First the good stuff. Everyone was very nice to us and our ailing pet. Now the bad. We were visiting from out of town. Our dog vomited on a Friday night, and we were concerned about possible aspiration pneumonia due to her lethargy, foamy pink nasal discharge and overall odd behavior the following morning. We were hoping we could get her started on antibiotics and be on our way. However, we were informed by the very nice vet that they could not prescribe antibiotics for our 12.5 year old bulldog without an X-ray, which would cost $900. Since when is it necessary to X-ray in order to prescribe antibiotics? This isn't a case where we're worried about over-prescribing antibiotics lest the dog develop resistance. She's an old bulldog. Also if the lungs had been clear, what then? Hundreds of dollars for blood work, which I would have considered except we had to get on our way back home. They did treat for vomiting with Serenia. The exam took place out of our view, so we were denied the opportunity to provide feedback during the exam (kind of like a pediatrician examining an infant without Mom and Dad there--what's the point?). The total was was nearly $300. When we returned home, we took her to our family vet. He offered--but did not demand--an abdominal ultrasound because upon listening he thought he could detect a possible anomaly (possible mass). We accepted the ultrasound, which was negative. He offered--but did not insist--on bloodwork to assess liver function, saying that having ruled out an abdominal mass that may have led to the vomiting, he also offered bloodwork to rule out possible liver disease and confirm infection, saying the other possibility was a brain tumor, which is common in the breed. AND...most important....he offered antibiotics WITHOUT requiring bloodwork to confirm infection. Her bloodwork was normal except a high white count--consistent with infection. But we didn't know that until the next morning, at which point she was already being treated with antibiotics (without absolute confirmation that the infection was bacterial rather than viral). We spent about the same amount of money, but we left with real answers AND antibiotics. No chest X-ray needed. I do not understand a private vet requiring costly chest X-ray on an older bulldog with a possible infection. We don't have pet insurance. Trying to up-charge pet owners who are emotionally vulnerable is ethically questionable. I expected better from this practice and was disappointed. Might as well go to VCA. read more

I was sickened by my usual and occasional visit to A vet and was looking for a replacement. Atlas DC was referred to me. Atlas Was booked and I was recommended to take my pet who was purportedly suffering from a UTI to EMMAvet. As an option, I was able to get an appointment within a day or so. The techs there are very friendly and I felt like my pet was in good hands. You cannot enter and do everything from outside. Then, the doctor calls you and ask you what the issue is and in my case a urinalysis needed to confirm what I strongly believed was a UTI. The vet analysis and prognosis was quick and it was confirmed my pet had an infection. I was told to wait for the meds. The meds were given to me from the receptionist outside the door along with a referral for payment of $400ish. So, without seeing the bill and excited to know my doggie had what I do believe great care I paid without question. The point of this review is I feel particularly exploited once receiving bill via email for review, that I would pay $103 for twenty antibiotic tabs of 250mg clavomox. I strongly feel, one should be given the opportunity to see the bill before your credit card is taken and charged. I suspect I could of had the prescription filled elsewhere for considerably less! I would say make sure you see and go over the bill as opposed to being hustled at the door- I am revising my rating because of the complete and thorough follow-up received by EMMAvet. So you get what you pay for and the practice is seemingly too notch! read more

My kitty was sick over the weekend and my regular vet is not open on weekends, so I decided to take her in just in case. But oh my, I should have gone somewhere else. 1, Pure unprofessionalism. Unclear instructions on the amount of medicine prescribed. I had to call several times to find out. They also forgot to include a necessary dropper in the medicine, so I ended up having to drive around town for almost 2 hours looking for one myself before I can feed it to my cat. On top of these, when I told them the amount of medicine I received from them would not be enough for the time prescribed, I was told that "Oh yeah, you need to come in for a second portion and pay extra $$$". I would have not known about this had I not called. 2. Dishonest practice. The doctor told me on the phone she couldn't examine my cat because she was feisty. Ok, fine. But at check out, they insisted that they had examined her and charged me $130 for it. It's sad that businesses like this exist to take advantage of pet parents during their vulnerable time. If you are looking to take your furrbabies in, I'd suggest you look somewhere else. read more

Thanks to the amazing fast acting doctor's here, we were able to save my dogs eye which had ruptured. They were able to swiftly get me in front of a specialist in MD who performed an emergency surgery on Saturday night that went until 1:30am. My dog had a skin-graft installed in his eyeball to patch the hole. Surprisingly, he is not blind though his vision in that eye is not great. read more

My cat unfortunately passed, and the staff here were incredibly kind and sympathetic. They offer cremation services, and my kitties ashes came in a nice little wooden engraved box--I wasn't expecting that and was very touched by it. I've only seen good things about their veterinary services, and based on this experience I believe them. edit: they legit sent me a handwritten condolence card with messages from their staff. I'm gonna go with "above and beyond" here. read more

*Review of Dr. Craig Randolph and support staff* We had to make the very difficult decision to put our senior cat to sleep back in October 2019. It was on the weekend and our normal vet was closed, so we took her in to EMMAvet. The high level of care and compassion we received from Dr. Craig during this super tough time was so appreciated. We were slobbering messes, but he explained every step in the process thoroughly and let us take as much time as we needed with her. He was just radiating with warmth & kindness and made us feel at ease. Shortly after our visit, we received the sweetest sympathy card in the mail from Dr. Craig and his team! It was SO thoughtful and brought me to tears. I highly recommend him and I will be a loyal follower wherever his skills take him! read more

This clinic provides extremely unrealistic timelines and does not do an even decent job of updating you when those timelines change. I showed up right when they opened at 3pm but they prioritize sick dogs, not which dog came first. They first told me 2 hours, which turned into 3 (which I only found out about because I went and stood in front of the window hoping someone would come out - which after 10 minutes they finally did) and then I didn't hear from them again until I went and stood in front of the window again at the 4.5 hour mark. They finally took him back after 5 hours and said it would be ~15 minutes before the doctor would call me to discuss my dogs case. After an hour and a half of silence, *it's after 9pm now, I called them from my car to get an update...and they didn't have one. Another 30 minutes go by and I call again and they put me on hold (for several minutes) so that I could speak with the doctor. We spoke on the phone for 25 minutes and I finally got my dog back at 10pm. I drove 40 minutes from home and was here right when they opened and I still spent 7 hours total between waiting/being seen. If they had been honest with me that it was going to take even close to that long I NEVER would have stayed - never. I would have gone somewhere else or come back another day. Regardless of the perfectly fine service they provided for my dog at the end, I will not be coming back and I would not recommend this clinic to a friend. To the business: You don't know what other things people have going on in their lives. I had to rearrange several important things throughout the afternoon and evening - every 30-60 minutes - because you as a business failed to provide me with something as simple as a realistic timeline. If you can't be transparent, you aren't doing it right. read more

We just had our first experience with EMMAVet and I'm not confident we will return. The doctor and receptionist we spoke to were very nice, but the female employee that was responsible for bringing in and returning our dog was unpleasant enough to turn us off from the entire place. We met her at the door with our dog, who was barking from a mix of pain and anxiety. We assured her he was not aggressive at all and she just stared at us before insinuating that she was weighing whether or not to turn us away because of his barking. After waiting 2 hours in the parking lot, you can imagine our frustration at hearing that from her. I would think in that in this line of work that upset dogs are not a rarity. Even worse was the handoff when she returned our dog. Actually, I can't even refer to it as a "handoff" because she didn't physically hand us his leash. Instead, while standing on the sidewalk by the road, she intentionally just dropped the leash on the ground. Thankfully our dog came right to us, but in no way is it appropriate to let a dog run off leash, especially near the road/parking lot. This sows a lot of doubt in how our pets are actually treated here. We were hoping to find an emergency vet we could trust in the area, but it seems we need to keep looking. read more

This place is heaven sent for our family esp. to our baby, Shadow. We walked in with a bleeding paw and it was addressed in a very efficient way.Our Shadow received such WONDERFUL care that we've actually made a decision to switch pet insurance (we have Banfield) so that he could go there from now on. They truly care about their precious patients and wont rip you off to make a dime. It's very obvious from the moment you walk in that they actually love what they do and they do it best! I am so grateful to Emmavet! My 4-mo. old recently rescued puppy developed terrible diarrhea that I could not stop with treatment at home. He became dehidrated and things were not looking good... 4 other vet offices/urgent cares (even the vets where I've been taking my other dog for years!!) told me they couldn't see him because they were 'over capacity', even knowing that he would die if he didn't get prompt attention. Emmavet was also overcapacity, but they took my Coco in; they showed the empathy, the humanity and professionalism that the others didn't, and for that, I'll be forever thankful. This happened on Sunday, 8/15/21. He's still on medication but doing a lot better. read more

Poor website! EmmaVet was recommended by our trusted veterinarian for urgent care for a found kitty with open wounds. Throughly reviewed the website and, as outlined, registered in advance. Website clearly says first come, first served, which is highly misleading. You will waste precious time if you read plain English. What they really mean to say is they make same day appointments based on need and in the order they are received, not first come first served at the facility. Unfortunately, all we accomplished was an hours car ride and more stress for an already stressed kitty. Good luck to you. read more

Definitely call before you head over, because they may be at capacity. They have the worst hold music I have ever heard in my life, and having to sit on hold for 15 minutes just to get an answer on whether they had openings was ridiculous. That could have been a ten second conversation the first time the person answered. If you are going to have people wait that long just to find out if you're available, please turn off the hold music. PLEASE have mercy on people who are already stressed. Three stars for the person being very sweet. read more

My regular vet, Harmony Animal Hospital, recommended this vet when I needed a weekend appointment. I had a feeling they would be great if my amazing vet recommends them. And sure enough, they were absolutely fantastic! Natalie helped to get me an appointment on a very busy day. She called me when the schedule calmed down a bit. I barely waited 5 minutes to bring him to the door and the vet saw him immediately. I got a call 10 minutes later and Dr. Katie took her time explaining the diagnosis and treatment. I took my cat here who passed away and they got a blanket for me to hold him in and gave me time to talk to him and say goodbye. They were kind and gentle. One of my cats had been in an accident and lost his eye and they were so helpful and sweet to him and helped him feel better. I just brought my two dogs here after getting attacked and it sounds like they are taking good care of of them now. They communicate before doing any procedure and let you know the costs, risks and times. I recommend them. read more

We just adopted a new puppy and were unable to get a vet appointment for over a month. Emmavet saw us the same week for an appointment and their staff was so incredibly nice, from the front desk to the vet who saw our pup. They were communicative, followed up the day after the appointment to make sure our pup was okay, and were very quick to call with her lab results and get her a prescription she needed. I made the drive from Stafford to this clinic and my cat was seen immediately. Now she is being taken care of and is getting transferred to get further treatment. Editing my original review and leaving the original review for reference. Running a business and hiring and retaining good talent is a very different skill set than being a great veterinarian. The vets may be outstanding but the business practices are not great. Technically and medically I am sure they are very good. It is difficult to write a less than stellar review as I imagine the practice is staffed with a bunch of passionate animal lovers. They desperately need a business process specialist. A few key take aways about the practice. 1. I got my detailed receipt for Saturday services on Sunday and only after sending a strong email. I never saw a written outline of costs prior to services and the person on the phone said "the doctor said you saw the bill and approved it." Sorry, this is an outright lie. I only spoke to the vet about costs. 2. The internal office communication is concerning. When I mentioned that a quoted price for a procedure differed from what I was charged the person on the phone said "yea...sometimes the vet techs give the wrong prices." Ummm...ok. And then she told me I had to call back on Monday and talk with a manager. Sorry, my time is valuable and you made the mistake. 3. Some of their drug prices are outrageous and for this reason alone I will never return. I got 4, yes 4, antibiotic tablets for $32. It is a 30 year old unpatented antibiotic and Walmart charges $1.50 for 200 for the exact same drug. They are charging drug cartel prices which borders on shameful. I just feel robbed and stupid for this rx alone. These old antibiotics are pennies for hundreds. I paid $8 per tablet. 4. I have to go back to get the physical RX's as they were not given to me. I don't mind paying urgent care Saturday premium prices at all. Like many in this area money is not a problem. But the practice just felt chaotic and exploitive. ORIGINAL REVIEW All the staff are great. No complaints at all. BUT, there are some real red flags in terms of standard business practices. I will change this review if they address these issues but for now I feel like I was deceived in a fairly significant manner. 1. I got a very vague receipt for significant services. Like "procedures $300". What procedures please? She had several. 2. They say they are open until 11pm on Saturday. They are not and decided to close at 8pm today. Hmmm...I have some follow up questions as my dog was sedated and is acting odd. 3. Vet promised I would get notes about what was done and her issues. Never got those notes. This is particularly important for follow up and any future medical care. 4. Vet tech said Vet would provide info about end of life care. Never got that and never even talked about it with the vet. 5. I got zero info about ear cleaning follow up. But this makes sense as I got zero info in writing about the nature of the ear infection. 6. Every interaction was nice BUT each person told me what they thought I wanted to hear. This caused significant disconnects. Just one example, my dog has Stage 2 kidney disease which means, on average, she will live 200-400 days. The last person to hand her to me said "oh, the vet said she is super strong and will live many more years..." Really? I don't think so. She has a recognized degenerative disease with lots of data behind it. I am calling the credit card company and dispute charges until this is resolved. Everyone was super nice. But I feel a bit deceived and it is not a nice feeling. read more

My dog has a horrible ear infection so as I was looking for someplace to take him, this place seemed like the best option with their hours, etc. There's a lot of mixed reviews on here but I decided to give them a shot today and document my experience. I called on a Sunday at 11am and was told to stay home and that I'd be contacted once it was time to head over and come in. They mentioned having three urgent pets before me. I called at 2:45 to follow up and was told they'd call me in an hour to an hour and a half. Due to no call I called at 5:20 for an update and they said they were still with a patient. During this time I had a friend recommend Vetster (24/7 vet) and scheduled an appt for 630pm. Emmavet finally called me at 6:33 to which I didn't answer because I was on the call with the other vet. I called back to cancel and was unfortunately left on hold so I hung up. I had spent the entire day just waiting around for them to call me which was unfortunately a waste of time. Had a great experience with Vetster though and got his ear infection taken care of. Staff was friendly but I won't be bringing my dogs here unless it's a life threatening emergency (with hopes and assuming they would take them quicker than they did today). read more

EmmaVet is absolutely outstanding. They came through for us in a crisis, when our dog became ill and got a series of digetive disorders and pancreatitis. They ran quite a number of diagnostic tests, as well as doing a complete physical exam. They gave us a number of medicines, and they provided indispensable advice on how to help our dog get through this crisis, what type of diet to put her on until she got well again, etc. The veterinarians, lab technicians and all the staff at EmmaVet are affable, helpful and knowlegeable. We took our baby (our cat) in today for the first time and I am extremely satisfied with the service we received. Due to covid we were not able to go inside the building which made me a little nervous but they took her in and then the vet ( Jennifer) called me and we had a phone consultation and then she explained what the issue was with our kitten. I didn't feel like I was being pressured to purchase any unnecessary products or medications like most places will do. I will keep this place in mind if we ever need urgent care again. Left a voicemail saying I'm needing to bring my dog in at some point that day when they open. My dogs spay incision was opening and just needed some glue, a stitch, and checked for infection. An hour after they opened, I still had not got a call back so I called them. I was on hold for 25 minutes when I got another call from them on the other line. So while I'm on hold, they're calling back people that left voicemails...? Then they tell me they don't have the staff to do that. What kind of urgent care vet can't help a basic wound? read more

I live in DC do it's not particularly close but not terribly far either. I know that if/when the time comes for my 16 year old kitty to be seen on an urgent basis, these guys will be at the top of my list as long as I live in the DC area. EMMAvet provided absolutely awesome life-saving care for my dog who had suddenly gone into anaphylactic shock. We rushed over and were given immediate attention. Dr. Jarvinen and her staff (Ashleigh and Gennifer) and were simply fantastic. After assessing the situation, they quickly stabilized Monroe with an IV and then quickly figured out that he was having a severe allergic reaction to either food or an insect bite. After receiving a Benadryl injection, he starting to improve pretty quickly. We are so happy to have such a expert team in our community! read more

Worse vet experience I've ever had. Very unorganized facility. Got my dogs medication mixed up and wrong twice, seems like the front has no communication with the doctors in the back because every question asked I was told I'm not sure let me go ask someone in the back. I Had my dog sedated and told to call the night before to confirm and upon arrival was told my appointment got mixed up for a different date meanwhile my dog was heavily sedated the night before and his appointment was confirmed. Plus some of the staff is rude and have no clue what they are doing. Your pets are not in good hands here coming from a mom of 4 fury friends. Worse service ever! I do not recommend please be careful. More interested in your money than your pets actual well being. read more

It's hard to write a review when you lost a pet. But Dr Wendy was so sympathetic, patient and understanding of the stress of having to say good-bye to a beloved member of the family. They use Pheromones for each pet to have the most pleasant experience possible . Children's area, with adorable veterinary activities, stethoscopes, books, games, puzzles. Books for adults too. Complimentary WiFi. Coffee, tea and water available. Love our reusable tote bag and treats. Technicians go above and beyond. Dr. Jarvinen and Dr. Randolph are both 2 of our favorite Veterinarians. I had to wait a few days to write this review in order for it to be more objective and less inflammatory. My pup was having a problem that was not an emergency (and I knew that prior to going), but I called 7 vets that were fully booked, so I ended up here. I saw the reassuring reviews and called emma and the receptionist was great so I decided to go. We were placed in the cue at 1145 for an appointment. They said they would call to prevent waiting there. I really liked the idea of that, until it took until 630pm for them to say it was our turn to come in. I took my dog and no one called and asked for any information as to why we were there. After two hours, the nurse called to say they expressed his glands and it would be 2 more hours to be seen by the vet. After waiting around 8 hours during this day, we decided to leave. The nurse was evasive on the phone and I was very disappointed to be billed a nurse visit fee with very little information provided. I mentioned this to the secretary, and she had the nurse call back with a little more information. She recommended I try not to come on the weekend next time. I completely understand that emergencies arise in this setting and they were short staffed (they volunteered this information), but efficiency would help greatly. As we were leaving, 2 more dogs were coming in even though they couldn't handle the volume they had. The next day, the secretary called to check on my dog and asked if I had any further questions, and I informed them I never saw the vet and they acted surprised. It seems that they want to provide ER care while cash cowing. I will say the receptionists were amazing & I so appreciate their professionalism and willingness to help.
