I ate here because a dear friend of mine back home is named Ellis. No, no.. that's not true. No, I mean, he is a dear friend, but I ate here because I walked by it and smelled hamburgers. The fact that it overlooked a canal and I could people watch and also eat my burger was just a bonus. Afternoon lunch one day was here.. I went with a cheeseburger and fries. A little more upscale than I was expecting, but very delicious. The service was a bit slower than I would have preferred, but I had to tell myself that I was on vacation and there wasn't a rush.. and to slow down and enjoy it. I am a burger connoisseur from Texas. Ellis has very good burgers. You may love them or just find them they are good. Either way, you should try them. On this visit I got a burger with cheese and bacon. It was excellent. The bread was very special. The bacon was not overpowering. Well cooked but juicy and flavorful. Very well balanced. What makes this location special is that it is at one of the nicest corners in south Amsterdam. Outside seating offers very nice views of the canals. Especially at sunset. I had a good beer, too. Ellis was one of the worst dining experiences I have had in years. The food was overpriced for the quality we received. The burgers were overcooked compared to what we asked for and the nachos did not even have cheese on them. What really made Ellis atrocious was the service we received. It took 30 minutes after we ordered for us to receive any food. Even then, we did not receive a significant portion of our meal. After I talked to our waiter about the subpar service, she made numerous excuses and offered no apology. She didn't even offer a free dessert or appetizer as a way of showing remorse. Stay away from this place at all costs. You are better off eating out of a dumpster than coming to Ellis. You will leave impoverished, dissatisfied, and depressed after this dining experience. read more

Now that I've also tried the regular burgers I have to say I'm not impressed at all. I tried the Trio Mini Burgers: Classic, Guaco-Waco and Chicken. For the same price like in other places you don't get a big, chunky, juicy piece of meat between the bun but a rather flat, smoothly grinded piece in a perfect shape. My friends had the Classic and the Ellis Special so it doesn't have to do with the Mini Burgers. After I ate half of the Guaco-Waco I finally found a small spoon full of guacamole and that was it. Nope, doesn't make me wanna go back. I have to mention that the home-made ice tea is really good, not too sweet, but for €3,50 you get a 3dl glass that's half filled with ice cubes, which makes the few sips quite expensive. read more

Don't make the claim I stopped here twice during my trip. Walking past at lunch, the outdoor seating drew me in. I stopped inside and was told that I could grab a seat. I sat down and waited about 10 min but no server came out so I continued on my way and dined elsewhere. I'm all for second chances. I made the hike back for dinner as I really wanted to try the best burger in town. I grabbed a seat at the bar and ordered a beer and app. While waiting for the app, they filled up inside with just one server. There was a manager present when I came in, but at this point he had disappeared. While I love a good burger, the halibut special was intriguing. The server recommended against it and we got our order in before the wave of others. The calamari app came out and had a frozen look to it. Shaped like onion rings, they were chewy. My burger was served up and I'm sure I frowned. It didn't have a good bun to burger ratio. The flavor of the toppings on the Special 2.0 was good, but it was cooked on the well side, not medium as per the menu. The fries and dip were very good. The manager did eventually reappear and helped out, but I think the rush killed the kitchen. Dinner at Cannibale Royal was far better. Given a choice, I wouldn't stop back. read more

I'm really sad about it too - loved the music, had great staff and the fries and onion rings were both delicious. But that veggie burger is what carnivores are scared veggie burgers taste like. We walked by this nice restaurant the night before and decided to give it a try. It was really nice here and we cannot understand the previous review that the service should be better. The service was really good; friendly, attentive, funny and always smiling. We liked also their T-Shirts; some had "Order here" others had "Running for you" written on their back. The food was really good and they had 3 burger variations for vegetarians in their menu. Also awesome: the fries and the Gin&Tonic! The interior very nice. A nice burger place located on the Prinsengracht just a short distance from the Leidseplein. They have an interesting selection of burgers including a couple of vegetarian choices. I liked that they had large picnic style tables outside next to the canal that were under a large tree so that you could sit in the shade if you wanted. The burger I had had a large thick meat patty. It wasn't cooked medium rare but closer to rare. They also have milkshakes so I had to try one. It was essentially ice cream blended with a little milk. They must have used chocolate chip ice cream being there were little chocolate chips at the bottom of my.metal cup. The service wasn't bad but neither was it great. I'm going to give them another shot seeing as some people had a good experience. read more

I love Ellis Gourmet sooooooo much. We first found them in Belgium and thought the claim that they were the 'best burger in town' was just a claim. Not only are they the best in town, but the best in Europe and the Staes, for that matter. They are, hands down, the best I have ever tasted. The staff was friendly in both Brussels and Amsterdam and told us about the restaurant concept as well as the continuous experimentation they do with breads, meats and sauces to achieve that next great taste. The fries are amazingly fresh and perfectly salted. And the pickles - don't get me started on the pickles. I could eat a jar of them. They are sour with a hint of sweetness. Such a unique flavor. I don't know what I'm going to do without you once I've returned to California. I look forward to our next encounter. read more

We got our burgers at least 20 minutes after placing the order and then after 3 reminders still didn't get the fries for another twenty minutes. I was really really dissappointed with this burger. The patties are pre made frozen which didn't taste any better than meat you get in a burger at febo or McDonalds. I know they were frozen because my burger was still cold from the middle! I also went to the opening for a free burger and had high expectations because they claimed to be the best burger in town. These burgers were fantastic and the service was even better. My boyfriend and I had been in Europe for 8 or 9 days, mostly in Paris and a little in Amsterdam. Being from the states (a burger crazed society) we had started to crave one, so we stopped in here. The owner was working alongside all of her staff and seemed happy to be amidst the action. She and a couple others tended to us through out our experience. My boyfriend had the blue cheese burger, which, was a special for the day and I decided on the meat lover, my 2nd choice because they had sold out of the lamb burger. I've been in the restaurant business for a while, so I understand selling out happens and it's no ones fault, wasn't bothered by it. Always have a back up choice! My burger had a special beef that was different from their other burgers and it was delicious. We wanted to try The Trio, but the manager told us it wasn't available, and oops, he should have told us. Yet, he still left it up on the menu board. All 3 of us had the cheeseburger as it comes, medium. One of the burgers was almost completely raw in the middle. Onion rings and fries were okay. No tap water, so you have to pay a few bucks for a bottle of "still water." I think that's kind of a rip off. Service was okay, not good. We ordered the basic burgers -- three of us has the original style and I had the "Louis." They were all fine, but we've certainly had better. The service was just OK as well. Terrible Service! Arrived 1 hour before closing and the waiter was terribly rude, showing his displeasure at getting a new table and rushed us to order and out of there. Wished we would have walked out. Didn't enjoy the food as it was undercooked and the atmosphere so uncomfortable.
