They carry just about everything you can imagine from all the staples like eggs, milk, bread, to beautifully prepared foods and spectacular vegetables for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The store is extremely clean and well organized. Every square foot is merchandised with a great variety of items. The staff is helpful and efficient at the registers. RACIAL PROFILING AT ITS BEST ! If I could give this place no stars I would. My friends and I were RACIALLY PROFILED at this grocery store. When you walk in you can tell that it is upscale with a lot of organic options. I live in one of the downtown buildings and been wanting to go to that grocery store and try it out. A white bald employee followed us all the way from the back by seafood where we purchased a $30 fish, to the cash registers where we paid for our stuff and outside. He stood right outside the store door and was watching us put our stuff in our cars. That is unacceptable! He did not even have the decency to be discrete about it. They need to do better. I don't leave reviews ever but came here today after a shopping experience and saw the profiling review. I'll just say that I documented a staffer following me around 14 different times. I moved with intention to random aisles/out of view to be sure he wasn't just doing a typical patrol, and he would end up where I was standing within 10 seconds each time. This was the 2nd time I noticed this behavior at this store and I feel validated by the yelp reviewer that also experienced this (but sorry it happened to them too). Cashiers and non-security staff are great by the way! I saw a heartwarming exchange between a young woman stocking produce and a male customer with a child. Staffer helped the man find seasoning and had genuine conversation with the little girl about hot chocolate. I spent $110 there today. I'll go elsewhere now. read more

Prices are absolutely insane, nothing is fresh - produce is poor and I've purchased meat a couple of times that wound up being bad when I went to cook it the same day, staff is insanely rude, and they allow homeless people to harass shoppers for money. They are impossible to reach by phone - you can try all of the four extensions, and every one of them says "the mailbox is full" and it's been saying that for several months! Elm City Market is the most blatant rip-off of a grocery store you will ever encounter. Every single time I shop here, I die a little inside. As often as I can, I go to The Dollar General instead of this place for last minute eggs and milk type purchases, but occasionally I need something that I have to come here for. The other thing is that Elm City Market may not even carry brands and items that you are looking for; they carry the bougie/organic version of everything, God forbid we are able to buy a regular bag of Cheetos or Dreyer's ice cream! You'll instead get Annie's organic cheese puffs and Arethusa Farms ice cream, and you'll have to *pay* for it (both in monetary form, and in taste form....not the Arethusa, we love that stuff, but you get the point). Shop here if you MUST, but honestly just pay the Instacart Delivery Fee on your groceries from Aldi or BigY if you're looking for convenience and you'll pay way less and have a much wider selection of items. read more

Staff is also really friendly and they sometimes host community events like "Cheddar 101," which are fun and offer great samples. The major qualm I have about this place is that it's way too expensive (especially for New Haven). Everything is high quality, but it quickly gets too pricey for large grocery runs/frequent trips. OK. The good news is this is a local "grocery store" even though it is more appealing to those who prefer to shop at places like Trader Joes and Whole Foods. The main bulk of their products are organic in nature, or gluten free, etc blah blah all that jazz. The market is small however they do have a vast selection of items. Example: Today while in the deli, another woman and then another walked up while the employee was making my sandwich. She turned around to see who was next. They also lost a sale, because she was so mad she was spoken to that way- she never even ended up ordering anything from that other deli case. 2nd example: Said lady #2 was also in front of me in the check out line. She unloaded all her things- and the rude Hispanic girl behind the counter didn't even say hello, look up, or even acknowledge she was there. The very first item she was supposed to scan was Broccoli Rabe. Granted, not everybody know what BR looks like, but if you work at a grocery store- you should clearly brush up on the items they sell. After a good 30 seconds of the young girl staring blankly at the BR like it was from another planet, the lady nicely said "that is BR". The girl didn't even pay her any mind. She proceeded to slam her fingers onto the keys, as if she was put out to even have the woman assist her. AGAIN, for the 2nd time within 10 minutes, she was pissed and stared at me like- did this really happen to me again? The woman couldn't have been more polite in her delivery. 3rd example: Now it is my turn and said Hispanic young lady who works there is now just full fledge angry about even having to come ot work today. She might have been having a bad day- but that stank look needs to leave her face. She again, just rings up my items, and the only thing during the course of my transaction that she asked me was "you wannna bagggg??" Come on. This place is a total let down, even just from a customer service standpoint. What a drag. Why go to this "deluxe" place if they can't even treat you decently for the cash you spent? This has become our new go-to supermarket, replacing Stop and Shop, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe's. It's perfectly situated on the way back home. I've always found on-street or free validated parking. Not having to go out to Milford saves time and gas, which makes up for the slightly higher prices. This place has everything we want: raw milk, good selection of cheeses, bulk foods, good bread, and lots of fresh, organic vegetables. We've become members and the regular discounts and cash-back on our co-op membership has meant we'll make our membership back in a year or so. Happy to support a community-based business, even if it means some of the staff have some rough edges. read more

There is a bakery, produce, deli, and dairy section, plus prepared foods, grab and go salads and smoothies, health and beauty section, bulk food section, frozen foods and they also sell alcoholic beverages. The store is well kept, clean, organized nicely and "usually" staffed well. Please keep in mind: To compare Elm City Market to other Grocers is unfair for the simple fact that while most other grocers have one tiny aisle for health conscious foods and goods, the majority of products sold at Elm City Market are either non GMO, no artificial sweeteners, gluten free, sugar free or tailored specifically for a wide array of dietary needs. If you also shop at other grocers you would know that their 16ft of health conscious goods is usually within the same price range. Also, you won't find another grocer locally that con compare in cleanliness. This is one of the reasons their seating area and Sunday brunch (which offers free live jazz music), is also very appealing. Do I get all of my grocery shopping done at Elm City Market? No, because there is no need for that. The cost for everyday items is higher here than at most places. If you do all of your shopping at Whole Foods, you may gladly shop here freely. However there are item here that I simply can not find in other stores. There may be less of a variety of general merchandise here, however remember that there is no limited 16ft section of health conscious goods. This is a store were you can actually walk the entire shop without limitations and find items that meet even the most inconsistent of diets. Great purchases: Healthy conscious items. They sell non gmo, sugar free, gluten free, bpa free food storage, non fragrance soaps. Their paper goods products aren't much higher than what you would find elsewhere so if your here you may as well buy some. Things to avoid: I never purchase there: meats, cheeses, dairy (can be purchased elsewhere for much cheaper than here). Pet foods, alcohol Recently I stopped here for breakfast and purchased the following: 1 Cupcake banana nut- in the pumpkin cupcake location. This was a very dense cake, similar to eating 2-3 cupcakes. I suggest sharing it! 1 Muenster monster sandwich $7.49, thick cut bacon, 2 scrambled eggs, Muenster cheese, on your choice of bread. This sandwich was ok. They make all of their sandwiches fresh so it did take quite some time for my order to come out. Think 10-14 minutes. I have been shopping here for the past 6 months since I moved across the street and have decided to never shop here again. This place has gone from expensive to ridiculous. Over the past few months elm city market has done an incremental overhaul of the the variety of groceries they used to sell (for largely marked up price) to only the most expensive brands. For example, they used to sell Guida's milk for about 4.50 a gallon, next to the more expensive $7 and $10 dollar per gallon milk. Now they ONLY sell the $7 and $10 per gallon milk. And they used to sell chicken breast that was $6 a pound along with chicken breast that was $15 a pound. Now they ONLY sell the chicken breast for $15 a pound. Their produce has always been second rate and sometimes straight up rotten looking. Often they run very low or completely out of stock on items like bananas, limes, milk, cereal. So if you find a particular brand of cereal you like, don't expect it to always be in stock the next few times you go there. And make sure you check the expiration dates since they are not very good at rotating out old stocks. One time I bout two loaves of bread only to realize later they both had already sprouted mold. I will say the only redeeming quality Elm city has is its very diverse bulk section where you can buy all sorts of nuts, lentil varieties, rice varieties, legumes, coffee, and granola. Also, it is an actual grocery store unlike Nicas or P&M which are small grocers. If you moved to New Haven as a graduate student and don't have a car.. You have very limited options for reasonable groceries. Your best bet is Nicas which is a small grocer in east rock (excellent produce, expensive but not as expensive as elm city market) or Stop and shop, which is about a 30 min walk from Orange street but that place has its own set of issues.. read more

New Haven has needed a quality grocery with a healthy selection for far too long. Thank goodness Elm City came along to keep me from having to make trips out of town for sub-par produce. Speaking of produce, I am rarely disappointed in the quality and variety of produce that Elm City has to offer, particularly for a small grocery store. I've heard people gripe about the prices, but I will happily pay for produce that I know will be fresh and tasty than risk saving some money and getting a few bad apples. I also love popping in for dinner on nights that I don't have time to cook. Whether it's sushi, soup, or a salad, I can always find a quick and healthy dinner to go at Elm City. To feed more people or heartier appetites, there's always a case of ready to go rotisserie chicken to take home and start a meal with. And the goody wall (as I call it) might just be my favorite part. There's a whole wall with tasty things like candy, dried fruits, and snack mixes. I usually can't leave without filling a green bag with something to munch on once I get home. They have a hot bar, but the vegan options are limited OR repetitively bland. I swear they've been lazy all of 2013 so far. 90% of the time, the vegan options are rice, potatoes and some sort of fried veggie combination. They don't even list ingredients or menu options anymore. (Just once in a while and I'm here at least a few times every week, whether it's for food or to tagalong with co-workers) Speaking of menu listings, they had incorrectly listed several items as vegan for the longest time. When I finally explained that honey (for one example) was not vegan, they eventually changed the signs. I don't get sandwiches here, but my friends and co-workers say they're nothing to write home about. The "sandwich artists" are very inconsistent. The prices for the hot food and sandwiches are kinda high anyway. It's almost impossible to get a full meal for less than $10 before a drink. Not great if you want a quick lunch. I was pleasantly surprised to find this grocery store in New Haven. I usually drive out to the Whole Foods and Trader Joe's in Milford for my grocery shopping. This is conveniently close and offers just a wide selection of produce, packaged goods, etc. I'm vegetarian and so most grocery stores don't have the things I'm looking for (i.e. Tofurkey slices, seitan). I was happy to see that Elm City carries all of these things and more. I will say that they definitely have a smaller selection than Whole Foods but are similar in terms of price. I'll likely still make the trek out to Milford for Trader Joe's but it's nice to know that Elm City Market is nearby if I need to grab something. read more

Elm City is great. Been going there for 4 years and have been very happy. One bone to pick. You guys need to step up your avocado game. My wife is just about ready to abandon ECM for Stop&Mop just cuz of this very dire situation. I will say, Schmop&Lop does have very delicious, perfectly ripe avocados, 4 for $5. You guys have unripe, not as delicious avocados for more money. I acknowledge that they are organic, and am happy to pay a little more. But, can't they be delicious, too?
