WAIT! WHAT!?!? I can't f'ing believe I haven't left a review for T.H.E. -- my favorite restaurant…read morein the White Mountains (BY FAR) -- before now! I'm serious; if we're in the Jackson area for the weekend, it's not usual for us to dine here two or three nights in a row! The first time I came to T.H.E. in Jackson Village, NH, I didn't know I was rediscovering/following Chef/Owner Jeffrey Fournier (and his wife Kate) of 51 Lincoln fame -- a former favorite of mine in Newton, MA, close to where I live. By the way, Buttonwood occupies that space in Newton now, and it's excellent, too. But I digress. We love Jackson Village, we love the White Mountains, and we love to visit the area as often as we can. I can even imagine moving here one day. But unlike the greater Boston area, there's not much to choose from in the Mount Washington Valley when it comes to fine dining. T.H.E. is the exception!!! Trust me, if you're ever in the area, you MUST GO HERE if you like great food in creative dishes based on farm-to-table principles.  It's even become a holiday tradition for us to treat ourselves to a T.H.E. gift certificate every Christmas. We know we'll be in the area several times in the coming year, and we KNOW we'll be dining at T.H.E. when we do.  My mouth is watering as I write this, and I cannot wait to go back again this fall. Did I mention I CAN'T BELIEVE I'VE NEVER WRITTEN A REVIEW for T.H.E.!!!!

We LOVED eating here! We got into town later than anticipated and hadn't figured out where to have…read moredinner. We drove by and noticed how cute Thompson House looked and couldn't resist. We were able to snag a reservation, I think one of the last ones available. We arrived a little early hoping they could seat us early, but no such luck, we had to wait until our time. The owner, who greeted us, gave us confusing instructions on where we could wait after we ordered drinks at the bar, so we tried to sit a couple of places before she told us those seats were going to soon be occupied (I don't think they ended up being so). But no matter, we got our table on time. I wasn't bothered by the limited options on the menu, I think that's a plus. Although we booked same day; I assume it's frustrating to book in advance and find out that the day's menu isn't to your liking. I'm a little surprised at some of the recent reviews which are from a few days before we ate there; aside from the confusing communication from the owner, we had a great service experience. The server offered tap water along with the paid versions (and they left two carafes of water--something no other restaurant usually does!). My one complaint was that the waiter didn't know how to answer my question about a wine pairing, but was quick about consulting the sommelier. We started with the butter lettuce salad and roasted mushrooms. The salad was perfectly dressed and the combination of the mushrooms, potato mash, toasted sage, and flowers was divine. I got the risotto, which looked more like grits to me than a risotto (didn't taste like grits, thankfully, it was delicious). My partner got the pasta, which was tasty but nothing really special. We made room for dessert, he got the chocolate bar and I got the beignets. The coulis was so good I was eating it with my spoon. I didn't really clock the 7% fee on the check; in DC a lot of restaurants are adding them now to counteract rising costs. The problem is that they don't disclose it in advance (which is now illegal in DC); they definitely need to have a sign or something. I would absolutely come back!

I'm surprised that this place is 3 stars. My husband, son and I came here on a Friday night because…read moreit was close to our hotel. My expectations were low based on the ratings. However, we ended up having a great meal. I got the tomato soup and bread, and my hubby got Joe's special (or some similar name; it was pretty much like a Philly Cheesesteak). I was obsessed with the soup. It was flavorful, without being rich. My husband was happy with his sandwich, and very impressed with the sweet potato fries. The only downfall is the price of the cocktails. We paid $14 for each drink...and the drinks weren't anything to write home about. All in all, a solid 4 star. We'll be returning later this week.

We came in on A Sunday late afternoon while skiing at Sunday River. There were a couple of open…read moretables. The hostess asked us to come back in 20 minutes because they were at capacity which we did with no issue. When we returned our hostess was quite rude and seemed overwhelmed and annoyed that we had come back. We were seated at a table and our server did not come over for at least 25 minutes. It took another 10 minutes to get our drinks, they missed our waters (which we asked for). The server did not ask us what we wanted for food. It appeared only one server was working. Eventually after trying to flag her down for fifteen more minutes she took our order. Our waitress barely paid attention to us. After we ate I left with my friend and our girlfriends stayed for drinks while we skied. They asked to go to the bar at which point the hostess told them to wait at the table for someone to come over and bring them to the bar. That never happened and they asked again at which point the hostess told them they had to leave because they were at the table past their time limit. They told her they were waiting to go to the bar and eventually were moved there. The service was even slower from there on. It overall seemed like they didn't want us there and didn't want to serve us. We spent a good amount of money and were respectful of the rules but the staff was rude and almost completely ignored us. It's disappointing because I have been coming here multiple times a year since I was a kid. Today was possibly the worst service I have ever experienced at a restaurant.
