Caine's patience and desire to find you the best fitting lenses ('cuz seriously, by visit #3, I was cringing in embarrassment and impatience, but Dr. Caine had my back). Not all contact lenses are made the same: not in material or prescription strength (in spite of being labeled the same). The contact fitting felt a bit like Goldilocks and the Three Bears: one pair was too blurry, another pair was too difficult to put in, this other pair was too damn irritating, etc. After each eye exam, I given a trial pair of contacts to try out. Through trial and error, Dr. Caine honed down to a pair that accounted for my moisture-sucking, astigmatic, presbyopic eyes. Now I am outfitted with a pair of contacts that, when I have them in, feel as if I'm wearing nothing at all. Perfect! Thanks Dr. Caine and crew!!! read more

Dr. Caine is my boy! No, but really. I've been coming here for a few years now, and I only get the best of service. This is a great small shop right on York Blvd. in Highland Park. Coming here is a treat because you can reward yourself for being responsible with your eyes! Grab lunch at Highland Cafe, then grab a Chai Chata on Cafe de Leche! Dr. Caine is in a GREAT location. There is also a large parking lot accessible on the street behind York that runs parallel with it, as well as plenty of street parking around the neighborhood. (Not necessarily on York itself...) Everyone who works here, from Dr. Caine to his front of office staff, are professional, courteous, and just all around lovely people. They have a great selection of eyewear, as well as different brands of contacts. It initially took me going through about 3-4 different brands to find the one that was a good fit for me, but they were always patient with me. When anyone asks, I send them here. read more

You win some, you lose some; Dr. Caine lost me unfortunately. He got referred to me so I was happy to find a local trusted doctor. However, after receiving my new glasses in the mail (after 2.5 weeks of waiting for them) he had clearly messed up my prescription. I returned that same evening the fix the mistake. While Dr. Caine did apologized, he also started to suggest that is was ME with the problem; specifically that I might have diabetes or M.S. since my prescription was so far off from his initial reading. WHAT?! Being a very healthy person with no family history or lifestyle that might indicate either of these, I was both shocked and scared. Also being somewhat of a hypochondriac, I quickly scheduled a check-up with my PCP. But of course, after checking out fine, I am now appalled that he would even suggest that the problem was mine instead of his (or the "smudges" on his snellen chart that he admitted causes a lot of people to read 'Q' instead of 'O'.)...hmm, maybe it's time to update the chart then?! So now, I am still waiting on my glasses to return the second time around (two weeks later) even though I asked for them to be rush delivered... Moral of the story: If you need your glasses / prescriptions back within two weeks, or if you don't want to be told you have health problems when you clearly do not, this is not the place for you. read more

A jazz optometrist? Only in L.A. right?! What does one say about an optometrist(that is also a jazz musician)? This was my first time getting a full out eye exam (thank you very little post-40 farsightedness) and once I was finally seen (about 40 minutes after my scheduled appointment), it went really well. I feel as though special care was given to me and he even helped hold my eye open when putting eye drops in (my eyes instinctively close no matter what). He spent time to work out the math of what my insurance covered and how much I'd have to come out of pocket and used his calculator for it to make sense for me. Also took the time to help me find a decent pair of frames. Overall a good experience but then again, I haven't read any optometrist horror stories so don't know what to compare this to so aside from the looong wait to be seen, it was a largely positive experience. Well, I do wish someone had told me my pupils would be dilated BEFORE I arrived but it was needed. read more

I usually love this place but don't be more than 10 minutes late and make sure you don't park in a 30 min spot because you will be skipped each time you tell the receptionist you need to feed the meter. I've been here for over an hour waiting for a follow up appointment bc I need to purchase my contacts. I've walked outside three different times to feed the meter and let the receptionist know I was feeding the meter and have been skipped all three times. Receptionist failed to let me know I needed to wear my contacts.(I normally do not wear contacts but several times a year so I am unaware I need to adjust to them before getting my eyes checked) read more

He called me back within 20 minutes, which was still outside of official office hours, and saw me immediately. Exam, treatment, prescription, all straightforward. I was told to go here from by wife, who had heard about it from our neighbor. Nothing glamorous, just great service and quality products, and most importantly great customer service. I bought some pricey Sillhouette frames and lenses that do it all, but I know the service is great no matter what you buy. I was looking for someone in the neighborhood -- well, *near* my neighborhood of Glassell Park since we don't have much retail -- and discovered Elliott Caine on the VSP website. So far so good. He's nearby AND he takes my insurance. After reading his reviews I figured I'd take the plunge. He's very easygoing and thorough and explained everything he was doing as he went along. I've been wearing glasses for 40 years and I learned some new information about my eyes. How cool is that? The gentleman who works the front office is very helpful and patient and has a very gentle nature so selecting frames was low key. Usually, my indecisiveness at selecting frames annoys even me, but I felt very much at ease. I just picked up my new glasses yesterday and I'm happy to report that it's both a perfect prescription and a perfect fit. I'll definitely be back. read more

A couple of years back my mom went and got prescription glasses, she kept having problems with her vision and she kept getting told she needed to get used to her bifocals. We took our mom to a different optometrist when all of the sudden she almost lost sight on her left eye, the new optometrist was appalled that she got prescription glasses and was never told she had cataracts and that she needed to have surgery BEFORE getting a prescription. I last had an appointment for an eye exam on February 15th - before I left they asked if I wanted my prescription emailed to me and I said yes. The next day, I still hadn't gotten my eye prescription. I called, left a voicemail and emailed them. Heard nothing back. Next week, every time I called no one picked up. I've been super busy and haven't had any time to devote to this but now it's OVER A MONTH LATER and they still haven't responded in any way. What the hell is going on? The first time I came to this office was for an eye exam about two years ago. It was my second glasses prescription and as soon as I got my lenses made I realized that they were much worse than my first prescription - everything close up was blurry when before that was the only thing that I could see well without glasses. I had to make ANOTHER appointment to fix the prescription and get new lenses. I came back last month because I figured that that last experience was a fluke and the location is very convenient for me. However, both experiences have been a major waste of time and extremely confusing and I won't be going back. read more

I just went in for my eye exam yesterday and I can't stop raving about how awesome my experience was to my family and friends. Seriously, the doctor is AWESOME! I am sure if I were a lot more well off I would have gotten out of this place with more than just one pair of glasses. The office is very small but it has lots of character and the staff are very helpful and go out of their way to answer your questions and encourage contact if you have any issues with your lenses or frames. The office is located next to the York and he's been here before Highland Park started changing. I would highly recommend him. And as cool as that is, he's even cooler in his day job as an optometrist. Now I admit, I'm not the easiest patient for an eye doc, but Dr.Caine has helped me find the perfect combination of glasses AND contacts. It wasn't easy, but he did it. Dr.Caine is a great doctor, I've been his patient since I got glasses in 5th grade and he has always been nothing but kind and precise with what I need. However, his new secretary (wavy black hair) is horribly rude and not professional at all. After moving more than an hour away I still go see Dr.Caine and this time I had my follow up appointment she turned me back saying she had told em to wear my contacts the day of (even though I assured her she didn't, and didn't mention it in the reminder call) and since I didn't them I got turned back. I got angry and left without a new appointment due to a trip coming up, and in the way I called to let them know and see when I could go. The other secretary(curly hair lady) said I could be seen as long as I had my contacts with me. I was already on the freeway back home and I got out and went back. When I got back the Dr. attended me personally and finalized my contacts. However it was too late to get my eyes dilated so I had to go home and make a new appointment. Long story short the Dr. is great, but I will no longer drive an hour to get someone's attitude and turned back. If you don't mind customer service Dr.Caine is the perfect optometrist but I will no longer go and have my day ruin by someone who hates their job and takes it out on paying customers. read more

This place is extremely small, so make sure you make an appointment or go as soon as they open. I went in as a walk in. I was greeted by a very nice staff. They we're very accommodating. I got my examinations in the back then back to the wating room. Mr caine is a jazz musician so you'll notice some jazz decor as well as jazz music playing in the lobby. It's very taste full and not over done. Mr caine calls my name and in I go. He was extremly nice and professional. He really made sure I could get the best prescriptions. I finished paid up and left. The staff said their byes which was a nice touch. The only real negative this is that the glasses selection isn't the biggest. They aren't about that. They are about making a connection with their customers, and making sure you get the optimal care. read more

If you like those swank, trendy eyeglass places that charge $500 for glasses, then keep walking because this neighborhood gem is the real deal and Dr. Caine is the BEST! I came down with a wicked eye infection from a recent business trip and the pain was excruciating, but he squeezed me in on a Saturday, diagnosed a bacterial infection and hooked me up beautifully. He explains things clearly and simply, and I am now on the road to recovery. His staff are super helpful in making appointments, recommendations on frames, and handling insurance billing. Dr. Caine makes going to the Optometrist fun. He was very thorough and careful with his examination. With my contact lenses fitting, he included as many follow-up appointments (and trial lenses) as necessary to make sure that i had the right pair of contacts. It took 3 different pairs, since we opted for bi-focal (AKA - Multi-focal) contacts...
