Cocina 35 is one of my favorite places to eat in San Diego because it has delicious Mexican food and a fun atmosphere. The restaurant looks aesthetic and nicely decorated which makes it a great place to take pictures and enjoy your food. I ordered chilaquiles, and they were really good and flavorful. The people who work there were also very nice and friendly. The prices are okay and reasonable for the food you get. One thing I don't like is that they close really early, so it can be hard to go later in the day. Overall, I would give Cocina 35 4 out of 5 stars. read more

My husband and I live 1 block away and used to order pickup and take it home to eat so we don't have to wait in the insane line all the time. Now it seems that the business has shut down their online ordering on weekends and they also don't have a way to take phone orders. The only way we can order from here is by ordering on uber eats or grubhub, which makes no sense because we only live 1 block away. I keep trying to call in an order for pickup and they either don't pick up the phone, or they pick up and tell you it is too loud inside for them to hear your order so they can't take it. I have tried to find a way to email or contact management in general to find out if they realize they are losing business from Cortez Hill residents in the neighborhood in this way. But their website lists no email, no contact form, no phone number except the one I call and get no answer. There isn't even a way to message them privately on yelp, so I guess now I'm leaving this review. To management: please allow for online ordering for pickup on weekends again or get a phone in the back where someone can hear well enough to take phone orders. The burrito machaca plate was savory and a little spicy- such a great flavor when paired with my preferred green salsa and the side of flavorful beans/sauce. This is a really cute brunch spot and they do make amazing chilaquiles with generous portions. To start of, I ordered their coffee specifically the De La Olla House special and it was delicious. As someone who does not normally order coffee with any kind of sweeteners, this was quite acceptable. For my main dish, I ordered El Patron which has chilaquiles, beans, eggs (I chose over easy), and cajeta toast (tasted like french toast in my opinion) and added adobada for extra protein. Covina 35 at Liberty Station - Disappointing and Overpriced Covina 35 looks great from the outside, but the experience doesn't match the price tag. The food is overpriced Mexican fare that simply isn't worth what they're charging. Portions and flavor don't justify the cost, especially given how many better options are nearby. The biggest issue, though, is the front-of-house management. The hostess insists on making people wait in line even if you're just trying to sit at the bar, which makes no sense and creates unnecessary frustration. I watched multiple guests walk away because of it. The manager eventually had to step in and correct her, but by then the damage was done. Overall, Covina 35 feels like a place that's more focused on controlling the line than delivering value or hospitality. She often ate at the location in Otay while working at the border, and I was informed they provided all the food for her wedding shower. Within 15-20 minutes the place was packed. First of all do t miss the Café De La Olla House, and sweeten it up with that decadent Piloncllo in the jar. I could maybe live on this beveridge! I ordered the del Mercado topped with carnitas and I opted for an over medium egg on top which was perfect. The chilaquiles were the perfect balance of soggy/crunchy. Cocina 35 is a popular Mexican brunch spot in San Diego, with 3 locations in the area. I secured a reservation online for Sunday, and I'd recommend that given it does get busy. Cramped and loud, but nicely decorated and serving solid authentic meals. Mexican Latte-9/10: Pretty straightforward. A solid, nostalgic spiced coffee. Mazapan Latte-10/10: A novelty menu item, both nostalgic and tasty. With a sweetened condensed milk rim and mazapan dust, this sweet coffee is a must order. Chilaquiles-10/10: Cocina 35 knows how to throw down the best Mexican breakfast item: the chilaquiles. The Verde was good but didn't pack much heat. The Salsa Secreta was our favorite; a creamy 3-chile salsa with an artichoke flavor, this one packs an enjoyable amount of heat. The Chipotle was another yummy and creamy option, making your nose run but still very enjoyable. Frijoles Puercos-7/10: They were pretty standard. I've definitely had better. They served their purpose as a good side. Concha Rellena-7.5/10: Another creative menu item. Whipped cream and whole strawberries sandwiched between two french toast-style concha halves and drenched in cajeta. It was sweet and warm, but would've been more enjoyable with fresher and/or sliced strawberries. Fun to order, but a regular concha is better suited for enjoying with your coffee. Service-6/10: Again, Cocina 35 gets packed, so service isn't as attentive. Our party had to order and wait for water, ask for refills, call the server over for more orders and again for the bill, and wouldn't speak to us in Spanish. I witnessed other tables be spoken to in Spanish, but upon ordering I'd only be responded to in English. I know I'm a white Mexican, but native tongue is nice when I make it clear I'd like to order in Spanish. Overall, a fun spot with solid menu items. The samplers are pricey but probably the best bang for your buck. They do the classics very well, and are very much worth your visit! read more

Had a reservation for Cocina 35 as our post half marathon meal. Needless to say, we were excited and running on an empty belly. Arrived at our reservation time and ended up needing to wait an additional 20 mins before being seated. I recognize they're busy but what's the point of a reservation? At least they were nice about it. Also was given the heads up that dining is limited to 60 mins. Def feel that's a bit annoying cause rather than feeling like I'm in for a relaxing dining experience, I'm needing to rush through my meal against a 60 min clock. Had an agua fresca, Mexican coke, and BYO chilaquiles. The food was good - especially the creamy habanero sauce. It was atypical and unique. We ended up in the outdoor seating area. It is spacious and comfortable, but it can get a bit chilly outside. For food, the chilaquiles al pastor was great. It comes with a delicious crema, and the spice really creeps up on you! We also ordered the ranchero chilaquiles. It tasted good, but felt like it was a bit light on the chorizo. You can ask for their hot sauce for some extra kick. We also ordered the fresca flight. It was a fun concept to try all their fresca but they're really tiny. The mango flavor was our favorite. The other flavors were more watery. We finished with the churros con cajeta, which were exceptionally tasty. The service was excellent. The staff was attentive and checked in on us often. You do need a reservation, but it's very easy to make online, and there were plenty of time options available. The decor is absolutely beautiful! We felt a little underdressed at first, but we were told there's no strict dress code, which made us feel much more comfortable. I have three kids, and each of them was given a colorful bag with a tic-tac-toe game and a paper they could color. They loved it and stayed entertained the whole time! It was such a nice touch and different from the typical kids' coloring sheets you see at most restaurants. I will say they don't offer the usual chicken tenders and fries on the kids' menu, but that didn't stop us--we were happy to try something new for them. Our experience with the waiter and every staff member we interacted with was nothing short of amazing. It's clear the owner paid attention to every single detail when creating this place. Even the bathrooms are beautiful--and they even provide mouthwash! It really felt like an experience from start to finish. Underwhelmed! I was really looking forward to trying this restaurant after my girlfriends hosted a small gathering here that I unfortunately wasn't able to attend. The restaurant was not particularly busy, with only about three tables occupied, yet the service felt as though the staff was overwhelmed. Our food was good, but several of our orders were incorrect. Rather than send everything back, we simply ate what we were served. What puzzled me most was how so many details were missed when the restaurant was relatively quiet. Then came the water. We asked for water for the table and were brought lovely silver bottles. What we were not told was that those bottles came at a lovely little price of $4 each! A heads up would have been appreciated before they landed on the table. Good food, but the overall experience fell short. With more attentive service, better accuracy, and clearer communication, this could have been a much better visit. read more

The food here is always delicious. It's always fresh and full of flavor. I recommend getting the Tochomorocho instead of a full order of Chilaquiles. The Tochomorocho has a smaller portion of chilaquiles with your choice of sauce, huevos rancheros, sweet corn tamale, and a side of beans. It's $24.00, which is about the same you'd pay for Chilaquiles with a protein or eggs. My big complaint is that the prices have gone up quite a lot in the last year. $20 for chilaquiles is just a bit much. This was our first stop after arriving in San Diego. We were starving and wanted something close to our hotel. We had no idea that the restaurant is literally next door. Anyway, this place is super popular. There was a line when we arrived at about 11:30 California time (1:30 our time). We gave our name and waited about 15 minutes. We used that time to study the menu and by the time we were called, we could hardly wait! Everything looked so good. I had the burritos with pibil pork with mild red sauce. They were superb. The wife had the combo platter which was huge. I don't remember everything but there were 5 or 6 separate items and she ate them all! The sweet corn tamale stood out my mind. The chilaquiles with red sauce was really good and had a slight kick. The kid had an eggs and French toast plate and ate it all! They do have other chile options if you want something spicier. The beans were a little too thin for me. Dennise seated us and was so kind, she even shared a few of her favorite menu items since it was our first visit. Our server Anelle was great as well. While we were in San Diego we saw this sign outside of our hotel that said something to the effect of "Best Chilaquiles in San Diego." So, naturally we HAD to find out if that sign was accurate!! We did not think to make a reservation and this morning, there was a LINE!! We got on the waitlist and stood there in line. We finally got seated outside and a staff member brought over coffee and a danish to offer us at our table. We declined, but what a nice and kind gesture. My coffee was so creamy and delicious served with a few cookies!!! Not overly sweet either, just perfection!! Loved our visit to Cocina35.. even by the wait time, we knew we were in for a treat. As a bit of a pro-tip, make a reservation via OpenTable so you don't have to wait in the standby line. Even with our reservation, we waited 15 mins for our table and to be seated. The decor is modern and gives upscale resort.. the restaurant located in downtown and was a short walk from our hotel. There is plenty of public parking nearby. Caught the ferry over to Coronado Island for a chill day.. First stop Cocina 35; I was Buenos Diased with a big smile and seated immediately, a table with a view to top it off, was fab! Me: The Los Rancheros with my eggs scrambled and a mimosa flight. Both were fresh and delicious. I almost cleaned my plate and I probably should have since I definitely drink all the mimosas. People were having fun and a lot of Feliz Cumpleaños were around me, I was tempted to go congratulate them on being Virgos, but I opted out.
