First issue- HOURS AND DAYS of absolutely no update on what is going on. My mother has been in the hospital for 6 days. And the staff has told her nothing. She was finally told on Friday (nearly 4 days after admission) what was wrong. The only way we knew anything is by looking at and reviewing labs on our own Second issue- HIPPA HIPPA HIPPA. The amount of times information regarding other patients was shared is insane. Diagnosis, prognosis, BAC, criminal charges. You name it, we heard it. Third issue- food, or lack thereof. It was hit or miss as to whether or not food was offered or provided. AND on the rare occasion she was given an option or her order was taken, the food she got was most times not even close to what she had asked for. Fourth issue- after being told there is a possibility for discharge (by NURSES who don't even make the decisions) they got pissed off at my father and gave him attitude because he asked if they knew what time discharge usually occurs. Fifth issue- fall risk, alarm on the bed, choosing between shitting oneself after several call bells pushed and ignored, or just getting up to trigger the alarm. What a hell of a decision to make. This place is an absolute joke. And its truly unfortunate that the staffing is few and far between of those that actually care about the patients and the quality of their treatment. I would not be surprised if the hospital closes or a major lawsuit occurs.

Also prescription was called in incorrectly and when i called the emergency room they said there was nothing they could do about it since that Dr was not there!!! When upmc called me to schedule a follow up with an orthopedic dr they scheduled me with a dr who specializes in sports injuries. I am 70 years old and have 2 hip replacements. Will never go back there again!

He was discharged when he, himself, said pull the IVs out or he was going to to rip them out himself. When he went the results magically came positive. [Update from patient] left a messege with City Health Inspectors with my name & no#, and told them someone needs to look at Lancaster Regional Hospital, especially the dried body fluids and filth in the CT Scan Room. The staff at Hershey medical system were blessed with the skills to save my mom. My mother had a major stroke on Saturday. She had a complete blockage in the area controlling speech and movement on her right side. She arrived at Hershey able to understand but unable to communicate. She couldn't lift her arms. She literally was scared to death. Likewise, my dad, who witnessed everything, was panicking. When we got the call, we threw some stuff in a suitcase and drove all night covering over 800 miles to get there as soon as we could. When we arrived, we went directly to the hospital. Of course I had updates from my family, but I still wasn't sure what I would see when I walked into her room in the NICU. The moment I stepped over that threshold, I knew I still had my mom. Not mom with a new normal, but MY mom. How did I know? She was complaining about something. Yep, that's my mom, bless her heart. (And I mean that in a true southern way!) I've already established my belief in divine intervention, but it was the excellent staff at Hershey that actually performed the miracle. The moment mom crossed the ER threshold, she was hit by a whirlwind of activity. Time is critical for a stroke patient. Within the first 1/2 hour, they confirmed the stroke and had a specialist paged. Less than two hours from getting wheeled in into the ER by the EMTs, she was in recovery from surgery. The surgery was delicate (as are all brain surgeries, of course). This particular surgery takes advanced skills - her neurologist said that even they revere these surgeons. The doctor said that they got the entire clot but didn't know her prognosis. He did say that recovery was going to be slow. The wonderful care didn't stop in the ER and OR. The nurses and support staff were second to none. Not only was mom well cared for, we were also recipients of the helpfulness and kindness of the staff. We were kept abreast of every test and procedure. They made sure that the doctor came by while we were there - keeping us tightly in the loop. We had pertinent phone numbers so we could always speak with her nurse. They helped us set up her portal (clear cookies before enrolling). Mom was a nurse so she has exceptionally high standards for nursing care. Even she was impressed. There were a couple of hiccups. The food was awful. I wouldn't have eaten it either. They did not do a very good job at helping her with hygiene. She said she had a bed bath but whatever they did, sure didn't do what was intended. In 5 days, she had only received 1 bath. Please be aware that the medical center is HUGE and you will most likely have quite a trek to the room. Seriously, after the first day, I traded my cute sandals for my tennis shoes. There are a couple of places inside to eat but we didn't try them. A very busy Starbucks is in the lobby. Us fellow Penn Staters feel especially at home with the replica of our beloved Nittany Lion sculpture in the rotunda. A life size replica of our mascot sits on an outside bench just begging for a photo shoot. If I ever need urgent medical care while in town visiting, there will be absolutely no question on where I'll go. Hershey Medical Center. It's undoubtedly one of the best. They respond but heir replies tell me they didn't comprehend what I wrote. Communication is poor. Dr recommends meds to lower my diastolic numbers because of an aortic aneurysm then gives up saying my numbers are now good when they are the same as when he first decided they needed lowering and started prescribing meds. So now I'm running drugs through my body without getting results! Seems unwilling to keep with the plan and keep trying meds until we find what works and with side effects I can tolerate. Most nurses i speak with when i call are pleasant, but a few are not helpful in any way. Recent blood test was prescribed. Got a message from a nurse that I was late on getting the test. In all my blood tests over decades with a variety of Dr's I've never heard of such a thing. I get the tests when it suits me and have never been given deadlines. They make demands on me but they rarely do what they are supposed to do. I don't get the impression that they are interested in listening to me. I finally had to tell my Dr that I make all decisions concerning my health. He can recommend and educate but I make the final decisions unless I am unconscious. Then he makes the decisions following my advanced directives.

BTW, wait-time for a scheduler has improved, but only to a 13 minute wait. Still ridiculous. OK, let's do an appointment in June. "Sorry, we only schedule 2 months out so June appointments aren't available yet". Umm, is it still 1962 and you're scheduling with a ratty old appointment book with cross-outs all over the place? Avoid the stress (it'll be good for your heart) and find a cardiologist not affiliated with this train-wreck of an organization. It's a great idea but the implementation has failed on every level. p.s. Just when I was pondering that it couldn't be more difficult trying to deal with this group, I received a phone call with an offer of an appointment in May, but it's 15 miles away, 12 more miles from the office I called, so yeah, they did manage to make it even more difficult.

We were apprehensive due to the reviews, but hopeful, because the drive was shorter. Now, we wish we never set foot there. They made an already devastating experience even worse. They changed medications without telling us, which affected preexisting conditions and personality. They were not equipped with specialists needed. Their nursing is subpar. They are lazy and inattentive. Their communication with patients, families, and each other is horrendous. We had a family member there at all times, except overnight, because we could not trust them to do their jobs. We learned that the night shift staff was the laziest. We advocated and attended to our loved one when alarms went off and we had to hunt people down, or if the nurses didn't assist with toileting and loved one messed. We noticed symptoms and requested care and testing. We were so excited for our loved one to transfer to the next facility- a light at the end of the tunnel, though we felt pushed out of UPMC Memorial too quickly. When we arrived at the new facility, we learned that UPMC did NOT efficiently prepare them for us. They had no idea what our patient needed. We had to start over. The new facility immediately began correcting wrong medications and fixing UPMC Memorial's mistakes. We are praying their care will ease the mental anguish and unnecessary distress caused to our loved one, over time. If we didn't have a person with our loved one at all times, who knows how this would have turned out. UPMC Memorial dropped ALL the balls when it comes to providing care, comfort, communication, consistency, attention, and healing. There are a handful of good eggs for whom we're grateful. A tech here or there, a nurse or two, a PT, an SLP. But they alone unfortunately cannot make up for the utter recklessness and laziness we experienced in our few weeks there. Please, go elsewhere.

Unbeknownst to us, that was only walk ins. This place lets people make appointments too. For non-urgent matters. Like a rash. So is this "urgent" care or a family practice that fills in idle time with walk ins? Greedy much? We waited 90+ minutes. And they don't seem to want to give you the real picture of how long you're going to wait. They don't want you to leave. . I would say to just go to the ER if it's truly urgent. Unless you want to come and sit in a waiting room all day. One caveat- Frank is lovely and the best PA we have ever met. So if you do come, make an appointment and request Frank.
