I stopped by here because I cannot resist any kind of stuffed bread. I got three flavors: beef, chicken, ratatouille. Ratatouille was just okay. Chicken was good but could have used more flavor. I am happy for this place as they were featured on the new Yelp Top 100 Places To Eat. Out of the 100 places Yelp has chosen, it probably means the most to this shop. I'm an upper East Village resident and being feautured means a lot to the community and these hard working owners who have stuck it through. I read the "About" from Empanada Kitchen. Well, we have an idea where the empanadas come from. Most of the Spanish that moved or migrated to Argentina are from Galicia, they're Gallegos. The Gallegos make empanadas that are baked in half baking sheets. Some of their most popular ones are the seafood ones bc they're next to the Atlantic Ocean. The type of empanadas that the Argentinians make are called 'Empanadillas' in Spain. In any case, they're delicious and worth every penny, so go treat yourself and enjoy. I gave them 4 starts instead of 5 bc they're addictive. I also thought that they had too much cumin for my taste. read more

I love food, and I have tried a few empanadas in my life, but this place beat all my expectations. The doughy flakey crust is absolutely delicious and melts in your mouth. From their unique craft creations like mushrooms and goat cheese, to the classics like beef and chicken, empanada kitchen never disappoints. Additionally, they have meal deal options- I always get the two empanadas and salad of the day. The empanadas are warm and filling, they make you feel like you're being wrapped in a warm blanket of love while experiencing the best orgasm of your life. And the salad is always fresh and delicious no matter what is in it. The dressing is homemade. I'm serious when I say that this is the best addition to the little neighborhood surrounding my office. But, my gratitude and love for this place does not end there. The service I have received at Empanada Kitchen is ALWAYS kind and friendly. Best empanadas I have ever had! This place is amazing!! They have so many unique flavors to choose from and they are always offering a special flavor of the month to keep it interesting. The shop is super cute, and it's never too crowded. The chimchurri sauce is sooo addicting! Also a little secret of mine...if I'm hosting a last minute dinner, or don't feel like cooking for a potluck, I will grab a box of empanadas to go, and just re-heat in the oven right before I'm ready to serve it. Pair it with some Spanish rice & soup, and you have an easy meal ready to wow your guests. ;) You also can't beat the price! For only $3.50 per empanada, that's a steal! 2-3 of them will easily will you up. My favorites are the Mushroom/goat cheese, Beef, and chicken! These are easily the best empanadas I've ever had in my entire life. You will never find anything better, and I challenge you to come back with even empanadas made in Argentina and show me any that are better than this. First, let's start with the empanada pastry itself. Because it's baked and not fried, the exterior is crispy brown on the outside but soft and tender on the inside. Its perfectly brushed with egg whites inside to hold in the juices of whatever flavors you're getting. Next, let's talk about the fillings: my personal favorites are the braised lamb (its braised in Malbec red wine, onions, carrots and rosemary for 24 hours!!!), the sweet corn & basil, the vegetable ratatouille, the mushroom & goat cheese, and the classic beef. And if you get there in the morning or happen to catch them at one of the local farmer's markets, don't miss the bacon, egg and cheese empanada. Everything is ridiculously delicious. - The braised lamb...I mean talk about decadent and savory!!! This is going to taste like an expensive French dinner wrapped into a handheld pastry. - The sweet corn & basil is one flavor combo I didn't expect to be as awesome as it is, but turned out to be my favorite. I could (and have) easily eaten 6 of these in a row. - The ratatouille explodes with fresh vegetable flavor with the tomato, zucchini, eggplant, onion, red pepper, garlic, oregano, and is incredibly juicy and satisfying. - The mushroom and goat cheese is another savory masterpiece. Soft mushrooms blend together with the smooth creamy goat cheese. You'll want to have a glass of red wine with this. - The beef is just pure juicy, meaty goodness with the perfect amount of spice. You're going to bite into this, and then struggle to not eat your fingers after the juice runs down them. Additionally: - The ham and cheese is pure comfort food; soft, chewy cheese and salty ham make the perfect combo. - The chicken is tender with just the right amount of spices. - The caprese erupts with bright tomato juices and smooth melted cheese. I've also tried seasonal empanadas like the broccoli and cheese, and spicy sausage, which should be on the main menu year-round. I love how they are constantly experimenting with different flavors, and trying to work on the next hit. Matias has a gift for pairing flavors that activate all taste receptors together in a delicious vehicle to shove into your face. They are perfect sized to have 2-3 for breakfast, lunch or dinner on the go, or to have catered for a team event or meeting. I'm so excited that they've gotten Postmates and Grubhub to deliver, and hope to see them expand to locations closer to my office as well so I can go there, pick them up or have them delivered faster. =) AND HOLY CRAP I HAVEN'T EVEN MENTIONED THE CHIMICHURRI SAUCE YET!!! It's so perfect to dip any empanada into, or drizzle over the top of one of your most recent bites, rich with garlic, parsley, oregano, olive oil and other spices. Matias' chimichurri sauce is so good, you'll want to (and I have) do shots of it when you're done. He has both a standard and a spicy version of the chimichurri. I can't say enough good things about Empanada Kitchen, and cannot recommend them highly enough. The environment is clean, staff is friendly, food tastes decent, buuuuut the value is INCREDIBLY poor. The pictures are deceiving. I went in wanting a snack, thinking 1 would be enough -- I ended up order 2 to be safe. The two together were BARELY a snack. Their "deals" aren't all that great either....like.. 3 empenadas @ 9.99 + $3.00 coke for 50 cents off...and it's one of those places that, of course, ask you for tip BEFORE you get the food, so let's just say you get 3 empenadas, a coke, and tip 10-15%....you're looking at a $15 snack. Not, wurf (worth). Update: increased from 2 stars to 3 stars -- to be fair, not everyone eats as much as me, so for some people that $15 for a meal can be justified, because the the taste of the empenadas was pretty decent. read more
