Still table water (there is a charge)
    Leena S.

Em Alta Na Baixa has wonderful ambiance, great service and good food. It's a nice alternative from all the tourist trap type restaurants in this area of Lisbon. There is indoor and outdoor seating. It was a popular spot, even though it was a Tuesday night. We waited about 25 minutes for our table. I ordered the Pumpkin soup and Vegetable Risotto. Both items were really good. My husband had the fish (sea bass, I believe) and it was rather underwhelming compared to my food. They charge for the still table water, which is served in their own glass bottle.

Our cruise ship was docked overnight in Lisbon. Our local tour guide recommended the Praça do Comércio for restaurants near the port, but they were all very touristy. We found this place a few blocks north of the plaza. They seated us (5 people) without a reservation on Saturday night. We sat outside. The service and food were both excellent. They have a large selection of beer, wine, and cocktails with several non-alcoholic drinks, including non-alcoholic wine. We shared a number of starters (fried squid, salmon tartar, banana ceviche). I had the black pig "feathers", which are a specific triangular cut of meat at the top of the loin. Very tasty! For desert we tried the rabanada (like french toast) and the classic Portuguese custard tart. Overall, this is a great restaurant for an authentic Portuguese dinning experience.

Putting my pride aside here to say that it was a delicious restaurant! Initially I wanted to dislike it because the owner frequently came to our table to boast about "his" everything. It came off as slightly arrogant and annoying. HOWEVER, the food was tasty, so I cannot complain. We were treated with complimentary champagne upon arrival, and port for dessert. The food was slighly upscale, but the chicken was very tasty. Everyone at the table enjoyed their food!

Stopped in without a reservation on a Friday night and they found an outdoor table for me. The interior of the restaurant is nice and has a cool ambiance to it. Round couches in the windows for seating. Staff goes over the top with quality service and is very attentive. Food is delicious and presented well. Can't say enough good things. Live music as well during dinner.

Incredible restaurant. The staff is kind and knowledgeable about our allergies (I have celiacs and he has a shellfish allergy). Hira was incredibly friendly and a joy to be served by. The owner even came and showed us the tuna caught this morning, seen on the plate

We loved the salmon and swordfish - the ambiance. We sat in a circle couch looking out the window so we felt like we were the only people in the restaurant. The lemon merengue and lemon sorbet was a perfect ending. Would come back in a heartbeat to be spoiled!

This dinner was one of the best dining experiences I have ever had. The owner greeted me and was clearly proud and confident about the food and recommendations and it did not disappoint! I had the shrimp appetizer and octopus and both were outstanding. The music paying on the street was perfect in the background and made for an extremely pleasant evening. Highly recommend.

Pastries de Bacalhau - the crust was not brown enough. May be longer time. The stuffing was flavorful but it's more the cod taste than the flavored mash potatoes which I prefer. I actually prefer the other local restaurant I tried the night before better. Caldo Verde - The potatoe part of the soup is great. Perfect viscosity but the flavor is not. It wasn't salty enough but more importantly is the flavor of the veggies and the spicy sausage they supposed to use that makes the soup taste different. Grilled giant pawns - The flavor of the prawns is not as intense as expected and hope to be. The squid ink pasta also lacked of flavor. That's disappointing. With the prawns, they should at least use the prawn shell to make sauce for the pastas. The pasta was tasteless, didn't even use enough garlic and olive oil to flavor it up. Seafood rice - Another disappointment. They used fish, small mussels and little bit of shrimp pieces along with some bigger whole shrimps and mussels. However, the rice was lack of the true seafood flavor that made from shell fish. They also added cilantro which overwhelmed the whatever left of seafood flavor. The lemonade was not a sweet lemonade but sour. Fyi. It's not fair we just went to another restaurant in the neighborhood and everything was so much better but people should know.

The codfish dumpling fusion was a pleasant surprise, creamy on the inside and a nice chewy gyoza wrapper. The octopus rice was good too. A decent amount of octopus with rice in a smoked bell pepper sauce. I was disappointed by the seafood pasta soup though. I liked the mussels, but the shrimp and the clams weren't the freshest. The clams were a little mushy. It had a nice seafood stock flavor, but definitely could have used more salt and seasoning. We had mixed service from one of the female servers.

We each ordered a glass of 20 year port to celebrate my birthday and the staff overheard and brought a complimentary rich chocolate dessert. Very enjoyable meal all the way around.

He will talk to you for hours and teach you about food and wine and culture and talk about the history of food and how it came to be in Portugal. I loved it. I learned so much. I aspire, as an American, to learn from and look up to other cultures. I feel very honored to have dined in a restaurant managed by him on our trip to Portugal. I'm going to recommend to our travel coordinator to add this restaurant to the Google map recommendations list because more people need to go to this place - they need more tables, more space, because I'm convinced this is such a hidden gem that should be exposed to the masses to enjoy! We visited several wineries and this restaurant had the best wine - bar none! The fish, a fish I hadn't tried before, was deliciously seasoned, falls apart with the fork, the creamy rice was just divine. I normally will never eat little cherry/grape tomatoes - ever - but the perfect bite of fish, creamy rice, and a tomato was... perfection. The menu is deeply curated; flavors - textures - wines that make sense. You can tell Frederico what you normally like and he 100% knows what wines he has that you will love. The tomato, orange, ham, salad, was absolutely balanced and delicious. I'm so grateful that our first trip to Portugal we got to meet Frederico and dine with these wonderful people who love food and wine as much as us. I'll never forget it as long as I live. You will not be disappointed. Promise.
