Outside - don't order here, turn the corner
    Ana B.

From the minds behind Puerto511 - Chef Jose Victorio has finally opened his Peruvian empanada concept in fells point at the former Sofi's crêpe location. I do have to write a disclaimer - I am writing the article for Baltimore magazine about this place but the food and service that I received was phenomenal. The space is much larger than I originally imagined because when I used to go to Sofi's, it was during Covid and I would only order from the window, but if you turn the corner, there's a whole main entrance with inside seating, a huge outdoor seating and they have restrooms and water stations. What shocked me the most about this empanada place is their commitment to the environment traditionally to go places waste a lot of plastic and to go containers, but this hand food revolution as the chef says is to reduce 90% of waste. Only the chimichurri sauce because of the oils comes in plastic. Everything else is in a compostable container. The Peruvian empanada dough is a little sweeter than the other empanadas and it is filled with what feels like a full meal. At first glance, the "oriental" might seem a little strange, and not PC, but in Spanish it's not a bad word for Asian cultural items. This had the Chinese Peruvian fusion fried rice and it is so delicious and there's a hint of smokiness and it feels like you're eating this fried rice inside of an empanada dough. This is still in their soft opening phase, but as of this weekend, they are going to be fully operational from 11 AM to 8 PM Tuesdays through Sundays. We love supporting local businesses, and honestly the quality of the empanadas here - they're baked and none of the meats that they use is ground - they cut them. The price point is really fair considering how much work goes into their empanadas considering also that their dough is handmade. It's not pre-bought and the quality of the ingredients are really excellent - I think other places are selling their empanadas for a little more. $5 is a steal - you do pay .50 for their sauces. Oh, do not skip on their Chica Morada it's absolutely fantastic!

Oh my goodness, I am so happy to have this empanada place open in Fells! It is absolutely delightful. The location is kinda hidden, tucked away in the alley by Barcocina but with a huge outdoor seating area! The chicha morada is my absolute fave - so refreshing! The veggie empanada was hot and fresh with the best filling. The ladies that work here are such sweethearts and work so hard to make everything from scratch! The guanábana smoothie is also so yummy! A must have if you're in Fells!

Great, fresh empanadas and super friendly service. Really clean dining space, too. The drinks are refreshing and are the perfect complement to the empanadas. Highly recommend this place!

Cute new empanada shop opened by the owners of Puerto 511! We ordered the huachana, which was perfectly seasoned and had a delightful crust, with the chimichurri sauce. They also had Peruvian drinks, and we loved the chicha morada - which has a sweet nutty flavor. Location is prime for eating your snack on the water.

Great new Peruvian empanadas shop in Fells. It's tucked away right near Kilwins. They have both an indoor ordering option or a window outside. There's minimal dining inside but plenty of outside options too. There are about 7 different options to choose from and all were delicious. The drinks are fun and localized too. I'd definitely return again! All around food and service was great and the owners are very sweet and looking to have new customers visit!

You have to be buzzed in and the dining room is literally the size of my living room. Very intimate. The food was superb. Stellar. Outstanding. Truly, each course was delicious, with layers of flavor and unexpected combinations. The ceviche in an intensely limey coconut broth started off the meal and I thought that if everything else sucked I would still be happy. But the dishes kept getting better. I did not anticipate enjoying veal heart skewers, but they were smoky and very reminiscent of good carne asada. The purple corn tamale was a very interesting mix of heavier corn with light ahi tuna. And even the little bowl of plantain chips they bring out first was excellent. This is a set menu, 5 courses on the weekdays and 6 on the weekends, and is a bring your own alcohol set up. As a result, there is almost no interaction with the waitress, and the food just arrives, but it is timed very well, with reasonable periods between courses.

I did not feel rushed until the desert course was served with the check. The variety of the dishes was fun to experience; each course was very different. Puerto 511 does really well with seafood. My favorites courses were the Ceviche Amazonico and the Tamalito Verde. The flavors were incredible. The Pulpo en su Causa was also a very interesting dish. The combination of ingredients and the inclusion of a cold mashed potato component were both innovative. I was disappointed with the other courses, though. The veal was tough, the lamp chop was tough, and the desert was not very flavorful. The quinoa flan and the passionfruit ice cream did not match very well in flavor or texture. The restaurant building itself was ok. The ambiance did not indicate fine dining to me. The service was not very personable. I would like to come back sometime in a different season, when there is a new menu. But overall, I would say Puerto 511 is definitely a dining experience worth trying.

We ordered a salad, lomo empanada, and 1/2 chicken meal with brussels sprouts & carrots and black beans. To drink we got a chica morada. The lomo empanada had a great flavor and texture which was great to split as an opener. The 1/2 chicken was flavorful with both the light and the dark meat worth trying. The chicken was halved right in from of us with a large cleaver and the freshness was notable. The brussel sprouts were plentiful, crispy if a pinch oily, and with a slight sweetness that went well with the chicken. The beans were fine; likely the only thing we would not get again. Both the mild (white) and medium (green) sauces went very well with both the empanadas and the chicken. The chicha morada tasted of corn, cloves and cinnamon and was a nice sweet treat. Overall, a wonderfully quick spot with great flavor in the inner harbor.

This new location is spacious, clean, and has great food. I got the quarter chicken platter with white meat, brussel sprouts, and yucca fries. The chicken was super flavorful, moist, and fell right off the bone. It was sooo good! The brussels had a surprising kick to them and were nice and tender. The yucca fries took an extra few minutes to come out since they were frying them up fresh for us and it was worth the wait! They have several locations but the food doesn't taste like a chain, if you know what I mean. I would definitely recommend this spot to anyone craving some delicious Peruvian style chicken.

Do not sleep on the cocktails! The Lessons In Alliteration will bring me back here, it is so well balanced and goes down a little too easy. The food was incredible. We started with the Tequeños and Patacón Salvaje (the best bite of the night for me!). Then came the Caribe Atómico (a little too salty) and Caribbean Surf & Turf Salpicón. We had to get an early reservation as they were fully booked at dinner time. The food was just okay: the appetizer with the plantain and fried calamari was okay, it lacked a little bit of dimension and was too acid forward (needed more salt to balance it). The main was the "olleta" which is a vegetarian meal; it wasn't exactly memorable. It has an incredible amount of olives and capers and not enough tofu/plaintain/mushrooms. It was also very acid forward and lacked layers/balance to the flavor. Lastly, we tried two desserts: the flan (I believe it was called quesillo) and the chocolate one. I LOVED the flan with the foam on top, and the chocolate one was towards the bitter side (which was pretty good) but I wouldn't get it again. The desserts were very overpriced for the size of it. The place is well maintained and I love the plants all around. I would like to give it another try as I like to support my fellow Latinos

Also ordered their fanesca as it is Holy Week... I will update when I warm that up and have it for lunch or dinner. One point on the fanesca they do not serve it with the little empanadas unfortunately or at least not with a to go order. Update: so I did have half of the fanesca for lunch, popped it in the microwave for 2:30 and it was piping hot and delicious! Had the 12 grains, cod, and came with the typical garnishes that I added to the top as I plated it at home. Fanesca!! Really good and with most of the typical garnishes: parsley, cheese, boiled egg, maduro (fried sweet plantain) and avocado. Just missing the small cheese flour empanadas as a garnish, but still amazing flavor! 10/10 The portion is plenty I am having the rest of it for dinner!
