It has been a long time since I ate here or a drink here, but I was at the Charles recently and got a preshow drink. I highly highly recommend their vermouth sodas. It's just a really light drink and you get an olive. It's nothing super special but it does taste really special. The cool thing about tapas teatro is that you can order a drink here and take it inside the theater. Honestly, this place is one of the most solid institutions in the city so I'm very glad that they were doing well. The food here was a mix. My favorite bite was probably the octopus and romanesco sauce. A few things were a mess like the random loaf of bread they gave us to start that was dry. The ambience probably hasn't changed much since since they opened, which was probably around the early 2000s it's giving very much a sex in the city vibes of the years past but honestly there's nothing wrong with it and it's a solid place. I know Tapas Teatro isn't new news but I think there's something to be said for a restaurant that's been around decades, has had almost the exact same menu the whole time, and still brings in a solid crowd most nights. We went back after a movie night recently and tried the chicken with the cumin aioli. It was incredible! Grilled to perfection with the perfect char while still being juicy. Then a few nights ago, we perfected our order by selecting the brussel sprouts (probably some of my favorite brussels EVER), the papas bravas, the shrimp, and the chicken. These four dishes have become our go-to and while I'm eager to try more from the extensive menu, I don't think I'll get tired of these. We also tried the paella which is the most expensive dish on the menu at $29 but it is also probably the largest serving size on the menu. It was pretty good but could've used more cracked pepper and/or saffron. I'd probably skip it next time. I'm still in love with their sangria and this time we got a pitcher and also tried the white sangria. I don't normally like white sangria but this one I enjoyed -- although the red still takes the cake for me. Service was friendly and fast, as always. The check was super reasonable for the amount of food, in my opinion. We will definitely be back! This spot is probably in my top 10 favorite places in Baltimore. We really liked our dinner here. Located adjacent to the Charles Theater, it's in a great location. We were greeted immediately and led to a seat. The waitress gave great service with a smile. They serve great drinks as well as an array of small plates Spanish style. Our favorite dishes was the pollo a la braza, the bistec, the branzino (although it's a tiny amount), and the brussels. Note the brussels are roasted and in a light cream with bacon, as opposed to be deep fried and crispy. They have great desserts, dessert drinks, and even drip coffee. What we didn't love is that the two seater tables are placed extremely close together, and it makes having conversations difficult, especially because you may be competing with loud mouths. We hadn't been for a while but were excited to revisit before our movie. The menu has a lot of crowd pleasers that looked good on paper. Most of our dishes, though, were very subpar. Bistec à la Brasa was overcooked and tough. Tuna tartare was flavorless. Brussels were overdressed with sauce. All dishes were underseasoned. On the plus side, the cocktails were good. The worst part was the service. We never got 2 of the 6 dishes we ordered. When we got the bill, those 2 dishes were not on it, which we acknowledged but pointed out to the waiter that we had ordered them and didn't get them. He asked if we had ordered from him and we confirmed that we had. He then got defensive and said that it was a busier night than expected and that he must have put them on hold and the order never got filled (whatever that means). We asked if that meant they were still coming and he again got defensive and said no, something about their being on hold, as if that was not his fault, and said, well you didn't get charged for them. It was disconcerting how little ownership he took for not getting us the food we ordered. At that point we didn't really want the missing dishes because the ones we got were so mediocre. Between the food and service, it was a pretty bad experience that turned us off to a place we had previously thought to be a reasonable pre/post-movie stop. read more

Headed here for a quick dinner after a movie night (conveniently literally attached to the Charles Street Theater). They had ample space on a Saturday night as we were walk ins. We weren't too hungry, so we ended up splitting a couple tapas and a dessert. We got the chicken and cheese croquettes, the Boquerones, and the calamari. Chicken and cheese croquettes definitely had a bit of a kick to it spice wise, but it was managable. The boquerones, which are anchovies marinated in some oil and seasonings, were yummy, but it only came with two little pieces of bread, thus one bread apiece for 2 people. Calamari was probably my favorite of the savories we ate, as the dipping sauce was not marinara exactly, or if it was, it tasted yummy. This honestly would have been a 3 stars, but the chocolate torte cake we shared elevated it to 4 stars. It really hit the spot. Our server was also very nice and friendly and made sure to check on us and make sure our drinks were handled. Second time here in the last several years. Met a friend who loves in the Baltimore suburbs here on a rainy Saturday night at 8pm. Found the very last spot in the garage across the street (that's open til 12am), which I was grateful for since street parking was simply nonexistent. Tapas Teatro does not take reservations, so we had hoped coming later in the evening might give us a chance to be seated right away, but no such luck. They're a smaller restaurant and all the tables were full, but the hostess directed us to the bar to wait. The bartender asked a patron to move down one so two adjacent seats were made available to us, which was very nice. The bartender was helpful in suggesting two gin-based cocktails for us. I had the Mediterrania - made with Mahon Mediterranean gin, orange, basil, and Angostura bitters. My friend has the BCN Tonic #1, which she really enjoyed as a Gin & Tonic officianado, made with BCN Barcelona gin and juniper berries. We ordered seconds during dinner, unwilling to switch since we enjoyed them so much. Within just a few minutes, our table was ready and we were able to transfer our tab to the table easily. We were brought some bread and olive oil for the table while we looked over the menu. We ordered the Gambas al Ajillo, shrimp sautéed in garlic and olive oil. We used our table bread to dip in the remaining oil after devouring the shrimp, and we enjoyed it so much we ordered a second to share. We ordered the Mejillones, sautéed mussels in a white wine garlic sauce (rather than a red sauce, also an option). It took up a lot of real estate on the small 2-top table, but it was very good. My only complaint was there was very little broth in the bowl. I like when the mussels are swimming in it a bit more, giving me something to dip my bread in as well. We ordered the Scallops, which were wrapped in a slice of Serrano ham in a saffron sauce. Also delicious. My friend has the Costillas de Cordero, the lamb chops. I don't care for lamb myself, but she remembered they were delicious from our last visit so she was inclined to order those again. Our last round of tapas included the Brussels Sprouts which were made with bacon, Manchego cheese, cream and truffle oil. Fantastic, highly recommend. And we had the potato and cheese Croquetas, also an excellent choice. Since we were celebrating a birthday, we ordered two coffees, a Torte Chocolate for my friend, and the Teatro Tarta de Quedo - a house made Goat Cheesecake with sherry reduction drizzle. Both were excellent, as were the coffees which helped keep me alert for the 90-minute ride back to Virginia at the end of the night. What a unique dining experience my friends and I had at Tapas Teatro! Literally everything I tasted was a hit! But it wasn't just the food, the drinks were equally amazing. Most important, all of the dishes were very affordable allowing you to try several without breaking the bank. We arrived at the restaurant around 530pm on a Saturday. The venue was completely filled, so word to the wise, get their early or be prepared to wait. The restaurant is small and pretty dark. The seating is different, not what I expected, but comfortable. They definitely made the best use out of a tiny space. I started with the Rojito, a tasty rum based drink. For my meal, I had the Idiazábal which consisted of sheep's milk cheese with dry cured chorizo, whole grain mustard, caper berries and crostini. I also had the Salmón con Melaza which was a grilled salmon on top of ginger-jalapeño rice cake and Mejillones, mussels in a tomato basil sauce. Every dish was so tasty, but I think I enjoyed the salmon the most, the ginger jalapeño race cake was truly unmatched. I cannot wait to bring my husband here for date night. We shared the empedrat de bonito del norte (white beans, fresh green beans, piquillo pepper, red onion, and capers, topped with Spanish conserved tuna); chili rellenos (piquillo peppers stuffed with aged Idiazabal cheese); berenjana asada (roasted eggplant, curried vegetables, minted yogurt); pulpo gallego (olive oil poached octopus, potato, olives, and heirloom cherry tomato); and marmitako (Basque stew of tuna, potato, roasted sofrito, and tomato). My favorites were the eggplant, piquillo peppers, and bean salad. The marmitako's tuna was really dry, which kept me from being able to enjoy that dish, although the stew itself had good flavor. And the octopus was almost tender - but not quite. Their wine list is pretty great - lots of interesting options. Overall, it was a pretty good meal, but I liked its chill vibes and service more than the food. Servers and hosts were so nice, we were greeted and seated immediately. We were running late for our movie, but our server was a superstar and was very efficient in taking our order and bringing food to us quickly so that we made it to our movie on time. The food here is very good although it is a bit pricey for the amount you get. The portions are a bit small which is understandable because it's a tapas place. Expect to order about 2-3 tapas per person. We ordered the ratatouille which was very flavorful and good start to our meal. We also got the chicken skewers, which were solid. We also ordered the scallops-- excellent but only 3 scallops' total. Date night at the Charles Theater with dinner at Tapas Teatro next door. We started with the Saffron Sidecar cocktail, made with Spanish brandy and Saffron Liqueur. The last time I had Saffron I broke my tailbone. We'll call it an alcohol induced self-inflicted injury and save that story for another time! We ordered a few tapas to share, and although stuffed just like the chili rellenos, we couldn't resist dessert. The Papas Bravas? Que rico! Perfectly fried with spicy aioli. The Chili Rellenos? They arrived not fried or baked (sorpresa!) and were simply Piquillo peppers stuffed with a delicious aged Idiazabal cheese. The Espinaca y Cangrego (spinach and crab) tapa was very good, very creamy and very indulgent with sauteed spinach, jumbo lump crabmeat, Manchego cheese, and a sherry cream sauce. The Croquetas de Pollo (chicken fritters) was an interesting puree of spicy chicken and cheese fried into a fritter ball. If all of this wasn't enough, we finished out dinner with the Teatro Tarta de Queso. House made goat cheesecake with almond-graham cracker crust and Pedro Ximenez sherry reduction. Puchica! They earned earned themselves a new regular! I went to the Charles theater for a showing and decided on dinner here since the prices were pretty reasonable and the cocktail menu didn't look too shabby. Unfortunately they didn't have the cocktail I wanted but instead I found a decent amaro and sherry selection on the back bar and and a vermouth cocktail selection. Everything I had was cooked perfectly and had a good texture, my only point of contention would be adding a bit more salt to everything but under-salting is common in restaurants state side and better than over salting. The little steak cutlet was cooked perfectly medium rare which I was surprised because I've seen cutlets much larger over cooked when requesting medium rare. It was also perfectly tender and juicy despite being a lean cut, well worth the 15 dollars. My second favorite was the Bronzino which was a steal for 15. The filet was crisp and tender. The salsa verde unfortunately I found on the bland side (it has to be mostly parsley) and found it benefitted from a squeeze of lemon. I also enjoyed the salmon and the little rice cake it came with. The weakest contender was the grilled octopus but it was still good - just not outstanding and I've had better romesco. Last but not least Charlie the bartender is delightful and told me a little bit about the history of this restaurant that's been in the area for 20 years. It definitely has a cozy neighborhood vibe which differs from the large glamorous, yet corporate tapas bars in dc that are super loud and trendy. I can actually relax and unwind here! A tapas place in a very active area. This opened at 5 and was full by 6 on a Thursday. They don't take reservations. I'd get there early. The building is quite historic, and the restaurant has exposed brick walls and a two-story high glass window looking out onto the street. The tapas menu is-from a special diet perspective-decent, but not great. Many cheese-based options are available for a vegetarian; trying to avoid dairy would be a bit difficult and the menu isn't labeled for vegetarian or GF concerns. The plates I shared were a pretty representative sample of the menu: a salad, cheese spread over bread, sauteed spinach, and good old papas bravas. Indeed, this was one of the better renditions of papas bravas I've had; these were thin sliced lightly fried potatoes with skins on a a reasonably spicy sauce. I liked the spinach with apples and pine nuts on principle, but it was a bit sweet and needed other dishes to balance it out. A dessert menu was presented to us without them asking if we wanted it, but we did, enough to order a mousse in a chocolate shell, which was as rich as one might hope. It wasn't a great service experience for how high the check was; not that we were treated poorly, but we waited something like ten minutes to order dessert and another ten for the check. Despite being crowded, they didn't seem in any hurry to get us out. I never got a second serving of the bread and oil they offered, and was running out of water as well. I think maybe they just needed more staff. Given the prominent location near a theater (a separate entrance from the theater gets you straight into the restaurant) and a music venue, I can see the value of this place, and it's a good night out on the town. read more

This is definitely one of the favorite tapas places in Baltimore. We were at Pen & Quill for an event. After a round of drinks and some appetizers we decided to try out tapas. We were extremely lucky to find a perfect spot on their outdoor patio on a nice day. Since we already had our drinks at Pen & Quill we jumped straight into their food. We ordered grilled octopus with potatoes, grilled squid, fried squid, mussels, chorizo with potatoes and cheese platter. Everything was very good. But if I had to pick one I would pick fried squid. The dip was very good. It looked like roasted peppers. Service was great! Although she dropped a little bit of grilled squid juice on me, I didn't mind as the food was delicious. Pricing is decent as well. Tapas restaurant can be quite expensive as we tend to order many small plates of delicious food. Based on a one-time visit. Place has a nice ambiance with enough indoor and outdoor seating, socially distanced to feel comfortable with your own seated party in COVID season. The servers were friendly and attentive, providing us bread and oil and replenishing the supply when we ate it up. I am borderline embarrassed, because the food here is so freaking good and I should have been experienced all this yumminess! When you first walk in, to the immediate right you can see an open space for seating but behind the thin wall is the bar. I sat at the bar because I just wanted a quick bite. Sherman asked to help me as soon as I sat down providing me with napkins and a water. I ordered as recommended Costillas de Cordero (Grilled Lamb Chops w House - Made Barbeque Sauce) and threw in Papas Bravas (Fried Potatoes w Spicy Aioli). I honestly cannot begin to tell you which menu item I enjoyed more. The lamb chops were made perfectly, season perfectly and cooked perfectly! The potatoes, oh my goodness! The flavoring of these potatoes was so good, I could barely come up for air while eating! Sherman was so attentive checking on me at the perfect time not being overbearing but not forgetting I was there either. I indulged in both of these food items for under $20 & that's a fantastic price! The service was priceless! I definitely looking forward to returning. Parking - this location is located attached to a small strip of restaurants and shops. Parking is street parking only and metered. But don't worry, patience is a virtue and it shouldn't be hard to locate a space within walking distance. read more

My wife and I had lived in Baltimore, specifically the Old Goucher neighborhood for about two and a half years, but after a commitment to try Baltimore's best food, Tapas Teatro made the cut and we were looking forward to a feast. We had arrived on a busy Friday evening and had a reservation, however they put us in a table that was not only by the door blowing cold air with each opening, but it was at the end and was sitting by the doorway to the Charles Theater, with the chair nearly in front of the stairs, so I utilized the chair that was sitting on the wall and it made for a better experience. Also, i would've taken pictures, but it was so dark in the restaurant that a photo from my flash would have bothered anybody that was across the restaurant. I kind of noticed when the person across from my wife and I pulled out her phone and turned on the flashlight. Now my wife and I , we are a little inexperienced in the tapas world and we had made the decision to put in our order in one swoop, only problem was, the table was so small the waiter was trying to find room to put everything else. We should have taken our cues from the couple who was sitting next to us, who were ordering two plates at a time. My guess, is that we should have gotten a bigger table. But oh well, lesson learned. The highlights of the meal included the albondigas, the croquetas, and my favorite of the meal, the brussels sprouts (covered in cheese), which can be a saving grace for parents looking for their kiddos to eat their veggies, because it was so phenomenal, that I wanted another plate. We had a slew of servers tag teaming, making sure that we were well taken care of, from the order to the serving of the food, they even tagged on the check as our regular server got busy. This really is a great option and with the convenience of the Charles Theater, it makes it one of Baltimore's best date night options. read more

I ordered for delivery 3 weeks ago: 2 tortilla espanola, 1 pulpo gallego, 1 calamares fritos, 2 seafood paella. High hopes and some worries for the paella given previous bad experiences elsewhere and its cost. The positives: the calamares were good, the seafood in the paella very decent, the quantity of a single paella definitely sufficient for two people (but this was not clear from reading the menu, so I got two of it). The tortilla was average and small. The negatives: What to say about the pulpo gallego (octopus)? I'd have no idea. There simply was no octopus to eat. As you can see from the picture, a few olives, two cherry tomatoes, a bunch of potatoes and 2 (yes, two) small pieces of octopus for a total of 15$. This dish is not worth that and would I have been at the restaurant I would have sent it back. I ordered octopus, not veggies. The worries about the paella were also correct. While the seafood was ok, as said above, the rice was incredibly overcooked and all sticking together in a huge mess. I tried to contact the restaurant twice about the lack of octopus, but I received no response. While I think that mishaps can happen and there might have been some attenuating circumstances because it was a delivery, an answer and a refund for a dish basically missing the main ingredient should be the standard. All in all, a very sub-par experience for the amount spent. read more

I really like this little place. I've gone twice now, and it's been Enjoyable both times. I just so happened to have been there on a Tuesday where the pitchers of Sangria are only $10! As someone who love sangria, I want to go on record saying it's one of my fav sangria specials! The bartender was very approachable and knowledgeable. We were able to interact very easily and get all questions answered. We tried a number of tapas. My favorite was the (basic) Garlic Shrimp. Basic, yet DELICIOUS! The bbq lamp was pretty tasty as well. The spicy chicken calls were not my favorite though it paired well with the dipping sauce. The the space is a good size, it gives an intimate feel.
